Drifting Back – August 2010by Larry Wilson

30 Years Ago (August 1980)

The annual SVR Charity Auction/Picnic on August 3 was a smash hit with a great turnout thanks to the co-chair quartet of Connie Farlinger, Kathleen Peebles, Carol Weber, and Trische Robertson who had the three main ingredients under control: a super auction to benefit Special Olympics ($1,200.00), the annual 356 vs 911 volleyball game, and good fellowship. Kirk Bradford and Larry Wilson started the auction in time to offer goodies to complement the picnic (two German cakes, Marie Smith’s delicacies, plus brownies and assorted sweets. Then came the hard-core items. Two major items donated by SVR members -- Betty Fielding’s stained glass rendition of Mickey Mouse, and Dave Marek’s original painting of a Porsche 936 -- drew furious bidding until Kern Breaux took Mickey home and the Colbert’s added the 936 to their growing collection of Marek originals. The volleyball game ended with an upset -- the 911 team won, and in a side-bet, Dwight and Linda Mitchell won the finely detailed chocolate 911. Special thanks were extended to the workers who helped make the event successful: John Meeker and Trische Robertson, George and Nona Morley, Colin Rueb, Carol Weber, Harvey Cain and Connie Farlinger, Kathleen and Scott Peebles, and Dolores Weddle.

It was about a day’s drive to the August 23 - 29 Porsche Parade in Portland according to DRIFTER editor Trische Robertson who also thought a three-hour head-start on the Harvey Cain (and Connie Farlinger) led SVR bunch would be a prudent thing to do. Hah! Harvey and bunch erased that margin at 9:30 AM when they caught Trische and John Meeker in Salem. Then it was peddle to the metal for Trische in her 912 as she hung on until they reached Portland. Later in the week, Trische would appreciate that learning experience as she won her class in the Parade autocross. And, so did Connie Farlinger (but not Harvey). Later, in the Tech Quiz, Mary Peters placed first in the 1972-1980 911 (Women) class. So, that is it -- only SVR-women scored wins in the Portland Parade.

Page 7: 1008 - August 2010

Page 5the drifter - Sacramento Valley Region - Porsche Club of America - www.derporsche.net

Oh yes also in the Tech Quiz, Trische finished third (with a trophy) in the 1966-1971 911 (Women) class. Greg Peart took second in the rally’s Novice class, but he doesn’t count -- he was still a member of Shasta Region.

20 Years Ago (August 1990)

During the August 19 Sierra Nevada Beer/Ale Tour, chaired by C.C. Craig and Jim McMahen, SVR members in 15 Porsche went to Chico and presented themselves at the Sierra Nevada Brewery chanting, “feed me, feed me.” First they had brunch, then they had beer and/or ale. Some of those attending were C.C. Craig and Karen Mangin, Garth & Vicki Mason, Pat & Larry Wilson, Mike and Vicki Willis, Ray & Sara Clements, Rik & Lettie Larson, Ron & Sally Boeck, Greg & Cyndee Peart, Allen & Dolores Weddle, the Greisses, Nancy Veach, Jim McMahen, and the Hersons. The group also had a lesson on how to make beer.

The August 28 Day at the Fair, chaired by Mike Willis, was SVR’s appearance in the “Trans Expo” held during the California State Fair at Cal Expo. Billed as an “auto hobbyist showcase” where a different type of vehicle is displayed on each of the State Fair’s 18 days, 14 SVR members jumped at the chance to display their beauties; Jim McMahen (1979 911), Suzanne Gallicho (1983 911SC), Cyndee and Greg Peart (1974 914-4 2.0), Jan and Herb Hoover (1968 912), Gordon Schotz (1976 930), Ken and Marcella Mitchell (1973 914-4 2.0), C.C. Craig (1974 911S), Mark Iriarte (1974 914-4 2.0), John and Judy Caffery (1983 944), Larry and Pat Wilson (1961 356B), Rich McGlumphy (1970 914-6), Phil Lawrence (1972 911), Bob Peake (1982 911SC), and Mike Willis (1974 911 Carrera). In return, each participant received two Fair passes and an event T-shirt. Chairman Willis set up a roster so each person would spend no more than one hour at the PCA/Porsche information table, then they were free to roam the Fair. Niello Porsche donated to the club an eye-catching banner with two Porsche crests for use at the display. Then they said, “keep it.”

The August 1990 issue of THE DRIFTER carried the best racer-quote of all time. Describing why his driving style in the Audi Quattro had changed to more effectively use all-wheel drive, Hans Stuck, Jr. said, “I learned that I had to be more smooth. Before, I was always sideways so much that I had more bugs on the doors than on the windshield.”

10 Years Ago (August 2000)

The August 10th dinner meeting, held at the Art Garage next to the 33rd Street Bistro was located, naturally, at 33rd and Folsom Blvd., Sacramento. Susan Fleming chaired this one and got a great turn-out of exhausted Parade 2000 workers. She was assured by restaurant owner, Fred Haines (also a member of SVR), that the cuisine would be special -- and it was! At a reasonable price, it included Baked Alaskan Salmon, Grilled sage and prosciutto chicken, Beef tri-tip

with cabernet demi-glaze, Roasted vegetables, and topped off with Crème Brule. Did we get all of that? If so, let’s do it again!

The August 2000 issue of the DRIFTER had a few interesting items. Tom Sisson’s list of new members included Tim and Joann Wilson with a 1961 Porsche 356B. The DRIFTER classifieds had an amazing ad from Garth Mason for a package-deal entitled, “Mini Junk-Yard Sale.” For $10,000 you could have one 1963 356B Cabriolet, one 1965 356C Coupe (“very rusty”), one 1965 912 (garaged for 20 years), two 1966 911s (one with a sunroof ), one 1967 911 Targa, AND one 1968 911 Targa. But wait, there’s more! Also included is a bunch of spares and every automotive magazine Garth ever read. This incredible deal may still be available. Call today (677-4095) -- operators are standing by.

Upcoming Event! Quick InfoEvent: Railway Museum and Pumpkin Patch Tour - When: Oct. 2 - Saturday 10:00AM - Location: Sacramento

During the late 1800s and early 1900s, before good roads and reliable autos, San Franciscans traveling to Sacramento,

Marysville and Chico rode inter-urban electric trains, or trolleys. Ranging from Spartan to luxurious, all paused at Rio

Vista Junction, just east of Travis AFB, to pick up and discharge passengers. Rio Vista Junction depot is long gone, but

the superb Western Railway Museum, showcasing many of those trolleys, brings it back to life.

The Western Railway Museum provides a rare opportunity to experience to travel as

Californians did a hundred years ago. The museum includes over 100 trolleys and cars,

miles of restored track, a car house, a restoration shop and a beautiful, new visitors’

center housing artifacts, a book/souvenir store and research library.

After arriving at the museum, you’re on your own---Pick your adventure…

• Ride an electric train through the picturesque Montezuma Hills on the original

historic mainline tracks of the Sacramento Northern Interurban Railway. Coach

passengers (included in the cost of admission) will travel in a car that spent its life

traveling from Oakland to Chico over the same rail line you’ll be riding on. Well-

preserved, it sports plush red seats and dark wood paneling. First class passengers

($5.00 extra) will take an antique parlor car, built in 1914 for the Salt Lake and

Utah Railway, fitted with overstuffed chairs, bronze light fixtures and floral

carpets. Uniformed attendants serve lemonade and cookies.

• Check out the 25 antique trolleys in the new 20,000 sq ft Car House. Many

additional displays are located outdoors.

• Picnic in tree-shaded Laflin Park on the museum grounds or at the pumpkin patch.

• Take a guided tour of Car House Three at 1:15 or of Car House One at 2:45.

• Enjoy a 15 minute long trolley ride around the museum grounds. Departure times: 20 and 40 minutes past the hour.

• Pumpkin Patch. A treat lies a few miles down the historic tracks of the Sacramento Northern interurban mainline.

Ride a trolley to the tree-shaded pumpkin patch in Gum Grove. Browse the food and gift booths, enjoy a hay ride

behind a slow-moving tractor and climb the hay bale castle, a favorite of both children and adults. Bales are carefully

stacked to leave kid-sized tunnels, great for exploring. Shoot small pumpkins at distant targets with a giant slingshot.

• Visit the museum store and browse thru books and souvenirs for adults and children.

Everybody and all vehicle types are welcome. Pop the kids into your Porsche or non-Porsche and treat them to a day

they won't soon forget.

Lunch: Bring a picnic. Food is also available at the museum café and usually at Gum Grove.

SVR Trip fee is $5.00 or one Fun Buck per car. Admission to the

museum is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors and $7 for children 14

and under, payable at the door. Coach rides are included in the

price of admission. The first class parlor-observation car is $5

additional.

Prep. Arrive with a full tank of gas. Radios channel 9, sub-

channel 6. Camera.

Meet at the California Automobile Museum (formerly Towe Ford

Museum) 2200 Front Street, Sacramento. Registration begins at

10:00. Drivers' meeting at 10:20 and departure at 10:30.

Striring the Pot with the Chief Spoonby Rik Larson, Vice President

I wanted to thank our webmaster, John Murphy, for posting the photos and Porsche Parade results. Seems that Larry Wilson had some unique access to a photographer at the events all week.

A link to videos of the Porsche Parade is on the SVR website (as of July 26th). Amazing the things you find on YouTube. The PCA National HQ folks even have their own channel that you can subscribe to. Try it.

Your dues are going up. Yes, beginning in 2011. This is one of the items (3 out of 3) approved at the board meeting at the Parade. The last time the dues were raised was in 1999.

Have your tried the new PCA iPhone app? I don’t have an iPhone yet so I guess I am not with the program.

The PCA Escape in September in British Columbia is sold out. This is the first time I have seen this happen. The PCA Escape for 2011 will be held in September in Flagstaff, Arizona.

Salt Lake City will be the site of the 2012 Porsche Parade (start date of July 8th, I think). Jessica Toney (Golden Gate Region) is involved with presenting the TSD Rally.

Savannah, Georgia is the host for the 2011 Porsche Parade (starts July 31th............anyone know when hurricane season starts?)

The Autobahn Concours (Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes Benz) down in Monterey has an online registration deadline of August 1st. It might be extended but don’t count on it.

Saw the GT3 R Hybrid at the Porsche Parade. Look for it in the ALMS races next year here in the states.

Attended another CRAB 35 meeting. Jim and Linda McMahen are moving right along with trying to get things firmed up. Remember the dates are April 29 thru May 1, 2011.

Got Kids (and grand kids)? Helen Ashuckian has a great event planned especially for them on Saturday, August 7th. Give her a call so that she can have enough ‘goodies’ for everyone. It will only take a couple of hours to run.

Prime rib cooked in an iron pot? That is what Ron and Bente Riley have planned for Saturday, August 28th at the Deaver Winery. Ron and Bente need to hear from you (as in make a reservation). You can tour the gold country with the Bradford’s ahead of time if you like. They will be meeting at Sloughhouse on Highway 16 at 2 pm and then lead a tour to the destination (with probably a few stops in between).

Charity Auction time is coming soon. Might as well grab those spare wheels, bras, Porsche items, etc. and package them up for our charity event to be held on Sunday, September 12th at the Folsom City Park. Tambra Kroetz is the chairperson and will be glad to help you get items to the event in case you are not able to attend (she is going to kill me for making this commitment for her).

July Board Minutesby Kevin R. Dougherty, 2010 Secretary

CALL TO ORDER

President Cookie Anderson called the meeting to order at 6:31 PM.

Attending: Cookie Anderson, Doug Klein, Helen Ashuckian, Kevin Dougherty, Phil Wood, Mike Willis, John Murphy, Gerry Cupler and Lee Deter.

Minutes: There was no June meeting so there were no minutes to approve.

OLD BUSINESS:

None

NEW BUSINESS:

Survey of Members: Doug Klein looked at 2 different sets of software for this purpose and priced them out (see attached). This is FYI for next year.

Email Blasts: Mike Willis initiated a discussion on email blasts to members. Cookie suggested we keep it to the first and fifteenth of the month and if an event appears to have a low attendance, there may be a separate blast. Doug pointed out that 3 other blasts go out for the Drifter, expiring members and expired members. Mike suggested that event deadlines coincide with the first and fifteenth blasts. This should minimize the need for “reminder” blasts for low reservation events.

Christmas Party: Cookie discussed the Christmas Dinner and requested a subsidy to lower per member cost for the event. The max amount of people for the venue (Whitney Oaks Golf Course) is 150. The board requested a budget before approval would be given.

BOARD MEMBER REPORTS:

Charity (Tambra Kroetz): No report

Competition (Frederick Rauch, Bob Peake & Helen Ashuckian): The June concours is scheduled to lose $450.00. There were only 18 cars in the concours. The last Autocross made $1,500 for the club. The Driver’s Education event money has yet to be turned over to the treasurer. Helen passed out information on the “Search and Discovery Tour” to be held on August 7, 2010.

Advertising (Mike Willis): Mike advises we had one possible new advertiser, but payment has not been received and the ad copy would not fit in the requested space. Three follow-up emails have been sent with no response. So Issue is considered closed.

Drifter (Rik Larson): No report

Financial Report (Phil Wood): We are about $2,000 in the black! We’re owed $1,400; $950 from Niello is expected and $350 balance from IPB is now over six months delinquent. Attached is a profit & loss statement. It costs the club about a dollar per check to issue one. Phil suggests E-checks from Wells Fargo with will cost the club NOTHING per check. He will start that ASAP. Mike requested a performance to budget report every other month, which Phil said, he would gladly provide.

Drifter: No Report

New Members (Lee Deter): Lee is hoping to introduce some of the new members to autocross. There will be a class at RPM on Tuesday July 13, 2010 on autocross just for new members. Goodie Store (Cookie Anderson): The Goodie Store will be at the Autocross in Stockton on July 18, 2010. It made $359 at the Rib Cook off.

Membership Director (Doug Klein): There are 551 regular members, 453 affiliate members and 5 dual members for a total of 1,009 members. Doug stated that the new member tour was a good time!

Social (Helen Ashuckian): Helen passed out a list of the attendees (31) to the upcoming Monthly Dinner meeting at Kaleb Kabob. The budget was approved for the October Dinner Meeting at Wong’s Garden in Roseville.

Webmaster (John Murphy): Pointed out the Carrera GT on sale in the Drifter. The MSRP was $440,000 new. This is the most expensive item ever advertised in the Drifter.

Vice President (Rik Larson): No Report

Past President (Mike Willis): No Report

President (Cookie Anderson): Cookie gave a plug for the Tour, Wine Tasting and Dinner to Deaver Vineyards on August 28, 2010.

Meeting adjourned: 7:41 P.M.

Editors Notesby Kyle Gong

Lots of upcoming events the next couple of months, make sure to check out the Calendar (page 10). Quite a bit of movement in the Classified section (page 20), make sure to check it out and remember, SVR members can advertise for free! Not just cars but parts or accessories as well. Thanks to everyone for getting the August articles to me right away. We are now caught up and I appreciate everyone’s assistance.

Tech Article Homegrown Sport Exhaust: Pros and Cons by Jim Kinnicutt, SVR Technical Chair

Are you thinking of doing your own sport exhaust? There are a couple of great examples on You Tube on exactly how to do this. There are also a couple of shops willing to do the same modification fairly inexpensively. Here is one link to check out that has a sound track to it:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zv_ljlNOe7M&feature=related Sounds pretty good, doesn’t it? They used a Boxster as a test bed, but I have seen this modification on 911 series cars as well.Basically, this straightforward modification, consisting of a 1 1/2“ inch pipe that is connected to the intake opening of the muffler to the exhaust tip. Keep in mind that, at least in the case of the Boxster, there are TWO catalytic converters on each side. The first is just aft of the collector on the headers and the second is integrated into the intake of the muffler itself. If you noticed in the video, this bypass pipe is referred to as a “secondary catalytic” bypass. The important thing to note here is that when you go to have your vehicle certified for smog, it is not likely to pass. This leaves the question of how to restore the system to stock for the smog inspection. To my knowledge this has not been addressed.

The bypass modification is a permanent modification which may mean you will be left with having to get another stock muffler to re-install.Another method is to build a primary cat back system. For this approach, the preferred method is to cut the exhaust just before it enters the secondary cat and muffler. It is best to install flanges on both sides of the cut so the original muffler assembly can easily be re-installed, if needed. The building the new system with a free flow muffler can be accomplished using a flange on it as well. The end result is that you will have two complete exhaust assemblies that can be interchanged as needed. This method also bypasses the secondary cat and may have a problem at smog certification time, so it would be advisable to keep that original exhaust assembly. With the first method, you get a good sound from your exhaust for a reasonable cost. That cost savings may disappear though when it comes time to get a new smog certification. The second method, while costing a bit more at first, will be much easier to restore to stock as needed when it comes to getting a smog certification and, in the end, may save money and frustration. It also results in a more free flowing exhaust.‘Till Next time, keep it soundin’ cool!

Happy motorin’! [email protected]

Around the CornerAX on August 22nd in Stockton. Contact Bob Peake if you are planning on attending (nice to know if you have enough folks to even run the event and also food purchases for the Bistro lunch).

The last Zone 7 Concours of the year will be held on September 26th at Ledson Winey in Kenwood. This is always a great venue.

A repeat of a visit to the Railway Museum in Rio Vista is planned for October 2nd. And then a visit to a pumpkin patch is planned for after-wards.

Mendocino Tour (November 5-7) is in the final planning stages. You had better have your rooms reserved by now. If not, contact Rik Larson for options and suggestions.

The Christmas Party is planned for Saturday, December 11th at Whitney Oaks Golf Club. Cookie is finalizing the details now (at least that is what it says in the July Board Meeting minutes).
