- Literature Circle Roles and Schedule for the Novel Unit—Be able to understand what each role involves and how it will be implemented in the class

- Ask any questions about how it works and the routine- Lit Circle Days- Mondays and Fridays

Discussion Director/ Questioner• Your job:

– Write down questions as you are reading that you think your group would want to talk about and discuss

– You will use the Active Strategies sheet to help you formulate a question from the 7 types:• Predict• Visualize• Connect• Evaluate• Question• Clarify• Evaluate

– Write NO LESS THAN 3 questions per chapter

Literary Luminary

• Your job:– Find good “read aloud” parts of the story—parts of

the story that will help your teammates remember such as interesting, powerful, puzzling, or important

– Justify your choices– Write the page numbers and paragraph numbers to

make it easy to find along with your rationale– You must find NO LESS THAN 5 read-alouds per

week

Vocabulary Expert• Your Job:

– Scour and comb the text for important vocabulary words within the story.

– You may want to pull interesting, puzzling, unknown words, or words that are used in an interesting way

– Also, make sure to pull words that may be from a different dialect than your own

– Always pull words that portray a negative connotation to you and why you believe it to read negatively

– Highlight words that are jargon (words you may know what they mean, but the way they are used, seem confusing because you aren’t part of that community who uses them)

Connecting AgentYour Job:• find connections between the novel and your group and the world that we live in• Find connections to:

– Your own life– Happenings at school or in your neighborhood– Similar events that may have happened in the past– Other books, stories, newspapers, news casts, or current events– In our classroom discussions

• Write down the event from the story and how that event connects to something “outside” the book• You will make NO LESS THAN 5 connections per week

Fortune Teller/Predictor• Your Job:

– Predict what is going to happen next based on the reading– Make inferences about the characters’ feelings based on what’s

happening to them in the story, their actions, their feelings, and their thoughts

– Write down the specific scene from the book that made you predict or infer something about a character using page numbers

– Use the setting and other characters’ actions towards that other character as clues and hints

– You will make NO LESS THAN 5 predictions or inferences a week

Summarizer/Art Director• Your Job:

– Summarize the main idea of each chapter read for that week in one or two sentences using• Somebody Wanted But So• Power Passage• 8 integral word gist statement

– Draw a scene that is • Important• Exciting• A turning point• A revelation of a character• An “ah-hah!” moment for you

– You must design a scene for each chapter

Routine

• Literature Circles every MONDAY & FRIDAY

Switch Roles on Friday afternoons (must be in school for this to work smoothly, those of us who are absent frequently will be marked down due to your lack of effort in preparing for your job)• Real world connection: you must go to work

everyday. You must be prepared for this work, everyday.

We will attempt to switch enough times so everyone can experience every role at least once

A pocket folder for every role per core. The role books WILL NOT leave the room. You will use your notes to help you remember what your responsibility is for that role.
