President’s MessageThat’s a wrap for 2019

i All,

This is my last message for the year of 2019 and what a year it has been. We had PMI’s 50th anniversary and unveiling of the new PMI and Adelaide Chapter logo recently at our End of Year Function with over 100 people in attendance.

When I reflect back on 2019, I am proud of all the achievements the Chapter has made to serve over 300 members not only with changing up our events calendar but also increasing our professional development initiatives further (1 day leadership workshop, Project Outreach at Pembroke, student engagement forum, PMP & ACP study groups). We continued to support several special events this year - Adelaide Connected V3.0, IIBA Adelaide Professional Day and our National Conference in the Gold Coast.

We wouldn’t have been able to achieve all the above without the support of our Chapter Sponsors I would particularly like to thank SA Water, Paxus, PMOAus, Turner & Townsend, MFY Pty Ltd, Deloitte, BDO and Torrens University for their continued support throughout 2019.

Looking forward to 2020 the Chapter Board will be coming up to the end of their term and will be going through nominations. Nominations will open in early January 2020 and we will look to hold our Annual General Meeting on the 27th February 2020 to welcome the new Chapter Board. More details will come out on this soon but if anyone is interested in nominating or volunteering in PMI Adelaide please contact me via [email protected]

The Chapter Board and volunteers have done exceedingly well this year through many long hours of contributing to the community and profession. There will be many more challenges ahead, but I would like to thank the Board for all their hard work and contributions as we look forward to setting a new bar next year.

I hope everyone will enjoy some time over the holiday period with their families and wish you all the best.

Regards,

Scott Pearce - Chapter President

Events SummaryJuliana do CantoEvents Director

Twelve months ago, the events team of PMI got together to define our objective for 2019. We revisited our mission and vision and read our member’s feedback survey. The key goals were defined: quality and diversity. We would like to offer our members great diverse events within everything we could: topic, location, time and more. And we have succeeded.

In 2019, PMI delivered 12 amazing and diverse events. We have talked about digital disruption, environmental engineering, leadership, cost efficiency, culture, infrastructure and more, learning where project management sits within all these areas. We had evening events, breakfast events, and even a weekend event, so every member had a chance to flex their schedule and join us. We adopted different event models which included presentation, panel discussion, site visit, workshop and networking only. We got closer to a range of different industries and,

thanks to our sponsors, hosted PMI events in a lot of different and new venues.

All of this would not have been possible without our great team of volunteers, who invest their free time to help the Adelaide project management community getting together at least once a month. We also have to thank our sponsors who hosted high quality PMI events during 2019. Turner and Townsend, KPMG, Torrens University, BDO and Deloitte are some of these amazing organisations. However, more than anyone else, we would like to thank the ones who really make the events successful: you. Our members. Our events would not be the same without each member who attends the events with a smile, willing to learn and exchange personal and professional experience within Adelaide’s community.

Thank you all for making 2019 such an amazing year, we are looking forward to doing even better in 2020!

Cyber Risk from a Project Management Perspective

PMI event at Deloitte was amazing, with a valuable session about cyber risk and technology implications for project management processes. David Hobbis and Michael Trewartha shared their expertise within cyber risk and security, how this can affect a company and why technology and cyber security should be enablers instead of blockers. Also, they explained how a project manager can prevent cyber risk by taking different action on each phase of a project life cycle. The attendees really engaged with the topic, asking a range of questions and raising interesting discussions. Thanks to Deloitte, PMI and all the members who made this event so great!

Adelaide Connected 3.0

Peter PavanImmediate Past President &

Chair Adelaide Connected

Our 3rd joint professional association event held on Thurs 7th November was once again, a sell-out of 120 people at the Adelaide Convention Centre.

Our theme this year was “Future of Work in SA”.

David Kerner, ASG Group SA State Manager, opened the evening with some interesting messages.

Stephen Yarwood (Urban Futurist) shared insights about the future of cities and how technology will create a new system for humanity.

Cathy Riach (Employment Brand & Partnerships, BAE Systems) then reminded us of the major highlights from the past 3 industrial revolutions and her views of how we will work and interact during industry 4.0.

Warwick Groves (CIO, Discovery Parks Group) and Neeraj Kapoor (Principal Consultant, ASG Group) then covered the recent digital transformation and customer experience enhancements happening across the Discovery Parks Group.

Some thought provoking Q&As aired during the panel session with the inclusion of David Coltman (CEO of TafeSA), with a closing message and thanks from Lesley Gardner, Paxus SA State Manager.

Another entertaining event and excellent networking/connecting event.

Thanks again to our speakers, Stephen, Cathy, Warwick, Neeraj and David.

A huge thanks to our Sponsors and supporting associations: ASG Group, Paxus, AEA, IAF, IIBA, PMI Adelaide Chapter, PMOAus and Torrens University.

And a special thanks to our team of volunteers, who continue to make this happen:

Adrian Leadbeater, Kerry Maidment-Grocke, Kushal Kar, Linda Field, Mustafa Kadir, Nick Hadjinicolaou, Romildo Votto and Sharon Honner.

Book early for our 4th event in 2020, to avoid missing out.

MentoringOver the last 12 month we had the opportunity to provide continuous Project Management mentoring to a few of our members and one on one sessions to other members for specific needs.

Mentoring provides options to the mentees in resolving issues or providing a different perspective on a problem. The sessions are always in confidence.

Project OutreachThis year Project Management as a Life Skill was presented 3 times. Twice at St George’s College and once at Pembroke which translated to approximately 60 students trained in the Project Management Methodology.

The students at St George College used the methodology to develop business cases for multiple School excursions to be presented to the principal, where one or two were to be selected.

Pembroke students has been using the methodology over the years to run various charity projects.
