Nothing compares up close.

The man who loved too much

Wilhelm Brenneke was a hunter. He loved thewild creatures he pursued, however, andcould not stand to see game suffer when hitby the underpowered munitions of his day.So, in a small town in Germany in 1898,Wilhelm Brenneke invented the modernshotgun slug and revolutionized projectiledesign. It did not take long before lawenforcement and military agencies alsorecognized the potential of his creation.

Today, the Brenneke company is managed byWilhelm Brenneke’s great-grandson, whomaintains his ancestor’s commitment toabsolute performance and quality. Thecompany’s dedication to U.S. lawenforcement professionals is evidenced bythe creation of BrennekeUSA, and theloading of many Brenneke products in theUnited States. You can read more aboutWilhelm Brenneke’s many inventions atwww.brennekeusa.com.

Stops any gunfight immediately.

The purpose of a law enforcement projectile isreally very simple: to put an end to the problem athand…quickly, efficiently, and safely. No otherprojectile performs this task as completely as aBrenneke® 12 gauge slug.

The distinctive Brenneke design, created over acentury ago, combines a massive diameter ofalmost 3/4 of an inch, a frontal area of .42 inches, and mass of up to 525 grains, in a weight-forwardconfiguration that delivers devastating andimmediate energy transfer and stopping power tothe target.

Even so, power without control is not adequate. That’s why we offer several different sophisticatedprojectiles, from our Tactical Home Defense™,ideal for crowded urban environments whereexcess penetration is a dangerous liability, to ourSpecial Forces Short Magnum™ that can easilypenetrate vehicles, glass, doors and many walls. And, all Brenneke slugs are renowned for theiraccuracy; five-shot groups of two to three inchesat 50 yards are the norm.

For combat situations under 150 yards, wheremaximum stopping power is essential, theprofessional armed with a modern shotgun anda Brenneke slug is in very good hands, indeed.

Some of Brenneke’s most dedicatedcustomers include wildlife and policeagencies in Alaska, who often encounter four-legged threats in addition to modern urbandangers. They know that nothing will stop anangry 700-pound bear at close range betterthan a 12 gauge shotgun and a Brennekeslug. You can read about Ian McMurchy’sencounter at 10 paces on our website.

Not all slugs are created equal.

The design demands of a quality shotgun slug are entirely differentfrom those of a pistol or rifle bullet. Many slug manufacturersproudly show photos of their completely flattened fired projectiles, touting their “expansion.” This can be an effective principle in bullets, but is the exact opposite of what a slug should do.

Rapidly expanding slugs are a result of soft, inferior alloys.Penetration can be virtually nil, stopped or deflected by any hard object.

By comparison, Brenneke slugs expand very little. Their harder alloysand the uniquely shaped noses allow vastly superior penetration, astable and consistent path after impact, almost complete retentionof the projectile’s integrity, and very little weight loss.

Independent tests of Brenneke projectiles against major competitorsshowed that some slugs penetrated ballistic gelatin a mere 11.2inches…compared to as much as 34.9 inches for Brenneke.

Expansion is fine if your target is no more dangerous than a deer.Otherwise, rely upon a projectile that finishes the job—Brenneke.

Brenneke vs. other LE and military projectiles

No other commonly used projectile even comes closeto the devastating stopping power produced byBrenneke® slugs. As the chart below reveals, even therevered .45 Auto produces less than 20% of the energyof Brenneke’s Special Forces Short Magnum™ slug.

Both of these projectiles were fired at aRussian brown bear from less than 20yards. At left is the remnant of a 16gauge shotgun slug of inferior alloy; atright, a 7.62 mm FMJ rifle bullet. Bothpenetrated less than three inchesbeyond the great beast’s skin. The slughit the bear’s shoulder and stoppedcold; the 7.62 bullet was deflectedsideways by a rib. Fortunately for allparties involved, the primary hunterwas using a higher quality projectile. This demonstrates the inherentdangers of a projectile that does notpenetrate adequately.

Brenneke’s® Tactical Home Defense™ (THD) slug wascreated to answer the need of law enforcement andmilitary organizations for a projectile with maximumstopping power in close-in urban situations, while at thesame time lowering the risk of injury to bystanders.

The THD will penetrate doors, steel, and glass, and isdevastating on soft targets. Deformation and weight lossis negligible, with virtually all of its energy—as much asfour times greater than common handgun loads—immediately transferred to the target. Stopping power isinstant and absolute.

The THD’s high momentum factor allows penetrationof both hard and soft barriers, while maintaining ahigher average terminal velocity. This, along withits massive frontal area, means more tissuedamage, hemorrhage and trauma. It will, quitesimply, stop a gunfight immediately.

High-speed photo of Tactical Home Defense™ slug exiting6" x 6" x 16" FBI-spec block of calibrated 10% gelatin.

The THD produces extensive damage in the first blockof ballistic gelatin, expending virtually all of itsdevastating energy within the first 13 inches.Controlled penetration (only two inches in the secondblock) limits liability on unintended targets. Note thestability and consistent path of the THD.

Brenneke’s extensive independent ballistic testsconcluded with the Tactical Home Defense™ scoringat or near the top in accuracy, retained weight andenergy compared to its competitors. This means theTHD delivers on its promises. Competitive slugsoften produced inconsistent results and excessivepenetration, despite their “low recoil” labels.

The THD provides excellent expansion with minimal deformation. This, along with the inherentmassive frontal area of all Brenneke slugs, is criticalin providing effective penetration and quick energy transfer.

Threats come in many forms these days, sometimesdriving a vehicle, sometimes hiding behind a wall. Urbanand CQB situations require a unique projectile—one ofunequalled penetration and stopping power at mediumranges. That’s exactly what the Brenneke® Special ForcesShort Magnum™ offers.

In independent testing, the SFSM penetrated a full 34.9"of FBI-spec ballistic gelatin. The nearest competitorcould manage only 26"…others as little as 11.2". Quitesimply, it’s the most powerful 2 3/4" load on the market.

The SFSM’s massive frontal area, exceptionally hardalloys and distinctive Brenneke weight-forwarddesign will penetrate many vehicles, doors andwalls, putting an end to the threat right here, right now. Some years ago we set out to build a reasonably pricedslug to allow high-volume shooting. What we ended upwith surprised even us. For years, the K.O.™ hasconsistently outperformed many of the most popularhigh-priced slugs in accuracy, trajectory and stoppingpower. It functions equally well in smoothbore and rifled barrels.

The K.O. is ideal for applications requiring mediumpenetration and massive, immediate stopping power. Its flat nose and wide shoulder result in expansion toalmost a full inch in diameter, stopping virtually anytarget, right now.

The K.O.’s reasonable cost and manageable recoilmakes it an ideal training round, a slug thatwon’t break your budget on the range…yet isall business in the field. In every aspect, theK.O. packs a punch.

We are often asked what function the ribsperform on the unique Brenneke design. When a Brenneke® slug passes through thethree restricted areas of a shotgun barrel(forcing cone, bore and choke), the ribs arecompressed, allowing the slug tomaintain its original cylindrical shapefor better stabilization and accuracy. They do not impart spin to the slug. This is one reason Brenneke slugs forlaw enforcement use produce equallyimpressive results from a smooth or rifledbarrel, regardless of choke.

Test results that surprised even us.

Independent ballistic testing of the K.O.™ versusother brands confirmed that the K.O.outperformed many higher-priced slugs invelocity, accuracy, and both muzzle anddownrange energy. This makes the K.O. an idealchoice as an all-around slug, particularly whencost is an issue.
