100 years of service

Dear Friends,
Thank you for supporting Marillac St. Vincent Family Services. As we celebrate our 100 years in Chicago, I want to reflect on our history in terms of light and darkness – and the hope that is at the heart of our mission.
One hundred years ago was a dark time. The world was in the throes of a war of unsurpassed brutality. In Lincoln Park and on Chicago’s west side, immigrants lived in squalid tenements. It was a dark time on so many levels. Yet, in the darkness there was light. The Daughters of Charity came here and began their work of caring for the poor and helping to lift them out of poverty. Because of our mission and the Daughters’ legacy, thousands of people have moved out of poverty and have been able to participate in the American dream.
Unfortunately, today there is still rampant poverty in our city with added elements of racism and violence that makes it difficult for people to advance and pursue their dream. In many ways, for many people, especially those whom we serve, these are dark times as they struggle to make ends meet. However, in the midst of the darkness there is light. I would like to point out some of these points of light.
First, are the folks who come through our doors each day. Most of them are highly motivated people who struggle to make ends meet, but who love their children and are doing their best to give them a bright future.
Then there are the Daughters of Charity who founded our mission and whose spirit continues to guide us today. There are fewer Daughters today, but they continue to be a source of strength and have worked mightily to pass on their charism so that we maintain the commitment to help those we serve to move out of poverty.
Our staff continues to be a source of light. Day after day they offer love and support to our children, families and seniors. When you come into Marillac or St. Vincent’s, you cannot help but feel the love and joy that permeate both centers.
Our friends and donors have been magnificent in their support. At our Beacon of Hope Luncheon, Vince Foglia gave a wonderful talk about his belief in us and what we do. We are fortunate to have such people who demonstrate such strong support.
Finally, we have a strong Board of Trustees and Associate Board. We have been blessed with strong Board leadership that has guided us – and continues to guide us – through turbulent times.
Thank you again for making Marillac St. Vincent Family Services the light in times of darkness.
Sincerely,
Bart Winters President/CEO Marillac St. Vincent Family Services

Sister Patricia Dunne, D.C. committed herself to 15 years of service at Marillac St. Vincent Family Ser-vices. She had two different roles at Marillac St.
Vincent, first in the 1970s working directly with the fami-lies and then returning in 2006 to serve as the Vice Presi-dent of Mission. Sister Patricia celebrated her 50th year as a Daughter last summer. She has been a huge part of our history and our lives as both our inspiration and our connection to why we’re here – the Daughters and the mission set forth by St. Vincent and St. Louise.
A South Side Chicago native, Sister Patricia started by traveling from Mississippi up to Marillac to run Friendly Town in the summers, a program that placed children in South Dakota for two weeks with families. She was permanently placed at Marillac House in 1977, working with the incoming families to the child care program. It was where she felt she belonged. “I loved being there. I can’t tell you. I felt like I was finally a Daughter of Char-ity.” Though it was her first time working in a community plagued with violence, she always felt safe at Marillac. At the same time, she went back to school for a degree
in social work, her passion. When she received her Mas-ters, she was missioned to other sites all over the country before being placed on the Provincial Council in Evans-ville, IN. Then, during the Marillac and St. Vincent collab-oration in the early 2000s, the Council decided a Daugh-ter was needed to teach the mission and the rich history of St. Vincent and St. Louise to employees in the organiza-tion.
And teach she did. Every employee in the organization knows the story of St. Vincent and St. Louise, thanks to Sister Patricia. As part of this work, she started the mis-sion committees that are still going strong today. Her sto-ries of her service are full of love for the children and for engaging with the history of St. Louise de Marillac and St. Vincent de Paul.
Thank you, Sister Patricia, for your 50 years of service to the people who have been touched by the love of the Daughters of Charity. We miss you, but we know the people in Emmitsburg, Maryland have been blessed with your kind words, your calming nature, and your prayers.

Stacy Rutledge is a college-
educated single mother of
two. When Stacy first enrolled
her 2-year-old son, Donovan, in
St. Vincent de Paul Center’s Early
Child Development Program in
2012, she couldn’t have imagined
how the Center would change
her life. At the time of Donovan’s
enrollment, Stacy was working in
an entry-level position in the health
care industry, but has since climbed
her way up to a management role
with her company. Now at age 4,
and in the middle of his final year
of preschool, Donovan is reading
books, solving math problems, and
possesses social skills that set him
apart from the other kids in his
low-income community. Stacy has
been able to advance in her career
with the peace of mind that her
son is in a loving and nurturing
environment. Because of the high
quality programming at Marillac
St. Vincent, Stacy is breaking the
cycle of poverty that beset the
neighborhood she grew up in on
Chicago’s South Side where she still
resides. She’s climbing the ladder
to a better future, and Marillac St.
Vincent was the first rung of that
ladder.

Dorianne Irons knew it
was time to make big
changes in her life so that
she could provide for her two
preschool daughters, Angel and
McKenzie, following her husband’s
abandonment. Struggling with
a learning disability and with no
high school diploma, Dorianne was
having a hard time finding work.
But the staff at Marillac House
helped guide her towards accessing
Temporary Assistance for Needy
Families (TANF), a job training
program, GED classes and Child
Care Assistance, so that Angel
and McKenzie would be well cared
for while she pursued her goal of
playing music and building a better
life. The road to completing her GED
has been a tough road for Dorianne,
but she gets closer every day by
going to tutoring and studying
hard. Soon she will be ready to
enter the job market and, for the
first time in her life, earn an income
and begin supporting her family on
her own. None of this would have
been possible without Marillac St.
Vincent.

Three-year-old Laura comes
to St. Vincent every day. She
walks through the doors, which
are safe and secure. She goes
to her classroom where Miss
Tonya sets her up with her Hatch
computer, which teaches her how
to read through touch screens
and has a targeted program for
literacy. Hatch Early Learning
also makes tablets specifically
designed for Preschool children,
like Keisha. These tablets
allow Keisha to log on through
a picture and play educational
games that record data about her
developmental level in several
areas, including logic, reasoning,
math, and science awareness.
Our kids report that they feel safe
at Marillac St. Vincent. This is
amazing considering the violence
that plagues the communities
we serve. In 2012, Chicago had
more homicides than any other
city in the country (500+). In 2013,
Chicago still had 400+ homicides,
surpassing New York. But, we are
able to keep our children, youth and
clients we serve safe. Our kids, like
Laura and Keisha, feel safe because
we’ve been able to enhance
safety over the past two years in
many ways. We’ve added extra
locks to the main entrance doors,
changed check-in procedures,
upgraded security cameras and
added classroom locks. This
fall, we had our first-ever lock-
down drill. Thanks to training on
safety and best practices from a
security company, teachers and
staff can protect our children
when they are inside our doors.
We want to thank Sammons
Financial Group for their gifts,
which impact over 800 children
and have made our families feel
safe and given our children access
to the most up-to-date technology
that gives them the right tools to
succeed. Because of gifts such as
those from Sammons Financial
Group, we can help to end the
cycle of poverty in Chicago.

If you know
anything about
Marillac St.

Services, you
know her
name. Dorothy
Jiganti started
volunteering
here 20 years
ago, and hasn’t looked back. She
serves on our Board, sews baby bibs,
serves on the Fleur de Lis auction
committee, and has been the driver
behind our biggest fundraising
campaign to date. We are grateful
for her service to Chicago’s most
in need. We are thankful that she
dedicated over two years of her time
to help us build the new Vince &
Pat Foglia Family and Youth Center,
create a safety net for our programs,
and establish a fund to keep our
three buildings up to date. It’s hard
to say thank you as many times as
we’d like, so we asked our staff to
use one word to describe Dorothy.
Clearly, she is worth a thousand,
but we combined the words into the
photo below.
It takes the work of hundreds of
donors to make Building Dreams a
success, but the leadership of one
woman helped make it a great
success.
Honorary Co-Chairs
We also want to thank our
Honorary Co-Chairs, Vince and
Pat Foglia, the Stephen Family
and Dan and Patty Walsh for
their commitment to this
Campaign.
Because of them and their faith in
our families, we have been able to
partner with those at risk in our
communities to help them better
their lives.
