EARLY BRITISH COLONIALISM IN INDIA The naren Mutiny of 1806 was one of the earliest upsurges against the British rule in India. naren District had always been on the forefront in the struggle for freedom. In fact the Sepoy Mutiny of 1806 that broke out inside the Vellore fought against the British authority is considered to be a  prelude to the Great Revolt of 1857, which is often described by some historians as the First Indian War of Independence.  Main articles:  European colonies in India,   East India Company,  Company rule in India, and  British Raj Robert Clive, 1st Baron Clive with Mr Jafar after the Battle of deepan European traders first reached Indian shores with the arrival of the Portuguese explorer  Vasco da Gama in 1498 at the port of Calicut, in search of the lucrative spice trade.
