It’s the foundation of the Freedom Celebration at the Buffalo Chip: Showing honor and respect for

the sacrifice so many have made to maintain our freedom and democ-racy. The tradition continues in 2017 as the Buffalo Chip again sets aside a day to honor all who have served our nation.

The Sturgis Buffalo Chip Freedom Celebration, presented by Black Rifle Coffee Company, takes place today, Thursday, August 10th. It’s a full day of riding and events that begins with a street party in Spearfish, SD, followed by a ride through the Black Hills and reception at the Buffalo Chip Cross-Roads. Evening entertainment in the Chip amphitheater includes a cel-ebration on the main stage with the Bob Hanson Distinguished Service Awards, an event that’s especially poi-gnant this year as we note Hanson’s passing (see sidebar.) The celebra-tion culminates with performances by George Thorogood and blink-182.

As an extension of the Chip’s Free-dom Celebration, the fourth annual

Some parts of being a daredevil are tougher than others. The photo shoots with beautiful

women? Pretty cool. Defying death by jumping over a pit of rattlesnakes on Evel Knievel’s XR750? That’s something else altogether.

But for Doug Senecal, a.k.a. Doug Danger, that’s exactly what happens today, Thursday, August 10th, at 5:00 p.m. in the Chip amphitheater, a re-creation of Knievel’s first public jump. Knievel staged the stunt for publicity at his Honda dealership in Moses Lake, Washington in 1965 but it didn’t go well: he clipped the edge of the box on landing and the snakes got out!

But Danger is cool with it, as we learned when we sat down to chat.

Q: It’s great to have you back at the Buffalo Chip. Remind us of your last jump here.

A: It was two years ago, a world record. I jumped 22 cars using my hero’s motorcycle, Evel Knievel. He had tried to do this jump but came up short. I looked at it not as doing something he didn’t but as finishing something he started. Now he and I hold a world record together.

Q: How did Evel inspire you?A: My whole life has been what it is because

of Evel Knievel. I started jumping because I saw him do it. To me Evel was the coolest guy in the world. But I never thought in my lifetime I’d be jumping Evel Knievel’s motorcycle, the motor-cycle that I saw on TV all those years ago. And breaking world records on it.

Q: You knew him, right?A: Yes, I was proud to call him my friend. One

time I saw Evel in Toronto where I was doing a show and, like he always did, I said a few words to the kids before I jumped. I always talk about wearing helmets and staying away from drugs. He told me after the show: ‘I’m so proud of you. You’re the only guy doing that, talking to peo-ple.’

He felt the same way I do: that God put us on this stage to try to make the world better. When you’re in the spotlight part of your responsibility is to help other people.

Q: What’s the toughest part of this jump?A: The most challenging part is doing it on

Evel’s bike, flying a heavy Harley-Davidson motorcycle 110 to 120 feet thru the air. This isn’t

a dirt bike, it’s a 350-pound bike that was never meant to leave the ground. It only has two and a half to three inches of travel in the suspension.

Q: What’s the effect of those factors?A: Even if I land it perfectly it’s an explosion.

I call it a controlled crash. It looks smooth but I have pictures from the last jump that show my arm bent back trying to control it. Anytime you take a Harley 35-40 feet in the air and try to land it, it’s a challenging task.

Q: Any particular concerns?A: Where the Chip’s runway comes under the

bridge, it starts getting pretty tight. When you’re doing 70-75 coming into a tight area things feel like they’re flying by a lot faster. There are obsta-cles near the landing ramp, too.

And the bike, a 1972, has drum brakes that aren’t very good. If I’m 200 feet in front of the ramp and something goes wrong I still have to go. You hit a point of no return. Then it’s just: hang on.

Q: How will you know it’s safe to go?A: The things I’m looking at before I go are for

the speedometer to get up to 73-74 mph and get-ting the tire perfectly lined up. And I hope like hell someone’s recently fed the rattlesnakes! If I land it, I’ll be getting a new pair of rattlesnake boots. If not, I’ll wind up being lunch for rattle-snakes – they’ll get a big meal!

Q: Why should people come out to see this?A: People will be talking about the rattlesnake

jump for a long time. You’ll want to say you were there when it happened. Plus, the party at the Buffalo Chip is the only real party in town. To me it’s Woodstock all over again!

Listen: you get to watch Doug Danger do a world record jump then kick back, have a few beers, and listen to George Thorogood and blink-182. And I’m gonna be right there party-ing with everyone – I hope!

Be in the Chip amphitheater Thursday, August 10 for Doug Danger’s World Record Rattlesnake Jump. Chip campers are covered. Day passes for the jump including blink-182 and George Tho-rogood available at the box office or online.

Freedom Celebration Ride allows participants to honor America’s veterans and contribute to char-ities that assist wounded vets and their families. One hundred percent of the $75 ride donation benefits the Warrior Dog Foundation, Combat Wounded Coalition and America’s Mighty War-riors.

In addition to official Freedom Celebration events, you have the opportunity throughout the Rally to honor those who have served by tak-

ing part in the nightly military toast on the PBR Roadhouse Deck, visiting the Field of Flags and AVTT Veterans Memorial Wall at the Cross-Roads, and purchasing an official Buffalo Chip Red Shirt to benefit the three military charities the Freedom Celebration supports.

We’ve all seen the bumper stickers and blurbs designed to stir the patriotic soul. Many are heartfelt, some are merely designed to persuade. The fact is, where patriotism is concerned it’s not words, but actions, that count. Join us at the Freedom Celebration today.

A shining symbol of courage and persever-ance, WWII POW and veteran Bob Han-son was on-stage for the Freedom Celebra-

tion the last several years, wearing his still-fitting 15th Horse Cavalry Army uniform, a fact he was quite proud of. Sadly, he is not with us this year; Hanson arrived at his final resting place in Black Hills National Cemetery on January 30, 2017, aged 98 years.

But he is not forgotten. Hanson’s legacy was secured in 2014 when the Sturgis Buffalo Chip instituted the Bob Hanson Distinguished Service Awards conferred to honor courage, sacrifice and heroism, as part of the annual Freedom Celebra-tion and Ride. These awards provide an opportu-nity for the motorcycle community to honor those whose courage and sacrifices go way beyond words. People like Bob.

No elaborate scheme was in place to honor Hanson at his passing. Perhaps the best way to ensure his legacy is to ensure the continuity of his namesake awards. If you agree, reach out to [email protected].

None of us is truly gone until there’s no one left who remembers us. Let’s make sure Bob Hanson is remembered.

Everyone knows the best bands play at the Buffalo Chip. It’s been that way for decades. But it’s not just the legend of

the place, or the feeling of being part of the crowd in a moment that’s epic and unrepeat-able – though all that’s totally cool. If you think the sound quality and light show on the Wolfman Jack Stage is better this year, you’re right.

According to the Chip’s stage manager Steve Owen, they have a new, state-of-the-art PA system—manufactured by industry leader L-Acoustics—and an intelligent light system. Both are enhancing the experience for con-cert-goers. “You won’t find a venue anywhere in the state that has better quality produc-tion,” said Owen.

“It’s the best gear in the world, developed by a physicist,” said Rusty Gage, the Chip’s front of house sound engineer. “He designed it because as a music fan, he was tired of going to concerts and the music sounding like crap. L-Acoustics is the best gear in the world.”

Added Gage, “We bring in bands that have

very good engineers and they deserve to have good equipment to work with so their bands can sound their very best. It won’t be the fault of the PA if they don’t.”

This means that everyone who’s at the show gets the optimal concert experience. The bands sounds the way fans expect them to sound. And the new moving, intelligent light system amps up the atmo-sphere for an even more awesome event.

The Chip’s prior system was also very good so the distinction may not be appar-ent to the untrained listener. But along with partying with thousands of your best buds at the largest music festival in motorcycling, it’s just one more thing that makes concerts at the Buffalo Chip better than concerts anywhere else.

How does it compare to other rally ven-ues? “You have a pecking order of speaker manufacturers in pro audio. At the very top, sitting all by itself, is L-Acoustics,” said Gage. And in the Black Hills, it’s only at the Buffalo Chip.

Now concerts are even betterSuPerior light and Sound at the chiP

That takes effort and it’s only proper to give credit where it’s due. Party on!

No matter how much a cross-country road trip beckons, it’s not always feasible. Enter companies such as Daily Direct/Haul Bikes

and A&S Kinard that can pitch in to make your road trip dreams become reality.

These two firms stepped up to transport all of the dynamic custom bikes in the Buffalo Chip’s Motor-cycles As Art exhibition again this year. They can help you, too, when you want to ride your own bike at the rally but can’t afford the time to pilot it there yourself.

A&S Kinard’s “Sturgis Express” is an east-coast-to-Sturgis service that gets your bike to the Buffalo Chip and back home again with ease. The company is owned and run by people who ride. In fact, they bring their own bikes out for the rally! In addition to transporting motorcycles safely and securely, A&S Kinard can move display materials for vendors and general freight as well. They service the entire coun-try and are proud of their reasonable rates.

DailyDirect/Haul Bikes, a longtime provider in the motorcycle hauling business, moves motorcycles – and only motorcycles - for dozens of custom build-

ers you know. It’s their exclusive business and they’re passionate pros. They work with several top-name auction companies, a sure sign of their expertise and reliability.

Their 54 specifically-configured vehicles have two levels inside and lift gates—and their drivers are spe-cially trained. Better yet, many of them are riders, too, so they care for your bike like it was their own. They cover the entire country with very few excep-tions. That’s what a rally like Sturgis is about; the chance to experience riding in the wide-open spaces of the American west. Don’t let time restrictions hold you back.

SHIP TO THE CHIPthe Solution to the beSt vacation ever

When the gate was rolled aside 36 years ago to allow a few bikers to camp on prairie land east of town after they’d

been tossed out of Sturgis City Park, a tradition was born. Rod Woodruff didn’t know it at the time but he significantly changed the Sturgis rally by creating what became the Buffalo Chip.

Woodruff received the J.C. “Pappy” Hoel Award from the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame in a ceremony Wednesday, August 9th. The award is conferred on individuals whose work has particularly impacted the Sturgis Rally in a positive way.

Over the decades, Woodruff has booked the biggest bands in a variety of musical genres at the Chip while hosting eclectic activities and signa-ture rides that have been a boon to local and state charitable organizations. His efforts have brought international attention to the rally through persis-tent, focused promotions that netted Travel, Dis-covery and CMT channel specials, among others.

But even more impactful, Woodruff has built a loyal community of campers that have become friends—with the Chip family and with each other. Many come home to the Buffalo Chip every

year and have done so for decades. That’s the kind of positive significance that can’t be justly quanti-fied. It’s simply authentic.

Congratulations, Woody, and much deserved! The Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of

Fame is open year-round on 999 Main Street in Sturgis. Stop in to learn about the people and machines that trace the path of motorcycle history.

Meri Remick, Rod’s first wife and Toni and Daymon Woodruff’s mother, works year-round at her job in Washington state. Around Chip time, Meri works remotely to organize and set-up her department, and later flies out to be a part of the family team who runs the Chip during the rally.

Q: What is your official job position at the Chip?A: I’m the Bar Office Administrator. I hire all

the bar office personnel and bartenders. My title has changed a few times, but that’s the basics.

Q: What has been your favorite concert through the years?

A: Billy Idol. Oh, and the James Gang. They hadn’t been together in 18 years, but they did a special tour that year.

Before I started working here, the first concert I went to was Johnny Lang. He’s a blues rocker, Cher’s little protégé, and, at the time, a 16-year-old kid from North Dakota.

Q: Do you have a greatest Chip experience?A: Some of the early times, when I was start-

ing to work with Mary and friends. It was still a young Buffalo Chip. We didn’t have very many amenities or a bar office. We had a lot of fun bar-tending.

For me, it’s the gathering of friends and family. Being able to have fun while working. It’s a time for reunion and a chance to reconnect.

Q: What’s a special moment you’ve had at the Chip?

A: Paul Revere and the Raiders was Woody’s favorite band in high school. They got popular in the 60’s. He got them to play out here one year. It was a blast from the past, and he even wanted them to sign his album. He was so full of energy, and he got Carol and I to go out and watch the concert with him. At the end, we got to meet them. It made us feel young again.

Q: How many years have you been working here?A: Since 2001. This is my 16th year. The first

year I was here, Woody was short on help and I had time off, so I worked alongside Carol in the ticket office. The next year, he had nobody to run to the bar office, so I took it over.

Q: How has your job changed since earlier years?A: In the beginning, there was no office. We

had to clean out an old dusty trailer and orga-nize everything. When that trailer got claimed, we ended up having to move around year after year until we had a sound location.

To start, we had a total of 8 bartenders, myself

and one other office staff member. That’s all we had. By the time the 75th rolled around we had 105 bartenders plus more office staff to make a grand total of 150 department members. During rally, we’re the biggest operation with the larg-est crew.

Q: What is it like to work alongside two kids and a grandkid?

A: It’s fun! It’s definitely not the way I imag-ined we would connect as a family. This all started as a hobby Woody had. It’s tiring sometimes, but the fact that we all get to be together makes it worth it. We get to share good memories, and we laugh through the not-so-good times. It’s a place to gather.

Q: Why do you keep coming back to the Chip?A: Family. It’s hard working remotely from

Washington, and I get stressed out. But, in the end, I want to be out there with everyone. When I retire in a year and a half I’ll have more freedom and flexibility to go out there.

Working at the Chip has its challenges, but they’re what we need to learn and grow. Espe-cially as we get older; it’s important to keep our minds busy, keep learning, be creative and have fun. It’s all part of being human.

We need to ride free and take risks, like Woody says. Ride free in life, too, even if it’s not on a motorcycle.

This ain’t no video game. It’s not virtual reality, either, dude. In fact, it’s not “virtual” anything. When you throw a leg over a race bike, strap on your helmet and

fire up, you’re in for an experience that doesn’t get any more tac-tile, any more physical, any more real.

Those assembled in the Buffalo Chip amphitheater yesterday had an immersive, legit experience as the Street Drag Invitation-als with Crazy John and RSD Super Hooligan Races played out. Who won and who didn’t pales when compared to just being there to soak up the sights, sounds and scents. These racers and spectators weren’t watching life on screens, they were living it in straight up, three-dimensional reality.

Story lines abounded: Triumph-riding 48-year-old Joe Kopp proved old guys rule when he not only won the Super Hooligan Main but also took the Dunlop Dash For Cash and the Hole-shot award. A woman on a mini-bike tortoised her way around the track to win over the hares in the Run Whatcha Brung class. And John Shope was totally psyched to take third in the ama-teur class.

Yes, the racers felt the rush most immediately but the energy was palpable to observers, too, as grunty rumble shook chests and acrid smoke filled lungs. The riders pushed their limits as far as they dared and the day coalesced into a happening that’s one for the books. Man, that was an epic day!

There’s just no substitute for real.

Look here each day to find details on an historic marker that stakes a claim to Wild West heritage and American pioneer pride in these here Black Hills. Then go find it and create your own legendary experience.

North of Badlands National Park at the edge of the Cheyenne River Reservation, the town of Faith is a proud cow town on the Fox Ridge Divide. Native Americans, led by Puts on his Shoes and Iron Lightning, met the incoming settlers when Faith was opened to homesteaders in 1890. The first train came to town in 1911 and Faith became a vital and bustling shipping point for livestock on the Milwaukee Railroad System.

It’s also the discovery site of the largest dino-saur fossil ever found, a T-Rex named Sue, now a permanent part of the Field Museum in Chicago. And if you’re in no hurry to leave, the annual Faith Stock Show and Rodeo happens this weekend, so maybe you oughta stick around.

If you missed yesterday’s tip about “The Reve-nant” Hugh Glass near Lemmon, SD, it’s less than 60 miles north of today’s suggested ride, further up Highway 73.

Location: the intersection of US Hwy 212 and SD Hwy 73.

To find your own wild frontier we suggest you visit Waymarking.com and search South Dakota Historical Markers. GPS coordinates also available there.

brawl at the buffalo

Moto mayhem ensued when the first ever Brawl at the Buffalo stunt competition, populated by the Dual-igans, invaded the Buffalo Chip CrossRoads yester-

day. Who are the Dualigans? Club members say: “It’s the worst club on the face of the earth.” “We’re gonna pee in your beer mug and make fun of you.” “The best part of growing up is not – and that’s what the Dualigans is.”

Whether that clarifies things or not, you can count on this: The Dualigans have straight up fun on motorcycles. Twenty daredevil stunt riders signed up to compete and the talent pool was outstanding. Judges included Carey Hart, Leticia Cline, Suicide Machine’s Aaron Guardado and Big B. First place win-ner Tall Boy took home $1500 – though this crowd likely runs a bar tab well over that amount in an afternoon. Watch for video soon on www.BuffaloChip.com.

The Buffalo Chip and Indian Motorcycle are two great things that are even better together. That’s been apparent all week

and it kicked off early as hundreds of Indian own-ers arrived Sunday for their own private party and viewing deck for the inaugural AFT Buffalo Chip TT. It was extra cool when Indian factory rider Jared Mees took second in the Twins Final.

An Indian streamliner that’s headed for the famed Bonneville Salt Flats to commemorate Burt Munro’s epic run was unveiled in the Chip gar-

dens. Riders from the Veteran’s Charity Ride were hosted another day. Bike owners rolling into the CrossRoads took Indian loaners out for test rides when they had work done on their own bikes at the Buffalo Chip Garage. What a bonus!

RSD Super Hooligan Racing presented by Indian Motorcycle took over the Chip amphithe-ater on Wednesday. The racing included a battle between two Scout Sixtys customized by Carey Hart and Roland Sands—bikes that were given away on the Wolfman Jack Stage later that evening.

Continuing the daily interviews with women whose work is featured in Motorcycles As Art, the custom bike exhibition at the Buf-

falo Chip Event Center, here’s Jody Perewitz of Perewitz Cyle Fab. Read about how she brings her energy and vigor for bike building to the table.

Q: Introduce yourself; where you are living?A: Jody Perewitz. A small town in beautiful Mas-

sachusetts, Halifax.  Q: How old are you and how long have you been

working on bikes?A: Under 35! I have been in the motorcycle

industry since the day I was born! I personally don’t make bikes faster/better/cus-

tomized, but we do that as a team at Perewitz Cycle Fab. I have been part of this team for a long time. DP, my dad, said I had to finish college before I could work full time for him, so I did just that and it’s been history since.

Q: How did you get into building/customizing

bikes? A: Born into it! Watching my dad do what he

does. Q: What type of bike are you presenting for the

exhibit and why did you choose it? A: I am restoring/customizing a 1965 Harley-

Davidson Scat. I have had this cool little bike for a long time. It has been sitting in my garage just wait-ing for the perfect opportunity to be brought back to life! I am really excited about this bike because it will be so different in so many aspects.

Q: What’s the coolest part of the bike?A: That most people don’t even know what a

Harley-Davidson Scat is!

Q: What was the toughest part of this project? A: Telling DP this is MY project! And that I am

working with a motorcycle that hasn’t run in at least 25 years!

Q: If you think your generation is, or will be chang-ing the motorcycle industry, can you tell us what this looks like to you?

A: I think every generation changes the motor-cycle industry. Unfortunately, I think our genera-tion is split… there are the guys who do the bag-

ger thing… and the guys who do the smaller FXR, Sportster-like bikes. I personally hope that the smaller bikes hold ground. Touring motorcycles will always be popular because they are good for trips or passengers but FXRs are way more fun!

See Jody’s cus-tomized 1965 Harley-Davidson Scat and the work of three-dozen other builders under 35 at the Motorcycles As Art exhibition in the Buffalo Chip Event Center, open daily, 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Enter at the Chip’s east gate; admission is free.

If your way to or from the Sturgis Rally takes you inside the borders of Kansas, you’ll want to plan a stop at the new Evel Knievel Museum

in Topeka. It’s the ultimate collection of the leg-endary daredevil’s authentic artifacts.

This world-class facility contains the most com-plete Evel Knievel collection in the world includ-ing actual leathers, helmets, and hidden-cache canes, X-rays showing the metal pins that held Evel together, and rare, never-before-seen jump video and photos.

And that’s just the beginning. Put on the virtual reality goggles and headset

for an immersive jump experience, complete with rushing wind and rumbling impact. Giant touch screens target Knievel’s broken bones, connect-ing injuries to the jumps that caused them with video of the actual events. The “Plan A Jump” wall allows four players to choose bike, wardrobe and obstacles, plus speed, ramp angle and distance before launching. Crash or succeed, no visitors are harmed in the playing of this game!

View clips of Evel’s Hollywood stints in a 1970’s-era movie theatre complete with marquee, and see Evel’s own jump bikes—motorcycles that sometimes vaulted him toward horrific crashes such as those at Wembley Stadium and Caesar’s Palace. See the X-2 Sky Cycle Evel launched at Snake River, perched on the actual ramp and installed over dirt brought in from the location. Peek inside “Big Red,” Evel’s traveling Mack rig and dressing room, resplendent in red, white & blue metalflake vinyl in the original stars and stripes motif.

Promising the thrill of a lifetime, the Evel Knievel Museum is unparalleled in scope and depth. It’s a fitting tribute to confidence, indi-vidualism and epic courage—characteristics that describe the bold life of Evel Knievel. It’s the sin-gular showcase of genuine artifacts belonging to the most legendary, death-defying daredevil of all time.

Features of the Evel Knievel Museum Include:• The bikes that launched a legend: Evel’s actual

motorcycles• His genuine leathers and helmets• Fully-restored Mack Truck Rig “Big Red” –

Fans came in droves for the most off-the-hook concert of the rally—and Sir Ozzy Osbourne delivered. Returning to the Buffalo Chip for the first time since 2010, Ozzy — recently reunited with guitarist Zakk Wylde—proved both his longevity and his reach by breaking barriers to connect with the Chip crowd. Engines revved in raucous appreciation, showing definitively that The End is nowhere near for the Godfather of Heavy Metal.

Refocused both personally and professionally, Pop Evel’s commitment to a more positive persona was evident on the Wolfman Jack Stage last night (right). The band took solid footsteps playing to an appreciative rally crowd.
