The Student Code of Conduct for Julie Payette Public School is designed to provide aframework to ensure that our school is a safe, productive learning environment for all. TheCode of Conduct establishes the level of behaviour expected for all, so that we have the bestpossible school where success and achievement are reached through cooperation, courtesyand respect. We ask families to review this Code of Conduct so that all parties are familiar withschool expectations and procedures. We strive to embed Character Education into ourclassrooms and practise Progressive Discipline on a daily basis.

Respect, Responsibility, Teamwork, Perseverance, Kindness,Honesty, Courage, Empathy, Optimism, Integrity

As our students embark on a voyage of discovery where the destination is unknown, they willlearn about themselves and about the world we live in. We, as a community, are committed toensure that every student has the opportunity to achieve his/her highest academic, social, andemotional potential. As a school community, teachers and parents have an on-goingresponsibility to prepare students for their role as citizens of the world by working together as ateam, sharing ideas, successes and challenges.

Student Responsibilities

Students are to be treated with respect and dignity. In return, they must demonstrate respect forthemselves, for others, and for the responsibilities of citizenship through acceptable behaviour.

Respect and responsibility are demonstrated when a student:  comes to school prepared, on time and ready to learn;

shows respect for themselves, others and for those in authority;

refrains from bringing anything to school that may compromise the safety of others;

follows the established rules and takes responsibility for his or her own actions.

We believe that students can learn to manage their own behaviour. All of us make mistakes and

mistakes are an opportunity to learn. Staff members will offer guidance as students learn tomeet their needs in appropriate ways. Teachers and support staff play a critical role by modelingrespect and showing support for the above expectations.

It is the duty of parents to ensure that their children are regular andpunctual in their attendance at school. Students who arrive at schoollate must report to the office prior to going to their classroom. Pleaseencourage good habits early by ensuring that children are absent

only when it is absolutely necessary. Students should be drop off on time so that they have theopportunity to walk around the school and line up for prompt entry. All students should arrive atschool between 7:50-8:00 in the morning and before 11:50 in the afternoon. Serious attendance problems will be referred to the attendance counselor.

The Safe Arrival Program has been established to ensure that all of ourstudents are either safely at home (with a parent/guardian), or safely at school.Parents are requested to contact the school at 905-668-2225 if their childis going to be absent or late. All attempts to contact parents will be madewhen an unexplained student absence occurs. If no indication is given that achild is to be absent, we will telephone the home, the workplace, or the

emergency contact person named in order to determine the child’s whereabouts. It is theparent/guardian’s responsibility to provide the school with complete and currentinformation to enable us to make any necessary contacts. Should we be unable todetermine the whereabouts of a child, the police will be contacted. For appointments, be sure tosend a note beforehand to your child’s teacher. All late arrivals MUST report to the office for anAdmittance Slip before they proceed to their classroom. Students who have multiple unexcusedlates will be required to make up the time after school.

Students not participating in class excursions or school events are expected to attend school onthat day. Assignments will be left by the homeroom teacher and the student will be allowed towork in another classroom for the duration of the trip. If the student is not participating and willnot be attending school, a note is required from the parent.

When it is necessary to pick up your child for an appointment during school hours,please follow this procedure:

Send a note of explanation beforehand to your child’s teacher.

When it is time to pick up your child, come to the SCHOOL OFFICE.Please do not go directly to your child’s classroom.

Your child will be waiting at the office or the secretary will call yourchild for you.

Be sure to sign out your child in the record book with the secretarybefore leaving.

When a student is absent, it is their responsibility to catch up onmissed work.

Students are expected to bring litterless lunches and snacks to help reduce the amount ofgarbage collected. The school strongly encourages the use of Boomerang Lunches. Aboomerang lunch means that everything a child brings to school for lunch returns home with thechild each day, including any garbage produced by the student. The school is not provided withgreen boxes for composting so any organic waste must go home with the student. Studentsmust not bring glass bottles to school.

During inclement weather, a double bell will ring and the students will be admitted early orremain inside at recess and during the lunch hour. However, parents must ensure that theirchild is properly dressed for current or forecasted weather conditions.

During indoor recesses, quiet activities will be encouraged (e.g., board games, puzzles,crosswords, etc.). Students not following the lunch room expectations may lose their privilegeto eat in their classroom for lunch. A note from the parent is required when students leavethe school premises at lunch. Students who leave for lunch are expected to return to schoolat 11:50 during inclement weather.

Allergy Alert

The Julie Payette P.S. community supports the philosophy of inclusion andwill endeavour to create a safe school environment for all staff and students.As such, we require your assistance and cooperation to make our school an“Allergy Alert School”. Due to life threatening allergies for some students,

we ask that no peanut or nut (cashew, pecan, walnut, hazelnut, almond)products or byproducts be brought to school. This includes productsmarked, “may contain traces of nuts” or “manufactured in a facility that also produces nutproducts”, and that any caregiver who may prepare your child’s lunch be advised of our “NutAlert” status. Thank you for your continued cooperation in promoting the safety and security ofour school.

In accordance with the Durham District School Board guidelines, WOWbutter, a peanut butterreplacement product, is not permitted within our school. Please ensure that your child doesn’tbring this product in his/her lunches.

Care of School Property

The facilities (desks, lockers, etc.), texts, books, and equipment in the school are supplied bythe Durham District School Board for the use of staff and students. Although the use ofequipment is given without charge to the individual, this equipment is not the property of thestudent. Books and equipment have a certain life expectancy. It is the policy of the school and

the Board that if a book or piece of equipment issued to a student for his/her use is lost orwillfully damaged, that book or piece of equipment must be replaced at a price determined bythe school.

Lockers

Intermediate students will be provided with lockers and are expected to keep them locked.Lockers are at all times property of the Board and are to be used to store school relatedmaterials and authorized personal items such as outer garments, footwear, lunch, etc. Studentsare solely responsible for the contents of their lockers. Administration has the authority withreasonable suspicion, to search personal property and lockers. Students and parents areexpected to read and sign a locker agreement before lockers are assigned. Intermediatestudents may use lockers at entry, recess and lunch times only.

Electronic Devices

Personal electronic devices that are used inappropriately inside of schoolsduring the normal school day are disruptive to the teaching and learningenvironment. The privacy and personal dignity of others could be violated bythe inappropriate use of personal electronic devices to text message, socialnetwork, and/or share digital media. In addition, communication throughpersonal electronic devices during class time interferes with teaching andlearning. An exception to this occurs when the teacher has approved theuse of specific technology for purposeful instruction.

Unless deemed appropriate by the school administration for educational purposes, it is thepractice of the Durham District School Board that the use of personal electronic devicesis prohibited during the school day on school property. Personal electronic devices maybe utilized off school property or in designated areas and during times assigned by the school.The Durham District School Board cannot assume the liability for stolen personal electronicdevices.

Yard Supervision

Yard supervision begins at 7:50 a.m., students should not be arriving on school property beforesupervisors are on duty. During inclement weather, a double bell will ring and the students willbe admitted early or remain inside at recess and during the lunch hour. However, parents mustensure that their child is properly dressed for current or forecasted weather conditions. When

outside, students must play in their designated area and remain visible to the supervisor in theschoolyard. Students must gain permission from a supervisor before entering the school for anyreason during recess. Students must not leave school grounds without the writtenpermission of a parent/guardian.

KISS and RIDE!

Bikes, Skateboards, Scooters, etc.

Students may ride bicycles, skateboards and scooters to school. Once on school property, theymust walk their bikes to the racks and carry their scooters and skateboards until the bell rings.Bicycles must be securely locked in the bicycle rack when not in use. According to the TrafficAct, all students MUST wear a helmet. It is a parent’s responsibility to ensure the use of

protective head gear (approved helmet). As with other valuable personal possessions, theschool does not assume responsibility for damage or theft. Roller blades and roller shoes arenot permitted on school property.

Dogs

The presence of dogs on the school grounds represents a safety issue. Werealize that for the most part these pets are playful and harmless. However,the reality is that their mere presence strikes fear in many children. Pleasehelp us to maintain a safe school environment, and refrain from bringing yourdog to school.

Pets

As a general rule, pets are not allowed in the school building. This practice is beingimplemented for safety reasons as a number of students have allergies to various animals andbecause even the tamest pet may react unexpectedly when surrounded by curious children orwhen inadvertently startled. Pets also disrupt regular routines. Arrangements can be made forclass visits. Thank you for your understanding.

Kiss & Ride Program

The primary purpose of Kiss-and-Ride is toensure the safety of our students. It also providesan efficient and quick system for our students toarrive at and to leave school. At pick-up times, parents may need to drive through the semi-

circle more than once before the child(ren) is (are) ready for pick-up. This method reducessome of the parking hazards and congestion. We believe in “safety over convenience”. Parentsare also asked to use caution and low speed when entering the traffic flow route, remain in theircar when dropping off students and turn right when exiting school property. Please check theschool website to view the colour-coded traffic flow chart.

School Lock Down & Fire Drills

The safety of staff and students is of paramount importance. In the event of a police emergencyin the community or an intruder in the school, staff will follow the procedures for modified or fulllockdown. These procedures will be rehearsed periodically through whole-school drills. Allschools are required by law to have 6 fire drills throughout the school year (3 in the fall, 3 in thespring). The drills are for the protection of the children; therefore, every drill must be seen as areal emergency situation.

Emergency Evacuation Procedure

The immediate evacuation of the school building would mean that there is a need for students toleave the school before regular dismissal time. A case of fire, broken water pipes or danger of an explosion would necessitate this action. Our evacuation centre has been established asAnderson C.V.I. if it is determined that our school yard is unsafe for students.

Indoor & Outdoor Shoes

Children are asked to remove their outdoor shoes/boots before entering their classrooms.Students should have a pair of indoor shoes which can also be worn for physical education,providing they are non-marking.

Use of School Phone Occasionally it may be necessary for a student to make use of the school phone. Permissionmust be obtained from a staff member and a valid reason must be given. A request to use thephone to make arrangements for visiting friends after school or at lunch time is not avalid reason.
