to Support Students with ASD

Clarify routines, schedules and

transitions. Provide informationabout what is happening, what is

new and what is changing.

Simplify the sensory environment.

Consider environmental scents,

noise, lighting and traffic.

Use clear and concise language.

Avoid sarcasm and metaphors.

Make sure work is at the

appropriate academic level.

Divide work periods into smaller 

time blocks. Build in scheduled

 breaks.

Use visual supports (e.g., signs,

lists, gestures, charts and schedules).

Use a reinforcement/reward system.

Try to incorporate the student’s area

of interest.

Teach the student what to do if he

or she becomes upset or anxious.

Provide a quiet/safe area if the student

 becomes too overwhelmed by the

environment.

Build regular body breaks into the

student’s day (e.g., walks and deliveries).

Create opportunities for the student to becomeinvolved in the social

world around him or her.

Explicitly teach social skills.

Establish close communication

 between the home and school.

Form a partnership with the parents.
