ALAMO TOWNSHIP VOTERS

Open Letter to Kennedy/HyetWe were happy to learn that you now support the Township’s Road Program.

The first phase is now complete and we are showing over a $65,000 surplus –a testament to the Township’s skillful management of our taxpayers’ resources. The surplus fully validates the year and a half of planning and citizen participationspent in forming the program. Starting with the Township Board establishing aRoad Committee made up of fellow residents. After their careful study wascompleted, we held four face-to-face community meetings to work out anacceptable funding mechanism. We wrote newsletter articles (Summer, Fall,Winter 2013 and Winter 2014) explaining the Program and even advertised themeetings in the Shopper. One meeting had over 300 people in attendance, dutifully taking citizens input. We even incorporated your suggestion to reducethe farm community contribution by 50%. Shortly afterward, you officiallyregistered (May Spcl online minutes) opposition to the Roads Program and nowfind yourselves making an about-face in light of its success and overwhelmingpublic support.

The process by which we created the Roads Program proves that with a clearvision and engaged citizen participation, township problems can be solved. Weare presently using this winning formula to tackle other problems in the Townshipincluding economic development, bringing natural gas to more homes, workingwith our firefighters to improve their department and enhancing our TownshipMuseum and Park. We feel the voters of Alamo Township deserve nothing lessfrom us.

Sincerely,Lou Conti, Alamo Township Supervisor,Dawn Potter-Williams, Alamo Township, Trustee

I was born and raised in Plainwell, where I continue to reside with my wife Amandaand our two daughters. I have a background as a foster care specialist and mentalhealth case manager, and currently work with area hospitals in customer service.I also serve as a Plainwell’s Planning Commissioner. I have a bachelor of socialwork from WMU with a focus on substance abuse. I have an associate in CriminalJustice from Kalamazoo Valley Community College and am a proud graduate ofPlainwell High School.

Why should people vote for me? As a long-standing native resident of Plainwell, I am dedicated to the advocacy and best interests of my neighbors.I would advocate for having a Plainwell High School student council bring their unique views to the city council quar-terly, a warm-welcome plan for new residents, and accountability for leadership in the city, including discussions onmandated trainings for new leaders to appointed positions. We need to continue supporting local business by taxabatements to bring local jobs and business longevity to the Plainwell economy. Intelligent decisions like the city hallmill move over time will play a critical role in cutting wasteful spending. I will represent the people, by the people, and for the people. The arrival of cooler, shorter days is often aprecursor to winter storms dominated bysnowfall. A snow-covered landscape canmake for an appealing image. But heavysnowfall also makes for extra work, especially for drivers who must dig theirvehicles out of the snow after each storm.

Some people live in suburban areas wherethey can park their cars in driveways orgarages, while others live in cities and haveto park on the street, where snow plows can

do a wonderful job of burying vehiclesunderneath mounds of snow. Rescuing a caror truck from a pile of snow can be trickyand time-consuming, but there is a processthat can make the job easier.• Begin by clearing out the tail pipe of thecar. This is a vital first step because failure todo so can back harmful carbon monoxidegas and other fumes into the car. Take thetime to clear out the rear of the car, including the taillights, so you will haveimproved visibility.

• When the exhaust pipe is clear, turn on the car. Some peopleprefer to put the defroster onright away. Others wait until thevehicle warms up before doingso. Having a warm car will meltsome of the accumulated iceand snow and make it easier foryou to clear the car.• The right tools make fasterwork of the task at hand. Ashovel is a necessity, and atelescoping snow broom/icescraper can be helpful. Thisallows you to safely push the snow off theroof of the car. Some regions fine driverswho do not remove snow from the roofs orhoods of their cars, so take the time to cleansuch snow before driving.• Work from the top of the vehicle down.Otherwise, you will end up negating all ofyour work by throwing fresh snow on theareas you already cleared.• By now the defrosters should have kickedin sufficiently enough to make it simple toclear snow from the windshield and rearwindow. Use some deicing windshield fluidto dislodge wiper blades if they have frozento the windshield. Some drivers leave theirwiper blades standing on end and awayfrom the windshield prior to a big storm toprevent them from freezing to thewindshield. Consider this trick if you’reespecially worried about the blades freezingto the glass.

• Use your shovel to carefully remove asmuch snow as possible from around thetires. Be careful not to puncture the tire witha metal shovel. Try to create a tire path in thedirection you plan to move the vehicle. So ifyou will be backing out of the driveway, clearthe way behind the car. If traction is aproblem, use a bit of rock salt or cat litterbehind the tires to give them more grip.Slipping a car mat under the tires also canprovide much-needed traction.• Exercise caution if you are digging out a caron a busy roadway. Make yourself visible toother motorists and use traffic cones, if youhave them, to keep drivers away from yourvehicle. Do not shovel the snow in the pathof oncoming vehicles.Shoveling out after a snowstorm is a taskfew people enjoy. However, it is a necessityof the season and one that can be donesafely and efficiently.

Fall is a time to prepare homes, vehicles andeven our psyches for the arrival of winter. Toget your car cold-weather ready, check andrepair these items now.

Tire Pressure· Tire pressure can drop in cold weather. When tires are underinflated, you lose fuelefficiency, so monitor and maintain tirepressure throughout the winter.

Tires· Those who live in particularly cold climatesshould switch from all-season to winter tires.Much as you wear winter boots to providemore traction and protection than sneakers,so should you equip your vehicle with tiresthat will stand up to winter terrain.

Battery· Check on the status of your battery and itsstarting power. Cold weather can put more

strain on a car battery. A battery that isalready weak may not turn over when youneed it most.

Wiper Blades· Replace worn wiper blades and upgrade toa windshield fluid that is rated for subzerotemperatures. Each of these items willimprove visibility when winter precipitation ismaking its presence felt.

Oil· Schedule an oil change at the beginning ofwinter. Dirty oil can hinder cold-weatherstarts and, if coupled with low coolant levels, can make it difficult for the engine to turnover.

Jumper Cables· Keep jumper cables, a battery booster packand warning cones in your vehicle. Thesecan come to the rescue if your battery dies

and you're stranded on the side of the road.

Emergency Items· While you're stocking the trunk or cargobed, include a shovel, sand or cat litter, aflashlight, an ice scraper, water, and ablanket. These are good emergency items tohave in the event your car breaks down inthe winter. You can dig your tires out of asnow drift with the shovel and apply litter toincrease traction. The blanket will come in

handy if you have to sit in a cold car for awhile awaiting roadside service.

Be A Prepared Driver· Consider taking a winter driving course. Icy,snowy conditions completely change thedefensive tactics needed to navigate theroads. A prepared driver is one who is morelikely to avoid accidents and makes it homesafely.

How to Improve Winter Fuel EconomyMany motorists notice that their vehiclesseem to get less miles per gallon in coldweather than in warm weather. That’s not atrick of the brain, as studies have shown thatcars do, in fact, have poorer fuel in economyin cold weather.

According to the United States Departmentof Energy, fuel economy tests have indicatedthat, when driving in short-trip city driving, aconventional gasoline car’s gas mileage isabout 12 percent lower at 20 F than it wouldbe at 77 F. The disparity is even greater inhybrid vehicles, which can see their fueleconomy decline by roughly 34 percentwhen driven at 20 F. Before drivers canunderstand how to improve their winter fueleconomy, it’s beneficial to learn why coldweather has such an adverse effect on acar’s fuel economy.

A host of factors combine to reduce fueleconomy in the winter. When temperaturesdip, engine oil and other drive-line fluids alsoget colder, and this increases engine andtransmission friction. That forces the vehicleto work harder and use more fuel. An enginealso takes longer to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature when the weatheroutside is cold. This won’t have too great animpact on fuel efficiency when taking longtrips, but the shorter the trip the lesseconomical the vehicle’s use of fuel will be,as a shorter trip means the vehicle isspending a larger percentage of the overalldrive at a less fuel efficient temperature.

Another reason fuel economy suffers in the

winter is the necessities and certain creaturecomforts drivers need when driving in thecold weather. Windshield defrosters andvehicle heating systems use a substantialamount of power, and that usage forces thevehicle to expend more energy and usemore fuel. And while many drivers considerheated seats one of the greatest automotiveinventions known to man, those seats alsouse up a lot of power that negatively impactsfuel economy.

But factors outside the vehicle also impact itsfuel economy in the winter. For example, colder temperatures decrease tire pressure, and that increases roll resistance, whichmeans the car must work harder and usemore fuel to get down the street than it wouldif it were riding on fully inflated tires in thesummertime. Cold air also is more densethan warm air, and that increasesaerodynamic drag on the vehicle, which thenneeds to use more fuel to counter theincreased drag.

So what can be done to improve fueleconomy in the winter? Fortunately, driverscan take several steps to do just that.

• Park the vehicle in a garage. Leaving yourcar in the driveway in the winter means youmight have to dig the vehicle out come wintersnowstorms. But that’s not the onlyinconvenience of parking your vehicleoutside in the winter, as doing so canadversely affect its fuel economy. Whenpossible, park the car in the garage, as thisincreases the initial temperature of the

engine, engine oil, drive-line fluids, and thevehicle’s cabin. This can shorten the time ittakes for the engine to reach its most fuel-efficient temperature while decreasing theengine and transmission friction thatnegatively impacts fuel efficiency.

• Disregard conventional wisdom. Con- ventional wisdom has long suggested thatidling a vehicle for several minutes will warmup the engine more quickly than simplydriving. But many vehicle manufacturers nowrecommend that drivers idle their vehicles forno more than 30 seconds, noting that idlingthe car unnecessarily wastes fuel and thatdriving the vehicle is the fastest way to warmup its engine. If you must warm up thevehicle, stick to the now widely acceptedguideline that recommends idling for nomore than half a minute.

Another nugget of conventional wisdommotorists may want to ignore concerns themotor oil they use in the winter. Many vehiclemanufacturers now recommend a specifictype of oil to use when driving in coldweather, so follow that advice instead ofadhering to past practices that may not havebeen as fuel efficient.

• Monitor tire pressure. As noted, coldertemperatures decrease tire pressure, sodrivers should monitor their tire pressureregularly throughout winter to keep theirvehicle safe and to ensure they are notwasting fuel.• Remove the roof rack. Summeradventurists who love tying their mountain

bike or kayak to their vehicles’ roof rackbefore heading off to explore parts unknownshould remove those roof racks when thetemperatures dip. Roof racks increase windresistance and decrease fuel economy, soremove them during the offseasons.Fuel economy will almost certainly decreasewhen the mercury drops. But drivers canemploy a number of strategies to make theirvehicles more fuel efficient in cold weather.

Otsego United Methodist Church“WHERE JESUS’ LOVE IS LIVED!”

223 E. Allegan Street(M89) • Box 443Otsego, MI 49078

“EXPECT A MIRACLE!”“All things are possible to him who believes”

– Mark 9:23Do you believe in miracles?A miracle may be defined as a supernaturalintervention of God in human events. My very life isa miracle of God. I was born premature, weighed 3lb. 3 oz. at birth and spent the first six weeks of my lifein an incubator. I was not expected to live. Over the years of pastoral ministry I have witnessedseveral miracles. I have witnessed miracles in myown family and in the lives of persons I have served.I have seen the love of Christ change lives and healbodies. The operative word for “Words of Faith and Hope” isbelieve. To believe is to put our entire trust in JesusChrist for salvation and for daily living. “Faith is beingsure of what we hope for and certain of what we donot see.” (Hebrews 11:1).One example is the healing of the boy with an evilspirit (Mark 9:14 -29). This story follows thetransfiguration of Jesus Christ (another miracle).

There are at least 3 take-aways from this story:l. The compassion of Jesus.2. The creation of faith in the boy’s father.3. The ability of Christ to perform miracles.

Sometimes we believe, but we are still unsure. Inother words, our faith is not complete.Jesus honored the father for being honest about hisfeelings and Christ did heal the young man. Moral ofthe story: If we will act on the faith we have, it will beenough to perform miracles!Good news: The power of Jesus Christ to performmiracles is still present in our world today if only wechoose to believe.

Prayer: Lord, I believe! In Jesus’ name. Amen.Peace to you and please join us for worship thisSunday in a church where Jesus’ love is lived.
