Yonkers St. Patrick’s Parade Cancellation

Dear Friends of the Yonkers St. Patrick’s

Day Parade on McLean:

It is with an abundance of caution and care

for our community, and as a result of medical advice

in the midst of this health crisis that we have made

the difficult decision to postpone the 2020 Yonkers

St Patrick's Day Parade from March 21st to Septem-

ber 19th, the halfway to St Patrick's day point.

The Mass will be celebrated on September 19th

before the parade.

Our first commitment is to the safety of both our

marchers and our spectators and we look forward to

celebrating this great parade six months from now.

We will hold the parade dinner on Saturday,

September 12th instead of this Saturday, March 14th.

This was an extremely difficult decision for us and

we ask that you look forward to September and stay

safe and well.

Sincerely,

The executive board of the Yonkers St Patrick's Day

Parade.

WAY TO GO LADIES!

A Little Goes a Long Way! As we continue the journey of Lent 2020, Week III, allow me to invite you to reflect on a simple phrase or two

from the Sacred Scriptures each day. As I have already mentioned several times, some of us set out on strenuous Lenten

disciplines which we may not always be able to complete. Like a little yeast which leavens a whole batch of dough,

allow a small part of God’s Word to touch your heart and resonate in your mind throughout the day. Perhaps begin and

end your day reading the same verse or two and look for evidence from the day’s activities of the ways in which you

experienced and lived God’s Word.

Monday, March 16 – Hosea 11:5-7

Tuesday, March 17 – Jeremiah 2:10-13

Wednesday, March 18 – Isaiah 1:2-5

Thursday, March 19 – Psalm 81:11-16

Friday, March 20 – Psalm 25:8-12

Saturday, March 21 – Sirach 17:24-26

Sunday, March 22 – Ezekiel 11:19-20

Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Campaign – Ongoing Last weekend we conducted the in pew phase of this year’s Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Campaign. We

recognize that a number of parishioners have already responded by mail and have made pledges which they will fulfill

over the next several months. Others have completed a pledge envelope and have either put it in the offertory (last week

or this week) while still others have sent their pledge in the mail.

On behalf of all those recipients of your kind generosity, may I offer you a most sincere and humble word of

gratitude. We never know how our contributions and gifts, put together with many others, will effect positively those in

need. God bless you!

Stay Tuned! There are several positions that will be opening for membership on the Parish Council. We will look for

interested parishioners to fill those roles…maybe you?

PLEASE HELP US!

Please remember that we all need to do our part to help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, which has

really taken hold throughout Westchester County. Please practice good health hygiene by washing your

hands regularly with soap or water or using an alcohol based sanitizer (if you can find any!) Sneeze or

cough into your elbow, not your hand, discard used tissues immediately.

Remember we are stressing that in place of a handshake during the sign of peace that we wave, nod, or

smile.

Reception of the Lord’s Precious Blood from common communion cups has been suspended.

It is preferred that the Lord’s Body be received in the hands rather than on the tongue at this time.

We plan to sanitize the doors and pews of the church several times a week. You may find the

church locked for this cleaning…so please be prepared and patient if you find the church closed

unexpectedly for cleaning and disinfecting. This is for everyone’s safety.

From the Pastor’s Desk 3rd Sunday of Lent: The Gift of Life-Giving Water

For a moment, try to imagine being in the sandals of the woman of Samaria. What response might we have

given to Jesus who asks for a drink? She didn’t know who he was and certainly couldn’t imagine why he, a Jew, would

be asking her, a Samaritan woman, for a drink. As the conversation goes on, Jesus tells her, “whoever drinks the water I

shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.”

Naturally, the woman asks for this water – which is not available from just any bucket dropped in just any well!

In asking the Samaritan woman for a drink, Jesus did something that was rather important. He admitted needing

her to have his thirst satisfied. This would have been uncommon and unlikely for the reasons mentioned above.

However, engaging the woman in this dialogue, Jesus opens up the conversation to her deeper thirst and desire for God.

Like the disciples in the gospel passage last Sunday, who were changed as they spent time with Jesus at the moment of

his Transfiguration, this woman, too, is changed by her experience of Jesus. Just as the disciples went down the

mountain and continued their work of evangelization and healing, encouraged by Jesus not to be afraid, so, too, this

woman goes to the people in her town and shares with them her experience of Jesus and “many of the Samaritans of that

town began to believe in him because of the word of the woman who testified…” They went to Jesus and invited him to

stay with them. After listening to Jesus for two more days, the townspeople came to believe in him because of his word,

saying to the woman, “We no longer believe because of your word; for we have heard for ourselves, and we know that

this is truly the Savior of the world.”

There is a lot for us to reflect on as we consider this passage. Maybe even too much for one sitting! But at least

let us consider the following:

What is the life-giving water that I thirst for?

If not to Jesus, to whom or to what do I go in search of it?

Who have I brought to Jesus by my testimony of faith? (See “Room for More” below.)

Like John the Baptist, this woman made a connection between others and Jesus and then “got out of the way!”

How have I led others to Jesus, whom have I led to Jesus, and how have I stepped out of the way so that their friendship

may grow and become strong?

May this Third Week of Lent be a source of many blessings for you, your loved ones, and all those you will

invite to the Lord.

Room for More… Each weekend, I am so grateful for the many parishioners who faithfully attend Mass here at Sacred Heart. I

can’t help but notice that each weekend there are also a few new faces in the assembly. How wonderful and great that

we are blessed with a good number of visitors and new residents to Yonkers. I also see that there is room for more

people at each Mass – and so I am once again asking all of us to make a very concerted, prayer-based, faith-motivated

effort to extend the invitation to others we see in our apartment buildings, in our neighborhood, in the markets, the park,

the highways and byways (as the Scriptures call them) to join us for the celebration of Holy Mass each weekend. The

Mass attendance did drop this year over last year and yet our parish remains vibrant and vital. There is always room for

more at our liturgical and sacramental celebrations.

Therefore, perhaps as a special Lenten sacrifice or offering, I invite you once again to be that special invitation

to someone who may be waiting for you to deliver it! You never know…Thank you for accepting the mission of

evangelizing and bringing others to the Lord. May we bring many souls to God!
