In this week's segment...

Jacob Davis Dr. Greg Sawicki

Homeschool: Biomedical Engineering What year of graduate school are youon? 4th year Advisor: Eberhard Voit (BME) and SamBrown (Biology)

What's your research on? I study antibiotic resistance in respiratorypathogens, specifically MRSA(Staphyloccus aureus), Pseudomonasaeruginosa, and Burkholderia

Homeschool: Woodruff School ofMechanical Engineering, School ofBiological Sciences

Lab: Physiology of Wearable Robotics(PoWeR)

What's your research on? The Human Physiology of WearableRobotics (PoWeR) laboratory's goal is tocombine tools from engineering,

cenocepacia. I work with the CysticFibrosis and Airways Disease ResearchCenter (CF-AIR) at Emory and CHOA,using microorganisms recovered frompatients. I am researching whatspecifically allows for antibiotic resistanceand survival of pathogens, includingenzymatic degradation of antibiotics, altered chemical environment, andpresence of non-pathogenicmicroorganisms. I am also creating amodelling framework that will hopefully beable to predict patient response toantibiotic therapies.

At what age did you start graduateschool? 31

What motivated you to attend graduateschool? I've always enjoyed research and learningnew things. I've always had several non-fiction library books checked out, andhave spent hours at a time going downWikipedia rabbit holes. I really couldn'tsee myself doing a job that doesn't allowme to learn new things daily and hopefullycontribute to the world's body ofknowledge

What's something about you that setsyou apart from other grad students? I took a very long path to graduate school. After high school, I didn't have the meansto go to college, so I joined the US Army. Iwas assigned to a small infantry unit on anjoint US-Italian army base in northern Italy.Immediately after arriving, our unit wasdeployed to Afghanistan for just over ayear as part of a large troop surge.

After returning, I learned that the Armyoffered free tuition to active soldiers, so Istarted taking classes at the University of

physiology and neuroscience to discoverneuromechanical principles underpinningoptimal locomotion performance and applythem to develop lower-limb roboticdevices capable of improving both healthyand impaired human locomotion (e.g., forelite athletes, aging baby-boomers, post-stroke community ambulators).

By focusing on the human side of thehuman-machine interface, Sawicki and hisgroup have begun to create a roadmap forthe design of lower-limb roboticexoskeletons that are truly symbiotic---thatis, wearable devices that work seamlesslyin concert with the underlyingphysiological systems to facilitate theemergence of augmented humanlocomotion performance.

At what age did you start graduateschool? 25

What motivated you to attend graduateschool? Curiosity. Desire to figure out how thingswork;)

What is something you believe set youapart from other graduate students? First in family to pursue a PhD.

What is your favorite thing about beingpart of the BioE community? Diversity of science and engineeringexperience and expertise in the cohort.

-----------More about you----------

Where are you from? East Setauket, NY----way out east fromNYC on North Shore of Long Island

Maryland, which had a small satellitecampus on our base. Over the nextseveral years (minus another 6 monthdeployment to Afghanistan), I took classesin person and online until my Armycontract was over.

After I got out of the Army, I was able touse the GI Bill to finish my Bachelor'sdegree in Mechanical Engineering at theage of 30. While doing undergrad, I alsogot married and had a child. So now, whileI learn how to be a professionalresearcher, I also am learning how to be ahusband and a father.

What's your favorite thing about beinga BioE student? For me, I love the collaborative aspect ofBioEngineering, that it brings so manydepartments together. I regularly work withBioE program faculty in my homedepartment, but also in ChemE, Biologyand even Emory faculty. I have also beenable to take classes in BME, ME, ISyE,Biology and even Applied Physiology thatcount towards my degree so I have neverhad to take a class that I didn't findinteresting just because my programrequired it.

-----------More about you----------

What is second on your list for a dreamjob/profession?That's a tough one, since I really do feellike I've found my calling. I would haveprobably been a high school math teacher, and maybe coached soccer on the side.As an undergrad, I did the teacher'straining program and actually did studentteaching.

What are some activities that you dowhen you are not in lab?

What did you want to be growing up? Architect, then Orthopedic Surgeon, thenEngineer

Were you determined to pursueengineering research from an earlyage, or was this a passion/pathway thatyou followed later on? Caught on to engineering in high school

What is second on your list for a dreamjob/profession?brainstormer, or part of a creative designteam

What are some activities you do whenyou are not in lab? run, bike, hike, live music

What is something that you are proudof achieving during your academiccareer? Earning tenure

Has there been any instance ofhardship that has impacted yourschooling? If so, how have youovercome that hardship and how has itshaped your graduate schoolexperience? Never had a huge amount of money to puttoward school. Loans and smallscholarships and family saving for me gotthe job done. Also, my GRE scores werereally low. It kept me from getting into thetop engineering Departments for gradschool. I got to U Mich via Kinesiology andthen designed my own grad degree to getengineering back into the mix.

Since I have a family, I don't really get tochoose my own activities anymore. I'm atthe whim of a 4 year-old, so I play a lot ofboard games and read lots of children'sbooks. I enjoy playing sports when I can,and I play piano and guitar.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? If I could be a BioE student in 10 years(with a much larger stipend!) I would behappy. Having said that, I would like tohave a job where I can do research, eitherat a university or an agency like the NIH orCDC.

-------------Some fun ones--------------

What's the one food you could neverbring yourself to eat? There are a few: mushrooms, olives, pickles. Yuck.

Anything else you would like thereaders to know about your story? I'm really glad I chose the BioE program atGeorgia Tech over the other programs Iconsidered. I have learned so much sinceI've been here, I've had great advising, and I get to participate in meaningfulresearch every day. I hope everyone elsewho goes through the program has thesame great experience I have had.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years? Doing the same thing I am now;) But in amore refined, less stressed out way;)

-------------Some fun ones--------------

What's the one food you could neverbring yourself to eat? Swiss cheese

What is your favorite book/movie/TVseries and why? Tough to pick favorites. I like outdooradventure documentaries. 'Free Solo' is arecent favorite. 'Stand by Me' is also afavorite classic movie. As for books---i liketo read docu-style books on science, nature and philosophy -- a recent favoritesis: 'How to Change Your Mind' by MichaelPollan. "Zen and the Art of MotorcycleMaintenance" by Robert Pirsig is afavorite classic book.

What song motivates you or is yourfavorite song? My favorite music is live music. Myfavorite band is Phish. I like it all, as longas its live;)
