GO TO YOUR DRIVE
• Make sure you have a folder called 10th Lit &
Comp.
• Within that folder, create a new DOC.
• Call it Notes for The Kite Runner
• Open it up.
• Add the headings Pashtun & Hazara to your
notes
• Also add Sunni Muslim and Shia Muslim
Reminders: • People who practice the religion of Islam are called
Muslims.
• An overwhelming majority of Muslims are peaceful, loving people who want to live a good life.
• Islamic extremists (such as Osama Bin Laden and the Taliban) have given the entire Muslim community an unfair and unfavorable reputation.
• We need to look beyond this. It is SO important you become informed adults. Ignorance is never cool.
• The Koran or Qu’ran is the Muslim version of the bible.
• Their god is Allah. Their equivalent of Jesus (prophet) is Mohammad.
The Tenets of
Islam
• The distinct racial
division in
Afghanistan occurs
between the Hazara
and the Pashtun.
• The Pashtun are the
majority race and
discrimination
against the Hazara is
widespread.
The Pashtuns are typically Sunni,
and the Hazara are typically Shia.
The two groups have racial AND
religious differences which causes
more hatred.
The Sunnis
Make up 90% of the
Muslim population in
Afghanistan
Most Sunnis are part of the Pashtun ethnic group.
The Pashtun ethnic group believes themselves to be
the “rightful owners” of Afghanistan
They believe they are superior to Hazaras.
Because they come from more privileged
backgrounds, the Pashtuns have more money and
more rights.
Many Pashtuns cruelly discriminate against Hazaras.
The Shiites
Make up 10% of the
Muslim population in
Afghanistan
Most Shiites are part of the Hazara ethnic group.
The Hazaras’s ancestors came from Mongolia and China.
Most Hazaras look a bit different from Pashtuns, due to
their lineage.
Hazaras have continually been discriminated against by
Pashtuns.
They come from poor backgrounds and have less money
and rights.
Hazara • The Hazaras are most easily
identified by their tendency
to have light-colored and
almond-shaped eyes and
round faces.
• They are possibly direct
descendants of Genghis
Khan, who invaded
Afghanistan in the 13th
century.
• Thus, the Pashtuns see
them as “invaders” and not
true Afghanis.
• The Hazaras typically function
as the servant class and
experience very few of the
freedoms enjoyed by the
Pashtun upper-class.
• They typically are
not allowed to go
to school or even
learn how to read
and write.
• In the story, one of
our main
characters, Hassan
will be a Hazara.
• The protagonist of
the story, Amir,
will be Pashtun.
