Agricultural Research Service scientists at the Fort Keogh Livestock andRange Research Laboratory (LARRL) in Miles City, Montana have been con-ducting several studies surrounding cattle production; one of which is de-signed to make cattle production more efficient.Reducing production costs hinges on maintaining high rates of reproductivesuccess while reducing use of harvested feeds. A common problem cow-calfproducers face is low rebreeding performance among 2- and 3-year old cows.This occurs when cows needs for additional nutrients during pregnancy andlactation have not been met. But rather than just feed young cows more, theLARRL scientists are attempting to make them more efficient so theyll needless feed.

According to animal scientist Andrew Roberts and colleagues, heifers theystudied developed to reach target weights lower than those traditionally rec-ommended, consumed 27 percent less feed over the winter months, andgained weight more efficiently throughout the post-weaning period and subse-quent grazing season. “The strategy of providing less feed may reduce costsof developing each replacement heifer by more than $31 and extend their lifespan, with important ramifications for lifetime efficiency and profitability,” saysRoberts.

“For the last 3 to 4 decades, the mantra has been feed them to breedthem, which means providing enough feed during the first year to ensure thatyoung heifers reach puberty to start reproducing,” he says. “But our studiesindicate this doesnt seem to be optimal in the long run. Our research showsthat by feeding to get all the animals bred, you are also propping up the ineffi-cient animals – those that wont consistently produce calves when put in nutri-ent-limited environments later in life.”

In their study, the heifers were divided into two lifetime treatment groups.The control group was fed to industry guidelines; and the restricted group wasfed (on a body-weight basis) 80 percent of feed consumed by their controlcounterparts for 140 days, ending when they were 1 year old. The restrictedheifers grew slower and weighed less at any point in time as a consequenceof less feed. The actual amount of feed provided to the restricted group overthe entire feeding period was about 73 percent of that provided to the controls.

Final pregnancy rates were 87 percent for the restricted heifers and 91percent for the controls.

From breeding through late fall, the heifers were managed as one group.Each winter, the pregnant animals were again separated into two groups – re-stricted feed and control. The restricted cows were fed 20 percent less sup-plemental feed during the winter months than the controls. The scientistspredicted that these treatments would allow nature to decide which heiferswere reproductively efficient: Less efficient heifers would eventually fail to re-produce and be culled if restricted, whereas feeding more would keep them inproduction but result in more expense for the producer.

“Early elimination of inefficient breeders allows them to be harvested forthe high-quality meat market,” says Roberts. Roberts and colleagues alsofound that restricting the cows at a young age might improve their efficiencythroughout the rest of their life.

The restricted-feed study has been ongoing since 2001, and the re-searchers are now looking at the second generation – those that were bornfrom cows on restricted diets. “An interesting thing occurred: The feed restric-tion seems to have made the second generation able to withstand restrictionwith greater efficiency,” says Roberts.In cattle, maximum production (measured by weight of calf at weaning)doesnt peak until 5 years of age. In this study, the proportion of cows that be-came pregnant each year, and stayed in the herd until age 5 was greatest forrestricted cows out of restricted dams. Restricted cows from control-fed damshad the lowest rate of survival to age 5.

The researchers found that the third-generation feed-restricted calves arelighter at birth and at weaning than those calves from cows fed at the industrystandard, but the feed-restricted cows themselves areslightly fatter and heavier at the calves weaning.“Physiologically, the second-generation restricted cow isconserving some of the nutrients taken in for body reserves,which may result in more efficient reproduction and bettersurvivability in the herd,” says Roberts.

The replacement heifers here at Chapman Cattle Co.are treated similar to the LARRL protocol, and I would con-cur with the findings of Roberts and colleagues. As we con-tinue to pressure these cattle environmentally, the long-termgenerational efficiencies will not only become more evidentwithin our own cowherd, but will become even more trans-missible to our customers via the Forage-tested bulls offeredannually through our sale. The Advantages of Forage-Developed Bulls

What is a 100% ‘Forage-Developed Bull’? This is a bull that has been developed and tested for his abilityto perform on an all forage (grass/hay) diet. Typically,most bulls are developed and tested on a high concen-trate (grain) ration similar to the rations used to fattencattle in a feedlot. Even claims of a high-roughage dietmay not accurately define how that bull has been developed. It is common knowledge that these hot feedlot rations will negatively affect a bull’s fertility, digestivesystem and liver function, as well as the soundness ofhis feet and legs. It stands to reason, the bulls that perform best in aforage-raised environment should sire cattle that arealso more efficient foragers. Therefore, this is a very important economic trait for ranchers who produce theirown replacement females to select for. Chapman Cattle Company started marketing forage-tested bulls in 2006. Why? the reasons are twofold.First, we believed in the basic concept of forage testingour maternal genetics since we were already moving ourcowherd towards a grass-based production system. Second, it provided a way for us to market our latespring born bull calves as long yearlings. The bulls are initially weaned in November wherethey begin their forage testing. They are roughedthrough their first winter on mixed hay with little, or no,protein supplement. This stage of development alwaysdoes an excellent job of “separating the men from theboys”. The bulls will spend their second summer on an all-grass diet. It’s not uncommon for them to gain over 2pounds per day during the summer. In October, the bullscome off grass and are weighed. This marks the end oftheir forage test. Since the bulls are run in large groups,our ratios should accurately reflect their true geneticmerit when comparing gain.

At the end of their forage test, the less efficient and unadapted bulls are culled, as well as those withstructural problems. Most of the survivors will be offered for sale in our spring bull sale with a completebreeding soundness guarantee. Although this program has an extremely high falloutrate, we believe it is the best way to performance testour maternal genetics. There are several obvious advantages to using older,forage-tested bulls. Since these bulls are older and moremature they are able to handle a heavier workload.Since they are in range condition, in contrast to beingoverweight, they’re able to maintain or gain weight during their first breeding season. Many customershave reiterated testimonials how their Chapman bullwas the only bull not to lose condition throughout thebreeding season. Since these bulls have never been confined tosmaller pens and/ or forced to eat a high concentrate ration, they will be much healthier and will last muchlonger. Bull longevity is an extremely important economic trait. Ultimately, since these bulls have proven their

ability to survive and perform in an all-forage environment, they should pass that genetic potential on to their offspring.
