7.1.1 Windows XP Home Edition• For the home user

• Less expensive

• Okay for inexperienced users who:

– Do not need remote corporate network access

– And do not require extra security

• For single CPU systems enhancements:

– Includes improved software and hardware compatibility

– Simplified security

– Fast user switching

– Enhanced multimedia



7.1.2 Windows XP Professional• Includes everything that Home Edition

provides plus

• Network (LAN) support is included

• Has security and networking features required to join in Windows NT, 2000, or XP domain

• Support for dual-processor mainboard

• There are the same in Home and Pro Editions:

– Kernel

– Many system management tools

– Digital media management applications



7.1.2 Windows XP ProfessionalFeatures specific to XP Pro• Remote Desktop

– Allows mobile users to remotely access their corporate desktop

– Administrators can remotely administer client

• Automated System Recovery

• Supports dynamic disks

• Internet Information Services (IIS) Web server

• Logon to an Active Directory domain

• IntelliMirror to centrally-manage software installatin and updates

• Remote profiles: User’s settings follow them from computer to computer on their net, as long as they are XP Pro computers

• Corporate-strength workstation OS

• Several languages supported

• Sysprep: Multiple OS installation-via-network tool



7.1.2 Windows XP ProfessionalFeatures specific to XP Pro

Additional networking features:

• Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP)

• IP Security (IPSec) user interface

• SAP Agent

• Client Service for NetWare

• Network Monitor

• TCP/IP services



7.1.3 Windows XP Professional 64-bit

• For special users: 3D animators, engineers, etc.

• Good for large databases (example, financial)

• Other applications: e-commerce, data mining, high-end graphics, complex mathematics, multimedia

• Requires a 64-bit processor (Intel Itanium)

• Requires a 64-bit mainboard and chipset

• Requires 64-bit applications for maximum performance

• This is a scalable, high performance OS



• The 64-bit edition can work with more memory and virtual memory than 32-bit edition XP Pro or XP Home





• Minimum and Recommended Requirements

“Recommended here means “recommended minimum”, as opposed to “absolute, bare minimum”. A faster processor would yield more satisfactory results.



7.1.4 Windows XP Media Center Edition


• On “Media Center” PCs

• For a powerful home digital media center

• Central location for TV, music, other video and audio needs

• It is a combined hardware and software system

Hardware consists of:

• Advanced graphics card

• TV tuner

• Encoder for writing video or audio to disk


7.2.1 Differences between Windows 2000/9x installation and XPAnd differences from previous versions

• XP provides step-by-step wizards• Files and Settings Wizard for migration of settings, profiles,

and data from a previous computer (see next slide)• Files and Settings Wizard provides several means for

transfer of the data:– Direct cable connection– Network connection– Removable media (floppy, zip disk, or CD-RW)– Removable drive or network drive



7.2.1 Differences between Windows 2000/9x installation and XP Files and Settings Wizard

Note: The User State Migration Tool works like the Files and Settings Wizard, but for migrating numbers of users in a mass network installation



7.2.2 Hardware requirements

• Hardware requirements for installation depend on version of Windows XP to be installed. XP 64-bit Edition will require more hardware capability than Windows XP Home Edition




Recommended minimum hardware for XP Home:

A Pentium 233-MHz processor or faster, with 300 MHz recommended

At least 64 MB of RAM, with 128 MB recommended At least 1.5 GB of available hard disk space A CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive A keyboard and a Microsoft Mouse, or some other

compatible pointing device A video adapter and monitor with Super VGA resolution

of 800 x 600 or higher A sound card, and Speakers or headphones

• Enhanced device driver verifier• Enhanced IP security• Secure Smart Card logon to .NET server• Similar apps are grouped on Taskbar• From Explorer: Burn CDs, publish to Web• Improved setup of network settings• More security (Pro has more than Home)• Updated Remote Access• New Resultant Set of Policy (RSoP) to manage group

policies

• File copy phase: Setup files are copied to a bootable partition (not needed for CD-bootable machines).

• Text mode setup phase: For a clean install, create and format a partition to be used by the OS. Computer is rebooted.

• GUI mode setup phase: Enough software is in place that a convenient GUI can guide the person through the other steps, such as regional settings and computer name.

• Windows Welcome phase: Here is where user accounts can be created, and Windows can be activated.

• The concept can be extended to three or more OS


• Example, 98/XP booting: Do fresh install of Windows 98 before installing Windows XP. This will allow XP’s boot loader to notice and include Windows 98 as an OS in its boot menu

• For the above example, use FAT32 for both, so you can share files (Windows 98 cannot read NTFS)

• For Linux with XP, you could use either OS’s boot loader. The OS installed second will use its boot loader

• To run an app, it must be installed in the OS you are running

7.5.1 Keeping user files Private

• Access this panel by right-clicking C:\ in My Computer, then Properties

• Look at File System to see whether your partition was formatted with FAT32 or NTFS

• If formatted with NTFS, it is possible to make selected folders private or shared

• It is the method used by XP • Right-click a folder icon to
