was plek-plek meer as ’n meter hoog sigbaar.

Andre Coetzee.

Hierdie aspek is nie deur die Thaba Chweu m u n i s i p a l i t e i t a a n d i e m e n s e gekommunikeer nie, en is nie in die Highlands Panorama bekend gemaak of

OLD GRUMPYDifferences

WE live in a society comprised of peoples of different origins, language, culture, religion, politics and so on. Here in South Africa, we have vastly different perspectives on government, democracy, chieftainship, forefathers, marriage and the upbringing of children. It is far more complicated than East meets West. Sure, we have conservative European culture, conservative African culture, Communist revolutionary thinking, liberalism and the influence of the East via India, China and other nations. This dictates how we view medicine,

church, politics and community. It defines who we are. We have 11 official languages, plus a myriad of others not even listed. We cannot wish those differences away. They will always be there. It is ingrained and genetically programmed in us. It will become more complicated still. Trying to undo it is an exercise in futility. However, we have one national South African border, most of us were born here and many others traveled here for a better life. These facts are given and we must find a way to co-exist. Creating little homelands and enclaves for like-thinking groups is simply unpractical and can not work if we want to prosper. We do trade with each other and we have friends across the above mentioned divides. Having English friends does not make me a traitor to my own people. So how do we make this work? This is the Holy Grail for politicians, as they all purport to have the answer. And they never get it

right. In my opinion we are looking for answers in the wrong places. To exist as diverse communities we need to look at the simple things. What do we actually share? What do we want? Things like good health, a better life and education for our children, religious beliefs (although they may differ, we mostly believe in Deity), doing business with each other, a stable and peaceful community, a clean environment, respect and the list goes on. And those my friends, are the keys to a prosperous future. To harmony. You do not need to forsake your upbringing, culture and God. Hold on to it, but look for something more. It really is that simple. Let us cherish and celebrate our own cultures, but let us concentrate on a change in attitude. Let us talk about and engage each other in those things that matter in our day to day lives. The good things. The things that we want. The positive things that we share and that communities need. You build from a foundation, and tolerance and basic human decency are key concepts in our foundation. Take small steps and we will get there!

Ek lag so lekker dat die ‘kapings’ my toe ontstel. Want ons leef allermins in ’n kokon in Lydenburg. Want diefstaf, moorde en huisbrake was hier al baie.

‘Anoniem’ het jy ‘n naam of is jy skaam?

Madiba is sterk voorbeeldMnr.

’n BAIE skaars ou bundel getiteld “Motoring Encyclopedia” is by ons beskikbaar. Daar is fotos, tegniese

’n “What you see, is what you get” – persoon. Stefan Steyn lewer ’n solo-orreluitvoering by

die NG Moedergemeente

Lydenburg.Dit vind Saterdag 13 Julie om 15:30 plaas.

Die prys vir volwassenes is R30 en pensionarisse

is R15. Almal is welkom.

VOLGENS Isobel Janse van Rensburg, voorsitter van die KANSA Lydenburg tak, word die Relay for Life vir 'n rede deurnag aangebied.Die Relay for Life begin gewoonlik net na sonsondergang.

Net so voel kankerlyers ook.

EVERYBODY's heard of the SA Car of the Year competition; not so many about the the annual Bike of the Year, (BOTY) but it's just as intense and a lot more fun for participants, writes DAVE FALL.

The Pirelli South African Bike of the Year Competition is an initiative by one of South Africa’s dedicated motorcycling portals, TheBikeShow.co.za (which also has a slot on Ignition TV).

The winner will be announced later in July, so check back with Wheels24 to find out which bike will claim the 2013 crown.

AFTER over eight million kilometers of test drives, and an investment of €25 million in the two German van plants in Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde, the first new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has now rolled off the assembly line in Düsseldorf. As a result, Mercedes-Benz Vans is writing a new chapter in the Sprinter success story and once again setting benchmarks for the van sector. The new Sprinter features five new safety and assistance systems, including three van premieres. It is the first van to have engines that meet the future Euro VI emissions standard, and its incredible fuel consumption values (as low as 6.3 liters per 100 km) make it by far the best vehicle in its class when it comes to fuel efficiency. In the large vans segment, the Sprinter also impresses with its striking appearance.Nicolette Lambrechts, Brand Manager for Vans at Mercedes-Benz South Africa (MBSA) says: “We are indeed all excited in the Daimler AG network with the production of the Sprinter. There was a lot of hard work and planning globally that has now seen the assembly kick-off.”Lambrechts elaborates that new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Euro 4 and 5 engines will be launched to the South African market at the Johannesburg International Motor Show in October. “We are confident that the indomitable Sprinter will continue to cement its market leadership position in the large vans segment. It is a fantastic product that enjoys good support in the market. We are however not immediately able to launch the Euro 6 engine due to inadequate availability of cleaner fuels. ” A festive ceremony was held to mark the launch of series production at the Düsseldorf plant. At the celebration, the first new Sprinter was unveiled to numerous employees by Volker Mornhinweg, Head of Mercedes-Benz Vans among others. At the start of series production, Volker Mornhinweg said, “The new Mercedes-Benz Sprinter has once again enabled us to set the bar higher for the van sector. The new Sprinter's safety, efficiency, and quality are unmatched by any other van, and the vehicle remains a pioneer in the large van segment. The new Sprinter is the global vehicle in the commercial vehicle sector. The start of series production has really gotten the ball rolling, and I'm delighted to work together with all of you to continue the Sprinter success story.”At the ceremony, Plant Director Martin Kelterer added, “Today is a very special day for our Düsseldorf van plant. We are of course extremely happy about the new Sprinter. All of the employees at the plant worked extremely hard to make this day happen and to prepare themselves for the new production processes. This shows that we have a highly motivated and qualified team whose members are extremely committed to their work.

New Mercedes Benz Sprinter Bus and Van

Ever since the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter made its debut in 1995, the van has made a name for itself all over the world. The vehicle has always been a pioneer when it comes to assistance and safety systems. In 1995 Mercedes-Benz became the first brand to install the anti-lock braking system (ABS) into a van by introducing it into the Sprinter. Another van first, the Electronic Stability Program (ESP) , fo l lowed in 2002. Mercedes-Benz Vans achieved another pioneering feat in 2006 when it developed ESP into ADAPTIVE ESP. All of these developments have made the Sprinter a top seller. Over the past 18 years, the vehicle has posted total sales of about 2.5 million units and helped customers perform a wide variety of tasks. The Sprinter is a truly global vehicle and a key pillar of the “Vans goes global” growth strategy of Mercedes-Benz Vans.Today the pioneering van is being sold in thousands of variants in around 130 countries. In South Africa, the Sprinter enjoys a lot of support in the segments it plays in which include, taxis, ambulances and freight operations amongst many. By email

A FEW months ago Car reported on the reintroduction of the Datsun brand. Parent company Nissan has now added the rejuvenated Datsun brand to its stable as an entry-level offering.

Growth in the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa) nations has led Nissan to create (relaunch) this third brand as an offering to the growing middle class in these countries.

“Datsun will bring competitive products and services, modern and aspirational, while at the same time reassuring, providing superior value and specifically developed for the emerging and ambitious new Middle Class in high-growth markets. The Datsun cars will be locally developed with the support of Nissan Motor Company engineers and stylists and will be locally produced”, said Vincent Cobee, Head of Datsun.

A few weeks ago Car attended a number of workshops where motoring media from the target markets were given further insight to the relaunch of the brand. During their time at Nissan’s headquarters and global design centre in Yokohama Japan, they were shown designs of the very first new-generation Datsun. These were embargoed until now and CAR is one of the first media outlets in the world to bring you these images.

A full scale model will be debuted at its world premiere will take place on 15 July in New Delhi, India and the new car will go on sale early next year. Expect the new, as yet unnamed model, to be roughly the size of a Toyota Etios. Power will most likely come from a small inline four cylinder motor that will drive the front wheels.

As India is the only other right hand drive market for Datsun we can expect the same model that will be produced on the Sub-Continent to go on sale locally at the end of 2014.

The company also launched its international website www.datsun.com on July 1. Brand and product information will be available after 15 July.

SAC’s Stephen Fischer started the journey in 1983 as a one man tuning operation specialising in Alfa Romeo products. Today there are no fewer than nine Steve’s Auto Clinic (SAC) workshops around the country that specialise in cars and bakkies. SAC also has a central warehouse and five SAC truck parts outlets. Even the two-wheels are covered with the SAC Bike division that focuses mainly on Harley-Davidsons.

According to Fischer the world is a different place thirty years on and he can still remember working on cars with points and condensers. Times have moved on and so did SAC. The main reason why SAC is so successful is service delivery to their clients. To quote Fisher: “At the very top of our list of products on offer is extraordinary service. It’s a very rare product in the automotive aftermarket performance enhancement and service industry”.

OPEL Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition on its way to SA. General Motors South Africa (GMSA) announced that the Opel Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition will be making its South African debut this October. Available in limited numbers, the Nürburgring Edition will not only be a rare sight on local roads but as part of an international limited edition production run, the Opel Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition is one of the most exclusive Opels ever built.

Opel's ties to the Nürburgring Nordschleife date back to the 1960s and the track is probably the most gruelling and demanding in the world. Despite that all Opel vehicles are tested at the Nürburgring before entering production, OPC variants receive extra-special fine tuning of chassis, performance and handling dynamics to ensure they perform at the top of their respective classes. Nicknamed the 'green hell' by Sir Jackie Stewart, OPC vehicles are amongst the fastest around the circuit – the previous generation Opel Astra OPC and original Zafira OPC both having achieved records in their segments at the track.

The hottest Corsa ever – and not just in the looks department is the new Opel Corsa OPC Nürburgring Edition. It features a host of visual and performance upgrades to push the envelope even further.

Visual changes include the addition of a front lip spoiler, a new rear roof-mounted spoiler, dual exhaust pipes and dark-painted 18-inch alloy wheels. The latter play host to brand-new high-performance Brembo disc brakes. Interior changes include Recaro sports seats in Nappa leather, while

Corsa OPC in limited numbers

e q u i p m e n t upgrades include r a i n - s e n s i n g wipers, automatic climate control and an upgraded audio system with U S B a n d B l u e t o o t h compatibility.

The chassis has undergone further d e v e l o p m e n t , enhanced for

better performance by Bilstein. The turbocharged 1.6-litre petrol engine has been tweaked as well, now producing a maximum of 154 kW at 5 850 rpm and 250 Nm of torque from 2 250 rpm – and as much as 280 Nm on overboost. The Corsa also features a new mechanical multi-plate limited slip differential on the front axle, to ensure the torque is translated into speed with a minimum of fuss.

The new Corsa dispatches the 0-100 km/h dash in just 6.8 seconds, running on to a top speed of 230 km/h. Performance notwithstanding, the Nürburgring Edition's ECOTEC engine still produces sound efficiency figures – its combined cycle average is just 7.6-litres per 100 km and carbon emissions are 178 g/km.

With Opel's heritage in South Africa beginning as far back as 1930, Opel is a key brand within the GMSA portfolio, the new Corsa Nürburgring Edition following hot on the heels of the brand new Opel Astra OPC which was launched earlier this year. The new Corsa boosts the product line-up as a halo model, its exclusivity set to evoke the passion and enthusiasm South Africans have for the Opel brand even further.

HINO, the only Japanese truck manufacturer to take on the challenge of the gruelling annual Dakar Rally, is involved with an accelerated performance enhancement programme for its two four-wheel drive 500-Series trucks which will take part in the 2014 event in South America. The very experienced Team Sugawara will once again be responsible for the Hino entries in the race which has seen them score numerous category wins (engines under 10-litres) while building up an amazing and unequalled record of 23 consecutive finishes.

The 2014 Dakar Rally will start in Rosario, Argentina, on January 5 and finish in Valparaiso, a Chilean resort town on January 18. The motorcycles and quads will have a two-day detour through Bolivia while the cars and trucks traverse the Andes Mountains.

Next year marks the culmination of Hino's three-year plan to get into the leading overall rankings and many changes are being made to the trucks to further improve performance. This will include more powerful engines and refined braking and suspension systems. The modifications are being carried out at Hino Engineering's factory, which specialises in customising production trucks to meet specific customer requirements.

Yoshimasa Sugawara and his second son Teruhito will again drive the team's trucks. The father, who is now 72, will be entering his 23rd Dakar Rally, while his son, who scored his fifth consecutive win in the under 10-litre category last year, will drive the team's lead truck. His father's Hino will be a virtual test bed for performance-enhancing new technologies and components not tried in previous races. The same co-drivers will be used as for the 2013 rally, namely Hiroyuki Sugiura paired with Teruhito and Katsumi Hamura with Yoshimasa, who is also the team's director.

The team will have the opportunity of testing all the latest changes when it competes in the Mongolia Rally next month. There will then be enough time for fine-tuning before the trucks are shipped to Argentina. Next year the team will also have a new support truck in the form of a Hino 700 Series ZS model which is popular on construction sites and in mining operations in countries outside Japan.

Some of the support team technicians will again be selected from Hino dealerships in Japan, which has proved a very effective motivational programme for the dealers as their technicians strive to go on this prestigious event with Hino Team Sugawara. By email

Millennial buyers are looking for homes with an integration

of technology designed to allow the homeowner to

control the home at a distance via a broadband connection.

There is no doubt that today's Generation Y home buyer are not like their older counterparts, says Adrian Goslett, chief executive officer of RE/MAX of Southern Africa. He explains that in today's market, Generation Y buyers or those under the age of 30 are tech savvy and always on the go, and so when it comes to buying a home, they have different expectations and wants when compared to older buyers in the market. These millennial buyers are often at different life stages to their predecessors with many still unmarried and without children and this changes their needs and what they are looking for in a property he points out.Green featuresHomes with energy-saving eco features such as solar panels and gas appliances are high on the list of essentials for today's younger buyers, who are looking to reduce their carbon footprint, while saving on utility costs.Ready to move inGoslett says that while many of the older generation buyers may have been looking for a well-priced, fixer-upper property that they could renovate themselves, Generation Y buyers prefer homes that have already been renovated.

What Generation Y home buyers want

While in the past this was reserved for the more affluent home buyers, advancement in technology and devices that use Wi-Fi or other wireless connections has made this home feature increasingly more accessible.“With the right installations, homeowners can control aspects of their home through applications on their smart phones or tablets.”These are the kind of things that younger buyers have in mind when searching for their ideal

home, says Goslett.“Each generation makes buying decisions based on the trends and technology that is available to them, and the current generation has the world's cutting-edge technology at their fingertips.”Even though many of the younger generation buyers do not have a family right now, they are still looking for properties with an extra bedroom or space that they can customise to suit lifestyle changes. While Generation Y buyers want an extra bedroom or flexible space,

t h a t d o e s n ' t necessarily mean they want bigger homes.A c c o r d i n g t o Goslett, homes with s m a l l e r l i v i n g s p a c e s h a v e become popular because they are m u c h m o r e manageable for younger buyers and more efficient.www.property24.co

Different yet Tougher Route. Now in its 30th year, the Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique, to be held in the beautiful Mpumalanga Lowveld on 20 July 2013 can be compared to the Comrades Marathon in that it is a true test of skill, strength and endurance. The three stage, 151 km Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique is the biggest and toughest winter road event in the country and attracts over 1 300 riders annually.According to Wynand de Villiers, the Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique organiser, the 43km first stage will start from the Mbombela Stadium near Nelspruit at 06:30 and involves 20km of hard pedalling on gradients of between two and six per cent. “Riders’ pedal power will be tested at the extremely challenging Heidel Eggs climb, which is two kilometres long. It may be shorter than Hilltop but it's more or less the same ascent,” says de Villiers.De Villiers also states that, even though the route is different this year, the thrill of the race is still the same. “Any person who completes this race can be proud of their achievement. There will be no Boulders this year, but the nature of the riding terrain in the Lowveld is such that no cycling event is going to be easy; the road either goes up or down. So this year's Jock will be as tough, if not tougher than previous years,” adds de Villiers.Among the participants this year will be the Bestmed professional riders and their social teams. Team Bestmed comprises riders that range in age from 20 to 68 from a variety of occupational backgrounds, proving that almost anyone can ride. The full team will be participating in this year's Bestmed Jock Cycle Classique and each of the riders is looking forward to the challenges that the race has to offer. “Bestmed's professional team's leader – An-Li Kachelhoffer, has done extremely well this year. She won the Bestmed Tour de Boland race earlier this year and we trust that she will give her all in this race to show women that this sport is for everyone. We wish all our riders luck and encourage the nation to be active, safe, nutri-wise and ultimately happy”Race Details:The 43km first stage starts from the Mbombela Stadium near Nelspruit at 06:30.At 09:00, the 45km second stage begins when the riders head out in

he Winterveld Rugby Club, better known as the Buffels, hosted a well-organized rugby day and live entertainment at the Winterveld Recreational's club rugby field and open hall. T

The day's events started with the Ohrigstad rugby club facing Dendron in a league game. The Dendron club proved to be the better team and won 15-3. Shortly afterwards, the Buffels faced Louis Thrichardt in their league game but also were weighed and found too light! The Buffels lost 25-0 against the opposing club. Although it was a devastating day for our home clubs, the rugby was of a good standard and fairly managed by the referee appointed by the Blue Bull Rugby Union in Polokwane. They would like to thank all the supporters and the Tubatse Mobile Medical unit, who supported them and share interest in their club's well-being. After the rugby, everyone moved over to the Winterveld Valley feast hall next to the field, where they were entertained for the remainder of the evening by Die Broers all the way from Cape Town and Jaco Labusgachne from Pta. Willem Montgomery was their Master of Ceremonies and everybody there, enjoyed themselves thoroughly. Mr Charl van der Merwe would like to thank each and every person who contributed to the evening's success and to all the support! It makes them happy to know that their local community still has so much interest in club rugby. Charl would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their sponsors and contributions towards this day's events. Khumula Lodge, Winterveld Club Management, Precrete, Platchro Mining Services, Mopane Bottle store, Macsteel Steelpoort, 2YK, Mega Paints, Pick n Pay in Steelpoort, OK Grocer in Burgersfort, Vallei Glas, AFM Church and to the Platinum Gazette for the exposure and advertising of this event. And then last, but not at all the least, Eastern Chrome Mines for their major contribution towards the day's expenses. ECM, “Thank you for maintaining the field, thank you for the use of the hall and especially, thank you to Mariska Stickling for her assistance. I

would then like to thank the team of H i g h l a n d s Vo l k s w a g e n i n Lydenburg for the water bottles and caps we received from them and also to Jacob from S u p a Q u i c k i n Steelpoort for the new togbags” said Charl. No matter how small t h e s p o n s o r o r c o n t r i b u t i o n , i t motivates the players and enables the Rugby club's Management to reward the team for their sacrifice for the love of the game!
