Multiple languages echoing in the nave...

Many thanks go out to all the children and adults who participated in UTO this past Lent. Your generous donations go a long way towards supporting grants that alleviate poverty both domestically and internationally. St. David's raised $927.40.

Thanks to those who augmented Georgia Stokes reading of the lesson from the Acts of the Apostles (Acts 2:1-21) on Pentecost Sunday with simultaneous translation into other languages: Martha Hays Weiss (French), Carlyn Romeyn (Italian), Steve Romeyn (Spanish), Mike Tompros (Greek), Bill Sleeper (Spanish), and Bruce Thomas (German). With their fiery red shirts and blouses, they resembled the disciples at that first Pentecost celebration. The effect of the multiple languages echoing in the nave was an awesome illustration of the words of that lesson: When the day of Pentecost had come, the disciples were all together in one place. And suddenly from heaven there came a sound like the rush of a violent wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. Divided tongues, as of fire,

appeared among them, and a tongue rested on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages, as the

Spirit gave them ability. And the crowd that day was bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in the native language of each. We’d like to have an even greater variety of languages in future years. If you are someone with the gift of a second language and are willing to participate in this demonstration of the Holy Cacophony of Pentecost, please let Linda (770-993-1094, ext. 104) in the parish office know what language you feel comfortable reading. A printed translation of the lesson in that language will be provided for you. Pentecost next year is on May 27!

The Flower Ambassadors need

volunteers! This is a caring ministry where you deliver a vase of the altar flowers to fellow parishioners. Ambassadors are scheduled once every 7 weeks and only 6 times during a year. The

deliveries take about 1 hour. If you would like instead to deliver only a couple times during the year, you can join as a substitute. We would love to have you. Please call or email Suzanne Mullis if this sounds like something you would like to do. Suzanne: 770-924-4941 or [email protected].

A Time to Say Thank You! St. David’s wants to honor all of the faithful members of the Altar Guild on Sunday, July 17 in Jeffords Fellowship Hall, after the 10:00 a.m. service. We also want to invite anyone in the parish who would like to join our Altar Guild Ministry. Please RSVP to Helen Owens, 770 992 8127, or contact Anne Elizabeth+ at 770 993 6084.

St David's Men's Retreat The weekend of April 30th and May 1st, 30 men from St David's participated in the 2011 Men's Retreat at Unicoi State Park. Fr Jim Nixon's presentation of "The One Thing" used the movie "City Slickers" as a catalyst to get the men thinking about what "One Thing" in their lives is most important. The movie was shown in segments, after which small groups met to discuss what they had seen and answer questions posed by Fr Nixon. On Friday, April 29th, 9 men played golf at The Orchards Club in Clarkesville, GA, and joined 3 other men at Unicoi for an evening cookout and fellowship. Saturday night Jim Pitts did his fabulous Low Country Boil for the whole group. Sunday morning the program wrapped-up and a worship service with the Holy Eucharist was held outdoors in the Lodge Garden. Some men took time to hike and fish. The weather was beautiful for the entire event - Thanks to God for that. We hope more of the men of St. David's will join us next year.

Former Par ish ioner to be

ordained to Pries thood! David Wagner, son of Nancy and Jack Wagner and raised at St. David’s, is being ordained to the Priesthood on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. at The Cathedral of St. Philip, in Atlanta. David will be serving as Assistant Rector at St. Martin’s in the Fields Episcopal Church in Columbia, SC. If you can attend, please do and show your support for David!

THE BROTHERHOOD OF ST. ANDREW

The men in Brotherhood of St. Andrew Chapter at St. David’s are not super Christians; we’re just sharing our faith with the world as it is, through a commitment to the Brotherhood Disciplines of Prayer, Bible Study and Service.

As we enter the fall season of 2011, we are going to engage in the study of “Mere Christianity,” by C. S. Lewis, led by Fr. Ken Swanson, beginning Monday evening, September 12th at 7:30 p.m., in the old Parish Hall. Our meetings are held on the 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

If you have a desire to be a part of a group of men here at St. David’s that regularly: Studies the Holy Scriptures and related texts Prays for the spread of Christ’s Kingdom Reaches out to others to draw them into Christian

fellowship Offers time and talent to community projects Then we cordially invite you to come visit us at the Ministry Fair, August 28th and sign up to experience Christian fellowship in the Brotherhood of St. Andrew. Stewardship doesn’t take

a summer hol iday. Over the summer it seems that Episcopal Church attendance falls off a bit. This is linked to the tradition of ‘Holidaying’ in Southern Europe by the Anglican nobility of the day from harsh summer months in merry olde England. Although most Americans willingly copy this concept, it may not be as applicable today as it was a few hundred years ago. St. David’s is still an active parish with ministries performing daily or at least regularly. A parish at rest remains at rest; a parish in motion remains in motion and thrives off itself! St. David’s is vibrant because of the lay ministry going on year round. I encourage you to get involved, for the old adage ‘the more you give the more you get’ never applied more than it does here. It seems like this year will be our 80th Vacation Bible School for a week in July. We’re adding monthly parish luncheons this summer for fellowship after church for all those who don’t get enough hugging in during the Peace. We’re offering a three week “summer camp” for pre-schoolers, starting on June 13th. We’re even continuing a Sunday school class this summer that meets at 9:00 in the Bethany Room for those looking for more than just a church service on Sunday morning. It’s

a great chance for a ‘7:45er’ to try a class and meet the later crowd. The St. Francis Guild, our day labor ministry, is still ministering daily to the needy amongst our community. The Men’s club is still doing their award winning breakfasts on Sundays. Youth and Adult Mission Trips, including one to Honduras, are planned over this summer. St. Theresa’s Guild is still folding and mailing a newsletter, on a lighter schedule, but by no means are they taking the summer off! The Scouts have activities planned. There are numerous opportunities to utilize your time, talent and treasures in and around the facilities we are so blessed to have. Life is busy, life is hectic, but maybe over the summer you have a few moments to catch your breath and try something new. Individually or the whole family can get involved, meet your fellow parishioners while serving God in ways you may not have even known existed. Check with the church office for more Stewardship opportunities, for true Stewardship begins after you say “I believe!” Have a great summer and I look forward to seeing you at St. David’s! ST. DAVID’S LIBRARY NEWS

After extensive purging and organizing, our parish library (located in the upstairs reception office area) is now finished! Due to limited shelf space, careful consideration was given to each book that remains. Please take a few moments to familiarize yourself with each category, choose a book or two, sign them out, and get reading! Each book is stamped on the inside with a "please return" stamp, and each one is marked with the category to which it is to be returned. Upon returning your books please mark your name off the check out sheet. Very simple.

When donating books to the library, please consider if it belongs in a church library. There are many charitable organizations that would love your Book Club, Oprah Reading List, How To, and Best Seller books that we will not be taking at this time. If you do donate, please drop off your books in the Book Drop box located to the left of the book shelves. We will stamp and categorize the books before they're shelved. The library was given this facelift by 3 parishioners as a gift to the parish and in

thanksgiving for books and a love of learning. Please enjoy!

From the Finance Committee . . .

This is a brief summary of St. David’s financial results as of the end of April. If you have any questions or would like to discuss our financial results further, please contact Treasurer Jim Landers at 770-312-7833. For the four months ended in April, St. David’s received $476,219 in contributions from parishioners. This represents a 27% increase compared to the same period in 2010, principally because we have 56 more pledging families so far this year. We also transferred $9,443 from our restricted funds in order to fund current operating needs. In addition, we received Jeffords Fellowship Hall (JFH) Campaign collections of $25,999, which is only one-sixth of the receipts during this period in 2010 and is less than one month of mortgage payments on JFH. Total operating expenses, before debt service, were $394,991, which is approximately 8% less than our budget. It is positive that St. David’s has incurred lower expenses than we planned this year, and we continue to do a good job of managing our expenses. However, much of this positive budget variance relates to maintenance and repairs which we budgeted for, and believe we will incur, later this year. Total debt service for the period was $113,759, which is approximately the same as the budget. Monthly debt service (including principal and interest on the Diocesan Foundation loan and interest on the JFH mortgage) will remain at approximately $29,000 per month until November, after which time it will increase to approximately $39,000 per month as the principal on the JFH mortgage begins to amortize.

CAMP MIKELL SUMMER CAMP

Memories from Kid Camp I

June 1-6 , 2011 What a fun session we had at Mikell Kid Camp I: 72 campers, 18 counselors, 20 summer staffers, and 7 Dean’s staff, not to mention the scorching HEAT that was in attendance as well! We enjoyed lots of fun camp activities together and shared in Christian community with our summer theme of Living Water. St. David’s Church was well represented with several campers, 4 summer staff members (John Fallon, Brett Wilson, Ben Asbury, and Andrew Smith), and our Dean’s staff who welcomed a wonderful visit and church service with Ken Swanson. Adult Educat ion: EfM has openings th is fa l l The Education for Ministry (EfM) program, an Adult Christian Education opportunity, is currently registering new members for class beginning Monday, September 12, 2011. EfM is a distance-learning theological education program developed in 1975 by the School of Theology of the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Participants commit one year at a time to meet regularly in seminars led by a trained mentor (Betty Cunningham). Completion of the program takes four years. First-year students study the Old testament; second-year students study the New Testament; third=year students study church history; and fourth-year students study theology. Together, students discuss the reading materials, reflect theologically, worship together, and share their spiritual journeys. Students are responsible for their own learning (i.e., no tests or papers) and are obliged to regularly attend class. St. David’s has held EfM classes for the past 25 years. The class meets every Monday, from 6:45-9:00 p.m., September 12 through May 21, at St. David’s in the Bethany Room. If you are interested in participating in EfM, please contact Betty Cunningham at [email protected] or 770-309-3994. The cost of the class for one year is $350. The deadline for application is August 8, 2011.

ST. AIDAN’S GUILD

www.stdavidchurch.org

Remember Your Na me Tag! We’ve begun the summer schedule! Our three Sunday morning services are blended into two and I realized again this morning that there are many faces I don’t know!

Or…the face is familiar, but I simply cannot put a name with it! Is that happening to you too? It would be such a great help if everyone would wear their name tags!

Or…perhaps some are visitors in our midst or new members trying to learn names.

Regardless the reason, we encourage you to find and wear you name tags! Smile and greet one another by name! What a great way to start the day on Sunday!

Who is St . Aidan? We hope by now you have heard about St. Aidan’s Guild and the work we are doing at St. David’s to promote the spiritual health and well-being of individuals and our Parish. The question was recently asked... “Who is St. Aidan and why is it called St. Aidan’s Guild?” Here’s the short story.

Our father among the saints Aidan of Lindisfarne, Enlightener of Northumbria (?-651), was the founder and first bishop of the monastery on the island of Lindisfarne off the northeast coast of England. A Christian missionary, he is credited with restoring Christianity to Northumbria (Northern England). His feast day is August 31. An inspired missionary, St. Aidan would

walk from one village to another, politely conversing with the

people he saw, slowly interesting them in Christianity. According to the legend, the king gave Aidan a horse so that he wouldn't have to walk, but Aidan gave the horse to a beggar. By patiently talking to the people on their own level, Aidan and his monks slowly restored Christianity to the Northumbrian communities. Aidan also took in twelve English boys to train at the monastery, to ensure that the area's future religious leadership would be English. In 651 a pagan army attacked Bamburgh and attempted to set its walls ablaze. According to legend, Aidan prayed for the city, after which the winds turned and blew the smoke and fire toward the enemy, repulsing them. Aidan's friend St. Oswin of Deira was murdered in 651. Twelve days later Aidan died, on August 31, in the 17th year of his episcopacy. He had become ill while at the Bamburgh castle, and died leaning against the wall of the local church. St. Aidan's expression of the Orthodox Christian faith was more from the native Celtic strand rather than the Roman/Latin variety growing in the south of England, but his character and energy in missionary work won him the respect of Popes Honorius I and Felix I. The monastery he founded grew and helped found churches and other monasteries throughout the area. It also became a center of learning and a storehouse of scholarly knowledge. The Venerable Bede would later write Aidan's hagiography and describe the miracles attributed to him. In other words, St. Aidan was one of the original evangelists, working to spread the Good News of Jesus Christ! St. Aidan’s Guild – A ministry to release the God-given potential for growth and new life at St. David’s church through education, invitation, and partnership.

Facts about Fall Prevention

from the Center for Disease Control and the American Trauma Society

One in 3 adults aged 65 and older fall each year.

Falls in this age group are the leading cause of injury death as well as the most common cause of nonfatal

injuries and hospital admissions.

20-30% of people who fall suffer moderate to severe injuries such as lacerations, hip fractures or head

traumas. These injuries often prevent them from returning home or living alone again.

Falls are the most common cause of traumatic brain injury (TBI), about 46% of fatal falls among older

adults.

Fear of falling can cause people to be afraid of activity leading to an increased risk of falling due to

reduced mobility and weakness.

Preventing falls

Exercise. Regularly. It’s the most effective way to prevent falls. Increase your leg strength and improve

balance. Tai Chi is effective, speak to Carlyn Romeyn for more information about this.

Ask your doctor

To review your medications (prescription and over the counter) to reduce the risk of side effects

such as dizziness or drowsiness that can lead to falls.

For a physical therapy referral if you are very weak.

Have your eyes checked regularly; keep your glasses prescription up to date.

Inspect then correct hazards in your home such as:

Loose throw rugs

Furniture that blocks the pathway

Items on the floor such as books, papers, etc that block the pathway

Inadequate lighting

Need for grab bars and rails in the shower/tub area and stairwells

Additional information to consider

One reason people fall and can’t get up may be because they haven’t been on the floor for a long time and

their muscles aren’t prepared to lift them up.

Adequate calcium and Vitamin D (Sunshine or supplemental) are both necessary for strong bones.

Get involved in a weight training/resistance program. Water aerobics is a good example of this, as is a free

weights program.

Wear sensible shoes with low heels that support your feet and won’t slip while you are walking.

Avoid areas that are inadequately lit, or that are tricky to maneuver through.

If you get dizzy when you stand up, make sure you have something stable to hold onto until the dizziness

passes, and don’t try to walk until it does.

People often fall in new environments. Be particularly cautious when on vacation or after a move.
