Students work for months planning floats4 — Indiana Gazette IUP Homecoming Supplement, Thursday, September 29, 2011

By NICOLE [email protected]

The IUP Homecoming parade justwouldn’t be the same without the elaboratefloats that stroll down the parade route eachyear.

Every homecoming, thousands are amazedby the floats, but do not realize the time, ef-fort and money that has been put into mak-ing them.

Beginning in April, students and staff beginplanning for the parade and thinking aboutfloat themes for the parade in October, ac-cording to Richard Kutz, vice president forstudent affairs and a parade chairman.

He said themes are then voted on and de-termined after considering how the themewill represent the university, and if it will bepossible to construct floats based on thetheme.

“A lot of themes revolve around cartoons, board games or video games,” Kutz said. “Wetry to think about what is manageable andwhat will look good.”

After months of preparation, the studentsfinally begin building their floats, approxi-mately two weeks before the homecomingfestivities.

In addition to many hours spent on theconstruction of the float, he said participantsdo not receive financial support for the ma-terials from the university, leaving them topay for the cost by using their own member-ship funds.

Once they are finished, floats are judgedand prizes are awarded to the top ones.

Although many floats are created by stu-dents involved in Greek organizations, hesaid all student organizations are invited toparticipate.

“This is a great opportunity that gets thestudents involved with the community,” Kutzsaid.

“Specifically, it helps to make a family-ori-entated event.”

THE FLOAT above placed fifth in the 2010 Homecoming Parade.

Students makingmusic throughout

the weekendBy HEATHER BLAKE

[email protected]

With homecoming only a fewdays away, many might be think-ing more about the football gameand the grandeur of the floats inthe parade.

But what about the bands? Each year at homecoming, hun-

dreds if not thousands of currentstudents, faculty and staff, parentsand alumni are entertained by thesounds of the IUP marching bandduring the parade and footballgame, and by the traditionalhomecoming concert performedby the concert and symphonybands and the wind ensemble thatcloses out the excitement ofHomecoming weekend on Sunday.

More than 300 students from theuniversity “will be making music”homecoming weekend, more than200 of which are music majors, ac-cording to Jack Stamp, music de-partment chairman and directorof band studies.

The marching band is “the first ofall the majors” to be assessed earli-er than anyone else, Stamp said.

“They have to put a show on be-fore any professor gives a test,” hesaid. “They’ve always had to dothat. Sometimes a game has beenthe weekend before school started. The band has to be ready beforeschool starts at all.” The marchingband holds its band camp approx-imately 10 days before the first dayof classes, practicing from early inthe morning until late in theevening to be completely ready forthe first football game of the sea-son.

The performances, according toMarching Band Director DavidMartynuik, don’t revolve aroundthe homecoming theme of thatparticular year.

“It varies from year to year,” hesaid. “Sometimes students willsuggest ideas, but I go with what-ever catches my fancy.”

This year, he said, the marchingband is performing a Latin showwith traditional Latin music and apiece by American jazz guitaristand composer Pat Metheny, ac-cording to Stamp.

The traditional pieces are allarranged by IUP alumnus Anthony

O’Toole, Stamp said. The band will play more of the

“traditional IUP standards,” suchas “Hail Indiana,” during thehomecoming parade, Martynuiksaid. The school songs and almamater are performed during pre-game as well, according to Stamp, and the main show will be per-formed at both half-time and post-game, “concluding with a perform-ance of ‘Amazing Grace’ with allmarching band alumni in atten-dance assembled with them on thefield.”

Stamp said the homecomingconcert, which is the first of theseason for the ensemble bands, isthe same with not following thetheme of the weekend. It’s one of

the few concerts where all threeensemble bands will perform to-gether, and the music selection isbased more on the students’ edu-cation than on homecoming.

“It’s basically so you can seeevery instrumentalist, or everywind and percussion player, in thedepartment. It’s the first concert sowe get everybody playing,” he said.“… I won’t perform our heaviestesoteric program for this concert.

“The bands are part of their cur-riculum as music and music edu-cation students,” he added, “so themusic that’s selected is geared to-ward their education. But I makesure that it’s palatable to the audi-ence for homecoming, since that’sgoing to be more of a generic audi-ence.”

Some of the pieces featured inthis year’s concert include “Folk-song Suite” by Vaughan Williams,“Symphony No. 6” by Vincent Per-sichetti and “Dancing Day” byJames Colonna, who originally isfrom Punxsutawney.

Stamp added that a lot of the stu-dents that are in the ensemblebands are also in the marchingband.

“If their parents come up to thehomecoming game, they can stayover and see (their kids) play intheir indoor band, so some of this

is also for the parents as well — tosee their sons and daughters per-form outdoors and indoors.”

The tradition of having thehomecoming concert the day afterthe football game started approxi-mately 15 years ago, Stamp said.

“The idea was to get alumni —especially music alumni — to staySunday and hear the indoor bandthat they were probably a part oftoo at one time,” he said.

The homecoming concert, di-rected by Stamp and music profes-sor Jason Worzbyt, will take placefrom 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at FisherAuditorium in the Performing ArtsCenter. Tickets are on sale at theHUB Ticket Office: $9 regular ad-mission, $8 discounted and $6 forI-card holders.

BANDS IN THE PARADESeveral marching bands will par-

ticipate in the homecoming pa-rade, representing these schools:Homer-Center High School, IUP,Indiana Area Senior High School,Marion Center High School, Pur-chase Line High School and Salts-burg High School.

After the parade, during Pregamein the Oak Grove, there will bemusic by marching bands from theparade and music by a disc jockey.

There are many long-standing IUPHomecoming parade traditions: theROTC cannon to start the parade; color-ful floats reflecting each year’s theme;marching bands; and classic cars withIndiana and university dignitaries.

This year’s parade continues an 11-year tradition added in 1999: paradegrand marshals representing the 50-yearreunion class.

“The Homecoming Parade is one of thecentral activities of the weekend and isone that truly brings community anduniversity together,” said Mary Morgan,Indiana University of PennsylvaniaAlumni Affairs associate director.

“We developed the idea of the parade

marshals as a way to honor our alumniand to showcase the long-standing andconsistent support that our alumni havefor their alma mater.

“It is impressive to see that 50 years ormore after graduation, our alumni wantto return to IUP and are proud to be partof the homecoming festivities.”

This year’s parade marshals are Betty JoMadden Carter, of Glenshaw; Don Ficco,of Johnstown; and Marjorie Turley Nel-son, originally of Indiana and now ofYoungwood; all members of IUP’s classof 1961.

Carter, a retired elementary schoolteacher is the mother of two sons.

She was IUP’s 1960 Homecomingqueen.

Ficco, who retired from his work at GP

Utilities, was a class officer during histime at IUP and was a member of theTKE fraternity.

Nelson retired from her work in theHempfield Area public schools in 1994and then taught at Seton Hill University.

She has traveled extensively with IUPfriends and family, and she also complet-ed post-graduate education.

The parade marshal tradition started in1999 with two members of the class of1949, both of Indiana: Sam Furgiuele andthe late Bob Warren.

Both men are retired faculty from IUPand achieved the rank of faculty emeri-tus.

Furgiuele served on the IUP AlumniBoard, as president, and on the Founda-tion for IUP Board of Directors.
