2.2.1 Speed feedback / diagnostic output In normal operation mode, the SPEED FEEDBACK output will drive a frequency proportional to the fan speed. When an anomaly is found the output is driven low, until the electronic control drive unit must be reset (by means of the PWM input signal at 0 % duty cycle and/or by cycling the power supply). 2.2.2.2 Continuous setting of fan speed
The fan speed is set by means of the duty-cycle value of the PWM input signal, as depicted in the following chart.
A steady low voltage is regarded as 100% duty cycle.
A steady high voltage is regarded as 0% duty cycle.

2.2.4 Fuse protection An automotive fuse according ISO8820 part 3 must be used in the vehicle wire harness. Depending on the application of the fan, it will be necessary to define and verify the correct fuse level by the customer (due to the length of the vehicle cable harness, cross section of the power wires, fuse type).
2.2.5 Power supply residual ripple The maximum value of power supply rms ripple acceptable for the motor fan is 1%. In case of application with high residual ripple values, please contact SPAL in order to find the suitable solution for your specific requirements.
2.2.6 Standby current Standby current is < 100 μA when the fan is disabled (PWM duty = 0 %).

2.3 Protections
2.3.1 Safe standby mode The electronic control drive unit switches OFF its power stage (stopping the fan) if one of the following conditions is detected:
Overvoltage
Undervoltage
Overtemperature
Undertemperature The fan gets back to normal operation as soon as the electronic control drive unit detects that the temperature and supply voltage level are within the rated operating range.
2.3.2 Failure mode The electronic control drive unit switches OFF permanently its power stage (stopping the fan) if one of the following conditions is detected:
Overload / overcurrent (§ 2.3.2.1)
Locked rotor (§ 2.3.2.2 )
Short circuit on motor phases (§2.3.2.3)
Internal electronic power-on self test failure (§ 2.3.2.4)
Internal hardware error (§ 2.3.2.5) In order to exit the failure mode, the electronic control drive unit must be reset by means of the PWM input signal and/or by switching OFF the power supply.
2.3.2.1 Overload / overcurrent protection During fan operation, current flowing into motor phases is continuously measured and compared with the maximum accepted value. Such value is calculated according to functional parameters as power supply voltage, motor speed etc. This in order to guarantee that the fan works continuously inside a safe operating area. If the motor phase current exceeds the maximum admitted value, the electronic control drive unit automatically limits the current to such maximum accepted value (current limiting mode). If the current limiting mode is permanently active for more than 1 minute, the power stage is switched OFF for 30 sec. After this wait time the power stage is re-switched ON and:
1. if overcurrent is still detected, the electronic unit re-activates the current limiting mode and switches OFF its power stage after 1 minute. After 5 sequential attempts of current limiting the power stage is permanently switched OFF (until reset).
2. if the overload condition disappears, the electronic unit doesn’t re-activate the current limiting mode. If this condition is maintained for at least 1 minute, the overload counter is reset and the fan gets back to normal operating mode.
2.3.2.2 Locked rotor protection If a permanent locked rotor condition is applied before or during motor operation, 10 startup attempts are made in sequence with off-time intervals increasing by step of 3 sec (3-6-9-12-15-18-21-24-27 sec) between two following attempts. At the end of the last attempt, the electronic unit switches OFF permanently its power stage until reset and activate diagnostic signal to ECU.
2.3.2.3 Phase short circuit protection The electronic control drive unit is protected against accidental short circuits between motor phase wires. At startup and/or during operation, if two or more motor phase leads are short circuited, the fan operates as follows: 1. the electronic control drive unit switches OFF its power stage (stopping the fan) 2. the electronic control drive unit makes 10 startup attempts with OFF time intervals increasing by step of 3 sec (3-6-9-12-15-18-21-24-27 sec) between two following attempts

3. if the 10 startup attempts fail, the electronic control drive unit switches OFF permanently its power stage (until reset) and activate diagnostic signal to ECU.
2.3.2.4 Internal electronic power-on self test failure If a power-on or wake-up error condition is detected the electronic unit switches OFF permanently its power stage until reset and activate diagnostic signal to ECU. The maximum time of these checks is 1 second.
2.3.2.5 Internal hardware error If an internal hardware error condition is detected during motor operation, 10 startup attempts are made in sequence with off time intervals increasing by step of 3 sec (3-6-9-12-15-18-21-24-27 sec) between two following attempts. At the end of the last attempt, the electronic unit switches OFF permanently its power stage (until reset) and activate diagnostic signal to ECU.
2.3.3 Reverse polarity protection By means of the internal reverse polarity protection MOSFET. The electronic unit is protected against either temporary or permanent application of a reverse polarity on the power supply line. In this situation, the motor remains stopped, without fault output signal activation.
2.3.4 Load dump protection Load dump tests are performed according to ISO7637-2 (2004) specifications, par. 5.6.5.
