Welcome to 2012! It is my great pleasure to welcome everyone back to the new school year and to extend a special welcome to those students and their families who are new to Trinity in 2012! I am conscious that many of these families have recently arrived in the Albury-Wodonga area and I trust that they have survived the challenges of relocating as calmly and successfully as possible!

It is a great privilege that these families have chosen Trinity as the school for their child(ren) and we look forward to working closely with all students and in partnership with parents in the years to come! I also welcome back to the College: • Mrs Trudy O’Connor (teaching Year 1 at Albury) and • Mrs Shara Knobel (teaching Year 1 at Albury).

During the summer holidays a few staff were married and I take this opportunity on behalf of the College to wish Miss Peters, Mr Hillary and Mr Stevens and their respective spouses every best wish and every blessing as they commence their married lives together!

Induction Service for College Chaplain On Wednesday of this week the Bishop of Wangaratta, the Most Reverend John Parkes, conducted a special induction service in the Multi Purpose Hall for the College’s new Chaplain, Rev’d Dr Lee Weissel. It was a special celebration of Rev Lee’s arrival at Trinity and an important acknowledgement of the valuable role played by the Chaplain at a school like Trinity!

At Wednesday’s service we were honoured to have present a number of the clergy from the three local Anglican parishes. In 2011, the College relied on the generous support of Fr Peter McKeague and Fr Alan Kelb from the Anglican Parish of Northern Albury, Fr Glyn Rees from St John’s in Wodonga and Fr Peter McLeod-Miller from St Matthew’s during Terms 2, 3 and 4 in terms of conducting the important fortnightly Chapel services for all students at the College. Once again, I place on record my sincere thanks for this support and I look forward to continuing to work with the three local parishes in the years ahead!

I would ask the College community to remember Rev Lee in their thoughts and prayers as he commences his role as Chaplain at Trinity. He is already proving to be an asset to the College and I know that he will work well with our students, staff and parents in his role.

Finally, I take this opportunity to thank the Bishop for finding time in his busy schedule to come up to the College to conduct this important service!

HSC Achievements & Success As many of you would be aware, the HSC results from the Year 12 class of 2011 were very strong and capped off a terrific academic year for the College on the back of pleasing NAPLAN results, well above the respective averages. In terms of the HSC results, the College is very proud of all of our Year 12 students and their respective individual results. Well done to all students, teachers and parents involved in last year’s HSC programme!

Uniform Reminders At this week’s Assemblies to commence the new school year, I took time to remind students of the College’s expectations in terms of uniform and appearance. These reminders included:

• All students must wear the official College hat to and from school and whenever they are outside at this time of the year

• All students are encouraged to apply sunscreen before they leave home to come to school and if possible to reapply during the course of the day

• All students are encouraged to drink plenty of water each day during this hot weather

• All students should ensure that they have a College bag or backpack and that they bring this to school each day

• All students should ensure that their personal grooming and presentation meets the College standards and guidelines (which are available via Student diaries). In particular, students should ensure that they have their hair cut and styled in an appropriate manner; that female students wear their summer tunic at an appropriate length (approximately 10cm above the knee); that no make-up is worn to school by any students; and that all students should ensure that they follow the simple guidelines in relation to the wearing of jewellery (again, these are available in the Student diaries).

It was terrific to see the vast majority of students return to the College wearing the uniform correctly and well! Pastoral Care Tutors in the Senior School and Classroom Teachers in the Junior School will be following up with individual students any uniform or presentation issues in this early part of the term. I hope that all parents will support the College’s uniform guidelines and ensure that their sons and daughters are wearing the Trinity uniform properly!

2012 Trinity Wall Calendar All families should have received a copy of the College’s wall calendar for the 2012 school year. This document should assist students and families as they plan ahead and keep up to date with the major events which will occur at the College this year. Once again, a lot of time and effort has gone into the production of the calendar and I hope that the College community finds it useful!

I wish to acknowledge the corporate sponsors which made the calendar possible and would encourage Trinity families to remember these businesses when they are out and about and in the market for particular services or goods. The sponsors of the 2012 calendar are:

• Mastercut Meats – the butchers at Thurgoona Plaza

• Kotzur Silos - from Walla Walla • Zauner Constructions - of Albury-

Wodonga • Smiths Office Solutions, Lavington • ADE – Arien Delcour Electrical,

Wodonga • Davis Sanders Homes, Albury • Freedom Furniture, Albury • Walpole Surveying, Albury • Macfab Engineering, Albury • Fountain Court Motor Inn, Albury • Nando’s Restaurant, Lavington • Springdale Heights Tavern

Through the generous support of these sponsors we have been able to produce and supply the 2012 calendar to Trinity families. On behalf of the College community, I thank these businesses for their generous support!

Important Verification Documents Last week the College sent home with the calendars an important document outlining a number of helpful details we currently have on record for each student and his/her family. I understand that going through this verification exercise is quite time consuming for all involved but if completed correctly, will provide the College with correct and current details which should allow us to respond swiftly and without any dramas in the case of an emergency! It is really important that all parents and guardians look at this document carefully and indicate any changes to this information or indicate that the information is correct as shown and return these forms to the office of either campus by Friday, 16 February.

Administration Building (Albury) - update This project has started to gain momentum in recent days and certainly the new building is literally taking shape! Our builders, Joss Constructions, are on schedule and are confident that we will be moving into the new building during the latter part of the Easter vacation period.

I take this opportunity to ask all members of the College community to take great care and remain as patient as possible as they use the car park areas at any time during the construction period. The safety of all students, parents, staff and visitors to the College is paramount and when the car park is congested at the beginning and end of the day, it is important for all to be patient and to exercise great care.

It is also important for all to know that no-one, other than the builders and their contractors, should enter the construction site at any time or for any reason! All students have been reminded of this important safety requirement at recent assemblies and again, I would ask parents to ensure that their child(ren) do not attempt to enter the site for any reason!

Once again, welcome back to all students, parents and staff! I hope that 2012 will be another successful year for everyone involved in the life and operations of the College!

It is amazing that after only two weeks we have a number of items in lost property and much of it is unnamed. Can I please remind all students and parents to ensure that all clothing, lunch boxes, water bottles, books and stationery are labelled correctly.

It is a requirement that students present to school in the correct uniform and I ask for parental assistance to ensure that students attend school appropriately each day. This includes meeting the requirements of the College with hair, jewellery, shoes and a hat. For all students it is also important that the correct footwear is worn, this of course is black lace up polishable shoes that is outlined in all documentation referring to uniform and has always been the requirement of Trinity students. For the female students it is also important that the length of their dresses is appropriate (no more than 10cm above the knee).

All students in Years 10 and 11 have been given their Assessment Booklets outlining the rules, regulations and procedures associated with assessment. The assessment schedule for years 10-12 has also been distributed. If parents have

any questions relating to assessment in these year groups please contact the Director of Studies, Ms Kym Armstrong.

On Friday, 27 January all academic staff participated in professional development dealing with Habits of Mind. The Habits of Mind is a critical thinking approach that aims to assist students from Kinder/Prep to Year 12 adjust their behaviours when confronted with problems and challenges they do not know the answer to. The focus of this approach is the development within the person of the 16 habits.

The staff are enthusiastic and encouraged with the way we already approach elements of these habits, but with some additional professional development and much collegial discussion we will be able to develop and integrate these habits at appropriate year levels and times throughout the year even more. We are confident that with an increased awareness of these habits our students will not only learn more but become better learners!

If you would like to read more about the 16 Habits of Mind we have loaded a summary of the habits on our website under the curriculum link.

Parent/Teacher Interviews This term all parents of students in Prep/Kindergarten to Year 10 have the opportunity to attend Parent/Teacher interviews. We hope that by offering more than one date for these important interviews that parents will be able to select an evening that fits in with their other family commitments.

The Junior School parents have two nights available to make bookings with their child’s class teacher; Monday, 5 March and Tuesday, 6 March. For parents of Years 7 – 10 there are three dates available; Tuesday, 13 March, Thursday, 15 March and Wednesday, 21 March. Of course all these and other important dates are included in the wall calendar that has been distributed to students and on the College website.

The booking codes and website address required to make bookings for these interviews will be included in next week’s newsletter.

NSW School-Based Vaccination Programme Each year NSW Health offers the vaccines recommended by the National Health and Medical Research Council (NHMRC) for adolescents as part of the school-based vaccination programme.

In 2012 the following vaccines will be offered: • Hepatitis B vaccine for all Year 7 students who have not received 3 doses

• Varicella (chicken pox) vaccine for all Year 7 students who have not previously received varicella vaccine or had chicken pox disease

• Human Papillomaviorus (HPV) vaccine will be offered to Year 7 girls only as a 3-dose course over a six-month period.

• Diphtheria, Tetanus & Pertussis (Whooping Cough) vaccine will be offered to all Year 7 and Year 10 students.

Parent Information Kits will be sent home to parents/guardians. To consent to the vaccination of their child, parents/guardians are advised to read all the information provided, complete the consent form and return it to their child’s school. Please ensure that your child eats breakfast on the day of the school vaccination clinic.

Parents/guardians who wish to withdraw their consent for any reason may do so by writing to the School Principal. The Procedure for Withdrawal of Consent is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/immunisation.

To improve vaccination completion, students will be opportunistically offered any missed doses throughout the year.

Please note that for HPV vaccine only, parents/guardians must record their Medicare Number (all 10 digits and the 11th number beside the child’s name) on the consent form, as this is required to record the student’s information on the National HPV Vaccination Register and link to the National or State Cervical Screening Programme.

A record of vaccination will be provided to each student vaccinated at the clinic. Parents/guardians should ensure that this record is kept for future reference and should not assume that their child has been vaccinated if they do not receive this Record of Vaccination.

Peer Support Over the next 8 weeks, all our Yr 7 students will be involved with Peer Support. Each week groups of 8 -10 students will meet with two Yr 10 Peer leaders and work through a range of activities that focus on resilience. It is hoped that through working on these activities in small groups, each student will enhance

Page 9: 10 February 2012 - Amazon S3 · schedule to come up to the College to conduct this important service! HSC Achievements & Success . As many of you would be aware, the HSC results from

Page 9

their resilience and continue to develop the skills needed to bounce back when things don't work out the way they planned.

Empathy During Peer Support, students will learn the value and importance of showing empathy for self and others when they are going through difficult times. They will focus specifically on the need to consider the feelings of others and appreciate differing points of view. The students will begin to understand how developing empathy for self and others can help us cope with challenging situations and assist others to manage when they are also going through difficult times.

Optimism During Peer Support, students will be encouraged to consider the meaning of adopting an optimistic attitude. They will learn that an attitude is how we think, feel and respond to circumstances and that our attitudes greatly influence how we cope with and manage challenging situations. Students will begin to understand that having an optimistic attitude is about persevering to find a solution to a problem, realising a situation probably won't last forever, and that being optimistic is a key factor in being able to bounce back and become more resilient.

Positive Self Talk Positive self talk is a key skill for every student to develop if they are going to cope successfully with, and manage situations they find challenging. A focus is to be aware of the thoughts that run through their minds, and recognise how these have a significant influence over how they feel and respond to situations. Being alert to negative thought patterns and making a conscious effort to change them takes time and practice.

Perseverance During Peer Support, students will participate in a range of activities that will require perseverance to complete successfully. These activities are intended to highlight to students the importance of persevering when circumstances are difficult. Students will be encouraged to realise that to achieve success often requires perseverance. Being prepared to push on when things are challenging is a key feature of becoming a more resilient individual.

Resilience During Peer Support, students will continue to develop their understanding of resilience, and appreciate that being resilient is having the ability to bounce back when things don't work out the way we planned. They will be encouraged to

Page 10: 10 February 2012 - Amazon S3 · schedule to come up to the College to conduct this important service! HSC Achievements & Success . As many of you would be aware, the HSC results from

Page 10

Newsletter Week 2, Term 1, Week Ending 10 February 2012

consider their response to situations they find uncomfortable and to contrast positive and negative ways of reacting. Students will be made aware that while we can't always control what happens to us, we can control our attitude and response to these situations. Students will be challenged to consider a range of problems they may face, and to develop strategies they could use to respond in a positive and resilient way.

Coping During Peer Support, students will consider a range of coping strategies they could use to enable them to persevere in a situation and become more resilient. They will be encouraged to recognise the importance of asking for help if they find themselves in a situation they find difficult to manage, and to work out who they can turn to and include in their personal support network.

Celebrating Success One key aspect of the resilience module is the importance placed upon developing a range of skills to assist students to bounce back when things don't work out the way they planned. A vital feature of this is encouraging students to reflect upon and acknowledge their personal strengths. This allows students to draw upon the confidence these strengths give them to deal with situations they feel less skilled to manage. Encouraging students to remember there are many things they are capable of is a significant coping strategy to help them move through new challenges.

Junior School News - Albury

Welcome back! I trust that you have had the opportunity to spend some quality time together as a family over the holiday period and that your son/daughter is looking forward to a new year of discovery and learning. I warmly welcome all new families to the Junior School.

I look forward to meeting you at many of the co-curricular activities and events that take place over the course of the year. Your children greatly appreciate

your family’s involvement/attendance. One of the upcoming events is ‘Grandparents and Special Visitors Day’ so do refer to future Newsletters for details.

Starting the new school year Nothing is quite as thrilling — or challenging — as the beginning of a new school year for families. Parents are set the task of preparing the family for school by assisting their child to be organised, establishing and reinforcing solid routines and supporting children so they can do their best.

Arriving on time is one of the keys to getting a good start for the school day. Trying to get out of the door on time can make for a stressful time. Clever parents know that a structured routine that works is the key to starting the day happy, prepared and ready to leave the house on time and with a smile. Here are two tips that will assist mums and dads with that all-important morning routine. • Encouraging your son/daughter to learn to pack their own school bag the

night before. Run through the requirements for the next day with him/her and ensure all that is required is laid out or packed. This will save valuable minutes each morning and assist your child to develop the habit of preparing in advance.

• Being ready to learn requires a good breakfast. Nutritionists recommend kids eat three of the five food groups for breakfast for optimum energy, mood and performance - meaning that only one piece of toast and Vegemite won't really cut it. Cereal, fruit and toast is an ideal way to start the day. Teach your child to prepare a healthy breakfast so that in time he/she can routinely prepare their own breakfast. Beginning the day with a good breakfast always sets children up to start the day well.

I look forward to sharing other tips with you in future Newsletters.

Kinder Please be aware that the Kinders are being dismissed at 3:10 pm as of this week. However, to make the transition easier for all concerned, both classes will be ready for collection from 3:00pm. The normal dismissal time of 3:10 pm will start from Week 3.

Parent Helpers This is a message for all volunteer helpers who were trained in 2011. Your assistance at the College is very much appreciated. Should you wish to continue to assist at our

school you are required to complete the “Working with Children” Form. Please collect the form from Mrs McMillan in the Office. This form is required to be completed annually.

Parents who would like to assist in the many activities run by the College are required to complete the Helper Training every 2 years.

Finally, congratulations must go to the Junior School boys who were recently selected to play for District Representative Soccer teams. Well done to: (Pictured L – R below) Sam Cavanough, Patrick O’Connor, Mitchell Scott, Jarryd Sundblom, Jack Anderson (development player) and Josh Corbett (development player) for being selected in the Under 11 team and to Andrew Baziotis and Caleb Styles for their selection in the Under 12 team. These quizzes are emailed to parents. The link for students to complete them will be emailed to their College Email. Students are then given an extensive report that is used to map out a career development plan in consultation with the careers Advisor and parents. If you would like to know more about the programme, please contact me at the College.

The Senior School Twilight Swim Championships (Yr 5 to 12) will be held at the Albury Swim Centre Monday, 13 February from 6.00 to 8.00 pm. Students will have to make their own way to and from the pool and we encourage all students to attend. The invitation is also extended to all families to come and offer their support. Supervision will be provided at the pool from 5:45 pm to 8:15pm. We encourage parents to pick their child/ren up as promptly as possible as the pool will close not long after our carnival. Students can wear their House colours to the Swim Championships. Students will be situated on the west side of the pool and parents can support from the Albury Football Club side of the 50m pool. BISSA Swim Championships will be held in Wagga on Friday, 9 March.

Students from Year 5 and 6 will also be allowed to compete (although their points will count towards their House’s total at the Senior School Championships, age champions will only be awarded at the Junior school carnival for these students). Students will have to nominate for the events they will compete in; nomination forms will be handed out in Pastoral Care. A

reminder to all students that in Term 4 students will participate in another compulsory swim carnival with novelty events.

Basketball Nominations for basketball teams have been made with the summer season beginning on Friday 10th of February. I appreciate the students who have notified me of their intentions for the coming season. If you haven’t already done so, please let me know ASAP. All students who will not be playing on this season please return your basketball singlet. Annual registration is due for the majority of our members; please pay at the front office of the school with all cheques payable to Trinity College. Registration is Un 10 – 12, $75 and Un14 to Un 18, $80 and is paid annually and covers two consecutive seasons. The Border Bandits basketball club will again provide a weekly clinic to train our club later in the term.

With the growth of our basketball club we are in need of additional coaches. If you are interested in coaching your child's side can you please also let me know?

Netball Netball team nominations have also been made. Thank you to all parents who let us know last year if their daughter/s would be interested in playing or will be playing again this season. The amount of netball sides we nominated has grown also and unfortunately at this stage all sides are nearly full. Parents need to be aware that sides have a maximum number of competitors; however, I still encourage you to let me know if your child is interested in playing as they can possibly train with the appropriate side and join a side if a position becomes available.

Our philosophy on sport at Trinity is to provide students with sporting opportunities through participation and enjoyment. Therefore, your child might not be in their preferred side as all is done to have teams as even as possible. Please be mindful of this when making requests.

There have been some fantastic achievements of Trinity students over the holidays. Please email me any worthy sporting successes from throughout the holidays to share with the broader Trinity community. Likewise, if you have a registration or trial day within your club or sport please also feel free to email relevant information me and I will endeavour to advertise it through our newsletter. Please be aware though that this can't always be done.

At the beginning of each term I will advertise nominations being called for CIS sports. If your child competes at a representative level and would be interested in nominating they have to do so by the advertised date. Please be aware that no late nominations are accepted and applications have to be endorsed by the school. It is the parents’ responsibility to organise travel and accommodation if required; most trials are in Sydney. A CIS calendar and sport information is available on the CIS website http://www.aisnsw.edu.au/.

Individual Music Lessons – Taught at the College during School hours – If you choose, your child may consider having music lessons at the College. This is an arrangement between you and the music teacher with the College organizing notification of lesson times in the Daily Bulletin and providing the facility for the lessons to take place. If you are unsure about what is available, please ring Jenny in the Front Office on 6049 3400. Please note: if your child does elect to attend music lessons during school hours that it is your responsibility to notify the music teacher of any absences, either caused by illness or by absence for school excursions or sport. Lunch and recess time slots are mostly allocated to senior students.

Illara Concert All elective music students (Yr 9-12) attended an exciting music workshop today in the MPH. Stephen O'Connell, director of the Murray Conservatorium and one of Australia's leading saxophonists, performed with his Jazz Band consisting of 4 members plus one Audi visual; Saxophone, keyboard, drums, bass (Electric or double bass). The programme consisted of a performance of original Australian jazz accompanied by a composer talk and explanation of the works. The performance also features projected visual images of the sacred Aboriginal site, "Illara Waterhole" where the works were composed.

The 25th Riverina Summer School for Strings Gideon Dionysius, (pictured left) Yr 7 along with 120 other keen string players, attended Charles Sturt University Wagga for a week of intensive string instruction in January. The musical level was very high this year, which marks 25 years of the summer school. Gideon thoroughly enjoyed his time at the Summer school where he met 7 other Double Bass players! Currently Gideon is Trinity’s only Double Bassist. He is a talented and dedicated music student playing in Trinity’s String Orchestra, Chamber Group, Blow Your Own Horn and Jazz Band.
