    Deere is a well-known and

long-trust name in the farmingbusiness. But where did it allstart?

It all began back in 1837when John Deere himself re-located from his home-state ofVermont to Illinois. At the time,Deere was the bread-winner forhis young and struggling fam-ily. His skills as a blacksmithwere in dire need in Illinois.

Upon arriving at their newhome, Deere noticed how thefarmers struggled with the na-

tive land. He thought he couldbuild something more effectivefor them. His first plow wasmade of broken a saw blade.Selling more than 100 plowsannually by 1841, he partneredwith Leonard Andrus to meetthe ever-growing demand.

In 1848 Deere changed hispartnership and moved to Mo-line because of the water pow-er, coal and cheaper transpor-tation. In coming years therewere about 1,600 plows madeannually and Deere was look-ing to expand his products. In 1850 the name of the busi-ness was Deere, Tate & Gould.Other names of the business atthat time included: John Deere,John Deere & Company, Deere& Company, and Moline PlowManufactory.

Charles Deere took over thereins in 1858 when his fatherstepped down from the em-pire he had built. Charles ranthe company for 49 years. Inthe 1860s Charles sticks with

the company name of MolinePlow Manufactory.

Hawkeye Riding Cultiva-tor is the first Deere implementsuitable for riding, is intro-duced in 1863. The next year,John Deere gains the compa-nys first patent for molds usedin casting steel plows. Johnacquires two more within thenext year.

According to www.deere.com, In 1867 Charles Deere

sues Candee, Swan & Co.,a competitor, for trademarkinfringement. The case hasprecedent-setting implications

for trademark law. The Walk-ing Cultivator was granted apatent in 1867. Even thoughfarmers preferred to ride on acultivator, the low price of thewalking competitor was sell-ing itself. In 1868 the companyis incorporated as Deere &Company.

Through-out the companys175 year history there haveonly been eight leaders, manyof them related to John andCharles. The eight leaders in-

clude: John Deere, CharlesDeere, William Butterworth,Charles Deere Wiman, Wil-liam Hewitt, Robert Hanson,Hans Becherer and Robert W.Lane.

Many problems that haveplagued Deere & Companyfrom the beginning are stillgiving them trouble today.

We live in interestingtimes in no small part becauseour industry operates at theconfluence of several powerfulglobal trends, stated SamuelR. Allen, Chairman & ChiefExecutive Officer of Deere &Company during a speech giv-en in May of 2011 in Chicago.First of all, a steadily grow-ing population will result in atleast 30 percent more people tofeed, shelter and clothe in thenext 40 years.

Just to complicate things, this must be done with basi-cally the same amount of land, water and other inputs such asfertilizer. And speculation still

abounds over the effects of cli-mate change on food produc-tion. Put another way, in thenext few decades, agriculturewill be called on to producemore food than in the previous10,000 years, with little or noincrease in resources.

Most of the productiveagricultural land is already be-ing farmedClean water isbecoming increasingly scarce,

    10 Fall 2011 Harvest Time

    By Agriculture SecretaryTom Vilsack

Recently I traveled to NorthCarolina and Virginia to view thedamage from Hurricane Irene, sur-

vey the response efforts, and meetwith local residents. This trip wasmy fourth in as many months tomake sure that the USDA is help-ing families rebuild and recoverfrom natural disasters includingtornados, wild fires, floods anddrought.

So Ive seen how tough timesare affecting folks across the na-tion, and particularly our farmersand ranchers. Unusual weatherpatterns have driven thousands ofAmericans from their homes, andthreatened their livelihoods. Andmy heart goes out to all of those

who have been touched by thesedisasters.

Over the past months, USDAhas worked to minimize damage tohomes, businesses, crop land, and

property. And most importantly,we have focused on protecting theAmerican people and getting themon the road to recovery as quicklyas possible.

For farmers, ranchers and grow-ers who have seen their crops deci-mated by drought, flood or otherdisasters, this year reminds us ofthe critical importance of main-taining a strong safety net. Produc-ers have already received morethan $1.6 billion in crop insurancepayments for their losses this yearon top of emergency programsupport worth $160 million. And

USDA has looked for additionalflexibility in our programs to offercredit and support to help familiesand farm operations rebuild.

    Despite these challenges,

American agriculture is as resilientas ever. In fact, according to UD-SAs new estimates, farm income isat an all time high, and even adjust-ing for inflation this will be the bestyear since the mid-1970s. Net farmincome is up more than 30 percentover last year. And it will meanhigher incomes for farm families.

We are also in the middle of arecord year for agricultural exports, which we should match again nextyear. This will help support morethan 1 million American jobs andmean an agricultural trade surplusof about $42.5 billion.

I know how hard these times

can be. I have seen firsthand fami-lies whose crops were destroyed bya hurricane, or whose fields werecovered by several feet of water.

But I have also watched an im-

pressive response, as USDA hasworked with farmers and ranchersacross the nation to make it throughthese difficult times.

These natural disasters havechallenged us as a nation. Butdespite the setbacks, Americanagriculture is thriving. The menand women who own and operateAmericas farms and ranches aresome of the most resilient in theworld. And I know that with theircontinued dedication and hardwork, we will maintain the strengthand profitability of American agri-culture, and its work to providefood to the nation.

    Agriculture is resilient through disaster

VTF introduces new technologyfor cover crop seeding(www.vantilburgfarms.com)

In the last 3 to 4 years there isa renewed interest in year roundcrops. Producers are learning theneed for active soil 12 months outof the year. Cover cropping; anenvironmentally sound and fun-damentally beneficial practice isresulting in better soil erosion con-trol and fertility improvements.Cover crops are improving soil

tilth, protecting the soil surfaceby reducing sealing, and bindingthe nitrogen and phosphorus to theground keeping it out of our locallakes and streams. The soil is rich-er and giving back better yields.

Currently producers can onlyseed their cover crop by air ordrilling. Both methods have cer-tain limitations. Drilling prior toharvest is not an option and aerialapplication results in inaccurate

seed rating and canopy clearanceissues. Seeding the crops earlywill lead to better germination dueto the cover provided by the crops. The optimum time to seed covercrops in soybeans is when 15% to25% of the leaves are turning yel-low. For corn the optimum time toseed is when the stalks are dry upto the ears or when the sunlighthits 25% of the soil.

VTF believes the best practicefor cover cropping is inter-seedingdirectly into standing crops. Overthe past three years VTF has beenresearching the need for covercrops in our own operation as wellas in our local community. We havesuccessfully designed a seeder thatwill improve your cover croppingprocess. Advantages with this newtechnology are cover crops estab-lishing an early stand which al-lows more time for growth, seed-ing in windy conditions, evenapplication (no streaks), and pro-vides more opportunities to har-

vest during wet seasons. VTF canseed rye, clover, peas and radishesor a mixture of these. Our equip-ment has 90 booms to minimizetracking and 6 crop clearance forseeding in standing corn, on boardscales and metered seed for accu-rate seeding rate.

Call Matt VanTilburg or JoeBeiler (419-586-3077) to discussour ability to seed your cover cropsin the 2011 season and ask aboutour seed availability. We currentlycarry a wide variety of cover cropseed and we will deliver.

    Working Together. Winning Together.

Specialized Spreading of: Water Treatment Lime High Calcium Compost Brown Gold Poultry Litter Agro Soil Gypsum Distributor

If you would like to learn more about how you can benefit by using AgroSoilTM,

please contact your regional distributor for western Ohio and eastern Indiana,

    Mike Bockey.

Serving the Area with Fast Efficient Service

What are the benefits of AgroSoilTM?The application of AgroSoilTM is highly beneficial to crops because it greatly improves the soil environ-

ment.Improved Soil Tilth Improved Root Penetration Improved Water Infiltration

Reduction of Mold Problems Improved Nitrogen Uptake Reduction of Soil Erosion

Both Purdue University and Ohio State University research indicates that gypsum also offsets the im-

pact of aluminum toxicity in low pH soils, helps curb phosphorus runoff and increases iron uptake byreducing the effect of bicarbonates. AgroSoilTM will not affect the soils pH, so it is not a replacement for

other applications that adjust the pH of the soil.

How is it applied?Because of AgroSoils fine granular consistency, it can be aplied using a standard lime spreader or simi -lar spreading device. You can apply AgroSoilTM anytime that fields are suitable for application withoutdamaging the crop or the soil itself.

Most farmers choose to apply AgroSoilTM one to two times per year at a rate of about one ton per acre,

in the fall post harvest and/or in the spring prior to planting. Depending on the quality of your soil, ap-

plication rates up to two tons per acre may be beneficial in many cases.

John Deere (Continued from page 7)too, not only for basic humanneeds, but also as a means towater crops and provide foodfor the fast-growing popula-tion. Today, roughly two-thirds

of the worlds fresh water isused by agriculture.

How can we close the pro-ductivity gap defined by theU.S. Department of Agricultureas the difference between to-days rate of farm-productivitygrowth and the rate required tomeet future demands? For onething, how can we not? Failingto do so, or not acting quicklyenough, means additional hu-man suffering through hungerand malnutrition, perhaps on a

wide scale. Obviously, that isnot acceptable. For a companylike John Deere, which has along history of improving thequality of life and promotinghuman flourishing, it is a causeof great concern.

In the early days of our na-tion, John Deeres steel plowpaved the way for the settle-

ment and the eventual devel-opment of much of America.Today, our equipment is arm-ing another economic revolu-tion by helping feed, fuel and

A $2,500 donation can goa long way to help rural com-

munities. It can fund rescueequipment for a local fire de-partment, purchase new booksto fill a school library or helpstock shelves for the local foodpantry. Now, farmers in 64 coun-ties in Ohio can do their part toplant the seed to help grow theircommunity by signing up for thesecond annual Americas Farm-ers Grow Communities. Thisprogram, sponsored by the Mon-santo Fund, gives farmers thechance to direct $2,500 to theirfavorite community nonprofit.

    Participation in the first

annual Grow Communitiesprogram was incredible, withnearly 50,000 farmers signingup for the chance to supporttheir local communities, saidDeborah Patterson, MonsantoFund president. Farmers acrossthe country made this program ahuge success, and we are thrilledto announce that farmers againhave the opportunity to helpgrow their communities.

Grow Communities wascreated to benefit nonprofitcommunity groups such as ag-riculture youth organizations, schools and other civic groupsthat are important to Americasfarmers.

For Richard Cox, farmer inGrant County, the opportunityto help grow his communitybecame a reality when he wasselected as a Grow Communi-ties winner in January 2011. Ithought this was a great opportu-nity to support FFA, said Cox.Its important to keep kids inagriculture because if we dont, what are they going to eat? Be-ing in FFA helps students learn

leadership, animals, grain pro-duction and general ag; every-thing a farm kid should know.

This year, the program hasexpanded to include a total of1,245 counties. The addition of41 new counties (based on Janu-ary 2011 USDA data for corn, cotton and soybeans and 2007Census data for vegetables) willresult in an additional $102,500in donations. In Ohio, the Mon-santo Fund will invest a total of$160,000 toward nonprofit orga-nizations in rural communities.

Now through Nov. 30, 2011,farmers can apply online at

www.growcommunities.com,or call 1-877-267-3332 to applyby phone. A $1 donation will bemade to local United Way chap-ters for each farmer who signsup, to further enhance the in-

vestment in rural communities.Farmers who meet program

eligibility requirements mayenter regardless of involvementwith previous Grow Communi-ties programs.

Farmers, age 21 and over, who are actively engaged in

farming a minimum of 250 acresof corn, soybeans and/or cotton,

or 40 acres of open field vegeta-bles, or at least 10 acres of toma-toes, peppers and/or cucumbersgrown in protected culture areeligible. The program is open
