Qualifying notes
» One of the more intriguing players to make it through
qualifying was Mike Leach (Williamsburg GC), who returned 69
to grab medalist honors at the Williamsburg GC qualifier. Leach
was a first-team Walter Camp All-American at tight end during
his senior year at William & Mary before embarking on a 16-year
NFL career as a long snapper that included stints with the Ten-
nessee Titans, Chicago Bears, Denver Broncos and Arizona Cardi-
nals.
» The father-and-son combo of Ray Dingledine and Quint
Dingledine (Stonhenge G&CC) qualified for the event at Lake
Chesdin GC, with each player returning 75 to make the field.
» Quite a turnaround: Elmer Amaya (Washington G&CC) shot 82
in the River Creek qualifier but took advantage of his second
chance in the VSGA Last Chance Qualifier at Mattaponi Springs,
returning 68 for a 14-stroke improvement and a spot in the field.
» Parker See (The Club at Ironwood) posted the best qualifying
score of any competitor, a 65 that earned him medalist honors
at the Bide-A-Wee qualifier.

College standouts highlight Amateur field The last three VSGA Amateur champions have played golf for Virginia Tech. Will the Hokie win streak extend to four in 2018? Defending champion and 2017 U.S. Amateur semifinalist Mark Lawrence Jr. (Independence GC) is back for another run at the title. But he won’t be the only college player looking to claim the trophy. Since 2007, only two mid-amateurs (players ages 25 and older) have claimed the title: Scott Shingler (Dominion Valley CC) and Pat Tallent (Farmington CC). In every other year, the winner was either a college or high-school student. So it’s natural to look to the group of collegians and recent graduates in the field to try to identify a favorite. A closer look:
Mark Lawrence Jr. (Independence CC): Lawrence undeniably is a stalwart when it comes to match play. He won three VSGA Junior Match play titles and is 14-3 in match play at the Amateur, having reached at least the quarterfinals in each of four times he’s made it to match play.
Ian Hildebrand (Stoneleigh G&CC): Ranked fourth on Virginia Tech’s roster with a 73.90 scoring average.
Connor Burgess (Boonsboro CC): Posted a 74.0 scoring average for Virginia Tech and recorded one top-five finish.
Joey Jordan (Willow Oaks CC): Promoted from Virginia Tech’s club team mid-year, Jordan posted a 74.17 scoring average in 12 rounds.
Nathan Chuwait (1757 GC) and Connor Messick (International CC): Both played at UVa last year, with Messick appearing in one event.
Trey Wren (Cedar Point CC): Led Temple with a 75.4 scoring average.
Brandon Weaver (Loudoun G&CC) and Adam Szwed (Old Hickory GC): Both were regulars in Longwood’s lineup, with Weaver posting a 74.17 scoring aver-age and Szwed a 75.55 average.
Erik Dulik (Reston Nat’l. GC): Ranked third at Louisville with a 72.28 average.
Hunter Duncan (Blacksburg CC) and Peter Gasperini (Halifax CC): Each played 26 rounds for Radford. Duncan posted a 74.54 average and Gasperini a 74.61.
Parker See (The Club at Ironwood) and Ty Olinger (Blacksburg CC): At Radford, Olinger appeared in one event. See was on the roster but did not play.
Teddy Zinsner (Belle Haven CC): 2017 VSGA Junior Stroke Play champion earned first-team All-Ivy League honors as a Yale frosh.
Florian Blatti (VSGA eClub Alexandria): Played in two events at George Mason.
Brandon Berry (River Bend Club): Rising sophomore at Loyola (Md.)
Andrew Spiegler (The Olde Farm): Posted 75.17 average in 24 rounds for South Carolina as a freshman.
Bryce Johnson (International CC): Recent William and Mary grad posted 76.32 average in 21 rounds.
Daniel Stamper (First Tee Greater Richmond): Posted 76.10 average in 30 rounds for VCU.
Ryan Muthiora (Spring Creek GC): Selected to 2018 NCAA Division III PING All-America team; Kenyon standout qualified for DIII championship as an individual.
John Luke Thornton (The Gauntlet GC): Played 23 rounds for North Carolina Wesleyan with a low round of 70.
Travis Broome (VSGA eClub Virginia Beach): Two top-five finishes and a 75.45 scoring average for Barton College.
Carter Morgan (Hobbs Hole GC): All-ODAC selection for Virginia Wesleyan post-ed 74.3 stroke average.
Basil Boyd (Chatmoss CC): Rising sophomore at Sewanee College.
Lance Keiser (Prince William GC): Ferrum player qualified for DIII champion-ship as an individual.
Kurt Funkhouser (Trump National Washington DC) and Chris Brugge (1757 GC): Both played key roles at Christopher Newport this past year.
Jason Spaar (Blue Hills GC): Ranked third at Bridgewater with 77.7 average.

Utley’s time?
Former University of Richmond standout Jordan Utley
(Independence GC) has been one of the Amateur’s most dog-
ged match play competitors in recent years. He’s participated
in the event three times since 2014 and has reached the cham-
pionship match twice. During that time, he’s 8-3 in match play,
with his losses coming to Jake Mondy in the 2014 title match,
Adam Ball in the round of 32 in 2015 and Mark Lawrence Jr. in
last year’s championship match. Mondy and Ball are both play-
ing professional golf now, and Lawrence reached the semifinals
of the U.S. Amateur in 2017. Utley handed Lawrence one of his
three match play losses, defeating Lawrence in the 2014 quar-
terfinals.
Player rankings event champions in field
Outside of VSGA and USGA championships, players can
compile player rankings points by performing well in non-
VSGA player rankings events around the state. Four players in
the field have victories in the regular division of those events
this year.
Connor Burgess (Boonsboro CC): Won the Kenridge Invi-
tational at Farmington Country Club against a field full of
strong college players.
Jon Hurst (Fredericksburg CC): Won the Greene Hills
Invitational in April.
Daryl Chappell (CC of Petersburg): Claimed the title at
The Signature at The Federal Club in April. Will that
event carry over to the Amateur on the same course?
Joey Jordan (Willow Oaks CC): Won the Cannon Cup at
Spring Creek by three shots over Spring Creek member
Ryan Muthiora.
Age extremes
Kelly Chinn (Army Navy CC): Chinn, who won the VHSL’s
6A individual title last fall, turned 15 in May.
Jeff Johns (Dominion Valley CC): At 67, Johns is the lone
super senior in the field. He’s tied for fifth in the VSGA
Super Senior Player Rankings.
