WW o r s h i pp p & MM E D I T A T I O NN Fifth Sunday of Lent
How do we convince people that God’s law is written upon their hearts? God is wedded to God’s people. This is a simple and fundamental fact of life. Yet, many ignore this truth and carry on as if they, or humanity as a whole, are the center of the universe. As a grain of wheat has to fall to the ground and die in order to become what it really is, we too must die to our secular images and ideas of ourselves so that we can become who God really made us to be. If all of us kept our focus on God’s deep bonded love with human beings, indeed with our very self, then there would be no need to teach others this fundamental life lesson. They would simply know this truth, as Jeremiah tells us. Somehow, perhaps through original and personal sin, we have lost sight of this reality. We have lost our way and our axis. It is time to find our way back, to learn the virtue of obedience, to pay attention to what God is saying and become aware of the Divine Love that is the reason for all creation. Then, even in our darkest hour when all may seem to be lost, we can say as did Jesus, the model of obedience, “Father, glorify your name.” By this perseverance, people can come to know the Lord and what God has done.

Gospel Meditation Any good teacher or parent will tell you that once a lesson is really learned it doesn’t need to be taught again. When we inter-nalize things we have learned, they become a part of who we are and influence how we perceive and interact with our world. The same is true for the law God has written upon our hearts. Once humanity learns this lesson, we will simply know it to be true and act accordingly. Sometimes, it is hard to get people to learn the lessons they need to learn. They are often distracted, disinterested, conflicted, misdirected, or just too stubborn and unable or unwilling to see what is right before their eyes. Un-derstanding that God is in a loving and committed relationship with those fashioned and formed in God’s own image, seems like such a simple lesson to learn. But history and experience have proven that it is not. We struggle with faith, especially when that faith asks us to learn something very particular about ourselves. We must, like a grain of wheat, fall to the ground and die. Because God’s DNA is at the very core of who we are, there are specific pearls of wisdom that must be acquired before we can live a full life. One very powerful lesson is that it is not the task of the world to tell us who we are and what has meaning, but God. For many, death is not an opportunity for greater life but a permanent ending to the life they have known. Jesus knew every dimension to what it means to be fully human because he was! He knows the joys, limitations, sorrows, frustrations, wonders, suffering, opportunities, and joys of the human experience. Jesus can teach us a wealth of knowledge and life’s lessons from his example, especially obedience. When we accept the law God has placed in our hearts and gain wisdom from it, then when we suffer we learn to listen more attentively to the Voice behind that law. We naturally flee to our Creator for inspiration, consolation, hope, direction, and comfort as we navigate through this time of darkness. We will not need to run from it, subdue it, fight it, or be overcome by it because we will know, having internalized this profound lesson before, that God will bring new life. God’s law is love and love never fails. Even in the moments of Jesus’ deepest despair, he glorified the name of his Father. What he learned allowed him to put everything in perspective and be obedient to the tender, loving Voice that echoed within. As Lent quickly winds down, may we learn the same! Then, may we gain the fortitude and wisdom to help others see what is right before their eyes.

VOCATION SHRINE Parishioners are encouraged to pray for religious vocations, healthy marriages and the single life. Our vocation shrine is available for parishioners to take home for a week of prayer and meditation. Included with the shrine are daily prayers. Please call Richard Martinez @ 505-670-2801 to sign-up to take the vocation shrine home with you to pray with your family for vocations. A sign-up sheet is also available in the Gathering Space.
KNIGHTS “KNEWS” CONGRATULATIONS to LOUIS LINGAT who was selected as the state winner of the Knights of Columbus Essay Contest.
THANK YOU to all who support our Breakfast Burrito Sunday.
RESPECT FOR THE MOST PRECIOUS BODY OF CHRIST As we continue to deal with the challenges brought on by the pandemic of receiving Communion, PLEASE adhere to the following:
Þ If you are wearing gloves, they MUST be removed prior to receiving the host.
Þ As you approach the Priest or Deacon to receive Communion, REMOVE your mask.
Þ Cup the palm of one of your hands within the other to receive the host. It is NOT appropriate to reach out with the fingers and take the host from the per-son distributing.
Þ Consume the host immediately and replace your mask. DO NOT attempt to break it in half as some particles of the Most Precious Body of Christ can fly into the air and fall to the floor.
Þ Leave in reverence and private prayer.
PEW PROTOCOL Praise God that more and more people are returning to worship in person during the pandemic! But with this comes the need for parishioners to observe the seating limit noted on each pew to ensure safe distancing measures. The 9:30AM and 11:30AM Masses are nearing seating capacity (277) each weekend and we anticipate that the numbers will increase for all of the Masses in the near future. PLEASE help us accommodate the increase in numbers by sitting in a pew designated for the number of those from your household in attendance.

COLLECTION BOXES As you are aware, the safety protocols due to the pandemic have changed many of our routines/rituals, etc. for Mass this past year including how our tithing is collected during Mass. As we discontinued the practice of “passing the basket” last year, please note that collection boxes are available at the exits of the Main Church. You may place your collection envelope (preferred method) or loose cash in the box before Mass or while waiting in line for Communion. Other contri-bution methods are noted on page 7 of the bulletin. Thank you for your generosity and continued support of our par-ish!

PENANCE SERVICE—GENERAL ABSOLUTION If you have been away from the Sacrament of Reconciliation, especially now during this pandemic, come back now during Lent. Allow this Lent to be a new beginning in your life of faith. Santa Maria de la Paz will offer two penance services with general absolution on WEDNESDAY, MARCH 24TH with a morning service at 11:00AM and an evening service at 6:00PM.
Persons who receive general absolution have an additional obligation if they are to benefit validly from the sacrament. Canon law requires that they intend in due time to confess those sins which they could not confess at that moment. In other words, the penitent must schedule a private confession in due time. According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church “Individual, integral confession and absolution remain the only ordinary way for the faithful to reconcile themselves with God and the Church...There are profound reasons for this. Christ is at work in each of the sacraments. He personally addresses every sinner: ‘My son, your sins are forgiven.’... Personal confession is thus the form most expressive of reconciliation with God and with the Church.”
Private confessions are available only by appointment with Fr. Joel on Monday and Tuesday afternoons. You may call the Parish Office at 473-4200 to schedule an appointment.
