WINTER 2018 Semester Dates Tuesday, January 2 – Friday, April 13

Dear JCC Members and Friends,

Welcome to the Jewish Community Center of Stamford. Over the last three months I have had the pleasure getting to know our JCC — the programs, the staff and our community. We are a place of warmth and personal connection, a community of communities, a place that provides something

for everyone and can be everything to those that need us. We aim to provide the best experience for our participants. A place where you can de-stress and enjoy all The J has to offer.

Recently we asked you to take part in a survey so that we can improve The J to fit your current needs. Over the next few months we will be implementing those changes, but you already may have seen some of these improvements take effect. Our J needs to evolve as our community continues to evolve around us; thus we must continuously ask for your feedback and take action when you share it. Please know that we appreciate your willingness to communicate and ask that you continue to share ways we can provide an even better experience at The J. Please always feel encouraged to email me at [email protected] or call me at 203.487.0900 with your feedback and suggestions.

As you review the contents of this Program Guide I challenge you to try something new. Look beyond what you know us for, whether it be an Early Learning Center, a Basketball League or a café, and experience something new. Volunteer in our newly-formed J•Cares Committee, begin a new training regimen at the gym, or attend our upcoming Israeli Film Series. The theme for 2018 is innovation and improvement. We are a pool, a fitness center, a camp and so much more. We are a place of constant learning and new experiences. I look forward to continuing to get to know our vibrant community and look forward to seeing you around The J!

2 Winter Semester 2018 at the Stamford JCC • 1035 Newfield Avenue, Stamford, CT 06905 • 203.322.7900 • stamfordjcc.org

Jason Samuel came to the JCC a year ago, bringing with him more than two decades of experience in the camp world. From his start as a counselor-in-training at the New Haven JCC, Jason has risen to prominence in the camp industry, leading both day and resident camps in Connecticut, New York, and New Jersey. He is recognized for his contributions to the American Camp Association, where he is a past section board member, and currently serves as a chair for the annual Tri-State Camp Conference, the largest gathering of camp professionals in the world.

As Director of Day Camps@The J, Jason brings his passion for the camp experience and youth development to all aspects of camp planning and implementation here at the Stamford JCC.

He believes that day camp should offer modern and innovative programs that keep campers of all ages engaged, learning new skills and discovering their own talents. “The summer day camp experience plays a vital role in your child’s year-round education. The unique environment at

Day Camps@The J not only gives campers the opportunity to learn tangible skills like art and sports, but also life skills and emotional intelligence.”

This philosophy is reflected in all of the JCC’s summer camps for children, ages two years through tenth grade. As children participate in activities together they learn critical thinking, problem solving and how to work as a team.

Another vital part of the Day Camps@The J curriculum is helping campers learn how to make friends. “This is a life skill that helps children succeed in school and in the workplace, and is crucial to forming meaningful relationships. At Day Camps@The J children learn to navigate this valuable part of the learning and maturing process in an encouraging, safe and supportive environment.”

Jason’s philosophy of helping children succeed informs not just curriculum, but also staffing decisions. “I believe that our staff is what really makes the camp experience for children. We take great pride in hiring passionate, caring and responsible role models.”

As Jason plans for his second summer as director of Day Camps@The J, his themes are great leadership, dynamic programming, instilling social intelligence, and preparing children for success as adults.

Registration for summer 2018 at Day Camps@The J is ongoing. Contact Jason Samuel at [email protected] or 203-487-0973, or visit stamfordjcc.org for rates and information.

Fostering social and

emotional development

in the youngest children

From the ages of 12 to 18 months, when children are in a period of tremendous social and emotional growth, it is critical to introduce them to new playmates and situations that foster their social and emotional development. During this time of exploration and discovery they are learning how to play, communicate their needs, negotiate with others and share.

Young children enjoy the attention of new, caring adults, and they are eager learners in social situations. Interacting with adults and other children moves them along on their developmental trajectory, fostering emotional and brain development.

Even before it’s time to start preschool, the JCC Sara Walker Nursery School offers many opportunities for the youngest children and their families to connect with others and explore new environments and experiences. From Mommy & Me classes to our Terrific Tots drop-off program, we welcome you and your children to learn and grow with us!

Swim Assessment for New Swimmers For all children enrolling in a swim program for the first time, we strongly encourage you to bring your child to the JCC for a free assessment. Swim School at The J!Ages 3 – 5 Where young children get a head start on swimming, gain confidence in the water and begin working on basic swimming skills, while interacting with an instructor and other children in a fun and safe environment.Through our comprehensive curriculum children will learn skills, build knowledge, gain confidence and feel safe in and around water. Using a step-by-step approach to learning, students will build proficiency as they successfully progress through levels that teach the four essential strokes: freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke and butterfly. Most importantly, our curriculum is built in such a way that children will be excited to advance through each level.

Every swimmer will receive a certificate in which he or she will be able to see the specific skills needed to progress to the next level. Swimmers will also be awarded a new color of swim cap as they progress through each level. Each semester ends with a free swim competition.

NEW! Learn to Code with Scratch Jr® Grades 1 – 3 Scratch Jr® was designed for younger children as a precursor to other programming languages. Students control how their characters look and move; add sounds and images; and then use the programming blocks to bring their characters to life. Students create and express themselves with the computer, rather than just interact with software created by others. They also learn to think sequentially, explore cause and effect, and develop problem-solving skills.

This is a fun way to be introduced to programming.

This belief helps make us a strong and supportive community and upholds the Jewish — and universal — values of welcoming guests, kindness, respect, and communal responsibility. Individual differences are to be celebrated and can only further enrich the JCC community.

We are encouraging those with special needs to participate in various programs, whether within our traditional classes or in our specialized programs. If you wish to join any class or program, please contact Liza Fahey at 203.487.0946 or [email protected] to discuss the details of what the class or program offers and if it is a good fit for you and your child’s needs and abilities.

Inclusion Classes for the Fall Semester

NEW! Exploring Science Through Our SENSES Ages 3 – 5 Messy play is a key component to developing children’s fine and gross motor and coordination skills. Through the children’s seven senses we will explore different ways to help them learn and grow. We will be creating and working with different textures and materials each week. Whether it’s making Play-Doh, calming bottles, or gooey slime, the children will have fun experiencing their seven senses — taste, smell, sight, touch, hearing, vestibular (balance), proprioceptive (joint movements) — in their own way. To register, contact Hannah Goldstone at 203.487.0980 or [email protected].

Tuesdays, 4:30 – 5:15 p.m. Jan. 16 – Mar. 20 (No class Jan. 30, Feb. 20) Member $160 / Community $200 (8 sessions)

NEW! Ready, Set, Move Ages 5 – 8 Does your child like climbing and jumping through obstacle courses? This class will allow children to engage their muscles by moving through obstacle courses and yoga positions. Classes will focus on balance, coordination, core engagement and strength, to increase fine and gross motor skills. To register, contact Hannah Goldstone at 203.487.0980 or [email protected].

Wednesdays, 4:30 – 5 p.m. Jan. 10 – Mar. 14 Member $150 / Community $200 (10 sessions)
