Teacher Directions: 1. Prior to class beginning, cut up each set of the 7 sets timelines and place into an envelope with the title on it (pages 2-10): a. American Airlines Flight 11 b. United Airlines Flight 175 c. American Airlines Flight 77 d. United Airlines Flight 93 e. President Bush f. The World Trade Center Towers g. The Pentagon 2. Begin class with the PowerPoint warm up. 3. Divide your class into 7 heterogeneous groups and give each group one of the envelopes. 4. Allow 10 minutes for each group to read through and place their events in order. 5. Begin the PowerPoint and have each group read what happened when the appropriate time comes up. Each time you click, the next time will appear. (Note: You can also use the included videos at the appropriate times. I did not embed them in the PowerPoint as I think they sometimes break up the flow of the discussion) 6. Pages 11-16 include each group’s events in order for you to follow along and lead the discussion. 7. Hold a class discussion about how chaotic and frightening the day was with how quickly all the events occurred. Allow students to ask questions and express their feelings. 8. Introduce the Interview Assignment (p. 17) and after having gone through the day, have students develop their own interview questions in addition to the ones included. 9. Assign the interview and allow students an appropriate amount of time to conduct them and share what they learned with their groups and the class. (I usually allow a week to ensure that everyone had enough time to find someone to interview.)

stabbed. They said they have a bomb. Passengers are throwing up and getting sick. The plane is

making jerky movements. I think they intend to go to Chicago or someplace and fly into a

building. Don't worry, Dad. If it happens, it'll be very fast....Oh my God...”

9:03 a.m.

bag is screened for explosives but he is not stopped.

8:42 a.m.

Flight 93 departs 42 minutes late due to runway congestion at Newark Airport en route to San Francisco. The

plane is carrying 37 passengers, two pilots and five flight attendants.

9:23 a.m.

Flight 93 receives a warning from flight dispatch, “Beware any cockpit intrusion - two aircraft hit World Trade

Center.”

9:28 a.m.

United Airlines Flight 93 is hijacked. A crew member in the cockpit began shouting, “Mayday! Mayday!

Mayday!” over the radio amidst sounds of violence. Thirty-five seconds after the first Mayday call, the crew,

someone in the cockpit shouted, “Mayday! Get out of here! Get out of here!”

9:32 a.m.

A hijacker transmits a message to what he believes to be only the passengers, but is overheard by air traffic

control: “Ladies and gentlemen, here the captain, please sit down, keep remaining sitting. We have a bomb on

board. So sit.”

9:33 a.m.

Tom Burnett calls to his wife and says that a passenger was stabbed but he believed the bomb threat was fake

to control the passengers. His wife informs him of the attacks on the World Trade Center and he replies that the

hijackers were “talking about crashing this plane ... it’s a suicide mission.” He ended his call by saying, “Don't

worry, we're going to do something.”

the hijackers.

9:55 a.m.

Passenger Elizabeth Wainio calls her stepmother and concludes, four and a half minutes later, by saying, "I

have to go. Everyone is running up to first class. They're breaking into the cockpit. I love you.”

10:00 a.m.

In the cockpit, a hijacker says “They want to get in here. Hold, hold from the inside.” The cockpit voice

recorder captured the sounds of crashing, screaming, and shattering of glass. A hijacker asks, “Is that it? Shall

we finish it off?” Another hijacker responds, “No. Not yet. When they all come, we finish...” The hijacker at the

controls pitches the airplane up and down. A passenger in the background cries, “In the cockpit. If we don't,

we'll die!”

10:02 a.m.

A passenger yells, "Roll it!” and the passengers continue their assault while a hijacker says, "Pull it down! Pull

it down!” The plane rolls onto its back, and one of the hijackers began shouting the takbir. Amidst the sounds of

the passenger counterattack, the aircraft plowed into an empty field in Stonycreek, Pennsylvania about 20

minutes' flying time from Washington, D.C.

President Bush begins his early morning run in Sarasota, Florida with several of his staffers.

8:56 a.m.

As part of a scheduled visit to promote his education policy, President George W. Bush enters a classroom at

Emma E. Booker Elementary School in Sarasota, Florida. Bush is aware that a commercial airliner has struck

the North Tower of the World Trade Center, but continues his scheduled visit.

9:05 a.m.

As President Bush begins to read with the students at Booker Elementary, Chief of Staff Andrew Card

interrupts to whisper to him, “A second plane hit the second tower, America is under attack.” President Bush

continues the lesson for another five to seven minutes, rather than alarm the students.

9:15 a.m.

President Bush leaves the classroom at Booker Elementary School and is brought to a secure room where he is

briefed by staff and watches television coverage of the tragedy unfolding in New York City.

9:30 a.m.

President Bush makes his first public statements about the tragedy to teachers and students at the elementary

school. He tells them "we've had a national tragedy" and that he will be returning to Washington, D.C.

immediately. He then leads a moment of silence.

11:45 a.m.

President Bush makes a brief statement from Barksdale Air Force Base in Shreveport, La., saying that “freedom

itself was attacked this morning by a faceless coward and freedom will be defended." He adds, "The United

States will hunt down and punish those responsible for these cowardly acts.”

Flight 11 crashes at roughly 466 mph into the north face of the North Tower of the World Trade

Center, between floors 93 and 99.

8:49 a.m.

An announcement over the public-address system in the South Tower states that the incident

has occurred in the other building and advises tenants that their building is safe and they should

return to their offices or floors. Some don't hear the announcement, others ignore it and

evacuate anyway, while others congregate in common areas like the 78th floor sky lobby.

9:02 a.m.

Flight 175 crashes at about 590 mph into the south face of the South Tower of the World Trade

Center, between floors 77 and 85.

9:11 a.m.

Over the next 45 minutes, at least 200 people, primarily in the North Tower, trapped by fire and

smoke in the upper floors, jump to their deaths

9:32 a.m.

NYPD calls in all off-duty police officers while the NYFD issues a department-wide recall,

which orders all off-duty fire-fighters back to work.

9:59 a.m.

After burning for approximately 56 minutes from the impact of Flight 175, the South Tower of

the World Trade Center collapses in 10 seconds, covering lower Manhattan in a gray-white

cloud of dust and debris.

10:01 a.m.

Moments after the South Tower fell, Chief J. Pfeifer (inside of North Tower) says on the radio

to all firemen, at least twice, “Evacuate the building.”

10:21 a.m.

NYPD Inspector Terri Tobin was buried in the rubble with a glass pane lodged in her back and

cinder block cut on her skull. She rose from the debris and rescued injured people who were in a

panic. She clung mightily to one severely injured man's arm and said: “I'm with the NYPD. I'm

not gonna let go.”

10:28 a.m.

As if being split down the center, the North Tower of the World Trade Center collapses from

the top down. This second collapse is also viewed live on television and heard on radio.

10:33 a.m.

Lieutenant Mickey Kross of the NYFD is in stairwell B on the fourth floor of the north tower

when it collapses, but still leads 14 people, mostly firefighters, to safety.

1:32 p.m.

Pasquale Buzzelli, a structural engineer for the Port Authority wakes up on a pile of rubble of

the North Tower. He was descending down from the 64th floor and got to the 22nd floor when

the tower collapsed. He was knocked unconscious for three hours, and awoke on a hill of

rubble, looking at the sky.
