Installation steps

• File copy phase: Setup files are copied to a bootable partition (not needed for CD-bootable machines).

• Text mode setup phase: For a clean install, create and format a partition to be used by the OS. Computer is rebooted.

• GUI mode setup phase: Enough software is in place that a convenient GUI can guide the person through the other steps, such as regional settings and computer name.

• Windows Welcome phase: Here is where user accounts can be created, and Windows can be activated.

• Example, 98/XP booting: Do fresh install of Windows 98 before installing Windows XP. This will allow XP’s boot loader to notice and include Windows 98 as an OS in its boot menu

• For the above example, use FAT32 for both, so you can share files (Windows 98 cannot read NTFS)

• For Linux with XP, you could use either OS’s boot loader. The OS installed second will use its boot loader

• To run an app, it must be installed in the OS you are running
