    N e w s l e t t e rNovember 2010 Issue 10

    Welcome to the November issue of Orbits. I am sure that many of you are wondering howit is that you are reading a November issue of the AANSW Newsletter, this year just seemsto have flown by. We had a great meeting last month with Roderick Kidston explaining tothe meeting additional axis that can enhance our readings. I was enthralled with Rodericksknowledge of mythology and intrigued by applications of the axis from his extensiveresearch. Roderick was also a generous addition to the members forum facilitated by DrNeil Hair, which looked at Vertex points. Further into the newsletter is a generouscontribution from Roderick about the angles he presented to the meeting.

    The winner of the sponsorship to the IIA Breaking Down the Boarders draw was announced the lucky member Gail McMahon will be attending on-line. Congratulations Gail!

    I am also pleases to report on the excellent day on the eve of Halloween in Wollongong. I

    attended the workshop presented by Zane Stein on Chiron. Once again the members of theSouth Coast meeting provided a very friendly atmosphere for the presenter and visitors tothe group. Zane, like Roderick, has a vast knowledge that is a result of extensive research.I particularly enjoyed Zanes interpretations of attendees charts, everyone could relate tohis reading of the chart. I believe that all participants left with enhanced astrology skills.Zane will be presenting a Lecture at the Breaking Down the Boarders Conference.

    For the November meeting, we the AANSW, are delighted to welcome Jessica Adams.Jessicas presentation is about the 2 new dwarf planets, Pluto, downgraded and Ceres,upgraded and their daughter from the myths Proserpina and how they impact onrelationships. I am sure that we will all be in for a treat.

    So please come along and share in an afternoon of astrological interchange with like-minded people. The venue is Drummoyne Community Centre, 10 Cometrowe Street,Drummoyne and doors open at 1:15pm on the 2nd Saturday of the month (except Jan).

    the zodiac rising at the equator for the sidereal birth-time of the relevant chart. The Vertex isthe western point of intersection of the arc of the ecliptic with the prime vertical, a great circlepassing through the Earths zenith and nadir. The Co-Ascendant represents the intersection ofthe ecliptic with the co-equator (more simply, you can understand it as the point rising at theco-latitude of the birth-place for the relevant time). The Polar Ascendant shows the point of thezodiac described by the intersection of the ecliptic with the co-polar axis.

    Dont expect me to recite most of the preceding geometrical jargon off the cuff if you corner mein discussion some time I have to refer to text on this sort of thing, as the mathematics ofastrology is easily my weakest area. My strength lies in right-brain intuitive processes arounddiscerning meaning, which is partly why I have so much fun with asteroids! But I also have funanalysing the meaning of the angles of the chart, even if I dont always remember how they arecalculated. I just know that with this full set, we have all the major points of power in the chart and knowing where thepoints of powerare located is of vital importance to interpretation.

    In terms of a written account of all the angles and their geometry, you can do no better than toread the essay by Michael Munkasey mentioned above. But this essay has comparatively littleto say about the meanings of the angles he was much more forthcoming on this element in his

    1994 lecture. In that forum he called for a much greater emphasis on all the angles, togetherwith the Aries point and the lunar nodes as personal sensitive points which all offer vital cluesto the primary points of significance in the chart. A paraphrase of his definitions is as follows:

    The Ascendant is a point through which one deals with the environment and filters data,and is a projective mechanism (a definition consonant with the standard account of theAsc as a point showing the persona with which we engage with the world);

    The MC is the gatekeeper of consciousness and represents the continuity of identity andpersonality, and shows the maturation process;

    The EQ represents a background to the consciousness shown by the Asc, and describes

    both the shadow in need of integration and a secret part of the psyche that is not easilyshared;

    The Vx is a point of entanglement where wishes are generated and mesh with theworld, and if its energies are unused, they will draw in other people to force the issueinto the open; more generally the Vx is an open channel between the individual and thecollective unconscious;

    The CoA is an intuitive point, representing that aspect of consciousness which collectsand interprets data not obtainable via the five physical senses or which responds tosubtle cues such as body language and vibes; and

    The PoA shows the part of the mind that connects one, in an ESP way, to many people orevents, not necessarily those in the immediate environment, and which shows social andcultural responses and influences, and feedback in subliminal ways.

    In my view these remain the best definitions anyone has offered publicly, and I lament that thecall Michael Munkasey put out in 1994 has gone almost unheard either here in Australia orindeed anywhere else! I would concur with the thrust of everything Mr Munkasey has proposed,and agree with most of his specifics, too. But based on my own work since 1994, I would addthe following:

    The PoA seems to link every bit as readily with the collective unconscious (and evenconscious!) as the Vx, and may be an even more open channel in this regard;

    PoA feedback can be veryovert not necessarily subliminal and can link withextraordinary power to overt expressions in the wider culture, including large culturaltrends and mass movements;

    6

    The PoA is arguably the third most powerful axis in the horoscope and planets linked toit, especially by conjunction, can dominate the entire chart as completely as any planetrising or culminating is normally considered to do;

    Perhaps the best word for the PoA is feedback, since it seems to work as a very

    powerful feedback loop between the native (human or other) and the world in which thenative moves, and the planets linked most powerfully to the PoA will describe the natureof the energy feedback as conspicuously as a rising or culminating planet;

    Both the EQ and the CoA have a bearing on some of the more hidden (and sometimesshadowy) elements of the psyche, and the EQ in particular can be highly descriptive ofdifficult characteristics and response as Mr Munkasey notes, the shadow in theJungian sense so that planets linked to the EQ often need careful handling to expressskilfully; and

    The CoA, though often private and subtle, has real power. It seems to show a veryinstinctive and spontaneous response to the world, and planets linking to it can manifest

    in quite primal and almost untutored ways, unlike the Asc where we tend to be carefulwhat we project. The CoA need not be destructive (nor need be the EQ) but the mostconspicuous thing I have noticed about the CoA in recent years is that it seems to showan energy that never really shuts down. It is as though any planet linked to it is always

    on and has no off switch. This constant flow of energy is partly what can make itchallenging, as if (to change metaphors) it were a car with no brakes functioning.

    There is so much more that could be said but I hope this all too brief account might encourageat least a few people to look more carefully at all the angles of the horoscope. You will find yourability to find the truly important elements of the chart is greatly enhanced by offering a fullrespect to all the power points it holds!

    IAA Conference 2010: November 19-21, 2010

    Breaking Down the Borders

    The conference is almost upon us below is the transcription of an interviewby Chris Turner. I really enjoyed reading this as it is a great history of thedevelopment in Australia of the astrological community and a passion to followthrough a wonderful concept. The link to the site,http://www.astrologyconference.org/ where you can read more interviews andregister.

    VOLUNTEERS WANTED

    Chris Turner is looking for volunteers to help with the Breaking Down the Borders Conference onthe 20th, 21stand 22ndof November. We need people to man the social room (The Foyer) and

    the two Trade Fair rooms over the three days. This would involve keeping your computer onwith the room open all day and being around to check on it every now and again. You wouldnot have to be sitting at the computer all day, as long as you were available when needed. Inreturn, the BDTB conference will give you three video recordings of your choice of lectures fromthe conference for each day you are able to help out.

    If you are intrigued and would like to know more, or you can help out, can you email me, Chris,at [email protected] or ring me on 9878 2079 or 0414 258 346 a.s.a.pplease

    An interview with Linda Furiate, professional astrologer, author , TV producer, and AstrologerChris Turner, Conference Coordinator for Breaking Down the Borders. If there is a "first" when itcomes to astrology, renowned Australian astrologer Chris Turner can usually be found involvedin it somewhere.

    Linda Furiate - You have been dubbed (by me) the Queen of Firsts when it comes to youraccomplishments with Astrology. You were the first to start an astrology school in Australia, thefirst to write a Sun sign column for a major publication, the first to create an Exam Board in

    Australia plus a few other major firsts. Tell us a little about some of your accomplishments andwhat drives you to push astrology into the fore front?

    Chris Turner - Queen of Firsts huh? Sounds good!!!

    What drives me I guess is the gut instinct that astrology is an ever evolving thing. It needs to growand evolve as society grows and evolves. When I first developed an academic interest in it back ineither the late 60s or early 70s I cant remember any more here in Australia, and I suspect the

    rest of the western world too, astrology was a rather seedy subject. It was relegated to back lanesand people who wore long flowing robes and looked into crystal balls. Im not knocking crystal ballreaders by any means (I have one sitting on my mantelpiece) but astrology doesnt belong in thesame club. There is a reason that occultists called it the Golden Key and in my mind thats becauseit is the link between the exoteric and esoteric worlds. It is a beautiful language of poetry, myth, artand symbolism and yet it has its roots in pure science and academic observation. It is at once acombination of earthly and cosmic knowledge.

    I come from a scientific background and my first foray into astrology was for the same reason as anyother skeptic. To prove it didnt work. But I came from the opposite end than most skeptics, I had nodesire to show that it DID work, I had read and observed enough to see that there was certainly acore in there somewhere that seemed to work; rather I wanted to show that it didntwork. That ledto my astrological studies on a chimpanzee community. I figured that there was no way you could

    influence a chimp into becoming the zodiacal character they were supposed to be, or into selffulfilling prophecy, so if it worked on a chimp, it worked! And indeed it did, to a significant extent.

    I was also aware in those early days, that because astrology was relegated to being the realm ofFortune Tellers, that astrologers themselves were very fragmented. This was very obvious when Itried to find someone to teach it to me. Those that taught it taught it in a very haphazard mannerand many really had no idea what they were talking about in the first place. I became friends with alike minded astrology student, John Clarke, who felt the same way I did, so we set up the firststructured school of astrology in Australia here in Sydney, back in 1975 I think it was.

    Around the same time I had joined a couple of the local astrology associations, small groups usuallyrun by Little Old Women who were very into theosophy. I felt that astrology was in danger of beingstuck somewhere in the early 20thCentury, and that unless we became a more cohesive group wewould never catch up to society let alone keep abreast of it; nor would we ever get rid of the stigmaand delusions that surrounded it. As so often happens when there is change of an Aquarian nature, itis not just a single individual involved, and it wasnt in this case either. Across the country there wereothers who shared my visions of a cohesive astrology and over the next 15 years or so, we cametogether and did indeed create not only a means of bringing a sense of unity to Australian astrology,but also raised and consolidated a high academic standard through the creation of an independentnational Exam Board, qualifications and ultimately a Professional Organisation. In the process wemanaged to remove a great deal of that stigma I mentioned earlier, and at this point in time,although we are not strictly legal, we are treated with a modicum of respect by the media, the

    public and academia generally. There are clashes of course, there always will be, but they donthappen very often. As long as an astrologer pays his or her taxes and abides by a code of ethics, weare free to make a living in Australia, without any harassment or problems. To visit an astrologerhere may cause a raised eyebrow in a few circles, but nothing more than that.

    LF - The BDTB cyber conference is yet another first for you, what was your inspiration in creating alive online astrology conference?

    CT - There were a few threads that came together at the right time. I think every astrology teacherdreams of holding a conference. Unfortunately you need resources to do that which most teachersdont have. It falls to the astrology associations to hold them, and they draw upon their membersvery heavily to do the necessary work. Ena (Stanley) and I, both teachers of many years, have bothhad the dream, and over the years we would sometimes talk about it in our personal conversations.

    That was the first thread.

    Secondly, the IAA had been using web conferencing rooms for a year or so, learning about theircapabilities, getting used to them, and most importantly coming to a recognition that through themthere was the potential for being able to teach students from anywhere in the world from the NorthPole to the Congo and everywhere in-between using the best teachers from everywhere. In Australia,if you lived outside one of our major cities and we only have about a dozen you could really onlyteach yourself astrology from books, or more recently the internet, or by correspondence. We, andme in particular being an Aussie, really loved the idea that now someone in Broken Hill could learnfrom a good teacher in a live virtually face to face situation from Sydney, New York or London.

    Ena and I were talking about this one day, and the subject of a conference came up yet again, but asalways as wishful thinking. This time we did talk about the difficulties of doing live teaching and

    conferencing because the Earth is round and the worlds population is spread over 24 Time Zones.

    When I got off the phone, I was still thinking about it and realised that years before I had set up amonthly lecture program for the Conjunction astrology group. That lecture is always at 10:00 pmGMT as I had worked out back then that that was the only time most of the Western World wasawake. It was very early in the morning for some, and very late at night for others, but generallydoable for everyone in the English speaking world including Europe and Eastern Asia. So out ofcuriosity I decided to start from that 10:00 pm GMT slot and see if I could work out a timetable thatwould enable most of the English speaking world to be able to come to a conference at reasonabletimes. Without running the conference for 24 hours, it is hard to get most of the people most of thetime, but to my delight we could do it so that nearly everyone would be able to come for half theconference at least. I phoned Ena the next morning which happened to be the 19 thNovember2009, exactly a year to the day from the date I had picked for the opening day and said Youknow? I think we could do this. And, to be a touch melodramatic, with those words Pandoras Boxwas open.

    LF - Who should be attending this conference and when is it?

    CT - Not long now It feels like the longest pregnancy in history, but it will start on 19 Novemberand run for three full days to the 21 November if you live in western longitudes, or until the 22November if you live in eastern longitudes. Or, in non astrological terms, if you live in the US orSouth America, it will be from 19 21 November, if you live in Europe or Africa it will be from 19

    22 November and if you live in South East Asia, Australia or New Zealand it will be from 20November to 22 November.

    As for who should come, everyone of course!!! The conference is suitable for beginners to those whohave been studying for years; for the hobbyist to the professional and for whatever branch ofastrology anyone may be interested in. There are even lectures on how to make use of socialnetworking on the internet. What could be more appropriate for a cyber conference?

    LF - What are the benefits of attending an online conference?

    CT - Oh my goodness there are so many. The main advantage of course, is cost. For example, for meto attend a conference in the US or Europe, factoring in travel, accommodation, food, conferenceregistration, having a house sitter for 10 days to mind my animals, and lost time from work it would

    cost me approximately $5000.00 not to mention lost much needed vacation time and inconvenienceto my family who rely on me to pick up grandchildren from school etc.. Even to attend a conferencein my own country, it would cost me a minimum of $1500. For Breaking Down the Borders you paythe conference registration fee of $450.00, and thats it. And thats only if you attend the fullconference. Another advantage is that you dont have to attend the full conference. Its payable bythe lecture so you can attend only one lecture if you want. So it is affordable for everyone, unlikemost physical conferences.

    Another huge advantage to a Cancer/Taurus like me is that I can hear the best speakers from aroundthe world, sitting in my comfy office chair in my pyjamas! I will be able to get up and get a cup of teawhen I feel like it. I can smoke during the lecture and not bother anyone. My dogs wont miss me, Ican still pick up the children from school, I lose no time from my work or my holiday time and best ofall I get to sleep in my own bed. Heaven.

    And then there are the speakers. Not only the famous ones like Rob Hand, but some who many willnever have heard of, not because they arent excellent but because they are not American orEuropean or even Australian they have not had the opportunity to speak at a major physicalconference. They are the best their country has to offer and are as good as those we all know andlove. So my advice to everyone is dont automatically register for a speaker whose name yourecognize, but take a chance on someone you have never heard of. You will be pleasantly surprised.

    LF - From a global perspective how does an online conference help the astrology community or forthose others who want to be involved with astrology on some level?

    CT - I think the name says it all. An online conference knows no borders at all. It reinforces the factthat the astrology community is a global one that encompasses every country in the world. There is

    no need for a passport or a visa. This is the first conference of its kind on such a huge scale, and assuch we have chosen to do the entire conference in English, but who knows, next time we mayinclude lectures in Spanish or Russian or Chinese! The possibilities are endless. Another benefit isthat it brings all the different astrology research and branches together in one place. In my travels toconferences around the world over the past 30 years I have found that each country has its ownunique approach to astrology and for that matter to lecturing. A cyber conference enables thoseunique approaches to come together. It enables professional astrologers to go further afield thanthey ever have before and get outside their comfort zone.

    I would go on, but I suspect I have gone on quite enough!!!

    LF Chris, thank you for your wonderful input and insight. Big hugs!
