Dear Friends,

It’s amazing to think we are already in week three of the season of Advent. Advent has long been one of my favorite times in the liturgical year, particularly because of the new growth and development in our hearts as we await the coming of Jesus. As we prepare as a parish, I need to stop to thank you as parishioners for your overwhelming generosity to the poor and needy during these holidays. After an incredible generosity at the time of thanksgiving, you have now also reached out in incredible ways for the Christmas season. I just walked through the hallways of Manion Hall, our social ministry outreach center. The hallways are literally lined with piles of gifts to be delivered to the poor so that they have something as a sign of the generosity of Jesus on Christmas morning. You have outdone yourselves - and I’m a proud pastor to know we were able to contribute so generously to the needy.

Last week on Sunday afternoon, I went with my cousin Jake and his girlfriend Courtney down to Pungo in Virginia Beach in order to chop down a Christmas tree for the rectory. It hearkened back to a tradition that is often forgotten, where families would spend time together choosing and then erecting a Christmas tree in their homes. We were unsuccessful as they had just closed the lot that day so the trees could grow for next year. Jake and I wanted to go back in the dark of night and chop one down anyway and leave some cash, but virtue directed our hearts to another lot where we found a very nice tree which Courtney picked out. Father Miguel and I then decorated the tree late on Sunday night while enjoying a delicious treat prepared by our Dominican Sisters. Father Peter was already asleep by the time we got to the tree, but he promises next year to put the star on top! It’s so good to be in the rectory with other priests and to feel the spirit of the season of Advent.

Saturday of this week was my father’s birthday - the first birthday since he died this summer. I’d be grateful for you to continue to pray for the repose of his soul. Jim Beeman was a quietly faithful man who raised his boys well and provided for his wife in incredible ways. Please pray also for my mom Liz, as many of you know who are widows or widowers know, the first holidays are often the hardest.

I’m grateful for the life of this incredible parish! Have a great third week of Advent.

Faithfully in Christ,

Father Dan

Becoming Catholic

The Period of the Catechumenate is aimed at forming catechumens in the Christian way of life. Those preparing for Christian initiation learn in many ways – listening, observing, and living with the community. (The word catechumen, the name for those preparing for Baptism, comes from a Greek word meaning “to hear.”) They learn through the proclamation of the Word of God, at Mass and outside of Mass. They learn through faith sharing with others, exploring what the Gospel means and how it is coming to life in their lives. They learn through weekly gathering focused on learning the faith with their sponsors. They learn through informal conversations with their godparents or sponsors or other Catholic friends. They learn through taking part in active service alongside other Christian believers.

Welcoming the catechumens into parish activities not only makes them feel included, it also provides them glimpses of the life of disciples. The faithful are invited to pray for the catechumens throughout the week. Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary December 19th The Women’s Bible Study will pray with our Blessed Mother Mary, this Advent. Ascension Press offers a new program specifically written to help us prepare for Jesus’ birth as Mary did. It guides you through Mary’s experiences and encounters and sheds light on how they relate to our preparation for Christmas. Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary, with Fr. Mark Toups pairs thought provoking and meaningful meditations with beautiful artwork and encouraging, inspirational videos. All women of the parish are invited to this Advent Study on Thursdays from 9:30am-11:30am at Saint Michael Hall. Please contact Teresa May with any questions or to reserve childcare (ages 1-3 yrs): [email protected] or call 757-897-1088. Not available during the day? We have a few extra copies of “Rejoice! Advent Meditations with Mary” with online videos you can watch from home. Contact Christa at the parish office to reserve your copy.

If you have an IRA and you’re 70 ½ years old, you can make a gift to our parish through an IRA Charitable Rollover. It helps you and helps us. How it helps you: it can lower your taxable income, count towards your required minimum distribution, and help you feel good about giving to our parish. How it helps us: we can put your gift to use right away in providing financial support to our ministries throughout the parish. For more information, call your IRA administrator, tax preparer or the parish office.
