Pentecost Sunday "He breathed on them and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'" What did the disciples think at this moment? They had witnessed a lot of astonishing things in their time with Christ: healing the sick, multiplying the loaves and fishes, turning water into wine, walking

on water, and now the Lord's resurrection from the dead, among other things. But Jesus had never breathed on them before. And in

this case, nothing dramatic seemed to take place. Perhaps the disciples wondered if anything had actually happened. Jesus spoke

about the Holy Spirit, but other than the breeze from his breath, they didn't experience anything unusual.

Until Pentecost. Then, the wind changed. "Suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind," the first reading

tells us. Now the drama unfolded as the Holy Spirit was revealed in "tongues as of fire," and the once fearful disciples began to proclaim

the Gospel with courage and conviction. Clearly, something had happened when Jesus gave the gift of the Holy Spirit to his disciples. But they didn't really put the gift to use until later, "When the time

for Pentecost was fulfilled." What gifts have we received that we haven't put to use? What graces lay dormant in our souls? At baptism, we receive the Holy

Spirit and at confirmation, the gifts and fruits of the Spirit are given to us in their fullness. These sacraments are like receiving the breath

of Christ. But have we experienced our own personal Pentecost? Have we allowed these supernatural gifts to rise to the surface of our lives? On this anniversary of the Holy Spirit's arrival, may we follow

St. Paul's advice and "stir into flame the gift of God that you have" (2 Tm 1:6).

The Pastor’s Page

PLEASE REMEMBER THEM Please pray for the priests and deacons who have served the Diocese of Gary so faithfully and whose anniversaries of death are this week:

June 9: Rev. Louis F. Bozik (1959) June 10: Deacon Melvin Clark (2004) June 13: Rev. Joseph N. Panavas (1993)

ON THE LIGHTER SIDE A bear approached a trapper in the woods and asked what he was looking for. “I’m after a nice fur coat for myself,” the trapper said. “How about you?” “I’d like a nice breakfast. I tell you what, let’s go into the cave and discuss it.” They went into the bear’s cave and everything worked out. In a half hour the bear had his breakfast and the trapper was in a nice fur coat!

WHO DAT? Well, that would be the seminarian from the Diocese of Gary who is spending the summer at our parish: Gregory Bim-Merle. Gregory hails from “the other end” of our diocese, Michigan City. I asked him to write a little bit of himself so that you could get to know him:

My name is Gregory Bim-Merle. I am a seminarian of the Diocese of Gary and I am looking forward to spending the summer here at St. Thomas More Parish. I am from Michigan City, and my home parish is St. Joseph in LaPorte, IN. I just completed my first year of Theological study at Mundelein Seminary and previously I studied Philosophy for four years at Immaculate Heart of Mary Seminary in Winona, MN.

You will be seeing a lot of Gregory as he will be involved in as many aspects of our parish as he can get into this summer. Some of the activities that he will participate in include daily Masses, our annual parish festival, Vacation Bible School, visiting the sick and shut-ins, wake services, funerals, weddings, and a host of other things. If you have the time and see him around, stop and welcome him to our parish. Also, kindly keep him — and all our seminarians — in your prayers that he may have the grace to persevere in his vocation. Pray, as well, for an increase in vocations to the priesthood, diaconate, and religious life.

SOON TO BE HERE! St. Thomas More Parish announces the 23rd Anniversary of Lake County’s Premier Festival, providing the best in food, fun, rides and live bands for all ages to enjoy: the St. Thomas More Fun Days Festival, June 18th through June 22nd. Browse the midway, enjoy the live bands in the main tent, nibble your way through the food vendor area or purchase a MegaPass for unlimited rides. MegaPass pre-sale is $50 through June 13th and offers unlimited rides for all 5 days of the fest. The MegaPass can be purchased during the Fest for $60. A beer tent, bingo, and a $15,000 cash raffle provide entertainment for the adults and childrens’ games and a large midway of carnival rides keep the younger crowd, of any age, happy. The food court features OVER 20 local favorite festival vendors with selections for dinner, desserts, beverages, and snacks. Everything for a fun family outing. FESTIVAL TIMES: Wednesday and Thursday, 6:00 to 11:00 p.m. Friday, 5:00 p.m. to Midnight Saturday 2:00 p.m. to Midnight Sunday 1:00 to 10:00 p.m. You might notice that the festival is starting a little earlier a couple of days. One of the days has been requested for over the past few years: Sunday. Many people have said that they wished the festival opened earlier so that the food vendors would be ready to serve lunch. Your wish is our command! Come to the Noon Mass and then hit the property for lunch and some early entertainment (bands or rides) on Sunday afternoon. You will also have the benefit of having some of the prime parking spots since you would have parked for Mass. You can’t beat that! Some of the food that you have to look forward includes: STM Ushers & Knights Sweet Corn, Smokey’s Rollin’ Chicago Hotdogs, Shish-Ka-Bobs & Empanadas, Rocki’s Shake Em Ups Lemonade, Pulled Pork & Grilled BBQ Ribs, Puerto Rican Rice & Churros, Nina’s Pierogi & Stuffed Cabbage, Italian Beef, Sausage, & Meatball Sandwiches, Hot Wings with Sauces & Chips, Homemade Elephant Ears, Flavored Shaved Ices, Hand Dipped Corn Dogs, Funnel Cakes & Giant Pork Tenderloins, Fried Oreos - Milky Ways - Twinkies, Fahrenheit 212 Cheeseburgers, Fresh Hand Cut Fried Veggies, Hot Pretzels & Ribbon French Fries, Freddy’s Poor Boys Sandwiches, Flavored ICEE, Festival Curly Sweet Potato Fries, Egg Rolls & Crab Rangoon, Edwardo’s Special Pizza Slices, Dairy Belle Ice Cream Waffle Cones, Chocolate Covered Bananas & Strawberries, Tacos & Nachos with Cheese, and Mexican Grill Specialties. Most of his priesthood has been in parish work. He currently

lives and works at St. Peter’s Church in the Loop with young adults and with

those in the second half of life groups. A man who evangelizes, loves to sing, tell stories

and thrives on celebrating the sacraments. Come, pray and sing as we reflect on

St. Benedict, his Rule and teachings on a balanced life.

You Did It for Me In just a matter of months, two-year-old twins in the Ethiopian

village of Gubeta went from listless to lively. Their mother, Ganet, used to search their village for something to feed them, often in vain. Now, with the support of CRS, she’s able to cook

a nutritious corn-soy porridge, transforming her once undernourished twins. “With the porridge I can cook quickly, and

the twins are off and playing,” she says.

My Two Cents Thoughts on Living Stewardship

Pentecost Sunday Saint Paul talks about the “different kinds of spiritual gifts” and

different forms of service, but the same Lord.” (1 Cor. 12:4). Yet spiritual gifts and service can be mismatched.

Our spiritual lives are enriched when our service matches our abilities, and our service then is adding new strength to our

parish community.
