Why is ACS involved?
Cancer Disparities in Asian American Community
• Cancer is the leading cause of death for female Asian Americans. In fact, Asian American females are the first American population to experience cancer as the leading cause of death.
• Lung cancer rates among Southeast Asians are 18% higher than among White Americans.
• In 1990, 63.3% of Hmong people lived in poverty, compared to the total U.S. poverty rate of 20%. They also suffered limited or no access to medical services due to lack of insurance.
Hmong Health Fair Outcomes
• 115 participants based upon Intake forms• 79 Female and 36 Male responses• Will you share this information? □ Yes □ No• I will share this information with_________ 70% responded, “yes” to sharing with
friends, family, and physicians• What do you plan to do differently because of
the health fair? 69% responded to either improving diet
and fitness, or following regular medical check-ups
