STRAWBERRY RIDGE HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION

By: Sharon Hurley 315 9487

FROM THE MANAGER’S DESK

Our Annual Home Alone Thanksgiving Feast will be sponsored once again by Strawberry Ridge Home

Owners Association and Management. Dinner will be held in the Clubhouse, Thursday November 26th

at 2:00PM. The meal will be provided and we ask that you bring a dessert to share. You may pick up

your free ticket at the community office beginning November 2nd.

The Noble and the Brave: A Veteran's Day Tribute

When America had an urgent need, these brave ones raised a hand;

No hesitation held them back; they were proud to take a stand.

They left their friends and family; they gave up normal life;

To serve their country and their God, they plowed into the strife.

They fought for freedom and for peace on strange and foreign shores;

Some lost new friends; some lost their lives in long and brutal wars.

Other veterans answered a call to support the ones who fought;

Their country had requirements for the essential skills they brought.

We salute every one of them, the noble and the brave, the ones still with us here today,

And those who rest in a grave. So here’s to our country’s heroes;

They’re a cut above the rest; let’s give the honor that is due to our country’s very best.

October is now past us, as are Halloween decorations and celebrations (I hope you enjoyed the annual Halloween Party!), our annual Trash to Treasure Sale, and hopefully most of the sticky, humid Florida weather. It is now time to welcome our returning snowbirds and enjoy the autumn season.

The SRHA is sponsoring Elvis’s performance on Saturday, November 21st at 7:00 PM in the Clubhouse. Billy” Elvis” Lindsey and his brother will both be performing and it’s a great opportunity to listen to fabulous Elvis rock n’ roll music, put on dancing shoes if you wish, and have a great time with friends and neighbors. Advance tickets are $8 and availa-ble on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Homeowners Office in the Activity Center from 11AM – 1 PM. You can also call Jean DiBeneditto at 438-5166 or Rose Panella at 662-9862. You may reserve a table with the purchase of eight (8) tick-ets, Tickets at the door, if available will be $10.

And our Annual Home Alone Thanksgiving Dinner will be served at the Clubhouse on November 26th starting at 2:00 PM. We will have a traditional turkey dinner with all of the fixings cooked by our resident and retired chef, Tim Mosher. Tickets are required, but are free for residents and can be picked up at the Sales office. You are requested to bring a dessert to share. Volunteers are still needed to assist in this Thanksgiving celebration. We need prep cooking, set-up, serving, and clean-up assistance. If you can help, please contact any Board member or email, [email protected].

The Homeowner’s Association is also sponsoring, together with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, a golf cart and bicycle registration event on November 17th and 19th from 8AM – 12 noon at the Activity Center. This is a voluntary regis-tration event where deputies will record and register our golf carts and bicycles and place a registration sticker on the item. This will assist in the return of our vehicles should they be stolen and may even help in avoiding theft. There will be several deputies and support staff on these days, so just bring your bikes and carts up to the Activity Center on those days. There is no charge for registration.

RED HAT MAMMAS

By: Lorraine Pistani 657-3981

November 10, 2015, 2:00 p.m will be our next meeting. The meetings will continue to be on the second Tuesday of each month at 2:00 p.m. at the Activities Center. All ladies in Strawberry Ridge are welcome to join us. We welcomed two new members at our October meeting.

STRAWBERRY RIDGE COMPUTER & TABLET CLUB Chris Ritter 654-2940 Carol Tate 643-1015 Bill Littell 657-4766

NEXT MEETING IS THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 19th at the Activity Center. 6:00PM Tablets/7:00PM Computers

http://strawberryridgecomputerclub.blogspot.com/

Have you been thinking of buying a tablet? Why not drop in on our monthly meeting and see how others use their tablets and devices. We learn a lot from each other since we all use them differently. Even though many people have ditched their computers for tablets, that doesn’t mean we’ve abandoned them. The first half of our gathering is used for tablets and smartphones, but at 7:00PM we switch over to computers. We are here to help you.

RESIDENT TELEPHONE DIRECTORY By: Carol Tate 643-1015 [email protected]

The updates for the 2016 telephone directory have been sent to the Printers and the new books should be available for delivery to you in late December. It would be helpful if you had a clip of some type outside your door to hold the phone books, the Toppings, and other important items. If you are a new Resident and would like to be listed in the next book, please contact me with your name, address and phone number.

WOODSHOP CLUB By: Bob Burfitt 661-6895

Due to the Thanksgiving Holiday, there will be no Woodshop meeting this month. Several things to remember:

We will need a complete new slate of officers and board members for next year. Please consider serving.

Toy program is progressing but we need your help. Call me if you can spare a few hours.

Please use the shop but remember to clean up your mess!

CAUGHT BEING GOOD

Many good things occur in Strawberry Ridge every single day. Most of these acts are unrecognized and appreciated by all but the individuals involved. This is the time and place to recognize these acts! Have you caught someone doing some-thing good or helpful to another that should be acknowledged? It need not be a really big thing, just something that is wor-thy of notice and appreciation. Please call or email any Homeowners Association Board member or email [email protected] with the name of the per-son and what they have done that is special. We will acknowledge them in this space.

This month’s person who was caught doing good is Brenda Strube from Activities Lane. A neighbor of hers needed work on her landscaping which .she was unable to do. Without being asked or expecting rewards, Brenda went over and com-pleted all of the necessary yardwork making the yard look beautiful and manicured. Thanks, Brenda, for looking out for your neighbor and doing a kind act.

GOLF CART AND BICYCLE REGISTRATION EVENT November 17, 2015 and November 19, 2015

The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Department, in association with the StrawBerry Ridge Homeowners Association, is sponsoring a Golf Cart and Bicycle Registration event at the Activity Center on 11/17/2015 and 11/19/2015 from 8AM – 12 Noon. This is a voluntary, free event in which you can have your bicycle or golf cart’s serial number registered with the Sheriff’s Department and a registration sticker placed on the cart or bike. This will help getting your property returned in the event of theft and may even help deter theft. So, bring your Golf Carts and Bicycles to the Activity Center on 11/17/2015 or 11/19/2015 from 8AM - !2noon and get the free registration. There will be Sheriff’s Deputies there to assist and record.

ASSISTANCE NEEDED!!!!!

Each year here at StrawBerry Ridge, we have a free Home Alone Dinner for both Thanksgiving and Christmas for our resi-dents. This is a fabulous opportunity to share the holiday with neighbors and friends, so that no one has to be all alone on these Holidays. Many of us enjoy these dinners as we do not have family living in the area. Last year, over 230 residents enjoyed a Thanksgiving Dinner with turkey and all of the fixings. Our Clubhouse smelled deli-cious all day while the turkeys were cooking, just like Grandma or Mom’s did in our youth. For Christmas, over 125 resi-dents came together to share a delicious ham dinner. For each holiday, meals were delivered to homebound Strawberry Ridge residents. But these dinners take any hands to prepare and serve. Help is needed….. We need people to assist in preparation, serve the dinners, set-up and decorate our hall, and assist in clean-up at the end in the kitchen and in the hall. Many hands make short work, so please come to help out so we may all enjoy. Without volunteers, out dinners may be in jeopardy. If you can help in any way, please email [email protected], sign up on a list in the Clubhouse bulletin board, or call Sharon at 315-9487. Thanks you in advance for your willingness to help!

WHY?? Why does the sun lightens our hair, but darkens our skin?

Why can't women put on mascara with their mouth closed?

Why don't you ever see the headline 'Psychic Wins Lottery'?

Why is 'abbreviated' such a long word?

Why is it that doctors call what they do 'practice'?

Why isn't there mouse -flavored cat food?

BOOK REVIEW

Black Water Rising Attica Locke

Jay Porter is hardly the lawyer he set out to be. His most promising client is a low-rent call girl and he runs his fledgling law practice out of a dingy strip mall. But he's long since made peace with not living the American Dream and carefully tucked away his darkest sins: the guns, the FBI file, the trial that nearly destroyed him.

Houston, Texas, 1981. It is here that Jay believes he can make a fresh start. That is, until the night in a boat out on the bayou when he impulsively saves a woman from drowning—and opens a Pandora's box. Her secrets put Jay in danger, ensnaring him in a murder investigation that could cost him his practice, his family, and even his life…

Flesh And Blood Jonathan Kellerman

Lauren Teague is a beautiful, defiant, borderline-delinquent teenager when her parents bring her to Alex Dela-ware's office. But for all Alex's skill and effort, Lauren resists—angrily, provocatively. Reluctantly, the psy-chologist chalks Lauren up as one of the inevitable failures of a challenging profession. But years later, when Alex encounters Lauren as a stag party's featured entertainment, both doctor and patient are stricken with shame. And the ultimate horror takes place when, soon after, Lauren's brutalized corpse is found dumped in an alley. Alex disregards the advice of his trusted friend, LAPD detective Milo Sturgis, and jeopardizes his rela-tionship with longtime lover, Robin Castagna, in order to pursue Lauren's murderer.

As of this month, we now have a total of 141 paid members. It is painless to join. The cost to join is $6.00 for one year membership which breaks down to 50 cents per month. If you join for three years, the membership is $15.00 and comes to 42 cents per month. In either case, a new application must be completed. WEDNESDAY BINGO By: Jay Bledsoe [email protected]

The Strawberry Ridge Home Owners Association (SRHA,) under the direction of their appointed Chairperson, runs BINGO in the Ridge every Wednesday night (summer and some holidays excluded). 100% of the money collected at our BINGO games are used for BINGO. In fact, nearly 95% of the money collected each Wednesday night is paid right back out, the same night, to our lucky BINGO winners. The balance is held by the HOA in a separate account for the BINGO Chair to use in maintaining equipment, buying supplies, and conducting an occasional special game. BINGO is regulated by the State of Florida Charitable Gaming Laws, and is offered through our HOA. Reports are posted on the clubhouse bulletin board, after each weekly game. There is an additional summary report provided to the HOA, by the BINGO chair, monthly. There are currently fourteen (14) games played each Wednesday night. If you were to play the MINUMIM amount for all these games it would cost you less than $5.00 to play. Also, if you choose to only play the first 8 games (played on hard cards,) it could cost you as little as $1.00 to play! BINGO cards go on sale by 6PM (sometimes a bit sooner) until 6:45PM, and the game begins at 7PM! It takes us that 15 minutes to calculate the payouts for the games, based on the monies collected. Hard card games end around 8PM, there is a short intermission, and the final games (paper) end about 9PM. Instructions and costs for each game are posted at the sales table when buying your cards. If you have any questions, please ask any of our BINGO volunteers, or email our Chairperson. We are always glad to help! We welcome you to come out and play BINGO each Wednesday night!

STAY INFORMED! There are always many wonderful things going on in StrawBerry Ridge. And it’s easy to keep informed on it all. Here are a few to mention: There is a great Phone Directory that is updated every year. It contains all kinds of useful information…a listing of all the residents and their phone numbers, addresses, and email address. You will also find contact info for the Sales Office, the Homeowners Association, and a listing of all the clubs and activities along with contact info. The phone directory is free to all residents. If you don't have one, call Carol Tate at 643-1015, and she will get one to you. The StrawBerry Toppings is distributed to each home by the 1st of each month. It contains all the recent announcements and news about all the activities and the community. Do use it for reference throughout the month. If you have articles for the Toppings, you can send them to Bob Burfitt, Editor, at [email protected]. If you are having problems getting one delivered to your home, contact Amy or Fred Lumpkins at 502-5008. If you have a computer, you can check the StrawBerry Ridge Blog every day at http://strawberryridge.blogspot.com/. There are also blogs for Computer Club, Travel Club, Toppings, the Veterans Club, SR Bulletin Board, and the Homeown-er’s Association which are listed on the sidebar. You will find information for the activities, events calendar, and many more things on the blogs. Articles and pictures for the Blogs can be submitted to [email protected] or call Chris Ritter at 654-2940. If you are on Facebook, search for “StrawBerry Ridge Activities” and LIKE US to see the latest community activity and in-formation in your news feed. You can also see many StrawBerry Ridge videos on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/user/SRActivities. If you have Bright House Cable, you can watch the Community Channel on channel 95, 98- 1, or 732 depending on your TV tuner. If you don’t have cable, you can see the community channel at the top of the StrawBerry Ridge Blog on the side-bar. In addition, there are Bulletin Boards in various locations around StrawBerry Ridge and at the Hwy. 60 entrance. There is no reason to be uninformed at the Ridge!

My wife was standing nude, looking in the bedroom mirror. She was not happy with what she saw and said to me, "I feel horrible; I look old, fat and ugly. I really need you to pay me a com-pliment.' I replied, "Your eyesight's damn near perfect." And then the fight started........

MAG JONGG

By: Carolyn Hamilton, 728-6399

We have a new member to join us in our club. Welcome Janet Defelice. Mary Bergen went on a mission trip to Moroc-

co—this was not her first trip there. Not bad for a person who is 80+. She came back with many great memories and pic-

tures to share with us.

I came in first with 19 games. Second place went to Janella Moody with 11 games and third went to Sandy Pagano with

9 games. I hope everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving.

MEXICAN TRAIN DOMINOES By: Sandy Jaconetta 324-7985 and Mary Barcelona 655-1332

HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO EVERYONE! And in your blessings, please remember our military far and near. In Novem-ber the StrawBerry Ridge Mexican Train arrives every Tuesday at 12:30 PM. Welcome new players and welcome back to our “snowbirds”. This past month many exciting games were played. The ‘500’ club included Tunya Hunt, visitor Bessy Gray, and Eunice Lusk. THE GIN RUMMY CLUB By: President Don Cofrancesco 436-0882

We only have an average of 8 people show up each week— that’s right 8 in a park of 867 homes. We are still meeting every Thursday evening at 6:45 in the back room of the Activity Center (near the kitchen). It’s such a fun game and sooo easy to play you should give it a try. We only play three games and are usually home by 9 o’clock so it’s not a big invest-ment of time just a lot of fun.

THE SENILITY PRAYER :

Grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked anyway, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to tell the difference.

UPDATE ON STRAWBERRY RIDGE TURKEY DRIVE By: Barbara Phillips….681-5188

As of October 15th. I had received donations amounting to $585.00, but on October 16th. I received an additional $500.00 donation given to me by Barbara Edwards, whom we all know heads up our “Ceramics Shop, The total as of that date was now $1085.00. When I asked how she managed to donate such a large sum her answer was, it came from the Ceramics Club Sale profits generated by all the great folks who toil during the year making all the pieces sold at their yearly sales event. I can only say……..”What a wonderful bunch of people they are and a big THANK YOU to all of you and especially Barbara who has been very caring about giving back to those who need our help.” By the way, the total donations as of October 18th was $1170.00! Wow! Needless to say, I will not purchase the turkeys until around Nov. 15th , so will welcome any additional donations to help our cause. Again let me state that I will publish receipts for proof of purchase, as well as receipts showing proof of delivery to Metropolitan Ministries. I am so proud of all the great people here at “The Ridge” that every time someone stops me to donate I give them the exact, up to the minute, dollar amount collected so far. Many, many thanks to all who have partici-pated……you folks are super.

STRAWBERRY SINGERS

By Sylvia Haywood 436-0387 It is just great to see some of our "old" members returning to the Singers this year! We are all working very hard and I think you will be very happy with our Christmas Concert this year. Even though most of the songs are tried and true old-ies, they are certainly goldies and we have put a new twist on some of them that will really put you and the chorus in a true Christmas mood! Don't forget to put Saturday, December 12, 2015 at 7:00 PM on your calendar now so you don't forget to come to the Clubhouse that night to help us welcome the Spirit of Christmas to Strawberry Ridge! See you there! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving too!
