DET International CRICOS Code - 00861K

From The Principal… Dear Parents/Carers

Do you know our four school values? An easy way to remember these is to remember that our values commence with the same letters as Rowville Primary: Responsibility, Pride, Respect, Perseverance.

These values have been identified as our core and we aspire to

ensure that they underpin and shape the daily interactions between

students, staff and parents.

To ensure we bring our school values to life in a practical manner for students, we will aim to emphasise one value per term through our awards, presentations and assemblies. This term we have selected ‘Respect’ as the key value which we will focus on. There are many ways of showing respect. While having respect for someone can be a feeling, we show respect through our actions and behaviors. Some tangible ways that we demonstrate Respect are through:

The way we speak to people using tone, words and body

language

Accepting others rights, needs and differences as okay and

legitimate

Giving others their own personal space and allowing for the level

of personal space to change depending on situations and

relationships

Allowing others privacy

Ensuring others can protect their modesty

Maintaining confidentiality

Attentive listening when others are speaking

Responding to the concerns of others

Avoiding gossiping or putting others down

Showing interest in others about how they feel and what they

think

Ensuring everyone is included rather than excluded

Keeping agreements that you have made with others

Being sensitive to thoughts and feelings of others

Working constructively to resolve problems and differences

Listening to and accepting feedback

Making changes to our behaviour if we fail to respect others

Looking after other people’s property

Keeping the environment clean for everyone to enjoy

Respecting yourself.

We would be keen to add to this list, so if you identify another respectful behaviour through your discussions at home, please feel free to let me know.

In previous years we conducted a survey with students in years five and six to find out what each child thinks of our school. The Attitudes to School survey is an annual student survey offered by the Department of Education and Training to assist schools in gaining an understanding of students' perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your child's schooling experience.

The Department has updated the survey for 2017 to include important new measures that are known to influence student engagement and performance. Our students in years four, five and six will participate in the survey. Each child will complete the survey online during school hours using a purpose built secure online survey tool. It is important to note that we are not in any way undertaking any “testing.” Each child has the right to refuse or withdraw from the survey at any point before, during or after completion of the survey.

Each child will be provided with a unique login to complete the survey. The student login is an assigned identifier that may be used by the Department to combine data for research purposes only. Each child’s privacy and the confidentiality of the child’s survey responses will be protected at all times. No identifiable personal data is included in the survey response file.

The survey results will be reported back to the school in Term 3, 2017. No student can be identified in the results reported to schools or in any other report of the data.

This year the Attitudes to School survey will be conducted at our school in the week commencing 29 May. The survey will take 20 - 30 minutes to complete.

Please speak to your child’s teacher if you would like more information or visit the Department of Education and Training website:

From the Acting Assistant Principal

Dear Parents/Carers

On Monday in assembly I spoke about showing respect for our environment and I shared a story about an eight year old boy in America who set up a recycling company from the age of three. He collects plastic bottles and cans from around his local neighbourhood to ensure they are being recycled and not ending up in the ocean. This is evidence of a young person taking action to create a positive impact on the environment and it encouraged me to think about what changes I can make to my daily life that can help the environment.

Life without plastic is almost unimaginable. It's become central to the way we live our lives - from everyday items like food packaging and water bottles, to sophisticated high end products. But how many of us know what happens to that plastic when we throw it away? The way in which I show respect for the environment is by using reusable shopping bags and purchasing fruit and vegetable without packaging. I set the challenge to students this week to bring rubbish free lunches to school. If we have less packaging in our school we will notice a change in the cleanliness of our yard. We all have a role to play in our community by showing respect for our school by caring about our environment.

Thank you to the parents that have taken the time to complete the parent survey. I would like to encourage all parents to fil l out the survey below. The feedback collected will be used as part of our school review process for 2017 and will help guide the vision for the next four year strategic plan. We have generated an electronic copy of the questions below:

On Thursday 11th May, FORPS will be running the Mother’s Day Stall from 11.15am-1.25pm. Please remember to bring your money to purchase a gift in preparation for Sunday. For students who are absent, there will be an opportunity to purchase on Friday at recess.

We are all very excited for our upcoming Twilight School Day on Thursday 25th May. A reminder that dinner orders for Twilight School will need to be handed in to the office by Friday 19th May. We also need each student to return the care arrangement form to their teacher by Wednesday 17th May.

Have a wonderful week ahead. Liam Jury

National Family Reading Month

May is National Family Reading Month. Scholastic Australia promote this event which is now in its 21st year, where families are encouraged to come together to share a love of reading. It is designed to get more children reading with their families.

As role models, adults reading to children can have an enormous effect on them. I encourage everyone to take a moment and read and or talk with your child about your favourite children’s books. Most of all enjoy reading books with your family this month.

You Wouldn’t Want To Live Without… Non-fiction series

I recently displayed some new titles in the library from a series called You Wouldn’t Want to Live Without….Gravity, Clocks and Calendars, Writing, Plastic etc. These very interesting children’s books have great information with colourful illustrations and cartoons and sections called Top Tips, How it works, Did you know? You can do it! Students were asked to have a look at the books and finish the sentence I wouldn’t want to live without… and tell me why? I received some great answers like “friends and family” and also the following:

“I wouldn’t want to live without Thomas the Tank Engine stories because I love Thomas and the magic railroad.” Jack 2A

“I wouldn’t want to live without writing and school and friends because if there was no writing there would be no books for kids because you will not learn anything. If you had no friends you would be lonely.” – Sophie 2B

“I wouldn’t want to live without books because you learn with books.” – Leon 3A

“I wouldn’t want to live without books, family, guitar, friends and a library because they are interesting and detailed. I wouldn’t want to live without a library .”– Sophia 4A

“I wouldn’t want to live without reading books because reading is my other life, it’s a world of knowledge.”– Lily 5B

“I wouldn’t want to live without books. The books I read transport me to a world where everything is ok in the end. I wish our world was like that but it’s not, so I need books to make this world a small reality!”– Lacey 5B

And my favourite “I wouldn’t want to live without books because they are made to entertain people and to learn about the world.” – Petelo 3A

Thank you to everyone for your thoughtful answers. All the entries have been made into a book to share with other students.

Thursday 4th May was International Star Wars day. The slogan for Star Wars day is “May the fourth be with you!” I was also informed that the 5th May is

Revenge of the 5th! Lots of our students enjoy the Star Wars books and we have a very good selection from early readers, longer novels, non-fiction and puzzle books. Enjoy some Science fiction! It’s out of this world!

Overdue Books

I regularly print overdue reminder letters for students as they are needed. The letters list the number of current loans, when they were due back, the Dewey number, Barcode and Title. Please note that “reminder letters” help students to remember what they have borrowed and where they might be. Please come and see me anytime if you have any concerns about missing library books. They usually turn up somewhere!

Plastic Bags

If anyone has any spare plastic bags, please send them to the library. I encourage all students to have a library bag or use a plastic bag to take home their library books.
