CDAS CAMPBELL DIVERSITY AWARENESS SURVEY

“The major factor in creating harmonious diversity

is awareness of bias.”

Following are several pictures of diverse groups of people. For each group, please indicate how comfortable you would be interacting with them in various ways, for example, working with them, going to a party with them, or having them as teachers for your children. Do not focus on the specific individuals in each group; instead consider each group as a whole in making your decision. Where age is a factor, assume you are roughly the same age as the people in the picture. For each group in each situation, use the following scale of responses:

= 1 - Very Uncomfortable = 2 - Uncomfortable

= 3 - Comfortable = 4 - Very Comfortable

This survey is for your self-education; it will be most useful if you give your first reaction, quickly and honestly. You may be asked to share what you have learned about yourself with others in small groups. In doing this, share your reactions as honestly as possible, but only as much as you feel comfortable with. Protect your own ego and your self-image.

“In a world of harmonious diversity, people from different groups will be

less apt to go to war with each other.”

These pictures came mainly from the author’s extensive collection of old postcards, showing groups of interesting people. The author would welcome other additions to his postcard collection.

Summary: Your ReactionsSummary: Your Reactions

The major purpose of this exercise is to encourage you to assess your reactions to groups of people different from you.

Thinking about characteristics such as age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, education, occupation, physical appearance, country, dress, social status, and other personal characteristics:

Which characteristics do you find most desirable, and why?

Which characteristics do you find most troublesome, and why?

Which groups are you most attracted to, and why?

Which groups are you least attracted to, and why?

As a result of these “Diversity” exercises, are you more aware of your reactions to diverse groups?

_____ Yes. If yes, how have they changed?

_____ Maybe. Please explain.

_____ Not really. Comments?

Please write a short summary of what you have learned about your reactions to people who are different from you. Please plan to share this with a discussion group, as appropriate.

During the remainder of this conference, talk with other attendees about their reactions. The group pictures can be wonderful “conversation starters.” You might ask a colleague, “What was your reaction to (a specific group)?”

The purpose is to gain a better understanding about how those around you feel about diversity.
