Having these new locations is a great advantage for both us and for the patients in the area. Both offices are receiving advanced upgrades with state-of-the-art equipment, including cameras and digital sensors — all the latest and greatest technology in the dental field. Over the last few months we’ve added two new offices, and I wanted to take this opportunity to welcome all the doctors, staff, and patients joining the Monticciolo family! Two existing offices have been brought in, and I’m very excited to have them.

From St. Petersburg, Dr. Wayne H. Kehm and his staff have joined us. In Seminole, we’re welcoming Dr. Maggie Bressler of Dental Care Group. I’m very excited to be working with these talented doctors and all their wonderful staff members.

For the patients originally with these locations, you don’t have to worry about anything. Being pregnant is an exciting and wondrous experience, but it can also have its share of challenges. You’re scrambling to get the house ready for a new baby, coming up with baby names, and observing the right habits to make sure your baby is safe and healthy when it arrives. However, while you’ve already heard about avoiding things like alcohol and smoking, you may not be aware of the role your oral health can play in the health of your baby.

Gum disease in particular has been linked to preterm and low-birthweight babies. In The Journal of the American Dental Association, researchers published results claiming that pregnant women with chronic gum disease faced four to seven times the likelihood of underweight babies and premature delivery — before gestational week 37 — compared to pregnant women with healthy gums. In those with the most severe periodontal disease, delivery happened even earlier, at 32 weeks.

While there’s a connection between gum disease and complications with pregnancy, the reverse is also true.

Becoming pregnant can lead to a condition called pregnancy gingivitis, as well as gum disease. If you already had gum disease before getting pregnant, your pregnancy can make it worse. And according to statistics from WebMD, roughly 40 percent of women will develop gingivitis sometime during their pregnancy. This is due to hormonal changes. When the level of progesterone in your body increases, you are more susceptible to bacteria that can cause these oral diseases.

Because of the greater potential for gum disease and gingivitis during pregnancy, and the possible complications your baby may face as a result, you should be very diligent about oral hygiene for the full term of your pregnancy. You may also consider

adopting an antimicrobial mouth rinse as part of your routine to specifically combat the proliferation of those bad bacteria.

Last but certainly not least, make room for regular professional dental cleanings in your schedule. Getting properly diagnosed with pregnancy gingivitis could help you avoid a premature or underweight baby.

Dentistry From The Heart September and October are our biggest months for DFTH, with over

60 events. Below is the list of upcoming events.

Back to school often means organizing backpacks, making lunches, and preparing for those inevitable fundraisers. Whether your kids sell wrapping paper, coupons, or athletics-themed plastic cups, the fundraising order forms are sure to come. Rather than view this as a chore, take this opportunity to teach your kids about the art of selling.

The ability to sell is an important skill. One, perhaps, that we don’t focus on nearly as much as we should. After all, sales are the driving force behind business. They generate profits that can one day help your child earn a living. Your child may even discover that they have a natural talent for sales. Not to mention, schools often rely on fundraisers for extra money, so, in some ways, you’re also helping your child get a well-funded education.

SALES BASICS — LISTENListening is one of the most important aspects of selling. It also happens to be an important life skill, one that every adult should master. Inc., a magazine that focuses on growing companies, claims that sales should be 60 percent listening and 40 percent talking. It’s isn’t a 50-50 proposition. In sales, and often in life, you should be doing more listening than talking. Instill this in your kids, and they’ll be well on their way to winning that super-cool fundraising prize.

SALES TIP — WORK WITH YOUR KIDS According to Mark Hunter, the Sales Hunter, kids naturally embody many aspects of a great salesperson — just think of the last time your child wanted something. Hunter says kids are persistent, excellent at building a need for their product, and can often change a buyer’s mind when necessary — the buyer, in most cases, being a parent. Though your child may have a knack for listening, you can help them improve this skill by explicitly pointing out what they’re doing right, saleswise, when they ask for something, and where they can improve.

Being part of the medical community for more than two decades has allowed me to experience the satisfaction, privilege, and joy of positively transforming my patients’ lives. My dental career has provided plenty of challenges and rewards. I am grateful for the opportunity to help people and make my community a happier and healthier place.

After graduating from dental school and practicing in Boston for about four years, I decided to move back to Florida. For many years, I worked in Tampa Bay with a great group of people, developed a great relationship with my patients, and never pictured myself somewhere else.

I could not have made better choices …

FUNdraising:

I had met Dr. Monticciolo a while back. He is the kind of person you can’t help but get along with. Of all the things we talked about, I never thought or guessed we would be working together one day.

However, all this changed in 2014 when he opened his new office in New Port Richey. Dr. Monticciolo offered me the opportunity to be part of his team. We decided to join forces and provide our patients with a full range of expert dental care.

The happiest and most rewarding day of the year is when all of our exceptional staff and volunteers welcome and care for hundreds of patients during our annual Dentistry From The Heart event. It is an all-hands-on-deck day filled with smiles, love, and the spirit of giving back. All volunteers come together and work in unison offering their skills to anyone in need of dental treatment but cannot afford it.

I have made a lot of decisions in my life, and I am grateful they brought me to where I am today. It has been a pleasure to be a member of the Monticciolo Family and Sedation Dentistry team and serve this wonderful neighborhood and community. Our practice’s success is built on our core philosophy of providing world-class dental care and creating meaningful connections with our patients.
