Sue Stuhl, town of Farragut Parks andLeisure Services director, has worked forthe Town for 23 years.

“I’ve always worked in my adult life andeven in my teenage life, so this is just a nat-ural progression for me to be in the workforce,” Stuhl said.

She feels every woman has to decidewhat is right for her.

“For those like me, who made a con-scious decision to work after having chil-dren, it’s important … obviously there’s afinancial gain involved in it, but for methere’s a professional gain, there’s some-thing I needed to do for myself. I needed tobe out in the community working, produc-ing, and so it was important for me,” saidStuhl.

She thinks if females are able to makethe decision to work, especially after hav-

ing children, that it provides them with anadvantage. At a later time it may be hard-er to enter, or re-enter the workforce.

“Having a fairly equal workforce of menand women is a great thing. I think menand women do work differently … and Ithink there is a real advantage of having abalance between the two in order to get allof the perspectives that you need in thebusiness world or the community, public, private, or whatever it is,” she added.

Although Stuhl appreciates the recogni-tion that working women are receiving, shehopes that one-day “having women in theworkplace is a norm … equal pay is obvi-ously another issue. It’s getting better, butit’s still an issue.”

City of Knoxville Mayor Madeline Rogero

Women in the workforce may seem like a topic of the

past, but the rising number of women in prominent

positions is not something to overlook. As the numbers

continue to rise and ratios of men-to-women find

equilibrium in the office, the success of women

in the workplace is visible on numerous levels.

As President of the Farragut West KnoxChamber of Commerce for the past 15years, Bettye Sisco interacts with hun-dreds of business owners. Her expertisein marketing, conflict management andcommunication skills are valuable tothose taking advantage of her knowledge.

Many dream of owning their own busi-ness and have unique ideas, but aren’tsure where to begin. “Set a plan;research and study it to determine thebest organization for it. Stick with thatthe best you can,” Bettye advises.

“Never forget the plan, but be aware change will inevitably happen. Be prepared to make those changes.Promote your business. Make businesscalls in person and utilize social media, but never forget the power of face to facebusiness calls,” she adds.

Both ladies work with the all-volun-teer FBA board of directors to accom-plish its mission of “advocating for theFarragut business community in thepublic policy and other processes andpromoting those businesses and theTown through ‘Shop Farragut’ brandingand community events.” Whether it’spublicizing or gathering input about apotential ordinance, mentoring a newbusiness, planning a community event,or drawing shoppers to the area, theseladies lead the way in helping improvethe business climate and increase salestax dollars to support the outstandingquality of life in Farragut.

agrees and recognizes how important itis to maintain balance in all parts of life.

She believes this advice should over-lap between working women and men.

“Women and men [need to] find thebalance in their lives … particularly if

you have a family. You have to find thatbalance to be able to put in a good day’swork and, at the same time, provide theattention and care a family needs, andtake time for yourself as well,” Rogerosaid.

“It is important to take time, scheduletime with friends and family. I personal-ly, even as mayor, I like to go to my

grandchildren’s events … you have toput that into your calendar. If you have ajob that’s got that kind of flexibility, Ithink it’s important to schedule it in,”Rogero said.

She is not surprised at the number ofwomen in the workforce, and that thenumber continues to grow, because ittakes two incomes for a family. Women

are choosing to balance work, family andlife.

According to Rogero, “Being mayor isrewarding. I always say ‘I love my job,’ Ilove being mayor because I get to workwith so many great people across ourcommunity. The challenge is that thesegreat people don’t always agree!”

When people ask me, "What kind ofstore is ROOST?" my answer is always, "Agood one!"

My vision for ROOST started with thename and its' definition.

ROOST: a verb meaning,"to becomecomfortably established in ones resi-dence or lifestyle" ... The word justseemed to fit. ROOST represents a clevermix. It’s a home furnishings store with acausal flair brought to life by a distinctdesigner vibe. The name serves a dualpurpose, not only does it describe thedesign sensibility of the product offered, but it also defines my need to work inthe town that raised me. The tag line"Come HOME to ROOST," is exactly whatI did ... came home to stay!

I hope everyone will come in, try aseat, share a story and help me spreadthe word, "Come HOME to ROOST!" Formore information contact 865-984-4100or www.roosthome.com.

How to improve yourcompany image

Many people are familiar with theconventional wisdom about firstimpressions. When you only have onechance to make a first impression,it's a good idea to make the most ofthat opportunity. But not every firstimpression inspires fond memories, and while erasing a bad first impres-sion might be impossible, that doesnot mean a second impression can'ttrump its predecessor.

That's especially true for business-es. Businesses typically experience afew stumbles out of the gate, andsometimes those stumbles coincidewith a customer's first encounterwith a business. When such encoun-ters hurt a business' image, a busi-ness owner can employ various

strategies to restore that image andincrease the likelihood that futureinteractions with customers go assmoothly as possible.

• Look the part. A T-shirt andflip-flops may be your ideal outfit, but such attire is rarely appropriatein a professional atmosphere. First-time customers who see employeesdecked out in less formal attire mayfeel the company also takes a laxattitude toward its work, so avoidfashion that might give the wrongimpression.

• Prioritize positive customerservice. Many businesses suffer frombad word of mouth that's spreadwhen past customers share horrorstories of negative experiences with

company employees. Such a problemis easily remedied by prioritizingcustomer service. This includesemphasizing that those who answerthe phones always address cus-tomers respectfully and, whenresponding to emails or engaging inonline chats, write professionalresponses that steer clear of infor-mal language. Customers oftenunderstand that a product may mal-function, but poor customer serviceis inexplicable and will reduce thelikelihood that a customer willbecome a repeat customer.

• Commission a better website.Today's consumers often rely on the

Internet to connect with a business.Consumers may want to peruse arestaurant's menu before booking areservation or view a retailer's onlinecatalogue before walking into thestore. A good website can be a tremen-dous asset to a business, while a badwebsite can drive customers awaybefore they spend so much as a dollar.A good website is informative and easyto navigate. Restaurant owners shouldinclude some photos of their establish-ment on the site to show customersthe type of ambiance they can expectwhen dining. The site's URL shouldinclude only the name of the restau-rant, which makes it easy for potentialcustomers to find the site when using asearch engine. If the name you preferis already taken by a similarly namedestablishment in another region, theninclude your state or city in the URL,such as JoesPizzaNY.com. If you arenot skilled at building websites, hire aprofessional firm to build the site foryou. Such an investment will likely pay

for itself sooner rather than later andwill increase the chances that cus-tomers' first impressions are goodones.

• Establish a social media pres-ence. Another way to rehabilitate orimprove a business' image is to estab-lish a social media presence that con-nects the business with existing andpotential customers. Use the varioussocial media platforms in differentways. A Facebook page can explain thehistory of the company, while Twittercan be used to alert followers to spe-cial promotions or events. Social mediacan also be used to solicit customerfeedback, which can be used to ensureyou are meeting your customers' needsand adapting to meet those needswhen necessary. A business that listensto and actively engages its customers ismore likely to have a positive imagethan one that does not, and socialmedia can be the tool businesses useto connect with those customers.

A poor first impression can be diffi-cult to overcome, but companies cantake several steps to regain consumertrust.
