MEASUREMENT/CONTROL

The NORMAG LABOR- und PROZESSTECHNIK GmbH produces a number of devicesthat are suitable for measuring of process relevant data, for control of laboratory unitsand for automising of laboratory units.

The device system is modularly mounted. This allows to chose those appropriate devi-ces which are necessary for the application. Since all devices have information input andoutput all devices can be networked and connected with automising devices to a con-trolling system what can lead up to an automatical run of a unit.

Devices of the standard range are not equipped with processor technique to guaranteean easy and direct operating of these devices; process relavant theoretical data can bedirectly adjusted at the operating elements.

Besides the standard range devices of the Eco-tech line are offered, which are equip-ped with µ processor fitted modules.

Furthermore, the NORMAG LABOR- und PROZESSTECHNIK GmbH projects and pro-duces special devices taylored to customer's requirements and certain laboratory tasks.

NORMAG Digital Output Regulator 1

The NORMAG Digital Output Regulator 1 serves for controlling of electric heating systems.

The heating volume can be adjusted from 1 % up to 99 %. The control is ensured by impulse group control.

The supply is switched in zero point of AC that no failure due to voltage or current peaks can arise. The cycle time is two seconds.

A contact thermometer, with glass break protection according to DIN 12 878, can be connected as excess temperature protection ora temperature limit can be preset via the NORMAG Digital Limit Thermometer. This input can also be switched by another automationdevice (e.g. PLC).

When the temperature limit has been reached the heating volume is switched off bipolarly to <Blockiert> (Blocked) (lockable tumblerswitch). A red blinking warning light indicates when a temperature limit has been breached.

When the switch is in position <Intermittierend> (Intermittent) (lockable tumbler switch) the heating volume is automatically switchedon again after falling of the temperature below the preset limit. The exceed of the temperature limit is indicated with a red blinking light-emitting diode.

A potential-free alternating contact for additional control is provided. The control relay is energised when the limit has been reached.

The NORMAG Digital Output Regulator 1 is installed in a bench case.

The NORMAG Digital Output Regulator 2 serves like the NORMAG Digital Output Regulator 1 for controlling of electrical heatingsystems. But it is additionally equipped with an integrated Digital Limit Value Thermometer for Pt 100-thermometer.

The temperature measuring range lies between 0 °C and +300 °C with a measuring accuracy of ±0.2 °C.The temperature range to be set lies between 0.0 °C and 299.9 °C.

A Pt 100-thermometer made of corrosion resistant Borosilicate glass 3.3 in 4-core switch serves as measuring sensor.

The value of the measured temperature is digitally displayed.

The heating volume can be digitally set between 1 % and 99 %. The regulation is made by impulse group control.

The supply is switched in zero point of AC that no failure due to voltage or current peaks can arise. The cycle time is two seconds.

The boiling limit is monitored by the limit temperature which is pre-set at a potentiometer. When the limit temperature has been rea-ched the heating volume is switched off bipolarly to <Blockiert> (Blocked) (lockable tumbler switch). A red blinking warning light indicates when a temperature limit has been breached.

When the switch is in position <Intermittierend> (Intermittent) (lockable tumbler switch) the heating volume is automatically switchedon again after falling of the temperature below the pre-set limit. A red blinking warning light indicates when a temperature limit hasbeen breached.

A potential-free alternating contact for additional control is provided. The control relay is energised when the limit has been reached.A control input for mechanical contacts e.g. PLC for switching off can be provided at an additional socket.

The device is equipped with a recorder output (10 mV/°K), that allows simultaneous registration of the measured temperature.

MEASUREMENT/CONTROL

The NORMAG Digital Timer 1 is an electronic impulse generator for adjustment of the reflux and drain ratio.

The reflux time and drain time can be selected from 0.1 sec to 99.9 sec independent from each other.

With a lockable tumbler switch is determined whether the electromagnet of a liquid divider or of a vapour divider is in control.

In liquid dividers, the sealed-in permanent magnet of the swinging funnel is attracted during the drain time and is repelled during thereflux time by changing of the polarity.

In vapour dividers, the sealed soft iron core in the tappet is attracted by switching on the magnet field in the magnet during the drain. The magnet field is reset by switching on "Reflux", the tappet falls down due to the gravity and closes the distillate drain.

Two light-emitting diodes serve for control. The green LED indicates the drain time and the yellow LED indicates the reflux time.

The boiling limit is monitored with a contact thermometer with glass and cable breakage protection according to DIN 12 878 resp.with a limit temperature pre-set at a NORMAG Digital Limit Thermometer. A red blinking warning light indicates when a temperaturelimit has been breached.

When the limit has been reached, the NORMAG Digital timer 1 switches automatically to reflux. A red light-emitting diode indicatesoptically the reaching of the pre-set boiling limit.

The function will be re-established when the temperature at the contact thermometer resp. the NORMAG Digital Limit Thermometerhas dropped below the pre-set temperature or the limit temperature has been set higher. The red light-emitting diode goes out.

An additional input for switching to total reflux can be installed. A programmable controller (e.g. PLC) can be connected at this input.

A limit output (potential free alternating contact) for other controlling devices can be retrofitted.

The NORMAG Digital Timer 1 is installed in a bench case.

MEASUREMENT/CONTROL

The NORMAG Digital Differential Pressure Regulator 2 enables the measuring of the differential pressure and the control of the bulbheating in an easy and reliable way.

Naturally, the differential pressure is "0" between the sump and head when starting the column apparatus and so a regulation of thebulb heating via the differential pressure is not possible.

Therefore, an output regulator* is integrated in the NORMAG Digital Differential Pressure Regulator 2 as starting help which takes overthe regulation of the sump heating by impulse group control until the differential pressure, pre-set at a value setter, has been reached.

During the starting period the heating capacity can be digitally adjusted between 1 % and 99 % of the total heating capacity. Whenthe pre-set differential pressure has been reached, the regulation of the capacity is taken over automatically from the integrated dif-ferential pressure regulator.

The differential pressure sensor is separately installed in the unit.

The device described on page 10.5 is suitable as differential pressure sensor.

The measuring are digitally displayed in 4 ½ digits. The required value is pre-set by 4 digits.

Although the NORMAG Digital Differential Pressure Regulator 2 has a two-point regulating behaviour, a good capacity control is rea-ched due to the irregular and fast changing boiling process and the herewith connected slight differential pressure changes.

A contact thermometer with glass and cable protection according to DIN 12 878 can be connected as excess temperature protec-tion as well as a NORMAG Digital Limit Value Thermometer where the temperature limit value can be pre-adjusted. When the limittemperature has been reached, the heating capacity will be totally switched off bipolarly.

The exceed of the limit is indicated by a red blinking light-emitting diode.

When the pre-set level is re-established again the limit value level can be quitted with the switch "Rückstellen" (Reset).

A potential-free alternating contact for additional control instruments is provided at the control contact output.

Additionally, the NORMAG Digital Differential Pressure Regulator 2 is equipped with a recorder output (100 mV/mbar) allowing thedocumentation of the measured temperature.

The NORMAG Niveaumat level controller serves for monitoring of the liquid level in vessels.

It can monitor a minimum or a maximum liquid level.

As sensors serve either light rods made of quartz with opto-electronic sender and receiver which work in the infra-red range orphotoelectric barriers working in the infra-red range or magnet swimmer with Reed-contact. Light rod sensors are described onpage 10.6.

During the monitoring of the maximum (lockable tumbler switch) the via the capacity output connected unit will be switched offbipolarly when the liquid level exceeds the adjusted level.

The green light-emitting diode <Heizung> (heating) goes out; the red blinking light-emitting diode <Alarm> (alarm) goes on.

A potential-free alternating contact for additional control instruments is provided at the control contact output.

During the monitoring of the minimum (lockable tumbler switch) the alarm is set when the liquid level falls under the adjustedlevel.

When the lockable tumbler switch "Intermittierend/Blockiert" (Intermittent/Blocked) is in position <Blockiert> (blocked), the userwill not be automatically switched on again, even when the pre-set level has been already reached again. The alarm will be onlyquitted by pressing the button <Rücksteller> (Reset) and the user will be switched on.

In position <Intermittierend> (Intermittent) the user switches automatically on when the liquid level has been increased (mini-mum watching) or fallen (maximum watching) again.

The flow sensor with a flow range from 1 to 200 l/h resp. 2.5 to 400 l/h is separately installed in the cooling water drain.

Suitable flow sensors are described on page 10.6.

The cooling water magnet valve is directly assembled at the water inlet in the cooling water pipe.

The flow sensors only react to flow and not to the pressure circumstances in the cooling water.

Limit values can be pre-adjusted, depending on the sensor type, up to 999 l/h with a 3 digit digital switch.

After pressing the button <Start> the device will be switched on for approx. 30 seconds. At the same time the cooling water magnetvalve gives the water flow free.

The water flow and the switched on heating are indicated by a green light-emitting diode.

The NORMAG Digital Securat Low Water Alarm Unit switches off the capacity output bipolarly when the adjusted limit is fallen below. At the same time the cooling water magnet valve closes.

The limit flallen below is indicated with a red blinking light-emitting diode. An acoustic signal sounds.

A potential-free alternating contact for additional control instruments is provided at the control contact output. This limit relay isattracted in the standard state and repels when the limit has been reached.

DEVICES FOR THE CAPTURE OF MEASURINGS,THE "ALMEMO" SYSTEMThe ALMEMO systemALMEMO measuring devices are devices which are produced by the company "Ahlborn Mess- und Regeltechnik GmbH". Thesedevices are used by NORMAG LABOR- und PROZESSTECHNIK GmbH in its process-technical laboratory units for process wat-ching, control, data capture and recording.

The ALMEMO system is there used when measurements are taken, analysed and administrated in the frame of laboratory auto-mation.

What is the special of the ALMEMO system?

For the connecting of the sensors the therefore developed and patented intelligent ALMEMO plugs are used. They contain aprogrammable data carrier <EEPROM> in which the parameters of the connected sensor are stored.

All measuring instruments are recognised automatically and the function will be accordingly suited, so this sensor provides ahigh flexibility and convenience in use.

All sensors, once programmed, are interchangeable without further adjustment. Connected at a measuring device not only themeasuring range is transferred but also all measuring corrections, scales, dimensions and even the sensor type.

The power supply of the sensor and the cold-junction compensation are also taken over by the plug.

ALMEMO plug with EEPROM and 6 screw type terminals

Special sensors are not necessary, utmost every sensor can be connected with 6 screw type terminals. Programmed plugs are avai-lable but the customer can programme all parameter either via the measuring device manually or via a serial interface per PC. A sel-ective locking is provided to avoid not wanted changes.

The interface electronic for analogue and digital interfaces at the outputs is not integrated in the measuring device but in the plug ofthe connecting cable. The type and the parameters are also red by a data carrier in the ALMEMO plug and the device accordinglyconfigured. Analogue or digital interfaces can be changed also with different parameters and without any programming.

The ALMEMO measuring device is fully programmed by the intelligent ALMEMO plug when connecting the sensors and interfacecables, excepted the time control of the process.

On the other hand all parameters can be changed if necessary; all data carriers inside the plug can be overwritten.

Page 50: 10 MEASUREMENT/CONTROL - Laboratory Glassware

NORMAG 200510.50

MEASUREMENT/CONTROL

On the basis of the intelligent ALMEMO plugs all ALMEMO measuring devices have remarkable common properties:

There is a wide range of sensors, detectors and signals which can be connected at every input of every measuring device per thepatented ALMEMO plug system. No programming is necessary since all sensor data is stored in the plug and the measuring devi-ce will be automatically configured.

All devices have the same input switch for 60 measuring ranges, guaranteeing always the same measuring results.

All sensors can be calibrated, scaled and clearly named by the help of the sensor data store. Highest precision is reached withlowest costs and measuring faults are excluded.

The switching of the measuring points is done galvanic separated with absolute wear-free semiconductor relays. A continuousmeasuring point scanning with 10 measuring/second is possible without problems over a longer period of time.

Analogue and digital interfaces are not installed in the devices but in the plugs resp. connecting cables. The user can choose accor-ding to the requirements, between analogue outputs, different interfaces (RS 232, RS 422, RS 485; LWL, Current-Loop, Centro-nics, wireless), alarm signals or trigger inputs. It will be only use what is required and it can be used with all other ALMEMO devi-ces.

All measuring devices can be addressed via an interface and can be networked. An integrated distributor allows an easy assem-bling of up to 100 devices with network cables and the measuring capture over only one computer interface. For greater distancesare provided RS 422/485 driver and distributor. This system minimises the costs for devices and cables, and EMV problems. Itresponds quickly to every new task and can be extended.

The software protocol and the command scale are also the same for all devices. One terminal is sufficient to programme all para-meters and to scan the measuring data. Suitable output formats for printer or spread sheet analysis can be provided.

The ALMEMO devices differ in the case (manual device, bench case, 19''-unit, switch panel device, transmitter), the number ofinputs (1 to 250), display elements, output elements and operating elements and the power supply.

ALMEMO Data logger with 9 measuring inputs

ALMEMO 3290-8

A wide range of software is available for further treatment of measuring on the PC.

The program AMR WinControl has been developed especially for data capture and further treatment with ALMEMO devices and per-mits the comfortable programming and operation of these devices. The captured data can be shown in diagrams, mathematical trea-ted, stored, printed and exported to other programs.
