A LETTER FROM

HARRY HORGANShake-A-Leg is a unique

jewel in the crown that is

the real Miami. Regardless

of ability to pay, we have

unfailingly served the

community.

Twenty-fi e years ago, Shake-A-Leg Miami

entered into a partnership with the City

of Miami to convert the historic US Coast

Guard Seaplane Base into Miami’s premier

community watersports center. Together

we have created the community gateway

to Biscayne Bay and beyond. Our Mission is

to use the marine environment to improve

the health, education and independence

of adults and children with disabilities, as

well as disadvantaged youth and their

families. In a country where the average

not-for-profit organization has a life-span

of less than four years, we are especially

proud of our quarter century of service to

this diverse community. Lives have been

changed, individuals have achieved levels

of skill and confiden e that they would

never have known and miracles are an

everyday event. Thousands of Miamians

have found freedom in Biscayne Bay.

Working with a variety of organizations and

schools, we have developed programs

which are accessible to youth and people

with disabilities, operating in an inclusive

setting; and with the support from

generous individuals, we serve over 8,000

children and adults annually including

veterans. We use the excitement of

water-sport activities to motivate and

challenge. We use the calming effect of

water to soothe and comfort those

individuals who need a little peace and

tranquility after suffering an incidence of

trauma or loss. We are a place where kids

are helping kids make friends, learn skills

and live a better life.

So if Miami is a water-centric community,

Coconut Grove, the home of Shake-A-Leg

Miami, is the embodiment of its culture,

particularly art, music and design. In short,

Shake-A-Leg Miami is situated in the middle

of Miami’s emerging renaissance.

Shake-A-Leg is a unique jewel in the crown

that is the real Miami. Regardless of ability

to pay, we have unfailingly served the

community. It seems only natural that we

celebrate the value of Miami’s water and

community support with a “nautical” event,

a unique fashion show that celebrates art,

music, design and water. We want you to

be an active and supportive partner of your

premier waterfront destination. This is your

opportunity to celebrate all the good things

that Shake-A-Leg Miami means to our

community. On October 29th, please join us

to celebrate the water world we have cre-

ated and the people who are living a better

life as a result.

Attached please find information on

the event, our sponsors and how you

can participate.

with the City of Miami, served 8,800

children and adults, approximately 34%

with disabilities. Throughout the year,

50,000 guests visited our facility where

84% of them, youth and adults with

disabilities, became active participants of

our programs.

Serving Youth with Special Needs in an inclusive setting:There are limited program opportunities

for youth with disabilities. Shake-A-Leg

of the youth have gone sailing and/or

kayaking and explored the Biscayne Bay

and Eco-Adventure Island. During the

summer program, participants improved

their academic performance by 85%,

physical Fitness by 91%.

Community Service opportunities and jobs for students:This past year, over 550 students and 240

adults served in a mentoring or volunteer

Programs for youth

are held year round in an

inclusive and empowering

Programs for youth withand without disabilities:Students have fun and make friends while

improving academic performance, character

building, life skills and physical fitness.

Programs are held year round, during

school, after school, weekend, vacation,

and summer. Family involvement is an

important component to the program.

Mentoring Training and Volunteering:Programs are designed to educate

students in becoming advocates, working

with special needs populations, teaching

them the importance of water sports.

Youth learn valuable life lessons,

accumulate significant community service

hours and make life-long friendships. Their

experience will assist them with their

college application process.

Disabled Veterans and Adult Programs: Programs are specially designed to be fully

accessible for people with disabilities and

offered in an inclusive environment.

Disabled Veterans’ programs are designed

to serve veterans, their families and the

military community.

Community Water Sports CenterPrograms for all:Programs include group and private

instruction in sailing, boating, paddling,

fishing, group and corporate outings,

community service projects, regattas,

fishing tournaments and more.

Wellness Center:Offering a full service pilates and fitness

studio, seminars and clinics related to

health & wellness promotion complemented

with water sports and community

service activities.

Funding:We raised approximately $1,609,000

through philanthropy, grants and in-kind

sources representing 76% of the budget;

program fees were approximately $489,000

representing 24% of income. Funding

provides services for children and adults

with disabilities who are unable to

contribute financially toward improving

their health, education, independence and

JENS WERNER “It is not just about me

designing. It’s about every

single kid, supporter, sponsor

and influen er who will shape

the event and the kids’ lives.”

“I always knew that not every kid, not

everyone, was born into the same

conditions, the same family and inclusive

environment that I luckily did”.

Since the age of 15 years, Jens has worked

with kids with disabilities. He started with an

initiative called “Kids Helping Kids” where

he took on the challenge of organizing

groups of friends who visited schools

and daycare centers serving kids with

disabilities. Jens and his friends worked

closely with the kids exposing them to

sports. In his adult life, he has continued to

work with kids with special needs.

“With the fashion show we are planning for

Shake-A-Leg Miami, I want to not just

give something back. I want to be part of

something big that is just possible with

combined forces.”

Jens says that it was an amazing experience

to work with handicapped kids. He

comments that you realize how precious

the most selfevident, common-place things

are in life and how unimportant material

things can be.

When a creative non-profit meets a creative

guy, magic happens. That creative guy is

Jens Werner; a European designer at the

highest level.

The Shake-A-Leg Miami 25th Anniversary

Gala will feature a fashion performance

piece of Jens Werner’s creations with a

unique touch. The garments will be made

of recycled sails and the models/actors

themselves, some disabled sailors, will be

elegantly showing off the garments

Jens’ vision and goal for the future is to

make people recognize and appreciate

sport and active wear as fashion. From this

starting point and major inspiration source,

Jens stepped into the sportswear world

at Adidas Y-3 and is now in NYC heading

up the design department of Tory Burch’s

new sports line, Tory Sport.

David McCauley is a mixed media artist

based in Miami, FL. His work incorporates

design, sculpture, typoraphy and the use of

repurposed materials. McCauley’s urban

contemporary artwork is held in prestigious

private collections worldwide and has been

featured internationally in solo and group

exhibitions with such institutions as the

SCOPE Art Show, Galerie Lano (Paris) and

the Projective Space (NYC).

David was drawn to the idea of creating

art on “old sails”. This summer he joined

Shake-A-Leg Miami’s Sister Ship, The

Impossible Dream - a 60ft, wheelchair

accessible catamaran - on her voyage up

the eastern seaboard. McCauley has lined

up artists in every port, inviting them to

create a piece of art utilizing a 36’ x 36’

sail canvas, repurposing a jib that helped

propel the Impossible Dream for tens of

thousands of miles, impacting the lives

of many. The art pieces will be exhibited

October 29th at Shake-A-Leg Miami’s

25th Anniversary Gala where they will be

auctioned off to support the like-minded

missions of these three organizations.

McCauley is the founder of Rise Up Gallery,

a non profit organization based in Miami

which provides pro bono art therapy

workshops to the community and The

Laundromat Art Space, an artist run

collective which provides an artist in

residency program, exhibition space,

innovative curatorial opportunities and

community programming, located in the

heart of little Haiti, Miami.
