I bow down to Lord Shiva, who is the creator and protector of the universe, who is the greatest among Gods, who has three eyes, who is the annihilator of all the three worlds, one whose throat is blue, who is the conqueror of death, whois the Lord of all, who is propitious who is possessed of all marks of greatness and who is the greatest among Gods. =======================================================Then the question arises, "Who is Shiva?"

The divine consciousness pervading all the living beings is none other than Shiva.

This Shivattwa (divine consciousness) permeates not only human beings, but the birds, beasts and animals as well. In fact, every moment in our life can be takento be Shivarathri. 2005

For every act of sin, five persons are mainly responsible. One who commits the sin,

one who is the cause, one who encourages the act of sin,one who shows the ways and means to commit the sin,and one who witnesses it.

All five will have to face the consequenceszas

Sathya Sai Speaks, Volume 32 part1 28=========================================Without doubt, Maha Shivaratri is one of the greatest festivals in the Hindu calendar, and the holiest day for all Shaivites. In a given solar year, there are actually twelve (or thirteen) Shivaratris, one per lunar month. SHIVARATRI OCCURS

WHENEVER THE FOURTEENTH LUNAR DAY OF THE WANING MOON (KRSNA PAKSHA CHATURDASHI)IS IN EFFECT AT MIDNIGHT LOCAL TIME.(de un blog shivadasrhana)You will be observing Sivaratri in the true spirit of theterm only when you give up bad qualities and cultivate divinelove.

=====================================================Today we are celebrating Sivarathi. What does it mean?Ratri (night) is associated with darkness. The Vedas declare,

Chandrama Manaso Jatha, Chaksho Suryo Ajayatha (themoon was born out of the mind and the sun out of the eyes ofthe Purusha). Moon is the presiding deity of the mind. So,mind should be pure and unsullied. There is an immense sig-nificance in every statement of Vedanta. Confusion prevailswhen these are misunderstood.

How can you expect positive results when your heart is fullof negative feelings? External is the reflection of the internal. You will reap what you sow. Having eaten mango, how canyou expect the belch of a cucumber? So, in order to get posi-tive results you should fill your heart with positive feelings.Love, peace, and compassion, which originate from the heart, are positive in nature. All the negative thoughts are the prod-ucts of the head.

There is a specific time for this. It may take place at anymoment between 8 and 10 in the night. It takes place at theright time irrespective of the place I am in. It is bound to takeplace. It is natural on Sivaratri night. Those who are fortunateto witness this sacred Lingodbhava are freed from all sins. Onemust see how it emerges. But, some people may not be able tosee this even if they are sitting close by. Witnessing the emer-

gence of the Lingam is of utmost importance. Once it emerges, everyone will be able to see it and it has its own benefits. There are many such important aspects attached to this auspi-cious occasion. You will be immensely benefited if you keep awake andsing the glory of God at least on this night. Moon is the pre-siding deity of the mind. Moon has 16 kalas (phases). OnShivaratri, 15 kalas merge in God and only one remains. Byconstant remembrance of God, the 16th phase also merges inGod. Can you not spend a single night in the whole year sing-ing the glory of God? Sanctify this night by participating inbhajan. The bliss that you get from bhajan, the sweetness youexperience in the divine name, the happiness you derive from

visualising the divine form cannot be obtained elsewhere. Eve-rything is possible only through love. So, cultivate love andsanctify your life.

Self-confidence cannot be purchased or obtained throughlearning. It is based on deservedness. Develop the divinethoughts to attain deservedness. In fact, you are the most fortu-nate people. Otherwise, how could only a few thousand of youhave come here when there are millions in this world? Makethe best use of this golden opportunity. Follow the divine path.If you have faith in God, He will protect you in the face of alladversities. He is always with you, in you, above you, beside

you, around you.Do not give scope for bad feelings and bad thoughts. Donot criticise anyone. You are well aware of the fact that every-day in the newspapers you find headlines describing the con-flicts between various parties. One party criticises and findsfaults with the other. They are accumulating sins by doing so.That is why I do not read newspapers. Why should I gothrough all this? Many people waste so much money buyingthese newspapers. It is a form of madness. Read good books.Slander is the worst of the sins.

All spiri-tual practices such as japa (chanting the Lords name) and tapa(penance) will be of no avail if senses are not controlled. Youmay be under the impression that it is not possible for a humanbeing to control the senses. Here control does not mean totalcessation. Discharge your duties as a householder, student orbusinessman. But whatever you do, do it with a feeling that itis to please God (Sarva Karma Bhagavath Preethyartham).Once you develop this feeling, all your senses will naturally becontrolled

Sath is associated with the Atmaand Chith with the body. The Atma is Purusha (Brahman) andthe body is prakrti (feminine principle). The unity of Purushaand Prakriti is human life. So, every human being is ardhanareeshwara (androgyn-ous). The Principle of Siva (Sivathatwa) teaches the unity ofPrakriti and Purusha. This is the true meaning of Sivaratri.

Forgetting this principle, man considers this physical body tobe made up of merely blood, flesh and fecal matter. No doubt,it has these constituents, but one should not forget the fact thatdivinity permeates this body. To set an ideal to this world, thebody is very important.

All My actions are selfless, selfless, selfless. There is no trace of selfish-ness in Me. Have firm faith in this truth. If you have total faith, wherever you are, all your desires will be fulfilled withoutyour asking. Only those who dont have total faith suffer. De-velop self-confidence. That is the first sadhana you have toundertake.

Truly you are all most fortunate. Today is Somavar (Mon-day), very endearing to Somasekhara (Eswara). That is whySiva is extolled as Someshwara and Somasekhara.

DD 17 Feb 96The one Divine is responsible for the threefold cosmic process. This three aspectsof God can be seen in the English word GOD.G represents Generation--Srishti.O represents Organization-------Sthithi.D represents Dissolution--Layam.

    4/11

GOD represents the unity of the three aspects.

There is a misunderstanding about these three. Layam is considered as destruction or dissolution. Its real meaning is mergence.O represents organization. It means protection.G stands for generation (creation). Brahma, Vishnu and Eeshvara are threepotencies lmmanent in man. Tounderstand this it is essential to follow the spiritual path. Spirituality does not mean leading alonely ascetic life. Spirituality means getting rid of attachment and hatred andlooking upon the

whole humanity as one. Every one should understand this inner meaning of spirituality.

The human birth is intended for the pursuit of Dharma.Dharma implies harmony in thought, word and deed. When every person realiseshis essentialdivine nature, the entire world will be transformed. The body and the mind are mere instruments.Man's reality is the Aathma (Self).

The principle teaching of the Vedhas is that all men should strive together in harmony and share

their joys together in amity. Through unity, humanity can achieve purity, leading to divinity. Thethree great enemies of man are lust, anger and greed. These have to be eliminated. The greatestquality in man is love. Love is God. Live in love.

. Man today does not know what Sathya and Dharma are. Dharma is taken to be duty

. This interpretation is not correct. This is only an English translation, rather inadequately expressed!

The real interpretation of Dharma is Dharayati iti Dharma (that which sustains is Dharma). It sustains the human life.

Sathya (Truth) emerges from the Hridaya Nabhi (Heart region) of a human being. Thus, when a man led a life of Sathya and Dharma, he will become sacred. The Pandavas and Droupadi led such a noble life by following Sathya and Dharma. All yourpresent difficulties and humiliations are due to non adherence to Dharma.

Lord Shiva has. Lord Shiva however, chose to name the child as "Amrutaputra" (son of immortality). In fact, every human being is an Amrutaputra. Even the Upanishads declare him so. The Upanishads reveal the true identity of a human being byaddressing as Srunvantu Viswe Amrutasya Putrah (Oh the children of immortality!Listen).

Dear Devotees and Students! You are also Amrutaputras, not Anrutaputras (sons of immortality, not falsehood). One who is an Amrutaputra is not affected by change and death. You verily arethe embodiments of the changeless, eternal principle.

Once Mother Parvati was putting child Ganapati to sleep by rocking the cradle and singing a lullaby, "Oh Amrutaputra! Sleep my dear! Sleep. If you are awake, the whole world will be awake." Lakshmidevi, the consort of Lord Vishnu came thereand witnessed the scene. She felt that it was rather a strange lullaby. She enquired about the name of the child and Parvati told her that His name was Amrutaputra. Lakshmidevi further enquired from where did she get that name. Parvati replied that it was Lord Shiva who gave that name to the child.

One who had descended from Easwarattwa is Easwara Himself.

You are all Amrutaputras. Hence, constantly remain under that awareness. Proclaim yourself to be Amrutaputras. Whatever name has been already given to you, prefix that name with "Amrutaputra"

People call Him "Kailasavasi" (the Lord who resides in Kailasa). Where is Kailasa? It is only when you contemplate on Him in the depth of silence that you can visualise Lord Easwara in Kailasa. Therefore, one has to practise "Mouna" (silence). And that silence implies total stillness of thought and word

Shiva Purana further says that performing abhisheka of Shiva Linga with six different dravyas including milk, yoghurt, honey, ghee, sugar and water while chanting Sri Rudram, Chamakam and Dasa Shanthi pleases Lord Shiva the most. Accordingto the mythology, each of these dravya used in the abhisheka blesses a unique quality:Milk is for the blessing of purity and piousness.Yogurt is for prosperity and progeny.Honey is for sweet speech.Ghee is for victory.Sugar is for happiness.Water is for purity.

    Teacher of Teachers

Sivarathri is observed every month, on the fourteenth night of the dark half; for the moon which is the presiding deity of the human mind, has only just one night more to be a non-entity, with no influence on the agitation of the Mind. In the month of Magha, the fourteenth night is named Maha (Great) Sivarathri, for, it is sacred for another reason too. It is the day on which Siva takes the LingaForm, for the benefit of seekers. Siva is revered as the form which is to be adored for the acquisition of Jnana of Wisdom. Jnana Maheswaraad Icched, as the Ved

as advise. Pray to Siva for enlightenment, through wisdom. So, do not treat thisday lightly, and reduce the disciplines prescribed by the sages for its celebration, such as fast and vigil and uninterrupted recital of the name of God, intoa routine ritual, or a change for picnic, revelry, rivalry or factious fun. Contemplate this day and this night, on the Atma Linga, which emanates from Siva, the Jyothi Linga, the symbol of the supreme light of wisdom, and be convinced thatSiva is in every one of you. Let that vision illumine your inner consciousness.

A fence is necessary to protect growing crops; but, when no crop is growing, whyspend time and money on a fence? The orange is covered by a rind which is not very tasty, in order to protect it from too early consumption. Outer ritual is prescribed to shelter the inner message from being tampered with. Sivarathri too l

ike all other holy days in the Hindu and other religious calendars has many suchouter ceremonial observances and a deep core of inner significance. But, humannature prefers the easier path of outer formality to the path of inner discipline and direct experience.

Visiting Siva shrines, arranging for worship through priests of Siva Lingams, pouring sanctified waters, potfuls of them over consecrated idols, fasting, vigiland such other activities are resorted to on this day. But, these are not quiterelevant to the real purpose of the festival. To fulfil these rites and vows, one need not wait one full year and consult the astrologer and his calendar of holy days. When man takes in food four times a day, in order that his body may keepfunctioning efficiently, is it too much to ask him to feed the mind with good t

houghts and godly acts, at least once every day?. The mind too needs clean and sustaining food.

Consider the significance of the form that Siva has assumed for human adoration:In His neck, He has the holocaust---producing poison, Halahala, that can destroy all life in a trice. On His head, He has the sacred Ganga River, whose waterscan cure all ills, here and hereafter. On His forehead, He has the eye of fire.On His head, He has the cool comforting moon. On His wrists, ankles, shoulders and neck He wears deadly cobras, which live in life--giving breath of air. Siva l

ives in the burial ground and the burning ghat, the Rudrabhumi, as it is called--the land of Siva or Rudra. The place is no area of dread; it is an auspicious area, for all have to end their lives there, at the close of this life or a few more lives. Siva is teaching you that death cannot be shunned or frightened away.It has to be gladly and bravely met.

Siva, again, is said to go about with a begging bowl. He teaches that, renunciation, detachment, indifference to good fortune or bad, these are the paths to attain Him. Siva is known as Mrtyunjaya, He who vanquishes death. And He is also the Kaamaari, the destroyer of desire. These two names show that he who destroys desire can conquer death, for desire breeds activity, activity breeds consequence, consequence breeds bondage, bondage results in birth and birth involves death.

Iswara is also symbolized in the Linga Form, Lings is derived from the Sanskritroot, Li, means Leeyathe, 'merges'; it is the form in which all forms merge. Siva is the goal who blesses beings with the most desirable gift of meaning in theuniverse. That is the end, the death, which one should strive for, the end whichSiva can vouch-safe. Realize the God in you first; then, if you involve yourself with the material world, no harm can come to you, for you will recognize the objective world as but the body of God. But, if you try to involve yourself withthe objective world first, and then try to discover God who is material only. Again, you can direct your spiritual efforts in either of two ways: endeavor to re

ach you. Follow the commands of God, and He will be pleased to raise you up. Follow the path of inquiry and discover where He resides, and realize Him there. You can follow either means. But, reaching Him is the inescapable task of man.

Siva means, graciousness; auspiciousness; Mangalam. He is all graciousness, everauspicious, Sarva Mangalam. That is the reason why the epithet, Sri, which indicates these qualities, is not added to the name Siva, Sankara, lsvara etc. It isadded to the number of Avatars, for they have taken on perishable bodies for aspecific purpose. They have to be distinguished from other humans, by the epithet, Siva is eternally gracious, auspicious, mangala and so the epithet is superfluous. Siva is adored as the teacher of teachers, Dakshinamurti. The form of Sivais itself a great lesson in tolerance and forbearance.

The Halahala poison is hidden by Him in His Throat; the beneficent moon which all welcome, He has worn on His Head. This is a lesson for man to keep away from others all harmful tendencies and to use for their benefit all useful tendenciesthat he can command. If one uses his skills for his own advance, and his evil propensities for putting down others, he is only taking the road to ruin.

Man is inherently Divine; he ought therefore demonstrate in thought, word and deed the Divine attributes of love, tolerance, compassion and humanity. God is Truth; man too must live in Truth. God is Love; man too must live in Love, eschewing anger. Master hatred through Love; master anger through sweet tolerance. There

are many who bargain with God, and offer Him gifts of money or articles if He would confer Grace. If one believes that God can be mollified by the gift of a coconut or a purse of 116 rupees, I wonder what kind of God he has in his mind? Ishis conception of God so mean, so contemptible? Those who plan to have their desires granted through riches can never deserve the name, devotee. Those who encourage the payment of money for spiritual gains or for gaining Divine favor are also to be condemned. This is the reason why the Gita lays down that God will bepleased by offering leaf, flower or fruit or even a drop of water. But even these four articles are materials.

  • 7/29/2019 10 Shivaratri Sandesh 2

    8/11

The Gita does not intend that you should pluck a leaf or flower or a fruit fromsome plant or tree and place it before God. Nor does it ask you to bring water from a well or river or the roadside tap. The leaf is your own body, which like the leaf, sprouts greens, fades, and finally falls off from the branch. The flower is the heart freed from the insect pests of lust, anger, greed, attachment, pride, hate etc. The fruit is the mind, the consequence of its yearnings, which have to be dedicated to God. The water is the stream of tears that flow from the eyes when one is in ecstatic Bliss at the contemplation of, God's glory. Giving these four is the real act of surrender, Saranagathi. The offering of leaves or flowers or fruits or river water is at best a way of helping the plant or tree orriver to secure a little merit.

There are some who declare glibly, "O, I have surrendered my body, mind, intellect, my everything to God". These people have no control over their minds and theemotions and passions they are filled with They have no mastery over their reason. They are not even able to regulate their bodies. So, it is indeed ridiculousfor them to claim that they have offered them to God. How can they give to Godwhat is not theirs? What right have they? How can any one accept the gift of something which does not belong to the giver'?

In fact, you need not surrender anything at all. Love all beings---that is enoug

    h. Love with no expectation of return; love for the sake of love; love because your very nature is love; love because that is the form of worship you know and like. When others are happy, be happy likewise. When others are in misery, try toalleviate their lot to the best of your ability. Practice love through Seva. Bythis means, you will realize unity and get rid of the ego that harms.

    God, the Source of Good

Shivarathri is a very auspicious day for all. It is the fourteenth day of the lunar fortnight when the moon is waning and the sun is in the sign of Aquarius. The festival is, however, related to the moon rather than the sun. That is the reason why it is called Shivarathri, the night of Shiva. Unlike other nights, thisparticular night is the night of consecration, of dedication, of illumination.

The mind is intimately associated with the moon. Chandra, the deity of the moon,is the presiding deity of the mind. He loses one sixteenth of his brilliance every day after the full moon day and continues waning until on this night he is left with just one sixteenth of his power. The waned moon may be taken to stand for the mind with all its wild fancies and waywardness reduced after it has beenconquered by spiritual discipline. On this night there is just a minute part mor

e to be conquered and that can be done by keeping vigil and dwelling on the glory of God. The vigil that is prescribed is symbolic of the eternal vigil one hasto observe, while the rite of fasting is symbolic of divesting the senses of thepleasures for which they crave. The nightlong devotional singing is significantof the life-long consciousness of the Divine Presence that every one should cultivate. The rites and vows laid down for Shivarathri being absent on other nights of the year, their observance on this day comes as a reminder that they are useful.

You must realize that devotional singing, reflection on the name of God, and off

erings at the lotus feet are not for pleasing or propitiating God, but for our own spiritual progress.

Recitation of the Divine attributes only enables us to dwell on elevating idealsand approximate ourselves more and more to the Divinity that is our nature. Webecome what we contemplate. By constant thought an ideal gets imprinted on our heart. When we fix our thoughts on the evil that others do, our mind gets polluted by the evil. When, on the contrary, we fix our mind on the virtues or well being of others, our mind is cleansed of wrong and entertains only good thoughts. No evil thought can penetrate the mind of a person wholly given to love and compassion. The thoughts we indulge in shape our nature; along with others, they affect us too. For example, when a flash is released to photograph someone, his faceis lit; but so, too, to a certain extent, is the face of the photographer. Immerse your mind in good thoughts and the world will be good; soak it in bad thoughts and the world will be bad for you. So, recollect only good; do, think, andplan only good; speak and act only good. Then as a result you will approximate God, the source of all good. This is the message of Shivarathri.

The very Divine principle which seekers strive to visualize by means of years ofasceticism and renunciation is before you, here and now; realize the good fortune you are endowed with. I have this day, the holy day of Shivarathri, granted pardon for all the errors you have fallen into knowingly or unknowingly up to thi

s time. Have auspicious thoughts, speak auspicious words, and do auspicious deeds. And as a result of this, attain the embodiment of auspiciousness, Shiva Himself.

    =======================

Symbolic Meaning of Lord Shiva to MeWhen I look at an image of Lord Shiva, it seems to reveal something to my innerself, as it does to all living beings, blessed to know about him, blessed to beable to worship him. To begin with, he is the only powerful deity, who does notadorn jewels, clothes, or surround himself with luxuries. He dresses in just a tiger skin, just bare-basic clothing for survival, no ornaments, gold, gems or cr

owns. His first outright message is to disengage the mind from distractions of wealth, temporary beauty image, and luxury that maya traps us into and we so willingly stay chained into, and we waste our time running after.

His message is to refrain from getting too materialistic and to understand thatsimplicity is a sign of power. He is so powerful, yet so humble and simple in his persona.

His half open and tied tresses, show how he does let his hair-down, stay calm, enjoy surroundings, and he wants us to live each day as it comes, enjoying the moment, yet his half tied tresses, indicate, we should continue to do our duty, atour pace. His tied hair, continuously saves the Earth from the powerful flow ofthe river Ganga. If he gives up his dharma, the entire earth will submerge. So,

it indicates a middle path of doing one's duty continuously, inside us, the quest to seek the divine should never die. Keep the thirst and quest on, keep doingyour duties to others, yet, enjoying the beauty and joys that surround us.

The Moon on his head, might indicate that he lives on the highest point, on Earth, Mt. Kailash, that he lives close to us, and every night the moon transiting the night sky, is worn by the head of the almighty who is also watching over us,

every second. He saved the moon from the curse of Daksha and thus gave the Moona place to stay.

The nilakanth, or his blue neck, with the story of his drinking hala-hal vrish from the samudra manthan, could tell a human, that vaani/speech can be like vrishor poison, and should always be under check. So many karmas turn bad, just dueto bad words emitted in the heat-of-a-moment and the snake in his neck is a motivation for us to arouse our kundalini shakti. The three and a half coiled snake,we see so many times, is that bhujangini shakti- kundalini shakti, that can activate the sleeping parts of the brain, elevating us from the current level and helping us reach our divine God.

Vanmalaa or garland in his neck, indicates his love for nature, his love for Dance, Music, drama and beauty, which show his artistic sides. It also indicates, his soft side within.

His trident or Trishul with three spears, could be an indicator or symbol of destroying all three gunas, the Rajo, Tamo and Sattva Guna. He is motivating us totry and rise above the ebb and flow of the three gunas. The Trishul can also mean he wants us to reach for moksha, by killing the present, past and future, which are symbolised by the three spears of trishul.

His third eye, or activated Ajna chakra, sends the message to meditate, and withthe opening of this pineal gland chakra, shall all our karmas, moha, lobh, krodh, and kaam , be destroyed.

His Damru (hand drum), is like a wake up call, asking us to wake up from this muddle of maya, that it is high time, we humans utilize this yoni, yog, opportunity and get out of this endless cycle of sufferings, to go back home to Ananda state and start working towards the real goal of life.

The bells on his waist, are a reassuring sign, that when we will walk through the dark jungle of tapas, of mediation we will not walk alone, through the sides,by our side, he will walk us through it. His presence will be felt deep in the s

tate of samadhi, he will make us feel it.

Nandi ji - the Bull - can indicate the male energy. The cow is the most preciouspossession for mankind and the Bull is thus the male other half of this nurturing cow. Milk, butter, ghee and so much more comes from cows, but the Bull is thesilent father who does contribute. He also ploughs the land, that then becomesready for seeds for farming. Again, the seeds are sown, but earth is made readyby the Bull.

Finally - the lingam , to me, is the matter part of a deepak jyoti. Mata Shaktican be the ghee/oil that will nourish the jyoti, but unless the cotton lump takes the form of linga, or a conical upright form, the creation of heat and light to nourish, nurture, and guide humans cannot be created. We stare at it, create t

he essence of the universe everyday, in our puja, yet we do not grasp the secrets it is showing us. Every linga of Shiv Ji tells us, how matter and energy havecombined, to create light - knowledge - which should help us free ourselves fromthis Maya and provide heat - which is nurturing and nourishing us.

om namah shivaya!om aem hrim kleem chamundayae vicchaye!
