From the Pastor 31
Then Jesus said to the Jews who had believed in him, “If you continue in my word, you are truly my disciples; 32
and you will know the truth, and the truth will make you free.” John 8:31-32
As a child I loved to go trick or treating. One time my sister and I went to our neighbor’s house on Halloween and yelled out “Trick or Treat.” Our neighbor answered the door and said to us, “Show me a trick, and I’ll give you a treat.” Now, this surprised us. But my sister and I wanted the treat so we did a song and dance routine (not much of a trick) and we received our treat. Now I shared this childhood experience with you to emphasize an important truth that Martin Luther discovered. And this important truth informs us that there are no tricks that we must do in order to receive God’s treat of forgiveness, life and salvation. The treat began for Martin Luther when he was 20 years old, as he studied law. One day in the University library Luther passed a Bible that was chained to a stall. Bibles back then were very rare and expensive. Luther wrote;” I opened the Bible more out of curiosity than for any desire for knowledge. I read where it opened (1 Samuel), and my whole life changed. I read the story of Hannah and young Samuel. I had thought the Bible to be a Book of Gospel and Epistle lessons to be read in church, of laws that we must follow, and Psalms we must read. But here was a story of common people. A Woman prayed for a son. Here was a God who answered her prayers. I thought, ‘If God answered her prayers, would He not also answer mine?’ I read on and learned of the love of God. Can you imagine a God who says, ‘Ask and it shall be given, seek and you will find, knock that the door will be opened?”’ Later, as Luther’s faith grew, Luther was preparing to lecture on the Book of Romans. During these preparations, Luther read “
21But now, apart from law, the righteousness of God has been disclosed, and is attested by
the law and the prophets, 22
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction,…
28For we hold that a person is justified by faith apart from works prescribed by the law. Romans 3:21-22,
28 Suddenly Luther’s life was changed. For most of his life Luther had been tricked into thinking that that he had to make himself “righteous” by obeying the Law, but now he learned the truth, that “righteousness” from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ – not by observing the Law. Luther became very excited, and he wanted to tell the whole church about the “Good News” he discovered. On October 31, 1517 Luther posted 95 Theses (statements for debate) on the church door at Wittenberg. But sadly these were never debated. And Luther was excommunicated from the Church and the Lutheran Church was begun. As we prepare for Reformation Sunday ( October 26) and celebrate the affirmation of faith of 5 students and witness another child being received into the Church through Baptism let us rejoice that we do not have to perform “tricks” to be received into the Kingdom of God. For the “treat” of Salvation comes to us as a gift through our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. See you in Church

● SUNDAY ADULT CLASSES
Consider joining one of the adult Bible classes this fall. The Heritage Class (Rooms 307 A&B)
continues with its study of Sustaining Hope while the Assembly Class (Hospitality Room)is engaged
in a series of discussions based upon the appointed lessons for the day. Meanwhile ,the Covenant
Class (Family Life Center, 3rd Floor) is in the process of a five-lesson curriculum series, Who Is Jesus? by Rev. Roy Beutel. The class is led by a different class member each Sunday. With this
diversity of topics from which to choose, we would like to have more participation in these classes.
The time spent provides an opportunity for more spiritual growth among our lives as fellow
Christians. Hope to see you there in the near future.
MISSIONAL RIVER UPDATE – The Missional River team has completed its several-month task of “Discernment” as we met with many members. A summary of YOUR ideas was presented to the Council at its September meeting as we sought further guidance and direction. We will have our third meeting with the other ten congregations involved in this effort next January 17, at which time we will share mutual concerns with one another. At this stage, many wonderful and worthwhile suggestions and ides have been brought forth; now we look forward in the coming months to move from the talking/listening /discussing stages to the acting/doing/participating stages.

OCTOBER 2014
Recently, the editor of Stewardship received a letter from a man named
Thomas. He was so impressed with it that he printed it in the October issue of
the newsletter. It is too long for me to read, but I will tell you the gist of it
because I was moved by it as was the editor.
Thomas said that his personal commitment is based on the belief that all he
is and all he has is a gift from God. Therefore he, following the example of his
father, gives generously to his church and other worthy causes. And here is
what he has discovered: “I have discovered joy in giving and proven to myself
that it is impossible to out-give God.” In Luke’s gospel (6:38), we find our
Lord saying “Give and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down,
shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap.” But what are we
given? Well, our being, our lives, our energy, our resources, and our time.
A hymn by Thomas Chisholm that sums up what stewardship about:
Living for Jesus, a life that is true, Striving to please him in all that I do;
Yielding allegiance, glad hearted and free, This is the pathway of
blessing for me.
O Jesus, Lord and Savior, I give myself to Thee, For Thou, in Thy
atonement, didst give Thyself for me.
I own no other Master, my heart shall be Thy throne.
My life I give, henceforth to live, O Christ, for Thee alone.
Prayer: Lord of all, loving Creator and Savior, help us to worship you
sincerely and to faithfully serve you all the days of our lives. In Christ's name
we pray. Amen

Polka Service and Sausage Supper Assistance Needed
For many years now Emanuel’s has supported the Christian Cupboard, in great measure, through the donations received through the free-will offerings at the Polka Service and Sausage Supper. In order to maximize the amount of the donation we are able to make to the Christian Cupboard ministry, Gary Strey smokes the wonderful sausage and ladies from the Social Concerns committee cook and serve the beans, potatoes, sauerkraut and bread meal for the 200 attendees. This is a time-consuming and labor-intensive endeavor, but we do this because it ensures that the donations raised are contributed to the Christian Cupboard and not filtered through a caterer, which would cost much more. However, our numbers on this very active committee in our church are shrinking and those of us on the committee are aging to the point that it is becoming increasingly more difficult to make all of the necessary preparations for the meal, decorate the fellowship hall and clean-up and put away after the event, especially when several of the ladies on this committee will arrive back at the church early Monday morning to bake coffee cakes for Ladies Aid. We need your help. We need additional people to help prepare the meal and, especially, to clean up and put away the materials after the event. The Polka Service’s Sausage Supper needs extra hands to continue to raise funds to further this vital ministry to hungry families in our community. Please contact Deb or Mike Haug, Lee or Beth Jahns, Debbie Almquist or Maxine Hollub to assist us on Sunday, October 26. Your service to this ministry will be greatly appreciated. Thank you! Thank you to the Ladies Aid for their kind and generous donation to the Day School for classroom materials. Yours was the perfect gift to buy a set of terrific Bible storybooks for our guest reader who will begin visiting us soon. We will also be able to purchase the DVD set to accompany the books. We all appreciate your support of our Day School very much.

Ladies Aid Report By Ann Erxleben
The September 3rd meeting of the Ladies Aid opened with a prayer and the hymn I Love to Tell the Story. Twenty-three members, Pastor Paul, Dennis Sagebiel, council president, and two visitors were present. Pastor Paul’s bible study was on transformation and conversion. A Glad and Happy Birthday was sung for the September birthday ladies. September anniversary couples were recognized.
Minutes of the August meeting were read and approved, followed by the treasurer’s report. Standing Committees made their reports; cheer cards went out, and requests for the prayer chain were also reported.
Old business: The awning will soon be in place at the north door on Mountain Street. Report on the new podium to be built for use in the Women’s Ministry Room was made to the ladies.
New business: The ladies voted to make a donation for the basket raffle for Guadalupe Valley Christian Counseling Center. A donation for learning materials for the Day School was approved. We have received only one reply for interested coffee cake bakers on a Saturday. Unless we receive more requests for Saturday baking, we will bake on 4 Mondays in October, and one in November.
Coffee Cake Baking The Ladies Aid will begin baking and selling coffee cakes on Mondays in October. The bazaar will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Some interest has been shown that if we baked on a Saturday, more could participate in this project. Our first Monday for baking will be October 6. This will be followed up with baking on Mondays Oct. 20, 27 and Nov. 3 If you would be interested in this project, give a call to Ann Erxleben at 379-5259 or to Beulah Reiley at 379- 6739 and give us your comments.
Emanuel’s Lutheran Day School News
October is a very busy month at the Day School. We will be singing at the Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 5 at 4 pm as Pastor Paul blesses pets. Art Fair projects are beginning now for the Guadalupe County Fair. We will tour and learn about school buses, attend a Fire Department Puppet show, sing at the Emanuel’s Sunday service on October 19, walk to the Pumpkin Patch and form a Halloween Costume Parade to call on the businesses in the downtown Seguin area. All the while we are learning our colors, shapes, numbers, letters, sounds, animals, plants, handwriting, days of the week and months of the year, working in the Garden of Eatin’, and much, much more. Miss Hannah from the Seguin Public Library comes to read to us each month; Miss Karen and Miss Evelyn teach music to us every Monday and Wednesday afternoon, and Miss Alex teaches Bible lessons to us on Friday afternoons. The children continue to attend chapel services with Mr. Tom each Tuesday and Thursday mornings. We still have spaces for all classes – toddler, three-year-old and four-year old, particularly in the three-year-old class. Spread the word to family and friends! Come over and visit! Check out our Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/EmanuelsDaySchool to learn what we are up to every day and all that we are learning. “Like” our page for regular updates. All are welcome to come see us any time. The Day School youngsters are enthusiastic participants in the Garden of Eatin’. The four-year-old class has begun planting the fall garden in their painted tires. They have just harvested the nine-foot-tall sunflower seed heads to pull and roast the seeds. They have picked, peeled and harvested seeds from the loofa sponges, and routinely take their compost from left-over snacks to the bins in the Garden each day. Through the Garden our children are learning not only to grow vegetables and herbs, but also vocabulary, colors, shapes and sizes, science of plants along with rainfall importance and ground nutrients, water and soil conservation, measuring height, width and growth and, most important, the value of worthwhile work well done in the context of life in God’s garden. The Day School Task Force met on Saturday, September 20 and was charged by the Council to investigate options for the Day School and its future. We had an excellent meeting and members including single Emanuel’s congregation members as well as Emanuel’s families, parents from the Day School, former Day School Director and Board members, former teachers, current teachers, members of the community, a representative from a San Antonio Lutheran Day School, and staff from Emanuel’s. We will be exploring the current status of our Day School and how it meets the needs of the surrounding community and serves as a ministry to our church. What are the needs of families in our community for early childhood education and daycare? Do we accomplish that adequately? Do we need to expand? If so, how do we manage that physically and financially? How do our programs, curriculum and staff skills compare to those of other education and daycare centers in our community? How do we take advantage of the assets we have while enhancing those areas that need to grow and improve? It was an excellent meeting and we will continue to meet throughout the fall until we are able to present a comprehensive report with recommendations to the Congregation Council and congregation. May the Peace of the Lord be with you always, Deb Haug, Administrator
