111 Years of Deutsche GrammophonBy Popular Request - Deutsche Grammophon Continues The Celebration of 111 Years of Excellence With Two New Limited Edition Box-Sets Of course we are now 112 years old! But the three levels of the 111 concept - covering repertoire, artists and our label identity - struck a deep chord with you, our fans. Not only were the limited edition box-sets wiped off shop shelves within a few weeks of release, but we and our colleagues were inundated with calls and emails from frustrated fans looking for copies to buy the world over. Together with a new 6-CD set of 111 artists x 111 tracks, we have therefore decided to reprint last year’s 55-CD Collector’s Edition box-set as well as bring out a new 2nd edition – and continue to brand them 111. And this time there is a total of 56 CDs, bringing the combined number of discs in both Collector’s Edition boxes to – what else? – a round 111!

111 Years Of Deutsche Grammophon | The Collector's Edition
Deutsche Grammophon is proud to celebrate its 111th birthday this year (December 6th, to be exact) and as part of the celebration will release a host of products designed to celebrate its rich history from the perspectives of both artistry and technology. Since its founding in 1898, Deutsche Grammophon has strived to be the leader in the classical music recording industry offering the most technologically advanced, highest quality recordings of the newest, brightest stars, as well as prominent, well-established artists. DG’s 111 celebration commemorates the label’s history (it is Universal Music Group’s oldest active label) and forward-thinking ideology (DG introduced the first commercial classical CD in 1983).
President Michael Lang said, ―Deutsche Grammophon remains the
preeminent classical recording company—presenting the finest in recorded
music by the best
artists—while anticipating and fulfilling the evolving interests of its old and new audiences. Deutsche Grammophon is poised for a vibrant future as remarkable as its storied past.‖
This unique collection of 55 CDs forms Deutsche Grammophon’s major release in its 111th-anniversary celebrations. The limited-edition boxed set gathers together many landmark recordings from the past to the present. Most of them -appear complete, as originally programmed, in their original cover-art, and several include additional material.
If you want to read one book before you die let it be "Thiruarutpa" for it
contains solutions for all the problems of man mundane, spritual and divine.

Beethoven's Ninth is justly famous for its setting of Schiller's "Ode to Joy" in its final movement, but what many people don't realize is that there are forty minutes of glorious music before the final movement even begins. The first movement begins in the musical equivalent of a mist, which gradually lifts to reveal the full splendor of the orchestra. The astute listener can even hear a preview of the "Ode to Joy" melody in the second theme. The second movement features a catchy melody that is passed back and forth between the different instruments, while the third movement contains some of Beethoven's most exquisite slow music. As the fourth movement begins, the orchestra plays brief reprises of the first three movements, only to reject them in favor of the famous "Ode to Joy" theme. Beethoven was a master of conveying emotion in his music; by the end of the Ode, you will truly believe that "All creatures drink of joy."For a first taste of Beethoven's Ninth, we recommend either Herbert von Karajan's 1962 recording (with Janowitz, Rössl-Majdan, Kmentt, Berry, pictured above), in which the orchestra conveys a rare intensity and depth of feeling, or his 1977 version (with Tomina-Sintow, Baltsa, Schreier, van Dam), in which the singing is noticeably better but the orchestra doesn't quite reach the same level. Another fine choice is Wilhelm Furtwängler's 1951 recording at the Bayreuth Festival (with Schwarzkopf, Höngen, Hopf, Edelmann), which is arguably the finest performance on record, but is limited somewhat by the recording technology of fifty years ago. Finally, for those who wish to hear the Ninth as (we think) the composer intended, John Eliot Gardiner conducts a compelling performance (with Orgonasova, von Otter, Rolfe Johnson, Cachemaille) using instruments and performance techniques of Beethoven's time.

Notes▼
"It is wonderful to have these two legendary performances so expertly restored and placed together on one disc." – Gramophone
Beethoven's Fifth is perhaps the most famous piece of classical music ever written, and deservedly so. The famous opening four note motif serves as the thematic material for the whole first movement, and it reappears in the third and fourth movements to make the symphony into a unified whole rather than a collection of four individual movements. This unity is apparent in other respects as well: the stormy opening movement is in a dark minor key, and the mood gradually shifts through the middle two movements and culminates in a glorious brass fanfare that opens the finale. Carlos Kleiber's recording with the Vienna Philharmonic still stands as one of the all-time greats.
