With the return of warmer weather, Emergency Medical Services (EMS) would like to remind parents and

caregivers of an often overlooked hazard in the home – access to open windows. Every year, paramedics respond to emergencies where a child has fallen from an open window, often from the second floor. These can be avoided by following simple safety measures. Take the time to assess potential hazards in your home before a preventable fall occurs.

WindoWs and screens• Prevent access to windows by moving furniture such as

cribs, beds, stools, and change tables out from under them;• Keep drapery cords out of childrens’ reach. Wrap excess

cord around cleats, or tie-downs to avoid a choking hazard;• Remember: screens are not safety devices. They are

designed to keep bugs out, not to keep children in.

Balconies• Do not underestimate a child’s ability to climb. Furniture

and other items stored on balconies and decks can be used to climb resulting in falls over the railing;

• Ensure that your balcony railings are not more than 10 cm (4 inch) apart. This will eliminate access between the vertical bars of a balcony, or deck.

Further prevention tips• Toddlers & preschoolers are at highest risk of falling from a

window or balcony, but it may happen at any age;• Direct supervision of children is the single most effective

way to prevent falls from windows and balconies;• Install safety devices which limit the distance in which a

window be can open to a maximum of 10cm (4 inches); • Ensure the safety device can be released quickly so the

window can be used for escape in case of emergency.

EMS is proud to be a member of the Partners Promoting Window and Balcony Safety. Take time to assess your home for window and balcony hazards and eliminate the risks before a preventable fall occurs.

As we all enjoy being outside and spending time with our family, friends and pets; we want to ensure we are creating as safe place for all our neighbours. Knowing

leash unless in a designated off-leash area.• When in designated off-leash areas, dog owners must

ensure their dog is under control, is within their sight and responds to commands.

• Parking lots adjacent to off-leash areas are on leash.• Owners are responsible for picking up all waste produced

by their dog.• Dogs are not allowed in school grounds, playgrounds,

sport fields, golf courses, cemeteries, wading and swimming areas, and other areas prohibited by signs.

• Dogs must be walked on the right hand side of the pathway on a leash that is no more than two metres in length and must not interfere with other pathway users.

Community Civic Chat

i hope that this message finds you and your family well, and enjoying the warmer weather. As you are likely aware, the Trudeau Government recently tabled legislation that would legalize marijuana. The government contends that too many young Canadians end up with criminal records for possessing small amounts of the drug.

I want to share with you some of the important aspects of the legislation and ask for your thoughts and feedback for our Opposition Caucus on how we handle this important file.

The new legislation would legalize marijuana for those over 18 and allow possession of up to 30 grams. It would also allow for individuals to grow 4 marijuana plants on their property or buy from a licensed distributor. Police would be given the power to use saliva based tests if they suspect someone is driving under the influence of the drug. The bill also prohibits marketing to youth, sales through vending machines, and clarifies laws surrounding driving under the influence of either alcohol or drugs.

There are a number of areas where the bill does not specifically spell out the Government’s approaches to handling some key practical issues when it comes to legalizing marijuana. For example, it doesn’t give us any perspective on how the government intends to tax these products nor how they will be distributed (the later will likely be left to the provinces). Our caucus has also expressed some concerns on whether the Government’s efforts to keep marijuana out of the hands of young people will be effective.

The government wants the new law to take effect July 1, 2018 which is a very aggressive timeline. Provincial and municipal governments will be responsible for policing, by-law enforcement and a number of issues that will result in significant costs.

Our official opposition caucus will continue to question the government on dealing with these unresolved issues and I would appreciate hearing your perspective. Please call my office at 403-292-6666 or email [email protected] with your thoughts and comments.

Air travel can be stressful enough even without having to squeeze all your

personal items into a carry-on bag. Here are a few simple travel essentials that will keep you feeling fresh, even during long flights, without adding bulk or clutter to your carry-on bag.

Stay fresh faced – Pack face wipes for a quick skin refresh in transit.

Put your best scent forward – Be the person that everyone is happy they got seated beside on the plane by packing a deodorant or antiperspirant.

Battle bad breath – If you aren't the type to pack a toothbrush or toothpaste in your carry-on, bring along a package of gum. This will also come in handy if your ears are known to pop on the plane.

Hand sanitizer – Bring a travel sized bottle of hand sanitizer.

Manage your mane – To avoid the classic plane travel bed head look, bring along a small hairbrush.

in-flight entertainment – With a healthy amount of distraction you may be able to maximize relaxation, reduce any anxieties and drown out louder travellers. Bring along a combination of your favourite magazines, an E-book reader and ear-phones for in-flight music or movies. ~www.newscanada.com

Hello Calgary Bow,This month with the help of volunteers I’ve been connecting with constituents on their doorsteps, gathering feedback about the community and about what matters to them. For this month’s letter I would like to outline some of the steps our government has taken to support families here in Calgary Bow and across the province.

Many of you will be aware of Bill 1: An Act to Reduce School Fees, which was the first bill introduced this spring session. As of fall 2017 no Alberta family will be required to pay for textbooks, workbooks, printing and paper costs incurred by their public schools. The removal of instructional supplies and material fees will benefit the families of nearly six hundred thousand students across Alberta. Busing fees for eligible students travelling to their designated school will also be removed. Students are eligible if they live within the boundaries of their designated schools. This includes designated French, Spanish, German schools and all other languages. Total savings for families is estimated at over $54 million.

I was pleased to learn that our very own Bowcroft Elementary was chosen to participate in phase 1 of the School Nutrition program which provides a nutritious breakfast for students before classes begin. It was an inclusive and social environment with teachers, parents and students preparing for the school day together. Our government continues its commitment to phase-in a targeted school nutrition program for elementary students from kindergarten to Grade 6 in the province. Phase 2 of this program will be implemented in the 2017/18 school year. While planning for innovation, sustainability and capacity building, selected school authorities will use the $10 million in funding to support more students with the greatest need.

Alberta’s education system has a number of delivery methods – including public and separate schools, charter schools, private schools and home education. This allows parents to select the method they feel will best ensure their child’s success. Our government understands this and remains committed to funding all school authorities.

Energy efficiency programs for homes continue to roll out through the Climate Leadership Plan with rebates for tankless hot water heaters, insulation and windows being made available in April. Residents can receive up to $6,000.00 in combined rebates when they make energy efficiency upgrades to their homes. For more information please visit www.effeciencyalberta.ca or contact my office.

I wanted to provide early notice that my 2nd annual Community Stampede Lunch will be on Sunday, July 9 from 12-2pm. This will be on the Sun Deck at WinSport again this year. Mark your calendars and confirm your attendance on my Facebook page: Deborah Drever MLA for Calgary Bow.

i hope to see you there! For more information on any of the information in this month’s newsletter please feel free to contact my office.
