  • Our New Pastor,

Welcome Fr. Charles Fr. Charles N. Mangano was born on Long Island and is the youngest of four children. He attended public schools and received his BA in Theology and Philosophy from Molloy College, and a Masters in Divinity at the Immaculate Conception Seminary in Huntington. Father also received a certificate in Retreat Ministry and Spiritual

Direction from the Institute for Priestly Formation (IPF). He attributes his strong Catholic upbringing to his faith filled parents and to the wonderful priests who served in their parish of St. Matthew in Dix Hills. Father Charles is well known around the Diocese because of the music ministry he shares with his sister Laurie. They currently have 13 albums of inspirational music and prayers, 1 DVD, and 1 Music Video. They regularly provide Nights of Recollection in parishes where they evangelize through music, song, and sharing. Through their music ministry they have been able to donate over $400,000. to charity. They have been co-hosts of their TV show on Telecare since 1998. Their present show is entitled “God Is Good”. Father has a deep love for the Blessed Mother who proved his vocation to him on August 15, 1984 and she has guided him in his 26 years as a priest. His main desire is to bring people into a love relationship with God who is in love with them. Father has just completed his 12th year as Pastor of Curé of Ars Church in Merrick. He previously served as Associate Pastor of St. Catherine of Sienna in Franklin Square, St John Nepomucene in Bohemia, and St. Patrick’s in Bay Shore. In addition, he serves on the board of the Padre Pio Miracle Foundation which aids children with cancer. He is very happy to be assigned to St. Joseph Parish, especially under the patronage of such a great saint.

Deacon’s Corner Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time - Cycle C

Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, This past week our family got together at the home of our second oldest daughter for a “reveal party.” Our daughter is pregnant; she and our son-in-law are expecting their first child to be born in November of this year. They had us all over to reveal the sex of the child, which was determined by a sonogram. We found out our next grandchild will be called Wyatt: yes, it is a boy, though we would love our newest grandbaby girl or boy. At the end of the day we gathered around the big screen television and watched a DVD of the sonogram that revealed the sex of the baby. I was amazed at the detail and clarity of the video. The baby is four and half months old and we could see all of his limbs, his arms and legs, his little head and hands. At one point it appeared the little guy began to suck his thumb, which made all of us ooh and aahhh. And of course the technician used a digital arrow to help all see the baby is a boy, which embarrassed our daughter. As I watched the video I became deeply saddened, though I didn’t show it or let anyone know. I began to reflect; the baby is 24-26 weeks old; many states allow abortions without restriction up to this stage of development. How many people considering ending the life of their baby would have second thoughts if they could see the miracle we were watching on this video? Friends, the life inside the mom is not just a mass of cells; it is a living, breathing, growing human being with a soul given to the child by the God of life. Two weeks ago the Supreme Court once again denied a state, Texas in this case, the right to attempt to give some protection to most defenseless among us, an unborn child. This court has taken upon itself the role of “the country’s ex-officio medical board with powers to approve or disapprove medical and operative practices and standards throughout the United States,” in the memorable words of Justice Byron White, wrote Austin Ruse in an online article. Justice Clarence Thomas wrote in his dissent, “Unless the Court abides by one set of rules to adjudicate constitutional rights, it will continue reducing constitutional law to policy-driven value judgments until the last shreds of its legitimacy disappear.” As of January 14th of this year there have been almost 59 million babies aborted since the Roe vs. Wade decision by the Supreme Court in 1973 legalizing abortion. Fifty nine million babies, girls and boys that never had the opportunity to see the light of day, to be held, caressed, loved by their moms and dads. All this was going through my mind as I watched this amazing video of our unborn grandchild, little Wyatt. As I came back from my reflections I looked at our two grandchildren sitting with us, watching and laughing at their unborn cousin (our five year old grandson Cooper, Bubba, went hysterical when he saw his little cousin’s butt!). I reached over and grabbed the two of them and pulled them on my lap, holding them close. “Not so tight, Pop Pop, Bubba complained. Heavenly Father, I pray for an end to abortion; I pray for the conversion of all those who promote abortions, those who profit off of the destruction of life, those who ignore the overwhelming evidence of life and make decisions that will benefit their political career. I pray for the mothers and fathers of all unborn children that they begin to have an understanding of the miracle that is growing in the mother’s womb. I pray for any and all who may have taken part in abortion; may they know you are a God of limitless mercy and love Who desires to forgive and heal. I ask our Lady, Mary, the Mother of our Lord Jesus to pray with me. In Jesus name. Amen.

  • MY RIGHT ARM I hadn’t seen Kim in a few years. As often happens, time…such a precious gift to each of us…has a

way of rearranging priorities, so while I was past the “children in college” phase of my life when first we met, Kim’s offsprings had not reached that stage. We would see each other a few times a year, always at golf outings, and we developed a nice friendship. Now her children are in the college mode, so she is busy trying to balance all the challenges that spring up with four children of college age.

A few weeks ago, I did see Kim again for the first time in years. It was at a fundraising golf outing held in her native Pennsylvania for children of soldiers who have recently died in combat. It was a well-attended event, and lots of money was raised for a very worthy cause. I played with three other amputees from Long Island, and, by chance, we sat with Kim’s high school basketball coach at the dinner that followed. He simply raved about Kim, though it had to be over 30 years since he had coached her. “She was the best player I ever coached,” he said with a broad smile, “she had more heart than anyone. Even after her accident, she still was able to play baseball in college. She was some tough competitor.”

Nothing he said surprised me about Kim. Having her left arm amputated above the elbow after an industrial accident soon after her high school graduation, Kim decided her amputation would not define her. She had a successful academic and athletic career in college, and, after she married and began to raise her family, she took up golf. I met her at my first amputee golf outing and marveled at her athletic ability, but more so for her welcoming ways. Clearly I remember when we met the second time; we both had to catch planes on the final day of the outing, so we were to tee off at 7 a.m., well before the others played. It had rained the night before so the course would not allow us to use riding carts. I decided that I would walk the course, pulling a hand cart with my clubs attached. There were a few times during the

round where I had difficulty pulling the cart. It was at such times that Kim pulled my cart as well as hers with her one good arm until my strength returned. I have never forgotten that. I am blessed to often see people who face life head on despite some challenges that come their way; they show me that it can be done. When I saw Kim, I thanked God for putting her in my life. If you look around, you will see some similar people in

    your life as well.

PRAYER Bountiful Father, we have been often told that You never give us more than we can handle.

Sometimes, however, we forget that. Give us the Grace we need to see the examples that You place in our lives to remind us what can be done if we have both faith in You and faith in ourselves. Help us to remember that You are with us every step of the way. This we ask in the name of

the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
