Growth of supply chain systems has been rapid since 1990.

The major focus of growth has been on enterprise resourceplann ing (ERP) systems, w arehouse managem ent systems

(WM S), and to a lesser extent transportation managem ent sys-

tems (TMS). Wh ile the economy has slowed ou tlays for systems

over the last tw o years, it has not stifled development of a

grow ing array of solutions and their increasing functionality.

Now more th an ever the focus is to select solutions w ith suffi-

cient capabilities that can be easily implemented and provide a

quick return on investment. The internet has been a m ajor facili-

tator for t his. In the process it has forced the industry to adapt

more flexible pricing arrangements. Wit h the em ergence of

internet systems providers in the 199 0' s, w e saw a migration tomore transactional based pricing mechanisms and a correspon-

ding flood of traditional software companies developing web-

enabled solutions.

System functionality and requirements vary greatly for

potential users. Too oft en, providers focus only on the largest

companies with the most sophisticated systems needs.

How ever, required system s capabilit ies vary w idely by cus-

tom er size and supply chain complexity. A Fortune 100 com-

pany w ith a global supply chain network has dramat ically dif-

ferent systems needs than a small m anufacturer wit h one

shipping facil ity. M ost Fortune 100 comp anies w ith complexsupply chains already have implem ented an ERP system, a

WM S, and in many cases a TMS. These systems have either

been purchased directly, or, in the case of TM S and WM S,

obtained by contracting w ith a t hird-party logistics provider

(3PL) to supply the solution. In contrast, a small man ufacturer

may have an internal order m anagement and accounting sys-

tem, a capable manual warehousing operat ion, and only

mod erate needs for a decent TM S solution. M any systems

solutions have been available for large companies for th e

past f ifteen years. Thanks to increasing com petit ion and the

internet the num ber of systems available to medium and

small companies is on the rise.Over the last three years, w e have also seen an emer-

gence of systems developed by 3 PLs of fer ing a var iety of

solut ions such as a TM S that can b e purchased and u sed

v ia the w eb as a hos ted so lu t ion , o r TM S tha t costs under

$100 ,000 developed fo r med ium and smal l 3PLs and sh ip -

pers. Som e 3PLs have developed excel lent supply chain

systems for their ow n operat ions, al thou gh those are usu-

al ly not avai lable as unbu ndled systems. Because of the

in-depth knowledge gained by 3PLs performing day-to-day

order and sh ipment execut ion o perat ions, w e expect t hose

compan ies, w h ich we w i l l ca l l Supp ly Cha in Netw orkExecut ion Providers (SNEPs), to cont inue to develop robust

systems.

Up-and-coming S.N.I .P 's are creat ing new compet i t ion

for m ore establ ished providers. They of fer a b road selec-

t ion o f fu nc t ions such as mode op t im izat ion , load tender -

ing , con t rac t f i le ma in tenance, and f re igh t b i l l payment .

Others of fer systems that can p rocess orders throu gh m ul-

t ip le warehouses for mult ip le customers from a s ingle

database. Systems can interface with radio f requ ency

scanners, p rov ide e rro r de tec t ion , and e-commerce order

management . Others have deve loped tha t focus on in te r -na t iona l sh ipp ing , p rov id ing such fea tu res as a por ta l fo r

on l ine book ing and sh ipment v is ib i l i t y, t ranspor ta t ion

management th rough pr iva te ne tw orks, except ion a le r ts,

and custom ized reports.

In th is new marketplaces, many tradi t ional sof tware

companies have done wel l . With the internet and new

entrants, the market for supply chain man agement systems

is continuing to evolve and companies are being driven to

continually think in non-t raditional terms. Those that can are

succeeding and g aining in market share.
