Blue Rabies?
In honor of Nurse Amanda Yarkosky’s last day, Blakesburg 6th graders devel-oped a strange case of blue rabies so they could have a visit with her. Nurse Amanda is in the middle, sur-rounded by blue mouths . . . hmmm, per-haps a candy treat was what it took to call her to their attention! Amanda has served as the school nurse for ten years, and will be greatly missed. She began a new position at Pella Clinic on January 26. The school district thanks her for her service and wishes her all the best!!!

Taking Care of Our Own - Can You Help? FCCLA is creating a new chapter service at the high school. We are a low-income school district and not all students in our district have enough food to eat or necessities that are so often taken for granted. We are creating a room at the high school in the office for students - here students can discretely receive these items from a school staff member. Community members, who would like to contribute to our service project, may drop snack items or hygiene products off at the high school, or contact Allie Adams (Student Project Leader) or Lisa Strausser (FCCLA Advisor) at the high school. It is our wish that as time goes on, we can expand on our idea to include shoes, dress clothes, and everyday clothes for the high school and eventually expand to the elementary buildings. We thank the community for any support that they are wanting to give us, as we grow as leaders and make a better environment for the EBF district.

Theatre Group Prepares for Annual Fremont Lions’ Play
FREMONT – Members of the Fremont Lions Club theatre group are busy with rehearsals for their an-nual play. The cast of “Virgil Wins The Lottery” will pre-sent the show Feb. 12, 13 and 14 at Fremont School.
The play is another hillbilly story of Virgil (Shannon Bethune), a simple country boy, who buys a lottery ticket. Everyone dreams of striking it rich by win-ning the lottery except Virgil’s wife, Margaret (Jeanene Calhoun). Margaret thinks it’s a waste of money until Virgil wins the $10,000 Lickskillit lottery.
As soon as Margaret and Virgil get the news, Virgil quits his job, they join the posh (well, posh for Lickskillit) social club and overnight start living in high cotton. And then they get more news: They didn’t actually win the $10,000 lottery. Shamefully exposed, Margaret and Virgil start eatin’ crow and learn that life is good, with or without the winnings, and then they get the big-gest surprise of all.
The cast is filled with a number of returning ac-tors including Sandy Eckley, Janice West, Bill Ward, Sharon Van Ringelestein, Mark Hansen, Paul Horn and Christina Kime. Also Dollie Horn, Sherri Baxter, Ryan Keep, and Gary Mitterer. A number of “others” may make cameos in this year’s production. Directors for the production are Scott Bethune and Mindy Archer.
Show times will be at 7 p.m. on Feb. 12-13 and at 2 p.m. on Sunday. Seating is limited, but tickets are available at the door.

Fremont Reading Night On Thursday, January 21, Fremont Elementary held their annual reading night. The commu-nity was invited to attend and join us for an evening filled with read-ing, writing, and a fun craft-
making event. When the students and their families arrived, they were greeted at the front door. There they received a ticket to place in the snowman for a drawing at the end of the evening, and were given a number so they knew where they needed to start their night. In the library, they had the opportunity to sit down with a parent or family member and read in a quiet and inviting environment. From there they journeyed to the first grade room where there was a writing activity offered - again a great opportunity for the kids to show their parents the many things that we have been learning in the classrooms. Their final stop was in the cafeteria where they were engaged in the building of a snowman; here they could get a cup of steaming hot chocolate, enjoy some snowman building music, and work with their family in creating an awesome snowman that will be displayed in the hallway for all to see. At the end of the evening we had a small drawing with some books, four pillows, and a Kindle Fire that all were donated by people who care and want to see our children reading and learning. A great big thank you to all who donated gifts and to all who helped make
this night a success. We had a great turnout for our reading night, with around 40 students along with their families present. What a great way to end the day! Thank you to all who were able to attend, and we hope that you enjoyed yourselves. ~ Photos/Info Courtesy Lindy Hammes

PProblem-Solvers! Blakesburg youth recently had a fun night of think-ing with their families at school. STEM night was a Science, Math, Engineering and Techonology Event. Students and their families used their science, engi-neering, and mathematical knowledge to participate in grade level STEM activities. Their challenges in-cluded building houses that could withstand a wind-storm, snow men, learning what would sink or float,
and balloon powered cars.

Summer Tables Completed By Chapter Reporters H. Boyer and C. Jager
Put sixteen kids out in the Ag Shop with a bunch of treated lumber and what do you get? Four fantas-tic eight-sided picnic tables constructed out of treated pine. The Soils and Crops class at Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont High School has taken on the task of constructing picnic tables from original plans once again. The class was allowed to create four-person teams, and each team would then build a table at their own pace. Getting into groups was easy. The hard part was starting from scratch and reading the plans to get the process started. FFA members Morgan Wells and Jessie Fisher realized how hard the project was going to be very early. “I think it was the very first day we were in the lab that I realized that there were a lot of pieces to this project, and we were going to have a hard time doing it,” Wells said. “Once we got started, it seemed to go a lot quick-er, until we had some trouble near the end,” said Fish-er. Students were involved in a number of skills dur-ing this process that enhances the experience of a CTE (Career Technical Education) class. Students utilized tape measures, T squares, slide saws, jig saws, cordless drills, and table saws during the activi-ty. “While students use different tools, they become more confident in their ability to create something positive, which is the end product,” said Ag Instruc-tor, Patrick Powers. Powers, who is in his 33rd year of experience, has not been using this project particu-larly long. “I implemented the eight-sided tables about six years ago. Eddyville Lumber and Hardware had a table out one summer, and I took a long look at it. I really was only worried about one aspect of the construction, otherwise I felt comfortable about having the kids make them,” Powers added. Since that time, EBF Ag classes have been cranking out the tables for sale to people in the community at cost. Freshman FFA member Alex Brittain sold the table that his group of Logan Neubert, Sonny Golden and fellow FFA member Lee Osterloh completed to his uncle. “I was really impressed with how our table turned out, and I wanted someone in my family to own it,” said Brittain. One of the remaining three tables will be sold at the Agri-Power FFA Alumni consignment auction on March 12, that will be held at the Eddyville Raceway Park.

2016 DERELICT BUILDING GRANT APPLICATIONS
DUE FEB. 26 DNR Contact: Scott Flagg, 515-725-8318 or [email protected] MOINES – Small rural commu-nities looking for assistance to help renovate or deconstruct abandoned commercial and public structures can apply for funding through the Dere-lict Building Grant Program. Applications for the next round of funding are due at 4 p.m. central time on Feb. 26. Instituted by state legislation to help rural communities with popula-tions of 5,000 or less to deconstruct or renovate abandoned commercial and public structures, the Derelict Building Grant Program emphasizes reuse and recycling of building items, helps improve street appearance and commercial development, and allevi-ates the environmental concern these buildings can pose. Financial assistance includes as-bestos removal, building deconstruc-tion and renovation, and other inspec-tions and environmental site assess-ments. Funding is awarded annually on a competitive basis. A committee from the Iowa DNR, Iowa Society of Solid Waste Operations, Iowa Recycling Association, Iowa Economic Devel-opment Authority and Keep Iowa Beautiful selects the projects for funding. More information about the grant program, application forms, and re-sources are available at www.iowadnr.gov/Environmental-Protection/Land-Quality/Waste-Management/Derelict-Building-Program.
