Leeds Law School appoints new Head
Leeds Metropolitan University has appointed Tom Macdonald as Head of the
Leeds Law School.
Tom has taken up the position this month and joins the Universitys Faculty of
Business and Law from the Solicitors Regulation Authority where he was
Quality and Standards Manager within the Education and Training Unit.
Tom commented: I am very happy to be joining Leeds Met at such an
exciting time in the development of both the University and legal education
and training generally. I look forward to working with the staff and students
and our local and national partners to take the School from strength to
strength over the coming years. I believe that our students have the capacity
to become the leaders of the legal profession of the future, and that we will
provide them with the skills and inspiration to make that vision a reality.
Barbara Colledge, Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law at Leeds
Metropolitan, added: I am delighted that Tom has joined us as Head of our
Leeds Law School. We celebrate this academic year our 70th anniversary of
delivering legal education in the city. Tom brings a breadth of experience to
lead the next phase of our Law Schools history, to expand and build our
international reputation for legal education and contribution to the legal
profession.
Tom began his career as a Barrister specialising in criminal defence and
prosecution. In 2003 he joined the teaching team on the Bar Vocational

Course (BVC) with BPP Law School, rising to become national Director of
BVC Programmes.
In 2008 Tom became Dean of the School of Law at the Honorable Society of
Kings Inns, Dublin, the sole provider of the Barrister-at-Law Degree course in
Ireland.
In 2011 Tom returned to England and was appointed by the Bar Standards
Board as Assistant Chief Examiner for Professional Ethics on the Centralised
Examinations Board for the Bar Professional Training Course, and joined the
Solicitors Regulation Authority as Quality and Standards Manager in the
Education and Training Unit, before accepting the post of Head of the Leeds
Law School this month.

The Destination of Leavers in Higher Education (DLHE) showed that
the proportion of Leeds Metropolitan 2010/11 graduates in work, further
study or both six months after leaving university was 91.87%.
Libraries and Learning Innovation at Leeds Metropolitan was awardedthe CSE standard for the tenth year running in 2012.
In 2012, Leeds Metropolitan was awarded a First in the People &
Planet Green League, a league table of environmentally friendly
universities, for the sixth consecutive year.
