10 Ways to Vacation in Your Own Backyard

Summertime is here and it’s time to head out for those summer vacations, right? If you’re a retired empty-nester like me, or if funds are a little short this year, summer is a time to avoid the crowds by vacationing in place. Here are my favorite ways to have a great staycation.

Local attractions. Think of yourself as a tourist in your hometown. Look at your region as an outsider would using Google, Wikipedia or VirtualTourist. You might be surprised at the hidden gems to explore right in your very backyard.

Summer reading list. Grab a hammock or a chair in the shade and make a dent on that summer reading list. Who needs a great view when your nose is stuck in a book anyway?

Gardening or DIY projects. Alright, this may not sound like fun, but think of the satisfaction you’ll get relaxing in your beautiful garden or finally getting that home project completed before the summer months run out.

Local Parks, Gardens or Hiking Trails. Get out and enjoy nature whether home is in a city or the country. There are always ways to find public areas open to strolling through nature when the weather turns warm.

Public pools. Even if you can’t make it to the beach, don that bathing suit and head out to the pool. Swimming is great exercise, and pools are a good and cheap place to socialize with friends.

Sunbathe at home. Catching a few rays in your own backyard can mean, well, fewer tan lines, wink-wink. Just make sure you use suntan lotion, especially on the areas that don’t usually see so much daylight, and you might want to verify that the place you consider remote and private really is.

Summer sports. Try your hand at croquet, badminton, tennis, or softball. Enjoy a pick up game with friends or join local leagues for a more competitive experience.

Cookouts and picnics. Summer is all about dining al fresco. Light the BBQ to grill some steaks or just a few quick hamburgers. Go on a picnic and share your bounty with the local ant population – they’ll love you for it.

Summer days lead to summer nights. Watch for fireflies just after sunset or light a bonfire to roast s’mores.

Do Nothing. After all, vacations should be all about the relaxation, right?
