NoticeboardSadly, Mrs Lindley Wilks died in April. She had never recovered from the loss of her belovedhusband of 60 years, Bill, who died last year. Her unusual name was given after the smalltown in South Africa where she was born. Her family returned to the UK when she was 2years old. She had an interesting life, living all over the country and doing various jobs, fromjoining the Wrens and being seconded to Bletchley Park during the war, to becoming anexpert on cerebral palsy afterwards. She was involved in many activities in the Parish, mostnotably entering several classes in the Spring and Autumn shows each year. She raisedfunds for Shelterbox by selling her handmade craftwork at the Thursday market. Her gardenat Ruan Vean was always as pretty as a picture and beautifully kept, providing a perfectsetting for the summer garden party she and Bill hosted each year.Katie and Sarah, daughters of Lindley and Bill Wilks, would like to thank everyone for theirkindness and support during Mum’s illness. Also, the cards of condolence and attendingMum’s funeral were much appreciated. The flowers in the church were beautiful and manythanks for the wonderful tea afterwards. We also lost Terry (“Nobby”) Lewis, who died suddenly at home on 5th May, aged 65, aterrible shock to all who knew him. NoticeboardOn 4th May, a parking attendant appeared out of the blue and ticketed a number of carsparked on yellow lines in New Road. Arnold Phillips, Paul Penrose and Brett Jose werejust some of those unlucky enough to get a £70 fine (reduced to £35 if paid within two weeks).A couple of days later, some new signs detailing the summer parking restrictions wereerected on this stretch of road. Please would anyone who has recently moved to the Parish contact me so that I can giveyou a suitable introduction via the Gazette.Did you know? The Gazette is available online atwww.any-village.com/UK/England/Cornwall/Ruan-Minor/ parishmagazines.aspxWithout our advertisers, the Gazette would not exist, so please try to use their serviceswhenever you can. They are local and deserve our support. When you do use them, pleasemention the Gazette. If you know of any local suppliers that may benefit from advertising inthe Gazette, please bring it to their attention.Income from advertisers and subscribers only just covers the printing costs, and the Gazettefinances seem to be permanently on a knife-edge. Please consider making a donation if youcan. Our Treasurer, John Fallows, would sleep a little easier if there was a float to see usthrough the ebb and flow of income and expenditure from month to month.

The sun shone and the bells rang in St.Columb Minor church on April 2nd, whenAnnmarie Phillips and David Watts weremarried. Her father, Arnold, gave heraway. Eileen, looking very pretty in navyand pink, sat with family in the front pew.

Annemarie wore astunning sagegreen silk fulllength dress andcarried lillies. Herbridesmaids wereSophie Pound inpink silk andMatilda Phillips incream. Annmarie

and David’s sons, Ross (3) and Raife (2)looked very handsome in pinstriped suits!Lots of family and friends, many of whomhad travelled from Cadgwith, gatheredoutside the church for informal photos. Thereception was held at the Bay Hotel inNewquay, overlooking fantastic Fistralbeach with an incoming tide. David and hisbest man made some entertaining

speeches before the delicious weddingbreakfast.

Nicky Skewes made and iced her veryspecial and gorgeous 3 tier fruit cake, andmade a sweet little boat with the Watts familyand cats in it. The boat, which was on top ofthe cake, was called “Watts on”! SarahStephens hand painted all three tiers, andthe result was absolutely breathtaking. Thetop layer were mackerel, the middle layer allthe fishing boats in the Cove. The bottomlayer was Annmarie’s childhood view of theCove itself with lots of primroses, which are

a family favourite. Thedetail, skill and talentwere out of this worldand caused muchinterest anddiscussion! Many ofus stayed the nightand fun was had byall!

The swallows have returned to theWinch House, the euchre pack has beenput to one side, rods, reels and tackleboxes dusted off and punts painted andready, all hailing the welcome return ofThursday Night Fishing Competitions! This year celebrates 15 years of anglingfun and games. There have been manymemorable moments, the ones that gotaway and, of course, the ones that didn’t!I’m sure it will be another great season in2011 for all involved.Due to poor weather the previous week, the 12th of May saw us in pursuit of onewe haven’t had for a while, the Cod. Thelast Cod comp’ was in May 2003 andwas won by Keith Johnson, who holdsthe record at 11lbs 9½oz. A beautifulevening greeted our hopeful band and, although they weren’t quite as big asthat, there were plenty of fish to be had.Congratulations to Mike Nunn andTommy Phillips who had something verynice to go with their chips. Recreation Ground NewsBy the time you read this, the May Festival willhave been and gone. Hopefully, it will have been asuccessful weekend, with glorious weather, andeveryone will have had a great time! As always, weare grateful for the many people who have(hopefully!) helped out, especially with themarquee, running the bar and side shows, and allthe background tasks needed to make everythingwork.Next thing on our calendar is the AGM on 8th Juneat 7.45pm. We meet on the Recreation Ground, outside if it’s a nice evening, and it’s usually arelaxed meeting, helped by a glass or two of wine(no promise!). This is an important meeting, andwe would like as many as possible to attend. Wewould especially like to see someone comeforward to represent the School or the Youth Club,as neither of these organisations are currentlyrepresented on our committee. We hope to keepthe number of full committee meetings to 2 peryear, including the AGM, so it shouldn’t take toomuch of your time. We now have a separate sub-committee who organise our fund-raising events, and also meetings to handle the pavilion project –new members would be more than welcome toeither group! Or – you would be welcome to cometo the AGM just to see what we do.Progress report on the pavilion – the planningapplication is now in, just waiting for it to bedecided upon. We hope to make applications for

grant funding over the Summer, initially with “SportEngland”. Our architect is investigating “green”heating options for us. We will probably includeeither “ground source” or “air source” heating toprovide a level of background heating, at minimalrunning cost, all through the winter months.Last month, I wrote that I had made an initialapproach to the Parish Council regarding using thegranite pillars stored in the car park to replace thedamaged benches. I am grateful to the Council foragreeing to let us have the granite pillars to use inthis way. I have removed, and disposed of, all thedamaged seats and will be moving the graniteposts onto the concrete bases, where the seatswere, to replace them.It is unfortunate that I have to end with a complaintagain! There have been two incidents in the lastmonth or two where properties adjoining theRecreation Ground have been damaged by golfballs. First, I don’t think the Recreation Ground isa particularly safe place for golf, then, even if youare sure there’s no risk of hitting anyone, surely itwould be common sense to hit the ball away fromthe houses! We don’t have a huge list of rulesdictating what can’t be done on the RecreationGround, but do expect users to show considerationfor other users and for our neighbours. Manythanks for your continued support.Mike Fleetwood, Chairman. Tel: 290365

Hello again everyone. The Annual General Meeting, held on 13th May 2011, signalled the end of another yearin the life of the Hall. The AGM was quite well attended, although it is disappointing thatmore people don’t support these important events which help shape the future of the Halland, as a consequence, the development of the community in which we live and work.

The meeting and, in particular, The Annual Report - 2010/2011 confirmed highlysuccessful performances in three main areas of the Hall’s operation:1 The Hall’s financial performance was, once again, very successful and our policy of

only spending that which we can afford is of paramount importance.2 The programme of activities and entertainment we delivered responded directly to our

responsibilities under the Scheme Agreement with The Charity Commission. It wasextremely well supported and more people than ever used the Hall last year.

3 We completed a comprehensive programme of improvements to Hall premises andequipment with pride of place going to our new kitchen.

None of this could have been achieved without the help of all those who supportthe Hall and attend our various functions and activities. For this we are trulygrateful and long may it continue please.Jill Thomas, Liz Outten, David Endean, Dave and myself were elected as trustees and,at the subsequent committee meeting, Lorraine Scott and Andrew Fletcher wereappointed as co-opted members. We are pleased that David Endean was re-appointedas Chairman for a second year. Dave was re-elected as Honorary Treasurer and I, formy sins, will do another year as Secretary. If anyone would like to get involved with aview to helping out on the committee in the future, please let us know and we would bedelighted to have a chat. All appointments and contact details have been posted on themain village noticeboards. As a result of our request for suggestions on a venue for our planned coach trip, we havebooked a coach to take us on a day trip to Exeter on Monday 11th July 2011. We willconfirm exact costs and times as soon as we can but, in the meantime, bookings canbe made by contacting Dave or me on 290536 or calling in to the Market onThursdays. With its magnificent Cathedral, a fine pedestrianised shopping centre, awealth of historical interests and much more, Exeter provides a splendid day out for allpreferences. We are always keen to receive suggestions for different activities and entertainment soif you have any bright ideas please let us know. We would be very pleased to hear fromyou.Have a good June. Bye for now,Janet Gascoigne.

It had to happen. The Mixed Bunch’s longwinning run came to an abrupt end whenthey were defeated by a Buccaneers teamwho were on top form and who took the AprilChampion’s Crown by a massive 2½ points(well, it was massive when compared withrecent winning margins).HOWEVER, the hint of scandal was rifethroughout the village on the morningfollowing the Quiz!!!!Rumour had it that Danny (The Brains)Meek had been nobbled the night before.Following news that he had been somewhatstressed with the pressure of captaining thewinning team for such a long time, he waspresented with some ‘Anti Stress Pills’ priorto the Quiz commencing. Danny’s perfor-mance seemed somewhat below par and it isunderstood that forensic tests were carriedout on the pills by the appropriate authoritiesimmediately after the event. Was it theopposition? Was it the Quizmaster?? Was itjust all in the mind??? Only time will tell. All controversy apart, it was yet anotherclose fought battle with four teams in with achance of the title right to the bitter end. Itwas The Buccaneers who eventuallyfinished the strongest and who werecrowned worthy winners.

Gardening in JuneWell it cannot be argued that we have

not had a glorious spring although it mayhave been a little too dry for some. June isstill a busy month in the garden. There is lessto sow now but the emphasise shifts towardsmaintenance in the garden so as to keepthings looking good.

June is the month when I regard theherbaceous perennials are at their best. These plants put on a lot of growth in thespring but they have the advantage of havinga sound root system already in place and soflower earlier in the year than those beddingannuals, which were sown earlier in thespring. Work on these plants is just makingsure the staking is secure and doing its joband removing all those dead flowers toencourage a second flush of flowering.Hardy geraniums are good in this respect as,once they have finished flowering, they oftenlook a bit tatty and moth eaten so it is bestthen to trim off the top growth. Within acouple of weeks a mound of fresh greengrowth will have appeared and more flowersare likely in the autumn.

June has traditionally been regardedas the month of the rose due to the fact thatthey are generally at their best now. Thisyear they do seem to have come on earlierbut that is true for most things. I think we canput that down to the fact that we had a properwinter but also an early winter starting inNovember. There is little to do to your rosesnow apart from dead heading them, they willalso benefit from some feeding. The bestthing is some proprietary rose fertilizer but, ifyou have none to hand, use some generalfertiliser. Do keep an eye out for aphids onall your plants at this time of year - catch itearly and a squeeze between your fingerand thumb will solve the problem before itbecomes one. If it’s a bigger problem tryusing some soapy water which will dry upthose pesky creatures. Only if all else fails, give it a spray with an insecticide. Blackspot

is always a problem down here on yourroses; a lot of this is due to our moist andvery clean air. To combat this, pick offaffected leaves as much as is reasonable. Also grow your bushes quite hard, so not toomuch nitrogen, as this will give soft growth. Ifthe problem of blackspot really annoys you, then you can spray for it using a fungicide, but this is only prevention not a cure.

Your sweet peas should be growingaway really well now. You need to keepthese tied in, so that they do not flopeverywhere. Once they start flowering keepcutting the flowers, as this will keep themflowering instead of setting seed. It is a goodexcuse for having some flowers indoors andletting that heady scent waft throughout thehouse. Mine are grown for exhibition and sothey are treated in quite a special manner. Igrow them in what is called a cordon fashion, this involves training a single stem up,removing side shoots and tendrils. Thisshould give longer, stronger and straighterstems with better quality blooms.

All frost has now safely passed soplant out your dahlias. If you have not doneso yet, give them plenty of humus in the soilto retain moisture and plant them out withplenty of space between them. I plant mine3 feet apart and still I have trouble gettingbetween them later in the year. They do givea lovely colourful show of all shades and ifyou keep cutting the blooms they will floweruntil the first frosts of the autumn.

Your clipped garden hedges willprobably need a trim by now, if the urge hasnot got to you already. I generally clipleylandii hedges twice: now or before andagain in the autumn. It depends on how neatyou like your hedges. Most need at least twotrims in a year but some, especially privet, can take more to keep them crisp looking. Now is also the time to cut backyour Clematis Montana if it has got too unrulyand is bullying every thing in sight. Cut it

back to shape just a bit smaller than requiredand it will soon grow back to the requiredsize and have enough time left in the seasonto put on the necessary flowering wood.

June is the month that I like to sow thebulk of my biennial flowers like Wallflowers,Sweet William, Canterbury bells, Foxglovesand Bellis. These can all be sown outdoorsin a well-prepared seedbed. Dig the groundover well and remove all the weeds andperennial roots. There is no need to add anyorganic matter but work the ground down sothat it is a very fine tilth. This may mean thatyou have to tread it down using a silly walkand then rake it over more than once. Thensow your seed in shallow drills but first waterthe bottom of the drill with just the spout ofthe watering can. This extra moisture willhelp the seed germinate. Cover the seedover and wait for them to grow away. Whenthey are large enough to identify, weed therows, then in the autumn they can betransplanted into their final positions.Alternatively you can do as I do and sowthem as you would most half-hardy seeds, that is in seeds tray then prick them out intopots.

keep the hoe going in the veg plot.Use it when the sun is shining - it will dry upthe small weeds and save you a lot of workin the long term. There is still time to sowmany things like peas, runner beans; Frenchbeans, carrots, swedes and cabbage. Alsokeep sowing salads like lettuce, radish andspring onions. It is still not too late to sowsome marrows, squashes, pumpkins orcourgettes if you tackle it early in the monthand if not many places are selling plants now.

Those early potatoes that you plantedmust be coming on by now. It has been verydry so they may still be on the small side.Once that ground is cleared, you can work itover and plant out brassicas or leeks in thatarea. They will enjoy the well worked soil.

Those of you that had some exhibitionleeks will have planted them out by now. They will be well established, and it is time tostart to slowly blanch them up. This involvescovering the stem so that it turns white andwill be more succulent. I use strips of

Gardening by David Endeanbuilders’ damp proof membrane for this. Startoff with blanches six or eight inches high;then, as the season goes on, you makehigher blanches eventually up to 24 inchhigh. Wrap the blanches around the leek andtie in place with string. You will most likelyneed to support the leek with a cane. If youdo not have the membrane and do not wantthe expense, then you can use cardboard butthis will only last one season.

Well I will be doing the more mundanetasks this month, like mowing the lawn, watering and feeding the hanging basketsand tubs, perhaps sowing some herbs inpots. Inevitably, I will be pulling out all thoseweeds that I have yet to get around to sortingout. But I do hope to get some time to look atthe garden stands at some of the largershows and have a nose around somegardens in Mullion at the end of the month intheir Garden Safari.

But now things are looking good in thegarden, take some time out and enjoy yourgarden.

CADGWITH PILOT GIG CLUB NEWSIsles of Scilly World Championships 2011

Cadgwith Gig Club once again made itsannual pilgrimage to the World Pilot GigChampionships on the Isles of Scilly, whichthis year handily coincided with the RoyalWedding Weekend. The sport continues togrow with this, the 22nd championships, attracting 124 boats with the larger clubstaking up to 5 crews for each race.

The event began with a calm sea andevening sunshine for the Friday nightVeterans races back to St Mary’s Quay fromSt Agnes. We didn’t field a ladies’ crew thistime (just too youthful), and our men’s crewwas scrambled last minute, consisting ofElwyn Jones, Chris Langley (his first racethis millennium – welcome back), and 4friendly Truro rowers, coxed by RachelHolder (first time coxing St Agnes race). Arespectable performance, with Rosecoming in mid fleet at 32/64. Rose wasalongside Steve and David Holyer rowing inthe CRAB gig Dall Lewer for the first half ofthe race, the blind crew coming in anadmirable 37th, to a big cheer.

An overnight thunderstorm made thingslively for those under canvas and Saturdaydawned bright and breezy, with sometypical lumpy sea conditions for the long StAgnes races. First up were the ladies, withthe A crew in Tamarisk (Emma George,Sam Jane, Katie Jose, Naomi Harry, KimSmith, Sharon Bray, cox Dave Jane) and Bin Rose (Sarah Rudd, Judith Preston, SueAtkinson, Dani Yeats, Nicci Addison, RachelHolder, Cox Sally Oldrieve). These are themost spectacular races of the weekend, with the colourful scene of over 100 boatslining up close to St Agnes, for the long raceback to St Mary’s Hugh Town Quay. The Ascame in 42nd, and the Bs recovered wellfrom a tangle on the start, to come in 63rd.Special mentions for Sue, first time at theWorld Championships, and Naomi, first timerowing for Cadgwith at Scilly.

In the men’s St Agnes race, Cadgwith A(Tom Alden, Stuart George, Matt Holyer,Stevie Jane, Ed Langley, JamesFitzimmons – Cox Dave Jane) came in43rd. Congratulations to Ed and Jamescompeting in their first Scilly Champion-ships. Cadgwith B were a bit thin on theground, but Elwyn’s ability to pressgangrowers on the beach saved the day, withElwyn, David Holyer, Chris Langley, FrankCare and Brett Jose joined for various racesby rowers from Bridport, Flushing andMylor, Scilly and Holland! The scratch Rosecrew, (coxing over weekend shared byRachel Holder and Katie Jose) came in 79thout of 124 gigs in the St Agnes race.

Saturday afternoon saw the first of the NutRock heats – sprints from Tresco back to StMary’s Quay, in groups of 12, with the firsttwo boats moving up, and the last twodropping down. Unfortunately the Mens Bdropped a heat, but all other crews stayedput, the Ladies B coming close to going up,being pipped to 3rd in their heat.

Sunday was a grey, breezy and cool day,but thankfully the rain never reallyamounted to too much. Two races wererowed by each crew on Sunday, with thesecond race of the day deciding finalchampionship placings.

Ladies B rowed strongly, coming in 2nd inthe morning race, which took them up agroup to E. Another good row in the finalgave an overall placing of 54th, animpressive leap from 88th last year. LadiesA maintained their place in group D, andcame through to take 43rd out of 123,comparing favourably with last year’splacing of 41st /113. The Ladies race waswon by Falmouth in their brand new boatBlack Rock, with the Dutch girls inVliegende Hollander taking second.

Cadgwith Men’s A had a tough battle in thefinal with local rivals Coverack, but unfortu-

nately for Tom, it was his brother Mark’sManacle Belle crew that snatched 39thplace, Tamarisk coming 40th. Oh well can’twin them all! The Men’s B scratch crewcame in 94th in the final, having won theirtussle for the line with the Culdrose crewwho came in 95th in Daedalus. Falmouthmade the double, taking the men’s as wellas the ladies’ title in Black Rock, from Cara-don in Essa, and Mounts Bay in their newgig Cormoran.

On Sunday evening Cadgwith rowers, family members and supporters gatheredfor our customary celebratory meal, onceagain hosted by the Bishop and Wolf(thanks to Mo Jones for co-ordinatingorders).

Anyone on the first Scillonian back onMonday (myself, Dani, Katie, Sue, Nicci,Sarah, Diddy, Frank and Matt included),copped for some trying times, as the strongwinds made for a rough crossing. Nevermind we thought as Penzance came intosight, all would be over soon. Little did weknow that 3 hrs later we would still be onboard, rolling round Mts Bay! It provedimpossible to bring her stern to the quayagainst the wind, so there was no choicebut to wait for the tide to rise, to allow usinto the safety of the inner quay. Needlessto say, we were all mightily pleased toeventually get back on dry land. Thesecond sailing was cancelled, leavingsome with an unplanned additional night onthe islands.

Seven hour Scillonian ordeal aside, a finetime was had by all, and we are grateful toeveryone who contributed to Cadgwith’sinvolvement in the Championships –rowers, coxes, cheering supporters andfamily members, and those who havetowed gigs to and from Penzance. I’m suremost of us will plan to be back! Thanks goto Mullion Cove Hotel for sponsoring crewvests. Special thanks to Dave Jane, for allthe time and energy he has put into trainingthe crews since Christmas, and Em

George for co-ordinating slots. Manycongratulations to Kim Smith and JagoRosevear, who got engaged whilst on theislands, and we all wish them well for theirfuture together.

Back safely on the mainland, we’re lookingforward to a busy summer of racing, in-cluding our own Buller Day, which thisyear will fall on Saturday 6th August.Cadgwith Gig Club is always pleased towelcome new members, both social andcompetitive rowers, so please do get intouch if you would like to get involved.

PS Buller Cup – This year, our trip toNewquay for a night of friendly racingand a few beers, will be on Sat 2nd July. The bus will leave from Ruan Minorc5pm. Please come along to supportour strong ties with Newquay. Sign up inthe gig shed to book your bus place.

I seemed to inherit the responsibility for theMedical Locker on the Lighthouse Service ship,‘CAPE DON’. This is the one I also mentioned inlast month’s contribution here.

Australians are far from the tough people theywould like to think they are. The crew on the‘DON seemed to have a low tolerance thresholdto injury and no tolerance of pain whatever. TheMedical facilities were much in demand; toomuch really. I solved this by instituting a policy ofEpsom Salts for any internal pain or com-plaint;and I mean any, headaches are definitelyinternal. I expounded the theory that consti-pation was probably the origin of any internalsymptom and I wouldn’t treat anything internaluntil constipation had been thoroughly ruledout. This reduced demand. As for externalinjuries, apart from the really bad ones I ex-pounded a similarly unpopular theory thatinfection was to be avoided at all costs. Mychosen method was the liberal application ofacriflavine, a painful and astringent antiseptic. This was equally unpopular and resulted in theincreased use of the boots issued by the Servicefor use when walking on coral or spinifex andeven some increased self-care by the crew.

In any event the demands on the Medical Lockerfell dramatically.

I also had a chemist in Framantle make up someplacebo pills, bright red, filled with harmlessgarlic, with a lurid label saying something like‘ONLY TO BE TAKEN UNDER MEDICAL SUPER-VISION’. I kept these locked in the poison locker, inside another locked cupboard inside the lockedMedical Locker and I made a great production ofusing these if someone claiming great pain waspersistent. These placebos always worked.

I suppose I was lucky not to lose anybody tosomething serious but we all had passedstringent medicals before joining the ship so myassumption that everyone was generally healthywas reasonable; I thought so anyway.

LIFE ON THE EDGE

It may have been the fine vintage crimefiction writer Dashiel Hammet who said, ina nicotined drawl,

‘Inspiration is ninety-nine percent Applicationof Backside to Typewriter Chair’.Too right. Imagine him creaking in from thekitchen, shot-glass in hand, shirt cross-garteredwith braces, Lucky Strike clamped in the cornerof a wry mouth above a stubbled jaw, sittingdown at the old Smith Corona and rattling outthree thousand gritty, pithy, and saleable wordsbefore the sun comes up. That is emphaticallythe way to do it. I’ve NO time for the artisticnature that must simper away the afternoon inan absinthe fog to the sad sounds of the can-canbefore sauntering to the garret and creatingmasterpieces by candlelight only to put them inthe stove like a ninny when hypothermia sets in,or – like Richard Wagner – surround itself withvelvets and brocades and the sweet perfumes ofother people’s mistresses in order to stir thecreative juice, (although I now have a sneakingsuspicion that I’ve been missing out on awhacking lot of fun) because I KNOW that theway you achieve your art is simply: to Do It.

Thus do I endorse Hammet. Or perhaps,Raymond Chandler? You will have to check foryourselves. Searching shelves for referencebooks or even moving to where I can Access theInternet is currently OUT, and I’m pained that Inow have to question the truth of the statement, because I am very much applied to my chair andso far I am NOT inspired.

Despite literary leanings I’m of anoutdoor disposition, much given to vigour.Apart from that old crash damage that could failmy body its MOT, I’m robust, and the fact thatI am crocked by the light diversion of carrying apiano down the cliff, and that activityundertaken with three strong people to aid me, isboth injury and insult. Yet crocked I am. ‘Crackgoes his Sacro-Iliac’ was a line from some ill-judged Stage Musical about – of all things - theInquisition, and, I now know exactly how it felt. On a mockingly geriatric footstool sit myfeet, flip-flopped in case day warms up; I’ve a

rug over my legs in case it doesn’t. My old, oldRussian coat conceals khaki shorts and what inthe Flower-Power days was called a Tank-Topand is now known appealingly in trailer-trashcircles as a Wife-Beater. A scarf - of themagnitude, though fortunately not thepolychromaticity, of that which was thesignature accessory of Tom Baker whenportraying the historically accurate Doctor Who– is wound around and around to support myneck. This stylish ensemble is topped off by asort of Hyper-Hat bought to be worn on stageand now much underused in that arena; but, ithas a cartwheel brim that shades the eyesenough to make the dim screen of my failingword-processor visible, even outdoors. Thefounders of the American Hat Company couldnot possibly have foreseen this virtue when theyfirst hung out their shingle, but there it is. Theywere straight-shooting, those guys. Unlike theGenuine JB Stetson, an upmarket product thatdistinguishes, if that’s the word, its interior witha satin lining bearing a sunset oleograph of acowboy in chaps who is crouched feeding hispony with the contents of his Stetson Hat - withlittle regard for the result of putting it back onhis glossy locks, left-over oats and all – theAmerican Hat Company announces itself inguileless Gilt on serviceable brown.

‘American Hat Company’ it says andstates its pedigree via a sign like a pair ofwooden waterwings clasped in the beak of aneagle probably drawn by the seven year olddaughter of the sales-manager. The right arm ofthis oddity reads ‘1915’ and the left one statesunusually, ‘ESTB.’ Below the eagle, a zingiertypeface assures us redundantly that theoperatives of the American Hat Company are, guess what: Hat Manufacturers. It adds that theydo this in Houston, Tex., in USA and makes nofurther claims, unlike another hat I oncefavoured that trumpeted its impermeability andthen in a cloudburst leaked black dye down myface and into my collar to the fascination of aboatload of Scandinavians who asked if I werein National Costume as a Chimney Sweep.

It’s refreshing to have labels say what they mean and no more; by comparison, the splendidStetson, (with a separate ‘X’ branded into its Genuine Leather headband for every beaver that hasdonated its skin that the Stetson-wearer may go so stylishly hatted) is putting over a LifestyleMessage. Purchase our hat, it says, and you too can look like a type who Rides the Range and isjust too manly to be bothered taking a nosebag along for his loyal Cayuse.

I shall be riding no ranges just now; but I must hang on to my hat, for a North Westerly hastaken over from yesterday’s sunny flat calm, bringing echoes of the ice. Guessing that a raggedrectangle of blue between the lumbering clouds might eventually line up with the sun, I hadprepared for the pleasure of coinciding the first mind-sharpening coffee of the day with the Castingof a Clout – for the May, along with the Sloe, has never been more spectacularly out - when ashadow cut the slight sunbeam and a jackdaw clanked onto the roof, shaking its head and sneezingrepeatedly. Simultaneously, the chill of the morning that had been worrying at my wrappings finallygot through and I, too, sneezed, a spasm as welcome to the injury as laughter. In that moment allcreation and I became one. The jackdaw’s brilliant eye met mine and then, sneezing completed, thebird flew silently off over the sea leaving me to reflect that, as Plato said, wise men speak becausethey have something to say, fools because they have to say something. I have crossed that divide, for inspiration has also flown; the world is now so full of information that I have nothing to add.Where once I wrote polemics, today I wrote of hats. The Edge has now crept a little too close andafter a happy decade and more I must now thank you all for the many compliments you have paidto my journal and, retire. The great Lexicographer Dr. Johnson said ‘Only a blockhead ever wroteexcept for money’ so along with Plato’s damning quote, it is doubly time for me to put up theshutters on regular contribution to our beloved Gazette.

For now at least, farewell from the Edge. JXC.

The flying fisherfolkof old Portlebm Town

André Ellis

Have you ever heard of people flying likebirds? No me neither, well that was until Iheard a story told to me by an oldPortlebmer I met while walking on theWrassling fields cliffs just last year.

He said it all started back in 1884, the verysame year as when the port’s famousBickford-Smith Institute and 70ft clock towerwere completed.

The bluebells were silently ringing on thenearby cliffs and the clumps of white Maytree blossoms on the hedgerows werelooking like icing on Christmas cakes.

It was the day after Flora and theHelstonians and Portlebmers were enjoyinga quiet day walking around the harbourwhen the peace was shattered by analmighty “SHRIEK” which also frightened all

the gulls off the quay sides.

Up on Buenos-Aires Row, Granny Boswellhad been pegging out her washing whenshe let out the shriek as she suddenly andmysteriously took off and started to fly like abird, joining the Jackdaws and Swallowsoverhead.

It wasn’t long before she was joined byBerty Blacksmith the baker, then GingerGinks the fisherman, Howard the carpenter, the whole Pengerthick family, ZakeriaTrelor the tailor from Chapel Terrace, UncleTom from Low Bar Road, Jane and GeorgeMatthews from up the Gue, Tommy treacle,a dozen boat builders from Kitto’s yard - infact, half of the village of Porthleven werenow flying around in a great flock.

“What on earth has happened”? Asked

Yoga with Tanya

Berty as he flew past Granny with the speed of a swift , and being a bit deaf she onlyheard… “Earth has” .., and looked back at him with equal puzzlement.

Scores of Fishermen, their wives and children, the vicar, shop keepers, the local tramp,Old Barnibus and Ginger the cat all came out to see what was going on and all in turn tookto the air and flew around, some went way up high and glided around like a Buzzard, others swooped and skimmed the sea like swifts in spring.

For some it was fun and for others it was terrifying,

Things changed when they realised that they couldn’t land. Hour’s went by as more andmore people took off and joined the flock of villagers circling around, even people whoheard about the incident and came down to ogle, found themselves up with them,

The blame was levelled at Granny Boswell herself, being a local Mystic, fortune teller andpart time Witch she must have been meddling with nature for this to happen.

Billy Pethic came up with some good ideas to stop people taking to the air, to wear leadboots or carry a hand bag with heavy stones in it, or wear divers’ lead weighted belts, orjust carry something heavy.

They were becoming known as “The flying fisher folk of old Portlebm Town” and word wasspreading.

But no one could come up with an answer to the situation, and then someone suggestedthat they consult the wise old man of Tregonning hill “Cap’n Willy Joe Jenkins”.

To be continued next month.

3. Matters Arising: there were no matters arising from the Minutes.4. Police Report: although PCSO Berry was unable to attend she had emailed a report to the Clerk.

One crime had been reported of a burglary to an insecure shed compared to two crimes during thesame period in the previous year. The format of the reports was to be changed to them being prepared on a calendar monthly basisinstead of from meeting to meeting as it would be easier to maintain accuracy.PCSO Berry will be attending the Ruan Minor Chapel lunch on 17 May to advise on SCAMS but sheis willing to discuss any other community policing concerns at that meeting. If anyone has any crimes they wish to report please telephone 08452 777444.

5. Reports from local groups: Councillor Cooper asked if invites had been sent out to local groups, the Clerk advised this had not been done. It was felt invites should be sent out next year to includethe Church, Playgroup, Village Hall, Youth Club, Football Club, Rally, Spring Show, HorticulturalSociety and the Winch Committee in addition to the groups who attended or submitted reportsbelow.Gig Club – this is a small but busy club with two mens’ and ladies’ teams attending the GigChampionships in May. Last year the Juniors had retained the Under 16s title. The winter had beenbusy with maintenance and several fund raising events had been held throughout the year.National Trust – the Trust had conducted a lot of educational work with Grade Ruan andLandewednack schools and had hosted a school play. The orchard had been used for differentevents with a number of volunteers involved. The Trust is responsible for the maintenance of thefootpath from Sea Acres to Church Cove and has organised grazing and scrub clearance in openareas.Future plans – there are changes in the Trust, the wardens are now called rangers, all NationalTrust staff living in Trust accommodation will be having to vacate these properties so the rangersare looking to find accommodation locally. The bridge at Poltesco will be replaced in the next eighteen months.Concern was expressed by Councillors at the Trust employees no longer receiving accommodationwith their jobs. The National Trust representative confirmed the Trust was receiving payment from CornwallCouncil for footpath maintenance.Community Trust – Councillor Freeman circulated an Annual Report on the activities of the Trustto those present and described and discussed the activities of the Trust.Recreation Ground - Councillor Fleetwood reported fundraising activities were held each year tocover running costs, the largest of which is the grass cutting. The insurance is paid by the ParishCouncil and any surplus funds have been put towards the proposed new Pavilion.Councillor J Trewin (Vice-Chairman) joined the meeting.Plans have been prepared for current and future use of the Recreation Ground and the proposeddevelopment plans were outlined. Estimated costs for a new pavilion are £100 000/120 000 and

current funds put aside for this project stand at £20 000.Methodist Chapel – membership is still falling, now 10. A lot of money has been spent onrefurbishments and they are considering building a new kitchen and toilets but this is significantexpenditure. It was commented that although the Chapel may be a small group it is very welcoming to visitorsat events.Autumn Show – an excellent Autumn Show had been held with numbers up on the previous yearalthough a slight loss had been sustained on the year. The Show is going from strength to strengthand has a young committee with good ideas.Grade Ruan Gazette – Ginny Sealey who has been an excellent editor of the Gazette for some fouryears has passed the editorship to Moira Hurst with effect from the May edition. John Fallows tookover as Treasurer in October 2010 and Sally Sugrue will be taking on the distribution with effectfrom the May edition. The finances remain balanced, with sufficient advertising to pay for printingeach edition. However, John Fallows is actively recruiting more advertisers to ensure that thereserve fund remains intact.

6. Other community mattersCornwall Councillor C Rule – Councillor Rule advised she still had some funds available for specificprojects in the Community Pot. Details can be obtained from the Clerk or the Cornwall Councilwebsite under Community Pot.She had not received any feedback on the concerns raised about the closed car park at KennackSands.Highways were going to look and assess the situation regarding the water running across thehighway at New Road.It was reported there is still an offensive smell at Hervan Lane.Councillor Rule was asked if she could clarify the situation regarding Mullion Youth Club followingmedia reports. Councillor Cooper declared an interest at this point as she is a trustee.Councillor Rule reported the Youth Club which is a registered charity is in the hands of theadministrators. She felt the recent report in the paper was unpleasant and unjustified as thetrustees have worked very hard to save the club. She wanted to make it clear that Cornwall Councilhad never owned the building, it had been bought by the community for the community. CornwallCouncil has bought services from the hall but has not made any grants towards it, although it hadmade a loan of £35 000 which remains unpaid. Council services from the building have not beencut, it is only because the building is closed that they have not been running.Members of the Public – those present advised the Council that an application for a permanententertainment and alcohol licence from a marquee at the Chycarne campsite had been advertisedin the West Briton. They were concerned that this application is significantly larger than thecurrent use which has been tolerable in the past, and with a larger volume of people using theproposed facility on a permanent basis they are concerned this will become a nuisance to thenearby residents. By comparison, a similar application at Nampara was required to incorporatesound insulation as a condition of their licence but this is not going to be possible with a marquee.Cornwall Councillor Rule advised the Parish Council cannot comment on licensing applications andif residents wanted to raise concerns they should do so or the presumption is the application willbe approved. It was commented there has been a lot of development in Kuggar and concerns raised which donot appear to be heard.Clerk to write to Licensing, Planning and the Police to raise concerns. There being no other issues raised the Annual Parish Meeting closed at 8.45pm to be immediatelyfollowed by the April Monthly Meting of the Grade Ruan Parish Council.

Live the resurrection life! What are the things that really make you happy? I imagine most of us would say thatit’s being with family, friends and those people who we care the most about.‘Happiness’ is now, of course, identified for us by the media - all those endless adverts- marketing psychology and the hidden persuaders - which try to tell us that materialpossessions: money; the latest gadgets/gizmos/fashion/furniture/cars - are the onlyreal things that will make us happy. You name it, they’ll try and sell it to you as a ’musthave’!Yet so often - if and when we acquire these material things - we don’t actually seem tobe any happier, any less stressed, any less self-fulfilled. Something is still missing.Jesus, in his parables, speaks of things that have a greater value and are worth havingat all costs. His parables speak of the kingdom of heaven – that future time when Godwill put an end to suffering and death, to sickness, famine, war and oppression. Whatis unique in the message of Jesus is that, in his words and deeds, the kingdom wasbreaking into the present. God’s loving presence was being experienced in the ministryof Jesus. And those who grasped this were having their views of life turned upside down.In Matthew’s Gospel we find two of Jesus’ most well known parables about worth andvalue: the treasure found in a field and the merchant who searches for fine pearls(Matthew13:44-46). In these two parables, something of enormous value is found. In thefirst, a man finds some treasure in a field. He’s possibly a day-labourer and sotechnically you could argue that what he finds isn’t his because he doesn’t own the field. So he hides the treasure he’s found, goes and sells all his possessions so that he hasenough money to come back and buy the field with the treasure in it. In the second, amerchant finds a valuable pearl - one that he can’t afford to buy. So he goes and sellsall that he has so that he can buy the one pearl.Their actions are extravagant and even excessive, and they also involve sacrifice. Tohave the one thing of great value they must, by implication, have to give up other things. To be a disciple of Christ does involve an element of sacrifice – giving up our old waysof ‘self’ and following his way of truth and love. So, the parables speak to us today byasking us to consider: what is really important: where do our priorities lie and howcentral is the life of faith to us in how we live our lives?Blessings, Revd Deirdre
