Roy McKay: ManagerRoy is heading into his 10th year as Manager for the London Majors and in his fifth decade as a member of the Majors. Roy’s been on a winning team as a bat boy in the ’40s, pitcher in the '50s, and as a Manager in the '60s and '70s. Winning it all this year would have an extra special meaning to him. With his quiet, calming personality and a .600 plus winning percentage, Roy will keep the troops relaxed and competitive in their hunt for the Gold.

BILL SQUIRES Director of OperationsBill, a long-time friend of Manager McKay, has made him an enthusiastic Majors' fan the last few years. Like Roy, Bill is an easy going, mild mannered individual that will be very beneficial in his new duties of controlling the ball park during the games this year. Last year found Bill doing an excellent job announcing many home games, and this year he’s decided to branch out. But he'll be able to pinch hit as the voice to the fans.

MIKE RODRIGUES 3rd Base CoachAnyone who feels that a coach’s job at 3rd base is an easy one should talk to Mike. Just remembering the signs (bunt, steal, hit and run, sacrifice, take) is hard enough, but having to co-ordinate each with the player, the count, the inning, the score...and then when someone misses a sign who gets the blame?...THE COACH. Mike was a valuable addition to the Majors last year. His baseball knowledge and sense of humour have ideally suited him to his position again this year.

NORM ALDRIGE CoachHis voice echoing throughout Labatt Park is as much a part of baseball as hits, runs, and errors. Always “riding” his own players in a good natured sort of way, he has a nackfor making the youngest ball player feel right at home. Player/Coach/Manager/Trainer, over the years Norm has done it all.

WAYNE FENLON B-L T-FtIn every park throughout the Major Inter-County, even the casual fan knows the name WAYNE FENLON and with good reason. He has been calling signs behind the plate for the Majors since the mid-sixties. He hits for power, and famed for his precision bunting. Known to most as MAD DOG. or DOGGIE, Wayne sets the pace for London calling plays, aligning the defence ana na- ing the opposition. What’s in store for Wayne in ’83? Watch for the old dog to show you some new tricks.

TOM MATT1NGLEY B-R T-RTailing off slightly from his ’81 season, Tom struggled most of last year with lower back pains. Never one to complain or offer excuses, he delivered key hits when he had to while fielding his usual steady third base position. A valuable team leader Matt is raring to go in '83.

8

Page 11: $1.00 lucky

LARRY HAGGITT B-L T-RA very professional athlete through and through, Larry is one of the strongest left-handed hitters to ever play in the Major Inter-County League. He drives almost four hours back and forth from his home in Leamington just for home games which gives evidence to his dedication to the game and his team. Larry batted .330 last year, hitting 6 homers and drove in 28 runs. Hag prefers to communicate with his bat.

ARDEN EDDIE B-L T-RDid you know that in the past 15 years Arden has run over one thousand kilometres just getting between centre field and the dugout between innings. As owner of the Majors though, he will readily agree that he does even more running around off the field. An Inter-County all-star many times over, he is also the all-time base stealer in Majors’ history. Many people love the game, but few put as much time and effort into baseball as Arden.

WYATT STINSON B-R T-RProven ability as a solid senior calibre outfielder, Wyatt’s biggest problem over the last few years has been getting to the ball park. As afire-fighter for the City of London, shiftwork has been taxing, sometimes forcing him to miss3-4 games in a row. When in uniform though, he’s full of business and hoping to ignite a few Major rallies in ’83.

DAVE GREENLY B-P T-RDave's returning to London rrom a year of work and baseball in Ottawa. A solid catcher always will to leam and improve, Dave hit .375 in the Ottawa Loop. Dave’s a graduate of the very fine Byron minor system and we’re happy to have him back in London. A tireless worker, Dave is going five days a week to Fanshawe College to complete his education in Computers.

DAVE BYERS B-LT-RFor those whoVe watched Dave play before, you don’t need to be told, but for you new fans, he is one of the very best at all aspects of the game to play in the InterCounty. He can hit, hit with power, throw, field, run the bases, and has a high level of concentration. You young fellows, watch Dave and see how the game is played.

RON ST. LOUIS B-LT-RRon is new to the London area. He comes from that hot bed of talent in Windsor. He’s a short-stop by trade, but can be versatile if necessary. He’s got an excellent knowledge of the fundamentals, and is a very fine contact hitter, who can supply some power when necessary. Ronnie will only make the Majors a stronger, more competitive team.

MIKE VAN ESCH T-R B-LAnother good young ball player coming off his first year as a senior for the Majors. Mike is an agile 2nd baseman who uses his quickness to best advantage. As a hitter he slashes pitches to all fields and makes even routine ground balls very close plays at first base.

GLENN LITTLE B-R T-RA very pleasant surprise for the Majors last year, Glenn lead the team in hitting through most of '82. Showing great versatility for a first year senior Glenn saw action as an outfielder, infielder and as designated hitter. A speedy base runner and a hitter who sprays to all fields, watch for Glenn Little to reach new heights this year.

JUST A LITTLE BOYHe stands at the plat with heart pounding fast. The bases are loaded; the die has been cast.Mom and Dad cannot help him; he stands all alone.A hit at this moment would send the team home. The ball meets the plate; he swings and he misses. There’s a groan from the crowd, with some boos and some hisses.A thoughtless voice cries: ‘Strike out the bum’.Tears fill his eyes; the game’s no longer fun.So open your heart and give him a break. For it’s moments like this, a man you can make.Keep this in mind when you hear someone forget. He’s just a little boy, and not a man yet.

GOOD LUCK MAJORS IN 1983AL GUEST TrainerEveryone in the world knows him as A.G. He’s popular with the players and is always willing to help for the good of the team. A.G.’s got more energy than 10 people and has many interests. He’s the No. 1 man in the pit crew for his wife Karen’s go-cart races. He’s a very fine dart player and willing to demonstrate his talents anytime. A.G.’s also got some pretty fancy moves on the dance floor.

BARRY BOUGHNER B-R T-RBarry is one of those gifted athletes that can play any sport well. A former N H L. hockey player that has had a remarkable coaching record since retiring, Boughie’s first love has always been baseball. He’s coming back after a three-year layoff and the last time he returned after such an absence from the league, he hit .384; good for fourth in the league and first all-star D.H. Bougie can play any position, so he will be most valuable in our quest to win the championship in 1983.

JON OWEN Pit. T-RJon finished with the fourth best E.R.A. in the league last year. He possesses the best fork ball inthe league and with his good curve and fastball always has himn at or near the top of the league in strike-outs. Jon’s been the cornerstone of the Majors’ pitching staff for years and is still only 24. If he pitched for another five or six years, he’s have every I.C. record nailed down. One of the true gentlemen of the league, we all hope he’s around for a long time.

RICH BUDDEN Bat BoyBaseball is just one of the sports Richie loves. He is a goalie in hockey and a quick-footed soccer player. Rich always has some words of encouragement for the players as he hustles around chasing bats and helmets. Richie does the little things that help so much before, during and after the game, allowing the players to have the freedom to concentrate.

Perhaps more than any other sport, baseball offers fans the chance to identify with the athletes. Often much of that identification is simply in the nicknames of the players. So as you enjoy tonight’s London Majors game, you might like to test your powers of identification by matching the following players and nicknames. You won’t find the answers in the program because true baseball fans won’t need them. Good luck and good luck to the Majors in ’83...

CHUCK WESTMAN Bfi T-R1983 being his first year of senior eligibility, Chuck would like to land and outfield position. Good speed and a powerful throwing arm are his two finest assets.

MIKE PATTERSON Pitcher T-RComing off a great season with the Servicemaster Juniors where he accumulated a record of 10-1, this young right-hander could be seeing a lot of action this year as both a starter and reliever.

JOHN FARRINGER B-R T-LA smooth fielder with a history of good power throughout his junior career, John saw action with the Majors last season as both a pitcher and outfielder.

DOUG O’BOYLE Pitcher T-RHere’s a fellow that just rolled in one day on his unicycle from Saginaw last spring and commenced to turn the league inside-out. He finished with a 102 regular season record and won six more games in the playoffs. He’s an extremely likeable young man and we’re happy to have him back in uniform this year.

28

Page 31: $1.00 lucky

JOHN FINLAY B-R T-RNow here’s a fellow that comes to play. John, a native of Houston, Texas, was recommended by a past Majors’ star, Billy Breene. John has a strong accurate arm and fields his catching position very well. You want to watch the way he attacks the ball when he’s at the plate. That’s how the ball should be hit. John’s a born leader and should provide the Majors with some much needed right-handed power.

DAVE GODWIN Pitcher T-RAnother of the baseball Godwins, Gabby is small in stature, but don’t let that fool you. He’s got a sneaky fast, fastball, a good curve and very good control. The latter makes him valuable as a relief pitcher as well as a spot starter. Dave’s a fierce competitor, and with a year’s experience under his belt, will prove very valuable to the Majors in 1983.

ALEX MCKAY B-R T-RAl, always a pleasure to be around (he comes from good stock) has been improving at his 2nd base position and at the plate in leaps and bounds. The no-doubt to be famed double-play trio—Byers to McKay to Haggitt has been killing rallies regularly for the pasttwo years and should cause opponents some grief again this year. Al, has a pleasing sense of humour and when you get within earshot of his quick wit and snappy retorts, they’re guaranteed to keep you loose.

NEIL FENLON Bat BoyNeil’s dad, Wayne, has had him around the ball park almost since he was born. So, it's only natural he became a bat boy for the Majors. The way his dad plays, if he has any talent as a ballplayer, he could be playing with his dad one day.
