Notes from the

Regional Vice President Sharvon Benjamin

We are entering the time of year for many celebrations, including the long-standing tradition of giving thanks for a bountiful harvest. As we celebrate, please take some time to reflect on our mission, note the many healthful, seasonal offerings in the cafes and consider how we can lighten up our traditional dishes at home and offer better-for-you options as treats for kids. Plans are underway for Kaiser Permanente to go completely sugared-beverage free in the immediate future and I believe that customers will be amazed at how many satisfying and healthful beverages will be available as better choices.

Whether you have a few minutes to unwind before your next meeting, need ideas for holiday decorating or perhaps to pick up a last minute host or hostess gift before heading to party, you are sure to find something of interest in our Branches Gift Shops.

We are looking forward to working together on many events over the next two months. Remember your partners in the cafes and gift shops and let us know how we can help the community celebrate the season.

Happy Thanksgiving!

to grow from good to great. After a successful celebrity chef event, the café menu was expanded to include October’s culinary promotions, Jalapeno Corn Bread, Chef Carved Turkey Sandwiches, and Adult Grilled Cheese Sandwich, these all garnered above average sales and rave reviews.

Earlier this month, the Refresh Bar baristas visited the Peet’s roasting plant to gain in-depth knowledge of their best-in-class roasting techniques. This opportunity has resulted in increased customer engagement and improved each guest’s experience. Refresh Bar guests have also noticed measurable improvements since new Supervisor Kashka Washington joined the team. More flavored coffees, hot teas, impulse items and pastry options featuring seasonal fall flavors, have ben added to the new menu board.

The Oakland team is currently preparing for Catering Showcase in January 2015, where the new catering menu will be launched, and new china to facilitate VIP events will be featured.

In response to the Kaiser Permanente sugar-free beverage initiative, there are significant changes coming in the beverage choices in Morrison cafes. We are currently working with our national suppliers to have this completed by Thanksgiving, 2014 resulting in Coke fountains in Kaiser accounts featuring Coke Zero, Diet Coke, Sprite Zero, Fanta Orange Zero,

Minute Maid Light Lemonade and Diet Dr. Pepper. We will also be changing some products with smaller sizes to meet PHA requirements and also introducing new products. We welcome your feedback when this program is up and running.

Sweet Potato With winter and the holidays approaching, Morrison cafes will feature even more

delicious items including the nutritious sweet potato, our superfood for the month of November. Although the names are sometimes used interchangeably, sweet potatoes and yams are not the same food and contain different nutrients. Sweet potatoes are nutrient powerhouses with vitamin C, potassium, vitamin E, iron, magnesium, and phytochemicals like beta-carotene and lutein. One medium sweet potato can give your entire day’s supply of vitamin A. Be sure to enjoy sweet potatoes this month at our café entrée stations, grill, salad bar, soup station, grab and go, and even in our desserts!

supervisors in the success of the entire organization can’t be understated; these leaders must have the ability to monitor, guide and support the frontline members who directly serve patients and customers.

“When we look at every outcome that we are trying to achieve on behalf of our client, as well as for our organization, it always comes back to the people, because they have to deliver those results, and deliver for our client,” said Catherine Cape, Director of Engagement, Leadership and Client Retention. “With that in mind, it starts with really engaging people for their purpose in our organization, and then providing them with all of the tools and resources ad support that they need to excel.”

Morrison developed its Superior Training series to create stronger and more effective leaders. The training series, which takes about two months to complete, includes 10 modules that help supervisors learn, develop and execute specific tasks that help them become effective leaders and give them more opportunities for career growth.

Let’s Talk Audits

Food Service and Sanitation. We have introduced a Sanitation Audit Champion, Jeronika Captain, in order to enhance our food safety awareness and commitment to excellence. Each unit director and team is responsible for conducting two weekly self-audits and must submit results and/or action plans to Jeronika each Friday by the close of business. These audits are then followed up by members of the regional team, to ensure that compliance guidelines are met consistently. Morrison Healthcare, in partnership with Kaiser Permanente, takes food safety and sanitation serious and we are committed to increasing team awareness and empowerment in order to deliver quality results.

Chef Bal Arneson is a TV host, an award winning author and well-known culinary personality. She is internationally known for her trademark spice infused cooking.

On the heals of the London premier of “The Hundred-Foot Journey,” and her role as Indian food consultant for the film, Chef Bal arrived at the Pleasanton IT campus full of energy and ready to work with the Diablo Café team. Robert Villa, Director and Rodney Rivers, Sr. Executive Chef, Kaiser System, led the tour and provided updates on the progress of her recipes. The aromas of delicate Indian spices filled the café and the crowds soon followed. Pleasantly surprised by the number of guests familiar with her cuisine, Chef Bal greeted, mingled and autographed booked as often as she served and explained the menu, “the flavors are from the villages of India” she often said. Chef Bal later surveyed diners and even challenged a few to a game of table tennis, she did not win.

Chefs Rodney, Paul and Giovani at the Oakland Medical Center recreated the culinary feast the following day. A delectable buffet of kale salad with cranberries, pecans, feta & beans; brown rice with toasted cumin & green peas; cauliflower & sweet potato; green beans & potato curry; saag paneer; shrimp with spiced coconut sauce; Chef Bal’s signature No Butter Chicken; Naan; Tamarind Chutney with Mango or Mint Chutney were all perfectly paired with hot Chai Tea or Mint and Cardamom Lemonade welcomed numerous Kaiser members and staff, including Support Services Assistant Administrator, Michael A. Grace, and Manager of Food and Clinical Nutritional Services, Kathleen Croft.

Chef Bal also visited the Highland Medical Center on Friday, September 26th, before returning home to Vancouver, CA.
