SUSS – PIAGET Impact Start-Up Challenge 2018 (17-22 September 2018) Written by: Caitlyn A. Prabowo This year, NationalHigh Jakarta School (NHJS) partnered with the Singapore University of Social Sciences to organize the SUSS-NHJS Startup Challenge. This startup challenge was held at the NHJS campus, where 5 different institutions involved; in addition to NHJS and SUSS, the Singapore National Academy (SNA), I3L and Pancasila University were also invited to participate in the program. The program took place over 6 days during NHJS Interdisciplinary Week. The program started off on Monday, 17 September, after NHJS annual Sports Day. The program began with an ice breaking session in which students from all 5 institutions were able to get to know one another and practice networking. After this, Mr. William Yiu gave a short talk, sharing his business experience and entrepreneurial skills. The second day of the program began with a workshop by Ms. Ellen Goel (SUSS Specialist), who shared with the participants her insights on ideation and discovering your passion. Then, all 51 participants were given the opportunity to visit the office of Plug and Play, a local startup accelerator. There, we were able to learn about Plug and Play’s role as a startup accelerator, and hear from one of their “graduated” startups, which provides student loans to Indonesian students. Back at NHJS, a pitching session was conducted, where some students were given the chance to present an entrepreneurial idea, to a group of judges including Mr. Eric Hormein of Kejora Ventures. To narrow down the number of ideas presented, a voting session was conducted. Then, out of top 12 voted ideas, 12 teams of 4-5 members each were formed. Over the course of the next 3 days, the teams were given the chance to attend several workshops, encompassing the Lean Startup Concept, market validation, and the Lean Canvas. We visited Impact Hub, an incubator for startups with social impact, where we learned about local social enterprises, such as Topiku and Project Semesta. Each group designed a questionnaire for potential customers, in order to conduct the market validation for their product. Each group, accompanied by a chaperone, visited different locations, surveying potential customers in order to validate the demand for their product. The last 2 days were devoted to the preparation and delivery of the final pitch, to be delivered on the closing ceremony of the bootcamp. Parents, friends, teachers and media were invited to the closing ceremony of the program, where each team presented their pitch. Each team was evaluated by a panel of judges, including Wesley Yiu, Andreas Surya, Eric Hormein, and the presidential son, Kaesang Pangarep. After presentations by 9 finalists, 3 teams were awarded as the most well thought out and planned pitches: EcoBrick, AgroFeed and Lumba. The program closed off with a farewell session, as the participants from SNA and SUSS prepared to depart from Jakarta. Overall, the program was a great success, awarding all participants with refined entrepreneurial and business skills. We all look forward to hopefully participating in the startup challenge again next year. Day 1 Day 2

Day 5

- The winning team -

The SUSS-NH camp was a new and exciting experience for me. The first day of the camp, we did some fun icebreakers that helped us get to know at least a bit of each other and get rid of any awkwardness. The first day was really just getting to understand what the program was going to be like and adjusting to the way they teach. We got to know the teachers, understand what it’s like to be an entrepreneur running a startup and heard from guest speakers. The second day was a lot different from the first. We went on a field trip to Plug and Play, a startup accelerator. There we understood what they wanted from a startup and got to ask important questions we had for them. Once we went back, we would have thought of our own ideas to pitch. The process of voting for our ideas was fun and challenging. Everyone had great and unique ideas. The pitching was quick, to the point and put us out of our comfort zones. After that, we got to pick our own teams. Starting from the third day, we got to work together with our teams. Meeting and getting to know them was a great experience. That third day we learned a lot of new concepts and applied it together as a team. We also went on a field trip that night to a Kejora Ventures, a Venture Capitalist firm. There we heard talks from successful entrepreneurs who ran social enterprises. We got to go through their journey leading to their success. It felt like we got to learn from their mistakes. On the fourth day, we continued our work. However, what was most memorable about the day was our field trips just with our team. The purpose of the field trip was to interview potential customers. We went to Kota Tua to do that, but surprisingly, we also bonded as a team that day. We worked together really well in interviewing potential customers. We even went to a museum as a detour.

On Friday, we worked with our respective teams to finish our presentations. This was our most hardworking and tiring day. Luckily, we got to finish it and was ready for the presentation that night. We practiced really hard as a team, perfecting our lines and presentation. When we presented, we made it to the final presentation as one of the nine teams. Saturday was the last day. That day we presented to successful CEOs, Venture Capitalists and even the son of the President, Kaesang Pangarep. We were, of course, nervous as we went up to the stage, but our team trusted and believed in each other. Our end result was good. Although we did not win, I had fun and had no regrets joining this event and picking my team. We got close and got to know each other really well by the end of the event. Moreover, we learned many things we wouldn’t have learned within the four walls of our classrooms. These skills were applicable and are likely to help us in our future. (Kenneth Liyanto, JC1G)

This year’s song parody activity was amazing. My group and I worked really hard for this project, and the results were exceptional, but the journey to getting there was one of the best times of the many IDWs I’ve ever had. A breathtaking experience, filled with humor, teamwork, perseverance, conflicts, and problems. Our team had to work together, and make our own song parody together. It was a hard journey and my teammates argued a lot about who will sing, play the instruments, use the camera, edit the video, and make the lyrics. We also argued about the song parody having to be perfect instead of mediocre, but in the end, we all decided on helping each other out with being patient and persevering although we were stressed, upset about certain issues, and letting our temper slip out of control occasionally. Although we had conflicts on the way to making our song parody, it was a learning journey for us and it helped us practice the valuable skill of teamwork.

S2-S4

I have definitely learnt a lot throughout the past IDW. There were challenges such as lack of planning for our design, lack of attention to detail, finding the suitable materials for the system while keeping in mind of the cost and quality, and being ready with solutions for unforeseen problems. However, my team and I were able to overcome these complications by having the right mindset and working together. We always put in our very best effort throughout this project - whether it be sitting down to discuss the most effective solution or being precise and accurate with our measurements. This IDW allowed me to understand the importance of teamwork, connect almost all the subjects, and put my theoretical learnings into application. I welcomed the set-up given as a learning opportunity to be a more independent and resourceful individual. Overall, this past IDW has been a fruitful and beneficial learning experience.

- Aileen Bachtiar (S4G) The challenges we faced as a group was coordinating between team members and making sure that our project goes according to plan. It was difficult to not keep changing the course of the plan as we encountered new problems every time we progressed with the hydroponic system; may it be a new leak, or an item that we couldn't buy. From our experience during that week, I learnt that teamwork and progressing as a group, not just individually, is more important. This is because we need to also think about other team member's opinions, and not about ours only. Listening to others opinions is also important as it lets others give feedback or constructive criticism at our ideas, so that we can make it better or suit everybody in the team. I do believe that with this amount of freedom to do what we want to do ourselves and in our own way based on our interpretations of the instructions given, we get to experience dealing with a situation mostly without others guiding us and we get to work at our

own pace and recognise our mistakes without our teachers pointing it out. I think that this kind of set-up, the kind where we get to put matters into our own hands, let’s us show what we can do or apply from what has been taught in the classroom or based on our past experiences. Overall, I think that this year's IDW helped us learn to be more independent from our teachers and also learn from our mistakes without it being pointed out directly at us.
