Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty Research has shed light on the importance of a new major

cause of skin aging: external or added aging linked to the environment and lifestyle.

MORE THAN 80% OF THE CAUSES OF SKIN AGING ARE LINKED TO ENVIRONMENT AND LIFESTYLE.

Pollution, UV rays, fatigue, stress, smoking…These external factors directly impact

the functioning of metabolisms associated with youthfulness of the skin. They accelerate its natural

and biological aging.

Environmental aggressions; major factor of skin aging:

Yves Rocher innovates with a new botanical active ingredient from the plant world, Moringa Peptides, tremendous shielding agents against environmental

aggressions, which age skin.

Our skin’s primary purpose is to protect us against environmental aggressions, which is why it is also called a cutaneous barrier.Foreseen to interact with “pure” air, it unfortunately faces air, which contains a variety of more or less complex molecules. They are found in the form of:- solid particles: they represent asphyxiating aggressions for skin; - in molecular gas form: they cause more in-depth oxidizing aggressions.

1 cm3 of mountain air contains 4,000 particles, yet we fi nd more than 3,000,000 (dust, particles, fi bers, aerosols and smoke…) in the city. Although very little, these solid particles hardly penetrate skin, thanks to its protective barrier function. On the other hand, by distributing themselves on the surface of the epidermis, they can slow down or even block the phenomenon of desquamation (sloughing of dead skin cells). Therefore, cellular renewal is halted and the skin’s surface becomes irregular. In blocking the natural process of desquamation, asphyxiating aggressions alter the uniformity of skin color, texture and complexion: this is the aging linked to asphyxiating aggressions.

Numerous, invisible and many, oxidizing attacks are provoked by heavy metals (Cadmium, Mercury, Arsenic, Copper…), volatile organic compounds (Methane, Ozone) and also, carbon monoxide and UV rays. The mechanism of oxidation is a chemical reaction that will generate the creation of new, unusable, changeable or even dangerous molecules within the cell. Repetitive oxidizing aggression will cause a loss of information, material and functionality of different cellular structures (slowing down of cellular renewal…) and skin tissue (loss of collagen…); hence the premature aging of skin, due to oxidation.

The Moringa is a shrub 4 to 8 m in height; it grows, for the most part, in tropical and sub-tropical countries in Asia, Africa and America. Its ease of propagation and adaptation to extreme environmental conditions have earned it a “never die” nickname. But it is also, and most importantly, known as the “miracle tree” because all of its parts are used for its nutritional and/or medicinal properties. Its fruits nourish, its leaves heal. In Africa, its seeds are used to clarify river water that is fi lled with particles, making the water clear for consumption.

Peptides, the key to the Moringa seeds effectiveness, are located at its core. These small proteins – elements essential to the life of cells – are holders of a positive charge, which attracts impurities present in cloudy (negatively charged) water and neutralizes them.

Beyond this remarkable activity of clarifi cation, the researchers of Yves Rocher Laboratories have demonstrated the protective effectiveness of Moringa peptides in the face of environmental aggressions, which accelerate skin aging.

In order to demonstrate all the effectiveness of Moringa peptides in the face of environmental aggression, Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty Research set up numerous innovative tests.

1) Moringa peptides protect skin from polluting particles. In exposing skin cells to polluting particles emitted by automobiles, Yves Rocher researchers showed that Moringa peptides effectively protected cells and improved their viability. Combined with a botanical protector extract from Aphloia (Yves Rocher patent) it protects the cells +28% and repairs cellular damage +32%. (In vitro test)

2) Moringa peptides protect skin from free radical attacks.Skin’s cells naturally introduce systems of protection such as antioxidant enzymes. But, with age and the accumulation of aggressions, most notably atmospheric pollutants, these systems can be faulty and lead to cell death, then to premature skin aging. The anti-free radical effectiveness of Moringa peptides was compared with that of the market’s control marker active ingredient (rutine). They display an anti-free radical activity four times more signifi cant. (In vitro test)

3) Moringa peptides protect skin from polluting particles. The polluting particles (dust, carbon) present in the atmosphere adhere to the skin and asphyxiate it. Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty Research shows that a lotion containing Moringa peptides allows for better skin protection by limiting the adhesion of carbon to the surface of skin. (Non-invasive in-vivo test)

4) 24h Antioxidant Shield Serum: active shield against skin oxidation.Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty Research wanted to demonstrate the high antioxidant performance of the line’s star anti-aggression serum. To do this, researchers showed that squalene, naturally present in signifi cant quantities in sebum, is the fi rst target of oxidative stress. Atmospheric aggressions (UV rays, smoking, ozone) lead to the transformation of squalene to squalene peroxides. The 24H Antioxidant Shield Serum clearly demonstrated its effectiveness in actively protecting skin and effectively reducing the production of squalene peroxide. They showed:- an instant antioxidant action of 82% (signifi cant reduction in the production of squalene peroxide in 82% of test cases). - up to +36% protection against oxidation after 2 months treatment (best observation. Signifi cant reduction of the concentration of squalene peroxide after 2 months treatment).

Skin is the first line of defense against visible and invisible

environmental aggression. These daily oxidizing and asphyxiating assaults

result in accelerated skin aging.

Yves Rocher Botanical Beauty Research has selected Moringa peptides

to combat environmental aggressions.

Derived from Moringa seeds – used to clarify water filled with dust and particles

– the peptides have shown, in vivo and/or in vitro, their anti-free radical,

antioxidant, protective and reparative effectiveness in the face of environmental

aggressions: + 28% protection, + 32% repair!

This active ingredient is at the source of the effectiveness

of Yves Rocher’s new skin care line.
